    As a Brighton local I can say that I hope the new timetable still allows for 3 minute connections as this shuttle does - it's main purpose is for those of us who travel to/from Clapham Junction, which is no longer served directly from Brighton except Sundays and super early/late trains, hence you need to change at Haywards Heath (where there's usually a 4-min connection with a service from Eastbourne/Ore, or Hove, where there's this shuttle. Although I'm hoping the Hove shuttle is being axed because we're finally getting direct trains to Clapham Junction back!

      @@PGATProductions As in with the new timetable? Shame :( To be fair, it's not a huge inconvenience as the bulk of the timetable allows for quick connections, and where it doesn't is when the earlies and lates run that do serve CLJ.

      The lack of platform space at Clapham Junction for services that now stop there has meant that services that have alternate connections now run through, one can change at Haywards Heath, Three Bridges or East Croydon for services that do stop there. They may be slower services, as most people using fast services into London are going to Victoria. Crowded peak time trains that did stop became even more crowded on both up and down services.

    It used to be 3 car when they had 313s, but when those went, the only eletric stock remaining, was 4 car 377s.
    Now, they could run 2 car DMUs, but I shouldn't have to explain how that would be even stupider.
    The rolling stock choice also probably explains the decrease in service, as they need more 377s on their busier routes, to form 8 car trains, so this service likely got scaled back to enable that.

      They never considered the slam door CIGs that remained in service on the Brockenhurst to Lymington Branch!!

      @@ianmcclavinmy understanding was that the slam door stock on the Brockenhurst to Lymington branch required special dispensation while it remained in operation- and has been phased out since 2010... even if similar rolling stock were still readily available, I see no indication that any similar dispensation to operate slam door stock would be granted

      I do recall the Hove shuttle being a 377 even before the 313s were finally withdrawn from the Seaford line, which I remember finding rather odd. That said, don’t quote me on that since my memory could be imperfect, of course. ~ Daniel

    This shuttle service has been great to avoid the crowds at Brighton heading back to London, by catching the less busy services at Hove. I was hoping they’d at least keep the Saturday service

    In terms of the 4 coach thing… since the retirement of the 313s, it only leaves a handful of 377/3s which are 3 car (I think it’s 28 units but don’t quote me on that) where as there are a significant number of 4 car trains available to Southern - so I guess it’s just making use of what’s available. They have to be much more dynamic now as they scrapped the 455s and 313s essentially with no replacements - so the redundancy they had before with units just isn’t there these days

    I wonder what happened to the Southern services between Brighton to London Victoria, instead there’s Thameslink. That is why the shuttle to Hove is there for people to get a train service that comes to and from Littlehampton. It’s the new way they want to go to like Clapham Junction or London Victoria instead of changing at Gatwick Airport or East Croydon on Thameslink trains.

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 6 місяців тому +1

      All Gatwick Express services now run from Brighton to Victoria on Mondays to Saturdays, calling at Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport only. A change of train is still required for Clapham Junction.

    • @Gregdotgreg
      @Gregdotgreg 6 місяців тому +1

      They were removed due to the rebuilding of Gatwick Station. The Littlehampton and Eastbourne trains stopped splitting at Haywards Heath and the Eastbourne trains used the pathways of what were the Southern Brighton trains.
      The timetable simply hasn't been put back the way it was now the rebuilding at Gatwick has finished.
      The reason the Hove shuttles exist in the first place was to provide six trains an hour from Brighton going west, to connect with the Littlehampton trains that come down from Victoria

    Southern who are still using the Ex-Gatwick Express Class 387/2s should give it back to Gatwick Express. Or are they still using them on Brighton-Eastbourne, Lewis, Hastings and Seaford services.
    Maybe Southern should use them on Brighton-Portsmouth & Southsea, Portsmouth Harbour, Southampton Central, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Hove services.

    Fascinating video, many thanks. I never knew about this unusual shuttle service before.
    Unless I missed it, exactly why does this shuttle service exist. Is it to connect with a service coming from London to say Littlehampton or somewhere else on the West Coastway line but avoiding Brighton by taking the Cliftonville Curve at Preston Park, the next station north of Brighton, and then calling at Hove. Or vice versa, to connect with trains from Hove to London that take the same direct curve and avoid Brighton.
    It's certainly not a Parliamentary Train as the short link between Brighton and Hove is intensively used and is under no possible risk of closure, as this would sever the West Coastway line from Brighton, which would be absurd. Beeching would have closed the West and East Coastway lines from Brighton but nowadays, with many people working in Brighton priced out of the city because of a drastic shortage of accommodation, and moving out to Shoreham and Worthing, it's busier than ever, and demand seems ti be rising especially with the enormous amount of multi-storey housing being built in Shoreham.

      As far as I understand, it’s meant to give interchange with the Southern services to London Victoria from Hove, as I don’t think Southern go directly from Brighton to Victoria anymore (Gatwick Express still do provide this service though). ~ Daniel

    You should have filmed the remains of the Holland Road station which you passed through on your journey.

    • @adrianbaron4994
      @adrianbaron4994 6 місяців тому

      The LBSCR built Holland Road as a halt, a sort of simplified station, as they had some hopes for a kind of steam metro service along the route between Brighton and Worthing using railmotors, a combined small steam locomotive and carriage in one body. This was supposed to compete with trams, which ironically never ran in Hove, and worked at first but the halt was never really that profitable. Even though the route as far as West Worthing was electrified in 1933 as part of the huge project to electrify the Brighton mainline from the end of the third rail routes at Coulsdon south to Brighton, Holland Road began to be skipped by some services and was eventually closed by BR in 1956. As it was mostly built of wood, there isn't too much left to see.
      Could it come back, as an unmanned station, given the increasing road congestion in Brighton and the growth of traffic on this route? It's a nice idea but the station was in a cutting, reached by long-gone steps down from Holland Road bridge, and it would be hard and probably very expensive to rebuild to modern accessibility standards.
