Big Murff I think so!! It went well. This was at 45,000 miles. Oil was actually not bad. It was more red though, and Mazda sold me the blue oil that’s out now. Other than that, mine only took 4 quarts. Put in 4 and a half, and was quite over. Extracted 1/2 a quart out so it was in the middle of the zone, and once hot, it’s bang on the full mark. Next time may just be a drain and fill in between my intervals for doing the filter as well. Just got this CX5, and I’m liking it so far.
Awesome. Great video. Our 2016 Cx5 is approaching 80k miles at the next oil change. I'll do the transmission filter and fluid while i have it up on the lift.
Unfortunately I didn't get around to the transmission fluid change for various reasons. But I'll be doing it within the next month when I do the oil change and fix the engine oil pan leak (its extremely light). I just wanted to check this video out again! Great how to!
Well done video! This is my weekend project and your video will be very helpful. Curios to see how bad my fluid will look like after 108,000 miles on it.
Thanks! Yah it's really not hard at all. I would recommend placing a large cardboard box underneath your car though. That way if anything spills, it will not stain your garage or driveway. Some people will think they can just do a simple drain and refill of the fluid, but they are forgetting that there is a filter inside also. If that filter gets really dirty, then the fluid cannot circulate throughout the transmission anymore and something will end up going bad. It's probably how most automatic transmission go bad and they cost a lot of money to replace!
@@bigmurff Job all done. No issues except for removing the air intake bolts they were a pain. Surprisingly the fluid wasn't as bad I thought it was going to be. I just did a drain and refill since this was my first attempt to change transmission fluid on any vehicles I have ever owned. I may change the filter out this summer when the weather is warmer since I live in Ohio. Thanks again for sharing you knowledge.
@@shakeandbake9562 You're welcome. Wow that's interesting to hear how clean your old fluid was. Where I live there are a lot of mountainous roads so I'm always driving up and down hills to get around. Just shocked at how filthy my fluid was compared to yours.
Love the video buddy help me out a lot only one question I have I hope you get this message and answer me I want to know what the level of the oil has to be at 50 that's how much I have to fill it after is warm
I've read many times that ATF color has VERY little to do with indicating its wear level. Many have mentioned you don't use proper safety measures to support the car. I don't know if it was a good idea to use impact wrench to screw in ATF pan screw back. Finally, I'd get the filter from Mazda just for the peace of mind. It is in the same price range. I have had 4 CX 5s.
You can use either RTV black gasket maker, or transmission pan rubber gasket, but not both at the same time. Reason being is that the rubber material of the pan gasket VS the material of the RTV are different and both stretches at different rates when exposed to heat. This can eventually lead to a leak. So to avoid that problem just use one type of material for the gasket. If you use the rubber pan gasket, you can spray Permatex copper gasket adhesive to one side so that it will help stick it onto the mating surface while you try to bolt the pan. If you use RTV make sure all surfaces are clean and free of oil. I'd use carburator cleaner or brake cleaner to wipe the surface clean. Hope that helps
What year is your CX-5? Your transmission pan came from the factory with a rubber gasket instead of RTV? Or had you done the service previously and used the rubber gasket already? Did it leak at all with the rubber gasket?
Greetings friend @big murff excellent video, thank you very much for publishing it. I have a question for you I hope you can see me. I have a 2012 Mazda 3 2.0 skyactiv engine, I want to change the transmission fluid but it does not have a drain plug, I would have to remove the ATF-FZ fluid container cover to drain all the used oil, my car already has 127,680 miles traveled. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for sharing the video! I was quite confused because i read a lot that CX-5 has those long-life ATF and does not need to be changed. I started to feel lack of power when i go uphill, and the dealership insisted that my transmission is fine, so i figured i'll change it myself. Is 5 Quarts enough for that kind of job? Thank you so much!
How do you know the temperature of the transmission to put the right level or where do you check that? Regards, Oscar Rubio from Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico.
I read in numerous places that the CX-5 has lifetime transmission fluid and never needs change under normal conditions, due to Skyactiv technology. Ex: www.mazdaoflodi.com/blog/do-you-need-to-change-transmission-fluid-in-a-mazda/
If u have been in the automotive industry long enough, u know this “life time fluid” is just a marketing stuff. That’s same as BMW saying 30000km engine oil change schedule n u know wat? How many engine an turbo failure due to oil sludge build up we have been doing in the past.
Sir, Thanks for a great video. SAFETY FIRST- Never trust a jack to hold the vehicle. USE JACK STANDS!
Thanks a bunch for this video bud! Just bought a 2016 CX5 GT. Did this fluid and filter change this evening. Was nice to have your vid handy.
I'm glad the video was able to help you out! Now you can have a little peace in mind about the transmission until the next time.

Rule number one, never support ur car with the hydraulic jack, get a proper jack stand plz.

I got a kick of how you opened that transmission filter box like a 4 yr old on xmas day!
Thanks for the video...buy some jack stands though...hydraulic jacks can fail suddenly.
Don't get under a car with out jack stands or at least a wood block or something if the jack fails. Great video though!

Skyactiv transmissions require a running engine as well as a level surface at ~120 degree F to check the transmission fluid level.
Nice video do you check trans fluid with the engine running or do you warm the engine turn it off then check fluid level

Did you warm the engine before drain the transmission fluid?
I believe the engine was cold to avoid burning myself with hot fluid
Can you please post a video about only the transmission pan gasket vs. RTV only vs. gasket plus RTV? I’m not sure what to do for my 2015 CX 5.
You can use either RTV black gasket maker, or transmission pan rubber gasket, but not both at the same time. Thx brother. I got the RTV, but I think it’s red, not black?
U should check with engine running (at specified temps ) in Park

Just a Jack?!?!?!? That's #1 lesson of what NOT to do.
Do you recommend changing even if it’s lifetime ?
Always. Fluids deteriorate. Same goes for coolant.
Can you elaborate how you removed the oil pan. Is pretty difficult to do it. Thanks

Adrian Hartanto Ng didnt he already answer that ? Listen to the video again ..
He said buy at least 5 quarts
How do you know the temperature of the transmission to put the right level or where do you check that?

Always measure what you take out and replace it with the same amount.
@@glamdring0007 yes but at same temps...hot fluid expands in volume
Did you ever find the answer ?

That is Felix Dan, from Indonesia.
Should shift to N,D,R while stepping on the brakes to circulate the fluids.
Was this the 2.0 or 2.5 L engine?
Hi this was the 2.0L engine
Thanks, sharing.
Once you put the gasket in did you put any gasket sealer around it
why? it's got a rubber gasket.
great video
You’re lucky to not die under that jack.
I'm wondering where you got the torque specs?
Service manual.
Cx9 Mazda 2011
Can I use valvoline atf maxlife
Hayssszzz Z does it say on the bottle that it meets the mazda specs?
You should of used RTV with the gasket.
Farhan Shahariear was there RTV on the original gasket that was removed ?
