Barry Gibb "guests" on Today, 1988

- Barry Gibb was a special guest on Australian Ch 9's breakfast program, "Today", during their 1988 Wimbledon coverage (live from England).
The presenter got the timing wrong when she mentioned Andy's death being "last year"; I remember watching this show and my heart sinking for Barry at the insensitive question, with the show being only a few months after (March to June).
Barry shares memories with co-host George Negus about days growing up on the Redcliffe Peninsula of Queensland. He was such a good sport, sitting on the sidelines as they held other interviews. I hope they rewarded him with extra large strawberries and cream!
Two small snippets of music clips played, so I'd better cover the copyright! I own nothing.

I am sure Berry does not read these comments, but I wish he did. He would realize just how very very much he is still loved and respected. We, your fans, still love you as we still love and miss Mo and Robin. 💔💔❤️
I'm pretty sure he knows! Bee Gees fans are all over the place, and he's probably made aware of it on a nearly daily basis, even during COVID. We'll always care about him, and his brothers, through all the ups and downs. :)
🐝🐝🐝🐝Gees best of the best 💋
Super talented.... handsome & very humble! His children are truly fortunate to have Barry as their father. The world is also fortunate to have the Gibb bro's music!
What a wonderful human being. He isn't fazed by his fame. He has it all rolled into one.
I’ve lost a son, I know grief. Apparently this lady does not or whomever directed her to say that? Anyway, Barry is a very strong, brave, and classy gentleman. Love Barry Gibb. RIP Andy, Mo, and Robin. Sending my love always.
They don't come any more handsome, talented, humble, good-natured, and fun than Barry Gibb! He takes my breath away!
Me too. Still so sexy at 73.
YES!!!! HE IS
I feel the same.
@@JDog-tn8we when music was music when singers they were singers.... back in the 80s live with more life
2021... life is Harsh
Omg! I have rediscovered the Beegees with their documentary, and have been watching and listening to all they've done! Always loved Barry...and I so agree with your assessments of him. Hot and humble!💖
Urgh how rude of her, he handled that very well.
I’ve always loved Barry. He’s so genuine and funny. Warm and caring. Gorgeous.
Agreed. A thorough gentleman.
Hoping Barry reads our comments do he would realize how much they're loved
Seeing Barry clearly distraught over the mention of Andy made my heart ache for him. God, what a horrible moment to be confronted with such a callous question on live TV. He really is amazing with PR though - knows just how to move things along subtly and without causing a stir, though he certainly would have had every right to.
Reporter sem noção...ou será que ela se acha😮???
I cant believe that was the first question she asked. Callous indeed.
I was so glad that Barry told her that he wasn't going to talk about Andy. I was also glad that she respected his wish and didn't bring Andy up again.
Barry, a man of class, style, elegance, graciousness...and many many talents. (not to mention...very easy on the eyes)
Wonderful group!
Amen to that!
I have always loved Barry. Even if they make mistakes,he does not make them feel bad .He is such a charmer-well spoken too!❤😊
I have so much respect for Barry. He is such a patient, honest, down to earth person. Handsome, smart and oh so talented!!!!!
i love him he is a great singer and guy
More than that. On the female side. He’s very good looking ❤️
@@lindapuri2589 Absolutely !! I just love watching him sing, with his facial expressions. Oh my gosh !! I rarely see this in other music entertainers. I wonder if he realizes how he effects people.
Fantastic song writer. I mean absolutely FANTASTIC!
Mr Gibb ,
May god blessed you and your family always .
He’s such a lovely gentle man and so damn handsome. I’ve loved him such a long time. I grew up with listening to the bee gees. He’s also got a superb memory. Lol.
What a class act this man is!!! I just love him, always have and always will!!!
I was a great fan of the Bee Gees. And now on 21 september 2020 we know that Barry is the only BeeGee that's alive. Great respect for Barry!!
Bee gees aren't just amazing singers and song writers, each one is an amazing person! Long live the Gibbs
The interviewer was so cruel to play that clip of Andy & go straight there to Barry.
Unbelievably insensitive & he was such a kind gent about it.
So classy about redirecting her. I'm sure she put a lump in his throat. He seems very low key. Such deep grief. Bless his heart.
He's a thorough gentleman.
Especially since it's the first thing she brought up.
Nothing but respect for this man💗
I Love The Bee Gees ❤️❤️🙏
We agree on every aspect. She'd done all that reading? How could anyone get something so critical as the interviewee's brother's year of death wrong? Barry handled it beautifully, and recovered from something very difficult to go on with the interview like the true professional he is.
Obviously not a reporter just a pundit regurgitating what someone wrote for her to read.
She was actually one of the more well know reporters and more popular personalities at the time. She was a reporter on the Australian edition of 60 minutes . She is usually very accurate. We all make mistakes. You obviously didn't do your research on her , Liz Hayes , otherwise you wouldn't have made such a harsh and judgemental statement. As I say we all make mistakes
@@TheSkirvo I knew who she was /is, and still find that error unforgivable, after "all the reading" she'd done to prepare. Then to keep pushing her point as if Barry hadn't just said that it wasn't that long ago. Talk about 'not reading the room.'
Barry looks so handsome so sweet so friendly and so cute ,my forever icon
Barry handled this good. Intelligent man
He definitely did. The Gibb brothers were always well spoken.
One of the most beautiful men ever. He'll always be a babe.
Megan Donaldson, I totally agree with you! I've loved him since I was 16 and he was 23 (1969). He still makes my heart beat faster!
You are so right. Nowadays he is still such an attractive and nice man.
Totally agree. Dionne Warwick said Barry Gibb was the handsomest man she'd ever seen. I was always amazed he never did movies.
Barry actually handled that blunder very well.
They are all amazing guys very handsome and talented and love their music rest in peace Andy Maurice Robin greatly missed
Love Barry, what a gorgeous and lovely man. Also deeply tickled by the tennis update at the end, I laughed out loud!
Me too. Such a wry sense of humour 💙
Barry looks great here, very handsome
I think Barry and Andy favor so much you can just see it in their eyes and in their speech meaning she's amazing so thankful that his mother and father well their mother and father got together and had all these beautiful children and now they're having children and grandchildren I just wish that wish for Barry so much so much happiness with his wife Linda they love each other you can tell do his son's looks so much like him and they play instruments they can read music and Andy before he passed he was flying planes so those wonderful things there that you uncover with the group and brothers I just love them all and I just miss Andy Maurice and Robin so much I know very does to and his entire family misses them Plus his father and mother they all miss them two loving parents they had giving them support when they needed it
be still my heart!! should be a sin to look sooooooo handsome!!
He is very handsome .All the Gibbs were easy on the eyes as they say .it must be hard dor them to talk about Andy
Great clip of Andy singing. Love how nice Barry was when he told her he was uncomfortable talking about Andy so soon (1 year) after his death. Wonderful interview by Barry
Yes, Barry is always tactfully forthcoming. I also love the way he explains that anyone who aspires to fame must expect intrusion of privacy at various levels. Every celebrity should take a cue from this gracious man!!
5455mickey! Andy was his brother, while younger one is always loving & center of entire family i.e why Barry is sad even after 1 year. I was too sad almost 8000km away and 30 years back
Surely this interview is from 1989 as Andy died in 1988?
This interview was just about andy gibbs death and the children as it stands now barry gibb is the only living brother because maurice and robin died years later
Marwood that’s exactly what I was wondering.
Every time I have seen Barry Gibb in an interview he always comes across as a real person, not some pretentious entertainment industry bore.
Andy Gibb was and is the best looking guy I've ever seen. Ever. He had a way about him that makes you feel he would be a good friend.
How AMAZING is this man-Lets not forget that he is above and beyond all-A person-PLEASE take the time to LISTEN & to HEAR!!!
i can't believe she said lets start with andy--what a dagger
Yes, only a few months after his passing. Heartless.
I agree, that was pretty horrible. Like, I know reporters are known for being ruthless, but did she actually expect him to reply to that. I know Barry is far too gracious and good at PR to put her in her place, but I wouldn't have blamed him if he had.
barry gibb such great member of bee gees !!!!!!!
Barry handled the interview very well, might make a good politician but then again probably to honest to do that
I love Barry of the BeeGees forever. Barry is always been so handsome. God bless Andy. R
God bless my #barrygibb love my beegees always!
No worries :) Looking back on this now though this looks to me like such an unprofessional interview. Despite Liz Hayes having done some much reading she seems very ill prepared, her blunder regarding the timing of Andy's death is unforgivable. Barry is all class though :)
Nice surprise- I’d never seen this interview. Thank you for posting it. I miss them so.
Stefan edberg, Pat Cash, and Roger Federer. That’s a dream tennis lineup.
I watch this show everyday -surprised I missed it.
Goodness sakes, the indignities Barry has to endure, oafish interviewers! One would think they'd be thrilled (and well-versed) in a guest of Barry's stature. Alas, the only one well-versed is Barry. (that is a terrible pun, sorry;-( Thank you for posting this video. It is always good to see our older, classier brother Barry.
Love barry very nice man
I have always loved been a fan of Andy and the Bee Gees.
Barry and his brother's as kids used to mime to a record but one day they record broke so Barry sang n realised Barry could sing the rest is history as they say ...... 😄👍
Barry Gibb--coolest uncle ever?
George Master Barry Gibb is your uncle? That would be pretty cool 😊
Não haverá banda melhor que os Bee Gees ❤❤❤
What a stupid interviewer...
Barry responded very kind and politely. What a great man he is.
He always does, so did his brothers, what kind, polite, well mannered and utterly charming men! Love how they handled, Barry still handles, any interview situation!
Yes, she really was quite a silly cow. Barry - always the gentleman!
She was very insensitive and he handled it politely as all the brothers did.
@@sandradyer5956 and you’re a better cow?
What a nice man
Barry sempre tão elegante!!! ❤
Love the BeeGees ❤️❤️❤️❤️ esp Barry 👍❤️
This interview took place on June 19th, 1988. A little over three months after Andy's death. Boris Becker won the next day the quarterfinal discussed at the end of the interview.
One of them conducted themselves very professionally...
I think Barry couldn’t wait to leave this show.she was so rude.so insensitive.she had no heart but a swinging brick.hes grieving poor man .your an Angel Barry. Uk 🇬🇧 xx
Andy was beautiful it is so sad xxx
Il buon Dio ha dato tutto a Barry, talento, bellezza, eleganza
Barry is such a gent. Now l have to say Robin is My one and only true love. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Love Robin to the moon and back.❤❤❤❤
So cruel to bring up Andy🤬. Barry such a lovely man. He and his three brothers are forever remembered with love from my ❤.
They also captioned Andy's song incorrectly, it was Shadow Dancing not I Just Want to be Your Everything. Thanks for uploading hadn't seen this before :)
No kidding. How rude of her to want to "talk about. It". Instead of offering her condolences and moving on about other things. Barry, being the gentleman that he is, politely asks if we could not talk about Andy as it is too painful and it had just happened. Reporters. I truly wonder if they are really human.
hrsnrnd10 what if I tell you umm their bodies are but they got visitors most of time and they are not.
Explain to me what you just said.
Not all reporters are rotten, tactless people. I was a reporter for almost 25 years. I refused to let it make me that sort of person. At one newspaper, I was told to go out and interview a grieving family and ask them "how they felt" about their child being tragically killed. I refused to do it, even though the boss threatened to fire me. He finally assigned it to someone else and stuck me writing "fluff" stories. I left there as soon as I found another job, but I never compromised .
@@hrsnrnd10 I think what @caremell
is saying, is that all reporters are possessed aliens.
для некоторых журналистов нет ничего святого
Andy's passing was all over the Aussie media at the time, and bearing in mind these interviewers were high profile Australian TV identities, I think it was pretty poor form to make such a glaring mistake. The Bee Gees, supposedly Australia's favourite sons, and the interviewer has to do all this reading "last night"? Hmm, mustn't have been a fan ;-) How embarrassing. Good thing Barry could handle these situations with class and dignity.
So much of a nice singer and song writer .
Handsome posh 🐝🐝🐝Gee boy💋💋💋
I’m glad he set a limit. There’s no reason to be eviscerated for public consumption.
It’s disgusting that people just kept pulling off the scabs of their healing from their loss.
He said he didn’t want to discuss Andy, and she pushed again anyway.
I find it hard to understand why on earth she brought it up at all. Especially when it was so recent. He and Andy were close and even after he said please don't, she continued on.
Beautifully put. Thank you for commenting.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
fascinating...such a decent guy...not many would wear a tie these days on breakfast tv. it looks like ch9 are using GMTV's studios btw (UK ITV's breakfast tv show)
This interview was in 1988, but yes, always well dressed. He also wore a suit and tie to this year's Wimbledon.
I always groove on how the 3 of them dressed. They could wear things totally different but somehow intuitively it worked together. Always loved Barry wearing suit jacket with jeans and sometimes white sneaks. Beautiful classy men with an uncanny knack of keeping their own persona and blending together. Love love love and grief grief grief unending both. @@BarkinBelieveIt
I can see Dairy and his brothers all three of them he's much happier around his brothers and his family can tell it just makes a difference in his life
This made me LOL! You made my day, thank you! (still laughing)
Well stated!
Is it just me or does Barry's voice sound extremely close to Andy's here.
Luke Graham I agree. Andy not only sounded like Barry he looked a whole lot like him also.
Ms Annabell They were very much alike.
Absolutely...even some of his mannerisms. He has said they've always called him and Andy the twins....more alike than Maurice and Robin are/were.
Both had the same birth mark. Both loved sports, especially tennis, which they both played. Both left-handed but played guitar right-handed. They sang alike and talked alike. Both so gorgeous ❤❤❤
This lady interviewer was so tactful. When Barry said speaking about Andy was too painful she was so smooth and classy in her pivot and never brought up Andy again. But she did get a very good interview in my opinion.
Of all the brother’s deaths, the one I remember the most is Maurice. It was so sudden and shocking. They were still playing to large crowds whenever they wanted to perform and they were all healthy except for Barry’s arthritis issues. And that is not a life threatening condition.
Thank you for noticing the station's incorrect caption. I'm embarrassed for not picking that up myself! Have corrected in the copyright section. Cheers :-)
Andy died in 1988...not the year before as this female host had stated. Andy had just turned 30...had just gotten a new contract thanks to Barry...and was about to officially become the 4th Bee Gee....the announcement was to take place only a short time away from his death.
Yes, they had no idea. Such a shame none of these plans came to fruition. A genuine loss 💔
I thought that too. They always sounded alike but more so here I think even expressions seem a little more like Andy.
Eres único mi amor. 💖💖💖💖
I like this interview :) ! They all seem relaxed in a nice way! Maybe they had already decided together with Barry to mention Andy the way they did ...! I think it worked out fine!
It's 2022 and this is the first time I'm watching this video.
The interview was very unprofessional and awkward and it looked like he felt very uncomfortable being there. I was blown away by his response, short and to the point but very professional. He commanded respect and just didn't seem like he really got it from her. All she kept saying was how much she read up on him the night before. Like cramming the night before an exam. Wow.
Yeah, considering how well know the Bee Gees are and were, it's surprising they couldn't have had someone more suitable interview him then a woman who clearly knows nothing about them.
Barry was such a kind gentleman to this rude woman
Horrible interviewers! Ugh. Obviously neither of them knew JACK SQUAT about him. He handled the idiocy very well, even though he was insulted.
she's one of the worst host interview I've ever seen.
George Negus isn't bad, and Barry seems to vibe with him just fine, but the woman was awful. For someone who 'studied up on him all night' she got SO much wrong, and was just generally insulting.
After watching this old interview, i don't think Barry felt insulted but more uncomfortable and emotional to talk about the lose of his brother as he had passed away recently before this interview and not being ready to talk about Andi
@@russtorque2993 he handled it firmly having had a lot of experience with media. And it is insulting knowing these people have one agenda. To get everything out of you regardless of your feelings. Barry controls himself politely and its part of the job to do interviews. His eyes grow cold and there is a lack of respect in them as well as an awareness of what they're after if you watch him throughout the interview.
If he had been really insulted, he would have walked out - as he did on the Clive Anderson interview.
thanks ;)
Her questions are embarrassingly and irritatingly negative. He must have been happy to walk away at last.
It was sad they got kind of a bad rap because of their disco music, especially when it was some of their best music.
JESTEM DUMNA Z CIEBIE KOCHANY BARRY ❤ZA PIĘKNY CHARAKTER I DUSZĘ WRAŻLIWĄ SZANUJĘ 😊DZIĘKUJĘ ZA OBECNOŚĆ - STANOŁEŚ KOCHANY BARRY NA WYSOKOŚCI ZADANIA ❤
I would have loved to see you and Andy in a tennis match. Both are so good looking would be watching close . I lost my baby brother that I practically raised. Nice looking. He had turned 48. He had moved to texas on the gulf. Passed for over a month before I was notified. So I truly no the heart reak. But the BeeGees forever love greatgrandma. Marilyn
Barry always said that the songs were just r & b, And if you listen well you realize they are just that.
Nice guy.

Liz Hayes-Omg what a blunt comment about dear Andy with no perception of his grief.. Poor Barry
Go all snl Barry on that reporter over the Andy thing
Apparently Barry could sing just like Andy and did so on after dark as Andy couldn't
Lindoooos
This interview was probably 1989 as they refer to Andy having passed away the year before, and he died in March 1988.
No, it was 1988, just a few months after Andy passed. Firstly, it was on a video tape marked 1988, and second, Barry talks about Pat Cash in the Wimbledon finals. Cash played in 88, not 89.
Andy sang like Barry.
That looks like old TVAM studios at Camden Town London
