    I really like the White Nights though I only have a few but they seem good quality for the money and there are some really nice colours. I do value a few opaque colours. I use them only sparingly, but they are useful, like your white gel pen, for adding final details like suggesting wild flowers in a meadow or blossom in a hedgerow. Straight from the tube, a few dots of Naples Yellow with a dash of colour bellow, is enough to convince you there are people in the distance... I don't do people well so the smaller and more abstract the better! I know for the purist they would plan ahead and mask or negative paint details but I don't think that far ahead.

      Peter Sobocki: I liked your comment, and your method of painting people in the distance. I am not skilled at painting people either, so I just leave them out! 😊 I will try this. Thank you for your helpful suggestion! 👍

    I have the tubes squeezed into a palette. They are pretty easy to re-wet and thanks to the honey content don't crack or dry out too much in my experience. But they don't seem too runny either. Mine have stayed a little tacky even when dry.

    You can easily open the tubes using the cap by turning it around. It's designed to poke a hole while not getting in the tube too deep.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  5 років тому +4

      Not with these tubes because there's nothing to poke with.

    • @Maria-hj8po

      I was not looking too carefully. They have actually two cap designs. Maybe the taller cap with holepoker is the old version. So you have to stick to the brush :).

    I bought a couple of pans and they are quite different from the paint I get from my Van Gogh tubes - they never dry! The only one by Van Gogh that behaves like that is Chinese White, which stays sticky after days, weeks on the palette. White Nights colors (at least the ones I've got) are vibrant and beautiful, and I'm looking forward to buying a few more. Thank you so much for sharing this color chart. It's really helpful for future acquisitions. 🙌🎨👏

      I use the sharp-pointed, silver, nut meat extractor that comes with a nutcracker. They are in the silverware bins in thrift stores across America. 😊 Also excellent for painting thin, wispy grasses, stirring paint when filling palette wells, and many other uses.

    Hi Teoh!
    White Nights is a brand of watercolors that is worth the money. I bought the 36-color pan. It is true that there are some shades that are opaque and some other color that is not resistant to light. Now I want to buy new colors and reviewing the color chart, the brand is reformulating its paints and eliminating pygmies that are not resistant to light. Take a look because I think it's worth it.
    For example:
    .Yellow Ocher, formerly composed of P.Y.43, P.Y.1. Pigment P.Y.1 appears to be fugitive and has now been replaced by P.Y.43, P.Y.54
    .Carmine with P.R.170: 1 and now they have changed it to P.R.19
    . Indigo with P.Bk7, P.B.15, P.V.3 and now it's P.Bk7, P.B.15, P.V.23
    . Raw Sienna with P.Br.7 and is now P.Br.43
    . Payne’s Gray with P.Bk.7, P.B.15, P.V.3 and now it's P.Bk.7, P.B.15, P.V.55
    I have detected those that were the ones that came in my palette, as there are many more colors, I suppose they have replaced some more.
    If the company bothers to improve its paintings, I think that is a good sign. Also, people are doing a lot of publicity for it and they are getting the hang of it. I'm glad!

      A set of paint pre-selected by any company may have non-lightfast (fugitive) or opaque colours. If you need your paint to behave a certain way, you have to select the colours yourself.
      White Nights quality is quite good. You just have to know the characteristics of the paint you work with.

    No cool yellow, and the cool red is not so lightfast. Substitute white with Aureolin (it is a light fast version) or lemon, and ditch the cool red for your favourite shade from their quin colours. An easy fix for this set. I would hesitate to buy their tubes as their pans are such good value. The colour chart is great Teo, I never have the patience to do more than swatch! I just did a new set of swatches so I wonder if the tube colours are a different formulation from their pans.... no blotchiness on the Aquafine paper ;-( , my first choice for WN is Khadi, they seem to go together really well.

    I own the 24 tube set. A very nice selection if colors. But both selections 12 and 24 miss the 2018 and 2019 new colors. I got the 24 set for 45 Euro (50$). A price no other brand offers. I have them dried in an bigger palette and they rewet easy. Regarding the cadmiums. I think you used to much paint. I frequently use cad yellow medium as a new gamboge substitution and i works fine. But the color is intense. To much paint will be opaque. Even more with all red colors of White nights. You only needs a tiny touch to get a bright wash.

    • @gorway7
      @gorway7 5 років тому +1

      I agree, I love Cadmiums, I think they are really versatile as they are so rich. You can get super transparent washes, to out of the tube - go over anything spot colour. I frequently glaze over greens with cad yellow to warm bits up.

    White Nights supposedly has honey in their watercolor pans, which could explain the stickiness!

    • @iskusstvo_lit_vodu
      @iskusstvo_lit_vodu 5 років тому +4

      No, the paints consist of pigments, gum-arabic and dextrin. Actually the company indicates bit abstract ingredients, like "pigments, gum-arabicum and other additives".

      @@iskusstvo_lit_vodu You are right, Jacksons do state it contains honey...? Interesting to know. I wonder how Jacksons came up with that? Dextrin is cheaper I suppose but will have similar effect... I think it's a sugary glucose like substance if I remember right, derived from starch, so it will act the same way as a water retaining humectant.

      @@iskusstvo_lit_vodu Its strange, I just looked on the Ken Bromley website and it makes the same reference to honey. I know in the UK, retailers generally use the same standard descriptions provided by the manufacturer or importer. I have just checked online and it would appear all UK sellers are using this same script, so if it is wrong, it may be a miss interpretation by the main importer.

    I think White Nights watercolours as very good paints.
    Unfortunately the lightfastness and the transparency are quite inconsistent throughout the whole range.
    I bought them individually (tubes/pans) and meticulously chose the most transparent and light fast colors both according to their color information and online research from other people who tested them.
    I am very pleased and satisfied now with my chosen pallet 😊

    thanks so much for this video Teoh! it was very informative :) i'd love to see a review on how the white nights tube paints behave when squeezed into palettes and left to dry like your other palettes. would they dry out? how badly cracked would they be? the 12-tube and 12-pan sets are the same price in my country so it would be great to know because if they don't crack, i think the tube set might be more worth it :)
    also, if i may ask for some advice... i've seen your "Watercolor Mixing with Color Temperature in Mind" video but still have difficulties with mixing secondary colors. i understand the theory but in practice, i just get confused, struggle, and get frustrated. most palettes/tubes come arranged from white to yellow to red, blue, green, earth tones, black. is there a way to re-arrange the warm and cool primary colors in a way that i can easily know which ones to mix with each other to get vibrant colors?

Just reverse the lid.. that's what the upward pointing point is for on the top of the lid! Pierce by pushing down then twist once or twice then remove, foil will be smoothed inwards against the neck to stop clogs behind foil tabs that would be otherwise created by pushing foil just in.. The more transparent colours look great for rock and mountain textures, while a more subdued look in the green makes it great for small detailed insects. My problem with this set are the cadmium colours and the lightfast quality. Otherwise it would be fine to get this if you have some experience with more opaque colours, or if you are switching from gouache to watercolour like i did.
