Good to hear “ this is Heidi and Rod”, and to watch you working together. I have 20 year old H paniculatas and usually wait for early Spring to prune, but may just go out now to prune them. They are huge and have bloomed beautifully each year. Love all of my Hydrangeas…about 15 last count.
I just love starting my day with Heidi’s smiling face and that cute northern accent 😁 (I’m from Kentucky so we sound a little different haha) Having Rod there to complete the team was icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing your day ❤️❤️❤️
I wish we were neighbors so we could roll around in our H cuttings, and enjoy during the blooming season together. I have 6 8-10 foot Limelights, 8 - 2 year old Firelights and 6 - 2 year young mini limes. I will be brave and hard prune the big daddies and give the leggy new ones a decent prune. Thank you for filming this!
That worked out great and love your trailer! I love a full summer garden but there’s something about seeing everything cleaned up in the fall, it has its own beauty! ❤
After watching your video the other day of cutting a limelight hydrangea tree way back I tackled my hydrangea tree. I cut it back quite a ways and hope and pray it comes back next summer and looks beautiful.
Could you do a follow up video on how this grew this year? Mine are 9 to 10 feet tall and I want to do a corrective pruning on the hedge. Thank you, John
Thanks Heidi for this video, it’s really helpful. I have a Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea which has grown very tall with only “second story flowers”. The branches at the bottom have completely stopped flowering. Do you think if I prune it hard like this, it might get better and most importantly will not die?
If you trim it back you will create new branching which usually results in more flowers. I cant promise it wont die from the trimming, but I have done this hard trim 2-3 times and lighter trims many times and it is still going strong.
Ouch Heidi, you chopped it by half 😅….. Have a question for you, I have a tree shaped panicle hydrangea that was on my patio, it might have suffered some root rot but I think I intervened in time, still have some green on the stem and had to cut all branches. Will it start again in spring?
I have 2 limelight’s that I planted a year ago. They are proven winners and my tag says not to trim until late winter early spring. Also says they bloom on old wood. So I’m confused!!!! You said they bloom on new wood. I can’t wait for them to get that tall!
Limelight bloom on New wood/growth. We trim in the fall because that is when we have time. You can trim fall or spring. The issue with fall planting is that you may get some new growth if it is still warm out. If we do, I am not going to worry about it.
What is such a shame, and this is the case with almost all videos where pruning takes place, is that the result is not shown in the (late) summer when everything has grown again.
Please do a follow up video once this hydrangea is flowering!
I sure will with my garden tours

Thanks for watching. Enjoy your hydrangeas
i like leaving the blooms over winter, looks nice. I hope my young limelights get to be as big as yours !
Give them time and they will
@@gardencrossings i think they grow so slow because i am sitting and staring at them everyday lol !

I totally agree. It is so freeing seeing everything cleaned up.
You guys make Fall pruning and clean up look fun!!!! 😂
What made it fun was the right tool and a nice weather day.

Great job!
I'm loving these pruning videos! I even bought the craftsman power pruners to make my shrub pruning easier. Thank you!
That is awesome. I hope you like it as much as we do!!! @craftsman
I like this "Are we feeling aggressive"😂❤ I've found my plant people!
😂 We have no fear to just 'hack it' back!
That was a neat pruning tool!!!
We are loving it!
Oh this was so helpful!! My limelight are so big and I am gong to trim them way back now!!
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect! I have a giant one like this and need to cut it way back.
Yes, dont be scared to do it.
Really enjoyed the video.
Glad you enjoyed it

We would love to be sponsored by @craftsman tools but they are not seeing our videos :)
Thanks
You are welcome. Glad it was helpful
This helped with my guilt on chopping my 4 foot hydrangeas to 2 feet because they were falling over on my boxwoods.
No guilt needed, they can handle a good trim.
Do you save any of those beautiful flowers for dried arrangements?
Yes we sure did. We will use them in winter porch pots

@@gardencrossings Thanks so much Heidi, I think I’ll try and prune it a little more this time and see what happens!
How old is this limelight? It’s amazing
It is about 18 years old.

Only time will tell, but i would give it a chance!

This was in late fall, there was no more growth as they went into dormancy. I do have a follow up video around May of last year.

@@gardencrossings Thank you very much, I appreciate this a lot. Your one of the few who show us the follow up! Many thanks! 😘
Do you prune in fall?
I do in my garden because that is when I have time.
Can you take hard wood cuttings at this point?
We do not do cuttings.
Добрый день. Интересно посмотреть как будет цвести эта гортензия на следующий год, после такой обрезки.
"Good afternoon. It is interesting to see how this hydrangea will bloom next year, after such pruning."---- It will be beautiful next year.
What is the tool that Rod is using?
It is a craftsman puner. It is very slick!!!
OK! It’s on my buy list. My Limelight looks just like yours except I have 3 of them in a corner! Over the roof of my house!
wherr could I see the update ?
We have an update video that was done spring of 2023
Akkkkk mine are 8-9 feet and I can only bear to do 1/3 i may do this!!! 😮😮😮
It is a hard thing to do but you will be happy you did
OK 😬!
It's been 11 months, what happened now?
Here is a video showing all the hydrangeas that were trimmed last fall. ua-cam.com/video/cVNbsVB8v7M/v-deo.html
