- Ladakh Protest: Despite the freezing temperatures, thousands marched in Ladakh, observing a shutdown to demand statehood and Constitutional protection under the 6th Schedule. The Ladakh Union Territory witnessed a strong expression of demands, with people gathering in Kargil and Leh. The protest comes in the midst of ongoing discussions, as the Centre announced a second round of talks through a high-powered committee set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs. How would sixth schedule help in conserving the environment?
As far as I know, it only prevents land owning by 'outsiders' and doesn't contain anything specific about env.
Also wouldn't it better for the the public to request a central act to add additonal conservation of Himalayan states? Maybe another notification for Ladakh.
Taking direct control away from the Union of a sensitive border area due to bureaucratic govt posts seems extreme. It would do well for the citizens to find why delays occur in hiring and how to expedite it.
Also hoping the centre is aware of the simmering discontent, and seeks to placate the grievers.
Bcuz 6th schedule is the easiest way to get statehood.
