    favorite video ever! Fascinating! Was searching for weatherstripping for 2 one piece tilt doors in Michigan; everyone says to replace them, that they are too dangerous. Double springs would definitely be safer. Can't afford 2 completely new doors installed. Will look into the hardware you used and company names mentioned. Thank you!

    Yep your right, there are 3 holes in the main plate for various clearances the lower you go the worse it operates. I put one in with an inch and a half of clearance and the door literally comes straight back and then rises and bounces real hard, takes a rugged machine to pull that off. I have done this to insulated doors but only the doors with the pop in insulation...not the metal backed or foam injected doors. Next week I should have another video on a 1pc wood door build.

    Normally the steel backed doors don't have stiles, just some small re-enforcing plates where the hinges go, plus they would be very heavy as well. Although for the guy that wanted one bad enough I'm quite sure it could be done, you might need HCJ-7 hdwr and some 528 or maybe even 328 springs. The aluminum braces in the back are indeed a 1pc door conversion kit sold by "Multi-Sales". And Matt, when it comes to 1pc doors...or even worse 1pc doors in low head position slower definitely is better.

    @ALLProGarageDoors  10 років тому +1

    Multisales is huge, even when we used to do a lot of genie's back in the 80's...genie recommended we buy from multisales instead of direct from genie because they were cheaper. 1pc steel doors are about the same as always we do about 10 a yr. !st United sandwich doors used to have full stiles but they went with the plates, I'm sure someone still uses stiles but not any of the brands I'm familiar with.

    I remember Multi-Sales. My friend in Pasadena gets some of his stuff there too. So with them having a kit, is it safe to assume that these sectional conversions are becoming more common?
    I didn't realise that about the sandwich doors. Does anyone make that type of door with full internal styles?
    That Pro98 with the double carriage was in a condo building, and the garage next door had a MOM SafeGuard. That one never failed or ate its carriage, and moved MUCH slower. One reason I like the oldies.

    I am looking to do this exact project to my garage door and was curious what you used for the end caps as well as your cross bracing. Could you possibly add your materials list into the description? Great video by the way, great step by step as you installed and adjusted the springs on either side. Keep up the great content!

    • @ALLProGarageDoors
      @ALLProGarageDoors  5 років тому +2

      Unfortunately I didn’t think of a materials list in the description and the video is quite old but we got the endcaps and bracing from a local door parts distributor called Multi-Sales. But any metal store would have 2” u-channel I’d imagine... you just might have to paint it.

  • @TheGarageDoorGeek
    @TheGarageDoorGeek 10 років тому +1

    I'm curious, why not use a steel back with injected polyurethane foam insulation? Wouldn't that make the door stronger? (Assuming the door has internal stiles.) Or are they just too heavy for this type of conversion?
    Also, the framework you used in the conversion, is this a kit than you ordered, or is this something y'all fabbed in the shop?
    On the low clearance settings, I think you'd have to have a slow operator too, or it'd tear the crap outta the door and hardware. Slower than Marantec.

    Mike, thanks for the information. In my area of Va, most of the door contractors have little to no experience with single panel doors. I have just signed the contract for a house with a one piece garage door with significant rust on the contact edge to the ground and needing repairs. The door appears to be made of panels from a multi-section door attached to a frame and I was hoping to be able to replace just the bottom panel. This video shows that it can be done and the door can be completely replaced if needed.
    One additional question; can you recommend a reference source for matching the door springs in an application and what information is needed? My spring set is in reasonable condition for the door as set, however I am considering insulating the door.

    Nice! It's been too long since I've gotten to fool with Cali-1-piece hardware. There's one other adjustment on that hardware, that wasn't necessary here, and that's the adjustment of the cantilever arm to compensate for lower ceilings. I've seen one such adjustment. That door had a Genie Pro98 with a double carriage (which it ate annually) and ran like absolute crap. LOL!
    Have you ever done this sectional to 1-piece conversion with an insulated door?

    I'm curious what this option costs. My garage is - partially - about 5' deep as a previous owner cannibalized 1/2 the garage in favor of a kitchen enlargement. The old wooden door has to go and this looks like an excellent option for my situation. It's that or frame out that half of the opening and install a single car garage door.

    I have a question why do you not put the end stiles back on before you cap the ends seems like you would be leaving out a lot of structure and support. We also install these door all the time. I recommend to customers to always use the steel back doors. We have done a few pan doors but they are flimsy. A 2 car steel back door works fine with 4 P728's

    • @ALLProGarageDoors
      @ALLProGarageDoors  9 років тому

      Hi R&S, sometimes I do keep the end stiles on before adding the caps on some of the heavier doors but when I have the mfg build it for me (when I don't have time to do it myself) they never have the end stiles...only the endcap, so i'm 50/50 on that, I haven't noticed much difference either way, other than the part of the cap that wraps around the front is slightly away from the face of the door when the end stiles are on it as well. The waynemark 8000 has boxed stiles so I always leave those off so that when I attach the hardware arm I can add a nut to it, if I add the end stile I lose access to add the nut. Nobody down here will touch a steel back door as far as a 1pc conversion goes, most just go with the Styrofoam backed door and keep it light.

    • @ALLProGarageDoors

      Fine thread self tapping screws, because the fine thread will allow a nut to thread onto it just like a bolt.

    Are there any issues with gaps (lack of proper seal) on the sides with the tilt up vs. sectional?

    • @ALLProGarageDoors
      @ALLProGarageDoors  6 років тому +1

      turboparadise Yes, there can be if the door is cut too narrow or if the garage frame is crooked.

    • @turboparadise
      @turboparadise 6 років тому +1

      All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. doesn’t there have to be some gap on the sides of the tilt up garage door for it to function. Can a tilt up seal like a roll up garage door?

    • @ALLProGarageDoors
      @ALLProGarageDoors  6 років тому +1

      turboparadise there is a gap on each side but one piece doors have weather stripping on the sides as well that will take up that gap. The will not seal as well as a sectional door but they can be very close.

      in ca the maximum down payment by law is 10% or $1,000, whichever is less. If your contractor is seeking more than this, they either lack credit or are not legitimate. Beware!
