I know this is an older comment but they do serious research on topics. The chess episode is extremely good with every game played being an actual historical game. Every board position they show is a realistic position or more likely a position from a famous game in the past.

In all fairness to The Mentalist, I believe he was memorizing all the cards and not counting them because he is that kind of character, but i think he was there for a purpose to expose that dealer, not to play basic strategy.

For context, his statement was about hard 17s, which was the case in the depicted clip. Basic strategy, however, does insist that players hit on soft 17s against a shown 2.

Somehow it's not surprising that The Simpsons provide a more realistic portrayal than Hollywood ever has.
Colin, I want to take a moment to thank you. To thank you for teaching me almost everything I know now. I've seen virtually all your public (non-membership) videos, and with their help, I have been doing quite well at my local casinos. I've even been backed off one of them (albeit a "soft backoff" -- they half-shoed me last time I was there.) But not before getting in a series of long sessions at least once a week almost every week for pretty close to a full year.
I started with a bankroll of 5K, and have grinded it up to a little over 10K over about 200 hours of play. While that's not a significant amount for that time period, it is - in fact - quite a bit above my current EV, and honestly feels kind of amazing considering that I'm:
    1) doing it as a side hustle from my full time day job, and infrequently get in more than one session per week.
    2) hard-pressed to find casinos in my state that DON'T charge antes.
    3) Fighting against post -Covid conditions that have seriously limited table availability at those few casinos who don't.
Besides all that, though, I just want to keep my ROR really low ( I think alot of AP's willingly take on a higher risk when first starting out, until they build their BR up, and then lower it later on.) But I don't expect I'll ever be able to save up another if I lose THIS one. This is pretty much my one and only shot at this.
Often I go back and re-watch videos of yours; not because I'm necessarily learning anything new from repeat viewings, but because you have a way of keeping me psychologically grounded in this whole endeavor, and that is more important to me than you might can imagine. There's a member of one of my card-counting social media groups who has referred to you as the "Mr. Miyogi" of blackjack. That may sound odd to you, but I think I know what he means. Your method of teaching is a useful guide in simply keeping one's mind in the proper zone at all times.
Anyhow, once again-- thank you for your spiritual guidance. You're a fantastic teacher. You really are! And your book is a great read as well.

Had a friend who thinks she’s a card counter… (we fell out over other things, but I remember her claiming a 190IQ based off a Facebook quiz, so… yeah, very good at fooling herself. I got 200 on the same quiz, and I *know* I’m not that smart lmao)
Anyway. I have another acquaintance who works at the local casino as a dealer. These two women don’t really know each other, but I mentioned the “card counter” in passing (before learning this other woman’s profession), and got an immediate physical description + description of her service dog.
I was like “uhhh… Yeah? You know her?”
“Yeah. She counts, but she’s no good at it. The casino is quite happy for her to have her +$5k days, and for her to conveniently forget her -$15k days.”
Bad card counters are *great* for casinos.

That casino featured in the Simpsons is loosely based off of a real Caesars owned casino, that no longer offers table games. In the 2000's that had table games, and KC of Inside The Edge told Gambling With An Edge that they illegally backroomed him against their will, and KC chose not to sue because he couldn't get the whole thing recorded.

I’ve only seen this once, but a casino I used to count at in the Midwest had an interesting strategy for counters.
Very small place that was tribal run and didn’t have many high rollers. Max BJ game was $50 to $1K spread. If you played high (for them) it was very rare they’d back you off.
Noticed this then asked a dealer friend who confirmed what their CM at the time would do is if they suspected counting, they’d tap in off cycle an anti counting dealer.
When I asked what that was, was told it would be their fastest dealer who would be told to deal at warp speed and strike up as much conversation as you can with the players and counter using numbers as much as possible in convo.
The goal was to make the counter lose the count or make them so annoyed they’d go somewhere else or to a smaller stakes table. I was told that CM saw counters as a byproduct of spreading the game so if they stuck to a low stakes table, the casino was sufficiently protected against risk or if they stayed in high stakes and were sufficiently distracted to make an error.
If that didn’t work, then floor would step in and flat bet the player if they wanted to continue to play high. Complete banning from BJ was only reserved for the people who did really dumb stuff like threatened dealers, actually cheated, etc.
This casino has since moved to a different CM and rules that mirror Vegas, etc but it was interesting to see a new dealer tap into my table and all of a sudden start rapid fire talking to me using numbers a lot in sentences 😂

The last casino is what got me into card counting although a lot of fiction, I believe their back room scenes was much more realistic than 21 back room scenes of getting physical touched, at least for modern day. Although not completely realistic, it provides you a realistic view of how bad a team can go with one person leading and not being transparent. Most of the films can’t realistically depict card counting as it will take away this illusion from it that entertains so many people of being a math genius. But I can say the last casino was very influential in me learning how to look into actual card counting, which is why I’m still grateful to the film, even though it wasn’t completely real.

Thanks for the videos. So helpful! I have a question. How does one find their ev for specific game rules. Given the rules, how does one determine the point in which you see positive e.v? What can you expect to obtain for ev with true counts of 1,2,3, etc? My local game is 6 decks h17, penetration of 4.5 decks, double any first 2 cards, double after split, split up to 4 times, cannot resplit aces (get 1 card) and No surrender. First off how do I find the negative e.v. which would be given if one played strictly basic strategy? And then how do I determine e.v. given counting, and at which point of the count the game becomes breakeven or shows positive ev. Would I only be able to make money if I strictly wonged in? How do I determine if I am able to make money if I can't Wong in and have to play table minimum until count is good? If anyone could help answer this question for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Even though my bet spread isn't huge, I think the amount of chips you stack there can garner attention. If I use two $5 chips and then all of a sudden stack 12 $5 chips, that stands out hugely. I have my $25 chips with some $5 chips on top to disguise the amount. These are ready to go for bet increases when the time is appropriate. The dealer would see the difference, but the eye in the sky would have to be paying good attention to see it enough to get attention from it..

From my experience, I just play like the back off is inevitable. There’s no way to know if the casino even is on your tail so trying to act a certain way to throw them off when they probably aren’t even suspecting you is likely a waste of time/resources. If you wanna try to throw them off by doing something that doesn’t cost a lot of money/resources then I’d say go ahead, but I wouldn’t put too much effort into it.
I once thought the same and tried to play slots at 2 casinos I go a lot just for the hopes the camera will see me and they’ll think “he’s just a gambler and getting lucky, not a counter” but I was eventually backed off both casinos and I lost some money to slots so it was a lose-lose

Hey can you explain to me how bad players don't effect the game? If the count is high then the odds say the next card will be a bust card so if someone hits (let's say a 16) then they will likely take a 10 meaning there are less 10s left for the dealer. If you are playing with 4 others that means they can bring down the count by a running 4? Doesn't that mean you can lose your edge from bad players?

    • @michaelbraun6504
      @michaelbraun6504 2 роки тому +1

Other players skill level has no bearing whatsoever on your edge.
Too MANY players, however (in other words a full/crowded table) DOES hurt your edge. Because you get fewer rounds per hour played, and by the time everyone's cards are dealt to them and it's finally your turn to act, your bet might no longer be accurate (in terms of the count.)

    • @nehemyahberdugo2305
      @nehemyahberdugo2305 2 роки тому

@@michaelbraun6504 wouldn't that mean though that there skill does matter since even if your playing with one other he may hit when the count is high and therefore bring down the count or as a gambler would say " take the dealers 10"

@@nehemyahberdugo2305 No. Gamblers thinking like that is precisely why they are called gamblers.
That person who plays wrong and hits could just as easily draw a deuce and INCREASE the count.
Besides, most playing decision ( and basically ALL betting decisions) are based on the True Count, (AKA "per-deck count,) not the running count. One high card being drawn out before your action won't change much anything.
The way other people play has no effect on your long-term results. I can tell you from both common sense math, and from personal experience playing and winning. I have played with numerous bad players

It always astounds that casinos would be concerned about card counters. There are significantly more gamblers that don't have a clue, quite willing to hand over hundreds of dollars every time they play to the casino.

Colin, I just emailed you about a casino in Arizona holding my chips because I didn't want to show my ID when cashing out. They sent me home with a receipt and said to come back with my ID and they will give me my money. I told them it was illegal to hold my chips, but they didn't care. Please respond I want to know what steps I need to take. Thank you!

It's interesting how different groups view card counting. In my mind it is cheating. Importantly it's not illegal, that bit is very clear and well established. But 99% of the cheating in the world is not illegal. If you cheat on a Minecraft server the cops don't care, they're not gonna come, but you can be banned. Exact same thing with card counting. The rules are there, it's against the rules, it doesn't matter if the rules are fair or not. (They're quite biased in favor of the casino, who wrote them) It's against the rules. If it's against the rules, it's cheating.
Illegal and Cheating are not the same words, it's very easy for something to be illegal and not cheating or cheating and not illegal. Let's say you stole a car. Obviously illegal, but no one would ever say you cheated to get the car, you stole it.
This isn't an insult about skill, cheating can be very hard and I don't think I could ever do it successfully. You earn your money doing it.

There are circumstances where casino security can detain someone even if they are walking away.
If the person has been barred from the casino and returns (usually the deadline is within a year) they can detain for trespaasing, regardless of the persons willingness to leave at that moment.
