Thank you for posting this. So much inspiration for me as well as humility. Astounding musicianship all round. Humility because every player was head, shoulders and mountain peaks above my playing,
Well said! Thank you for watching, we're glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to subscribe for more!
I play live alot...it's amazing how you play things flawlessly at home by yourself. But then you get in front of a crowd and it all goes to $h!t. Tons of respect for these guys to play so well in front of a crowd critiquing your every note.
Seriously !!
Same with recording. As soon as they cue you, the mind and the fingers loose each other- at least for me. Mad respect for these dreadnaught masters.
The reason is this. When you’re by yourself you aren’t concerned about the outcome, you just play. You get in front of people and end up trying too hard. Read “The Inner Game Of Music”
@@toddjones9975 So true. Hit a clam at home and you will immediately forgive yourself and keep right on playing like it never happened. On stage you judge yourself harshly and it affects what comes next as you desperately try forget, recover and carry on. That look on Mathew Taylor's face as he finishes the first tune says it all. I think the real pros are so good because the stage is their home, so they play like they're at home.
“It’s easy. It’s just jazz....”
As a guitar player (note- who CANNOT do what these folks are doing) I really enjoy the flat pickers who try to incorporate the lower, even bass notes, of the chords they are soloing over, it really adds a wholeness to a single guitar's sound. And I know it isn't easy!
Well said! Thanks for watching and commenting. Be sure to subscribe for more!
It definitely gives it a fuller sound.
Crosspicking... it's key for those solo flatpickers!
Been to many many Winfields. Actually leaving for 2023 tomorrow. These musicians completely blow the roof off. Think of the thousands of hours of practice and dedication it takes to play like this!!
We're filming this year too!
Wow, every one of these guys are just fantastic. Talk about hours and hours of practice by yourself, and then being able to play it on stage! They are all big time winners and players.
We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting this AMAZING group of Flatpickers ! What a Show -
I can tell you after playing fingerstyle for so many years that even the CHAIR you sit in makes a HUGE difference in your performance! Great job everyone! :)
Absolutely brilliant, heartening and a pure pleasure to listen to these supremely talented people. Thank you
What a great post! All of these young men played very well and the order of finish seemed fair and accurate. Holten seems to be a unique and special talent and so young! Good job to all!
All incredibly talented musicians with bright futures! Thank you for watching. Be sure to subscribe for more!
Great music and great players. Thank you Acoustic Shoppe for filming all of this.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Amazing pickers. All are winners in my eyes. Thank you for posting😎
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for watching 😄
I think Justus from Poplar Bluff was my pick of the great group who played. Wow! I may be a bit biased toward Mo. 🙂
I could listen to Ian Ly all day long! He may not have had the most fast pyrotechnic passages, but in my estimation he was the most artistic/musical/complete musician.
Exactly what I was thinking, the most musical out there
Yup. He's in the Blake school. Lilting and full-sounding.
He had my vote too.
Agreed. He was the perfect balance of technical skills and feel
Agreed. Wonderful dynamics.
Thanks for posting! Loved all of the performances. Justus would’ve been my pick as well, but all the players are incredibly talented.
I could listen to this stuff all day!
Thanks for posting this. Nice to see the great picking.
Doc Watson would have been singing while playing that stuff...😁
Jokes aside. This is one of the most wholesome videos I've watched in a long time. You can really feel that in the end, it's all about the music.
In my eyes, all of these guys is a winner. Not just because they all play fantstic guitar, but also because they all seem to be modest, decent people suporting each other.
In the end, it all boils down to taste.
All of you played incredibly well!
Thanks for sharing this. You guys are the best. And so are the flat pickers
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Ian Ly from Cali by a country mile ! He was by far the most musical.
So much talent! Thanks for watching.
I agree completely. That guy’s gonna be big
By far.
Reminded me of Norman Blake's playing style.
I'm with you 100% on that!
This was the clip I needed today. Excellent stuff.
All amazing guitar players. Picking a winner from this group would be a difficult task. I realize that Matthew Taylor did make a couple of 'flubs', but I loved some of his chordal structure and the overtones he achieved, beyond what the others did.
He's very talented. Thanks for watching and commenting! Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more!
Matt's selection was technically much more difficult than many of the others. I think he also has a superior instrument, but everything's debatable. Holten deserved the win.
yep, great right hand and a little inefficient in the left, but hey Billy Strings flails a bit too.
@@carlosreira2189 billy never flails
@@guitarman1477 No, but he's not the most efficient right hand ever. I honestly don't know how he nails every note. Would love to see a close up video from Oh what's his name, the guy who analyzes all the picking of shredders, mostly electric players. Cuz Strings is a prodigy, no doubt.
Justus Ross just killed it on his final song!!!!! I would liked to see him win, but they were all fantastic. It's hard too imagine how anyone could be that good and come in last!!!! They're all winners in my book.
Agreed. All very good, But he had the best groove/timing I think.
Best song of the whole thing imho.
Definitely my favorite in the whole vid
Agreed. All great technical players but there was something very listenable about Justus’ playing.
Soooooo good
WOW, WOW and well, just- umm- Wow! 😲 these pickers talent AND tunes they're choosing puts a huge smile on my face.Nothing and I mean nothing, comes nowhere near this genre in terms of sheer musicianship and expertise -- just blows me away every time( and a big-- ole absolutely 2 the fan who said the great Tony Rice would hopefully B proud AND pleased as punch @ the proceedings😉💯🎸🎶🎵
awesome. thanks for posting.
22:00 is my favorite moment in the whole thing. Ian is a true artist
First, thanks so much for posting this!! I really wanted to see some videos when I saw the winners on Bluegrass Today! I wish I could have been there! 😁 All great playing, and congratulations to all the finalists! I was most excited by all the Jake Workman licks... Justus Ross and Holten Doucette... 🔥 SO GOOD! And Hickory Snow played by Holten for his final song... YEAH!!! I hope I can come some year; again congrats to everyone!
All top three winners are Jake’s former and current students 😊
Confidence and solid tone, no "electric light" here. Super.👍
Justus Ross plays incredibly well! I'm afraid my pinky would be all jammed up in the strings if I tried playing that fast. Way to go, Justus! Cool name too!
He's extremely talented. Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe for more!
That whole area is so filled with talent for those couple of weeks that it's not funny!! I drive by that area every day going to work and seeing those campgrounds just packed with music lovers is astounding!! I went one time and was a blast! Haven't been back there, been too busy doing other things in life!
If you have a way to go to the Winfield Kansas, Walnut Valley Fall Festival you need to go its worth every penny!
So true! Thanks for watching!
Just amazing. 25 years I can’t even come close. Your just born with certain things. I play hours a day 6-7 days a week and I will never get there.
Two more weeks and I get to see BILLY STRINGS in Oklahoma City! Can’t wait!
Woohoo! Should be an awesome show!
That band is so tight and creative. I'd love to see them live.
loved the skill and effort. Amazing
Some very talented musicians up there! Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe for more.
Thanks for sharing.
You bet. Thank you for watching!
I wish I could play half as good as any one of these guys. Really good stuff.
Us too😅 Lots of talent up there! Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe for more!
They were all awesome but I thought the second place winner was the best. His clarity and precision was outstanding. I heard very few finger position buzzez and only one or two dead note catches, very impressive! Tough call for the judges.
Agreed! Very clean playing.
So delighted to watch this❤🎉❤
Thanks for sharing!
I won’t even bother deciding a favorite. Immense talent all around, each with unique quality and skill. Feel bad for the judges.
The future of flatpicking is in good hands!❤
We had the exact same thought. 🙌
Love this!!!❤
We're glad! Thank you for watching!
Great job all performers and engineers and organisers... can i suggest for next performance it would be nice to be able to hear the accompaniment in the mix... it's there but only just...
Great suggestion! We'll see what we can do next year. Thanks for watching, feel free to subscribe for more!
Gosh I could feel Adam Wrights positive vibe thru the whole thing especially mentoring the younger generation that’s why this great art form will always continue 👏
The art form will continue without one particular individual. As to mentoring.. look up the definition.
All fantastic but I liked Justus Ross' tone the best, had dynamics and feel...outstanding
He's so talented! Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe for more!
I love that the mic stand has a brake rotor for the base :)
What a great idea for keeping that delicate condenser mic safe
Dang. I'm halfway through but Jacob has my vote so far. Well done sir.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe for more!
Awesome Talent, I am Humbled. Play On......
These guys are all fantastic!!! Keep on pickin!!🎵🎶🎵
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
When I closed my eyes I could hear the spirit of CW’s music in Ian Ly’s playing amazing
Thank you for watching! Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more!
Agreed I like him the best. Others were faster but he's the one I kept trying to see behind that mike thinking other fingers were getting in there making them melodies
Ian has the touch. Sounds like Tony Rice.
I’ve been playing since 1965 and still can’t play like I want to. I guess one is never satisfied. Oh well I will take what I got.
Much respect to all pickers great job! wow!❤
Ian Ly was my choice. So smooth.
They’re all amazing!
Yes they are! Very impressive pickers! Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe for more.
Thanks for the heart. Who’s the acoustic shoppe?
These young folks can pick at my house anytime! I'll supply the instruments AND the food!!!
The Old Time Fiddlers convention is in town right up the road this weekend, I hope to see some of these pickers there!
Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe for more!
@@AcousticShoppe I did thanks!
Love this flat picking. I surely would never have to pick out the winner, they all are fantastic players.
Absolutely. Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe for more!
The winners -all 3 made me wanna dance. 👍
I've listened 2 this wonderful style for awhile now and, I just thought of something that occurred about the genre, these cats are playing all kinds of notes-- but here's the thing, they're staying.on ONE chord!! Truly amazing😳🙆💟
Justus plays in the group Kentucky Just Us, their banjo player Jesse won first place for banjo this year!
So much talent in that group! Thanks for watching😄 Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more!
Jesse Meador - 1st place. Yes he's with Kentucky Just Us!
Notice how much more refined the picking became after the pressure was off and the votes had been counted. Forget the competition and just have fun! Put your smile into your music like EVH!
Remember ... it's not just about technique ... it's abour Art and Expression .
Excellent display! I would have given it to Adam Wright myself, though.
First guy was my favorite. Something about his playing. And dam that guitar sounded good
Watch Clarence White for a great example of tone, flawless execution and efficiency. Fingers always close to the fingerboard and impeccable right hand technique.
WOW. I really like this stuff. Tony rice Jr.
Serious prices, by the way how did all the players end up with a guitar of the brand they were already playing?
great guys !
Thanks for watching!
Very nice. Actually it's excellent 👌
#2 place winner was best flatpicker imo
Definitely very talented! Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe for more!
First place was awarded by a woman that sounded like his mom, having watched him grow from nothing to now. such a darling..... ok.
Those Jake Workman harmonics in St. Anne's Reel! Yeah!!
Thanks for the video ! But in the future, could you make sure we have a clear view of the players' picking hand ?
Sure thing! Thanks for watching and leaving us a suggestion.
Justus Ross was the best imo. He was playing crazy like it's a cajun fiddle and not a guitar.
wow! great
So many wonderful creative interpretative personality driven different..but similar..guitar artisans..yummm
This almost makes me want to start playing with a pick. Almost lol
In all seriousness. What an amazing bunch of pickers. There's a lot of heart on that stage.
Couldn't have said it better. Thanks for watching! Feel free to subscribe for more!
Darryl Rutherford straight out of Otoe. How is Sam doing bro? I tried to reach out to you years ago but got nothing back. Hope you and the family is good man.
Is there somewhere we can find out what tuning some of these guys were playing in? Amazing. As someone already commented. I am inspired and humbled. :) Thanks for sharing these awesome pickers.
Well as good as they all were I had JR #1 spot. He added a ton more musically by just adding more bass notes.
Just an entire different feel it made
So correct my fellow picker and grinner
What song are they playing at the 3rd place and runner up section?
Don't see how yall can pick a winner incredible playing
Anyone have a list of what songs each player performed?
Great job, everyone! Only thing I am missing on this is the names of the tunes. Anyone have them?
What's the tune Ian Ly playing? Thanks in advanced stranger. Loved is picking, so clean and filled with heart.
So good! What was Justus Ross’s first tune?
Way to go Adam!
🙌
You can hear Irish roots in some of this music. Not sure if there are more roots. Great playing.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe for more!
Scottish fiddle tunes, too.
It’s hard to say who wins so,e times some great technique and feel from all who played.
Really good
Doc Watson is smiling from above!
RACEK KILLED IT.
I've been playing a long time. Winner in my book is Justus Ross
Justus, you're #1 in my heart
Justus is so talented🙌 Thanks for watching!
2nd place has better time feel than 1st place imo
Justus was my favorite. He has "it."
Smoookin❤
Well said! Thanks for watching!
Not an expert on flat picking but Ian seemed the best to my ears.
Very cool. If anyone knows if these vids exist for previous years, please point me in that direction.
There might be, but this is our first one! Thanks for watching. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more!
Chordgoblin, for many years the festival (Walnut Valley Association) would not allow anyone to record the contest. Instead they hired a company to film it (Legleiter Video) and only offered each contestant the opportunity to purchase their own performance, and no other part of the contest. As far as I know most people didn't purchase the recordings, and if they did they didn't post them ( most of us work hard on our contest arrangements and prefer they not be posted online for other contestants to see and hear). I did purchase mine, I used them to critique myself and determine what I needed to improve on. My performance in 2019 was not recorded, Mr. Legleiter passed away and I don't know of any other recordings. However, I did post my performance from 2013 on my YT channel, I can post a link to my final round and you can follow links to my channel for the other round and trophy presentation. But I don't know of any other videos posted, aside from this one by The Acoustic Shoppe. ua-cam.com/video/OsjkLqENEIA/v-deo.html
@@AcousticShoppe I'm really glad you recorded and posted it and hope you do it for many future years. I want to watch other contestants' videos not to copy them but for the huge amounts of inspiration! And to see what general ideas the winners are executing.
One of the greatest performances at the WInfield flatpicking contest was this one - it's on several records: ua-cam.com/video/Iy87kXZpeWo/v-deo.html. He also won the Fiddle contest at Winfield.
they're all dam good
How does someone enter these competitions?
At the fiddle festivals, you just show up and get on the list. I don't know how they do it in Winfield.
Holten FTW. They got it right.
what was the judging criteria? I Felt that Ian Ly played the cleanest and tastiest sounds.. How did Ly not get First?
Tone truly comes from the fingertips !!
Tips, right hand, and pick choice for us flatpickers
Anyone know the name of the tune that Justus Ross played?
I never knew that these guys could play with out a capo at the second fret.
