Two years ago my wife and I put in 3 little limelights along our front yard which looks out on to a very large wooded area of our property. (Our property when we bought it was 1 acre of solid woods and briars. Our house had to be sited on the far northwest corner due to two kettle holes - one in the front, one on the east side). We wanted something to cover the woods and briars that are so prevalent in our area (Zone 7b Cape Cod). The Limelights did amazingly well, so last summer we planted 6 more, 3 Limelights & 3 Firelights. I was thrilled to see your video about your limelights so thank you! I look forward to every one of your posts!
@@growformegardening well let’s hope we get hydrangea blossoms this year! Last year we had a late frost and our Niko Blues never bloomed. The Hydrangea Fest didn’t have very many blue hydrangeas. Maybe we’ll see you there. We go every year. You guys are the best!
The Hedge is Beautiful.. ❤ I planted 13 Limelight Primes in the front of My home in 2022 and they were in 1 gallon containers, only a foot tall. They are now 6 feet tall and doing Fabulous! 🙌 . They are on drip irrigation also and I feed them fertilizer ever 10 days. I am beyond happy to have them Grace the front of my home. I also planted 7 regular Limelight’s along my slanted grassy area above my pond in 2019 and they are now over 7 ft tall. My Husband was on the fence about me planting them there but now it is his favorite part in our yard.. He even trims the grass all around them and helps me every year when I cut them back a bit . We also have Ruby’s, Bobo’s, Annabelle’s and some Everlasting’s sprinkled around our property..We Love PW Hydrangeas.❤️🙌 New Jersey zone 6 A
We have an old farmhouse on a busy road. We planted Blue Spruce along the perimeter. Then they lost their needles on the bottom, so we planted a hedge of Limelight Hydrangeas. It looks amazing!! And gives us privacy! We love it!
The hydrangea hedge is amazing. Do you think the mite infestation of the centers of the bushes is due in part to lack of air circulation? I am so glad you documented the journey of the hedge. Sometimes as gardeners, we forget to document the journey of our gardens. Thanks for informing us of treatment options and hoping the treatment eliminates the mites.
@@growformegardening wishing you luck with your battle with mites. Are you intending to limb up the hedge? I have limbed up some of my hydrangeas so I could plant underneath
Thanks for this video. Very interesting that these mights are more prevalent because of higher temps which most of us are experiencing. Sorry that this has happened to your gorgeous hydrangea hedge. Your research will help many of us if we get these broad mights.
Your Limelight Hydrangea hedge still looks beautiful! You have inspired my husband and I to plant one this year!! Looking forward to the end of season sales!! Thank you for also sharing your challenges and plan of attack. We look forward to watching your progress and feedback.
I have a limelight hedge too. This year I pruned twice in the spring to get smaller (and more) blooms and to prevent flopping. (March and May). It turned out great but took a leap of faith. Zone 8a
I found you guys in my research for a limelight hedge. I was just thinking the other day how this hedge doesn’t get much attention anymore with your new beautiful garden. So glad you did this video 😊
Loved seeing your hedge! It was great to hear how you prune the hedge for strong stems and a uniform shape. I have also switched to compost for my mulch. I purchased a large bag of Holly Tone this spring before I found out it acidifies your soil. Living in New England I don't need to acidify my soil! I'll be buying Rose Tone next year. I wish you luck with your mite issue and I would be interested to see how it works out. Thank you for sharing!
Love ur videos. Lots of information for us to learn, thanks . Good luck with the limelight. Beautiful garden . U guys did a wonderful job . Pretty landscape and lush garden ❤
I need to do more hydrangea drifts after seeing your video. My recommendation to you, Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ayesha’ Mophead. I spotted it in a Claus Dalby video and had to have it. The most largest, tight, pink flowers I have ever seen on a hydrangea. The individual petals are like little cups. Amazing! I’m Also on the hunt for Oakleaf Gatsby Gal. Great video today!
What a great video,,, was going to do a boxwood hedge between my home and neighbors, but am now considering a limelight hedge. Your videos are so thorough. You have gorgeous David Austin roses in your gardens, could you do a video on how you care for them? Thank you!!!
Yes, this is a problem I’m also having . Thank you guys! My question is since the season is coming to a close here in 6B. Should we treat the soil this fall . Just do a hydrangea clean up in late fall instead of spring and apply a systemic soil drench - mites do overwinter in soil. I also have aster yellows, coneflower mites, the spotted lantern flies ( all new issues this year). Plus the usuals- sawflies, Japanese beetles, powdery mildew, boxwood mites, psyllid. My plants & I need therapy ! I think I’ll take this inquiry up with Proven Winners-plants really cost toooo much, plus all the research, supplemental products purchased, water bill, time & attention -can’t afford to lose not one!
Agreed. We put so much in to the garden and it stinks to lose things. I am planning to spray a few more times to knock them back and as the weather cools they should slow down too. I will definitely do something in spring as a preventative. Once that’s done I feel like we should be in the clear
I used compost in my hydrangeas this year as well and noticed lots of little bugs and they may have been mites but I didn’t have them tested. My compost was not organic but I vowed to make sure it is organic the next time!!!! I think the compost had the bugs in it!!! My hydrangeas finally rebounded but not as prolific as last year….lesson learned!!!
I have a request. Now that you two are expert pruners 😎 could you please do a detailed hydrangea hedge pruning video next year? I would love to know if you’re following the 1/3 guideline or if you’ve maybe come up with a better way to prune to make the stems stronger. I have watched this video more than once and it inspired me to plant my own hedge of 11 limelights. Thank you!! ❤️
Thanks for all the great videos! Your garden inspired me to plant a limelight hedge…. Just did it this morning, used the same spacing as you guys since it looks so great. Mine’s only 5 plants though.
The limelight hydrangeas are stunning. I love the natural edging in front of the hydrangeas. I would like to create a natural edge to my landscape, but we have Bermuda. Do you think this would be an option with a Bermuda lawn?
Gorgeous hedge! I've planted a hydrangea hedge myself and was advised to place two to three plants per meter to create a nice and full hedge. Planted them in the spring but it already feels crowded. Should I take some plants out to give them more room to grow?
@@growformegardening thank you so much for your quick reply! It’s a Limelight as well. They’re about 50 cm’s tall (sorry I don’t know the inch size 😅) and some are already creating blooms
This was such an informative video. I have always felt overwhelmed by how to use drip irrigation, thinking it had to be professionally installed, but now I think I can totally do this. I appreciate you relay the information in easy to understand terms. How do you plan an area? Do you figure out what you are going to plant before going to the nursery or visit and let that inspire you?
I’m glad you feel more confident. The kit on Amazon changed the game. You can also connect that to a timer for even less work! We used to just buy what we liked but now we’ve gotten a little more methodical.
You guys, it is so gorgeous! Hard to believe it is only 5 years old. Its so mature looking! Is the bioadvanced spray what you used on Japanese Beetles too? I'm thinking ours might finally be gone, but thinking of next year already...
Check out the new Hydrangea called Eclipse. It was just released last week. Cranberry colored flowers with near black leaves. The leaves stay very dark all season long. This is a First Editions plant.
When Eric pruned the first two years he focused on making sure they were the same height. So it was less about strength and "correct" pruning and more to shape them.
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful hedge with us. I’m wondering if you have experience with Fire Light Hydrangeas? Please share if you would. 🙏 ❤❤❤
Hello! Thanks for this video! Have you ever planted a hydrangea on a slope? Will it grow upwards, upright, after compensating for the slope? Or is it going to droop over down the incline and tip over if I don't assist it and growing upwards? It's not a huge incline. Maybe 35°
We have actually. I find that they grow upward as if the slope wasn't there. I would just make sure to mulch heavily below the hydrangea because the roots are shallow.
Your limelights are beautiful! Have you tried Captain Jack’s Deadbug Brew? It’s still natural and far more effective on mites and other pests (moths, moth caterpillars, and a host of other pests) than neem oil.

I am so glad you documented the journey of the hedge. Sometimes as gardeners, we forget to document the journey of our gardens. Thanks for informing us of treatment options and hoping the treatment eliminates the mites.
I thought about that...but this kind of mite really buries itself tightly under the leaves. I don't think they are too worried about circulation.
@@growformegardening wishing you luck with your battle with mites. Are you intending to limb up the hedge? I have limbed up some of my hydrangeas so I could plant underneath
