Hey guys! Its your good buddy Uncle Ben here with Weekend Wankshop 257, in which you're going to learn the secrets of visualizing triads for tapping across the fretboard!!!
When Eddie Van Halen laid down the shred gauntlet with Eruption on Van Halen's debut album, the collective guitar world was in awe, especially of the dramatic, classical-style tapped arpeggios that close the guitar solo masterpiece out. 3 note tapping became a regular part of every player's vocabulary in the early 80's, and is still a major part of lead playing today!
But EVH wasn't just tapping random notes from a scale; he was outlining chord triad arpeggios! Major, minor, and diminished, to be exact, in all different inversions. But how can we learn to see these shapes across a single string and bust out our own tapped arpeggios? The secret is NOT memorizing long strings of random fret numbers or going on scavenger hunts looking for the right notes. Its all about the power of the 3rd!!!
The Major 3rd interval is equivalent to 2 whole steps. the minor 3rd interval is 1 and 1/2 steps. If you can visualize those jumps on the fretboard, its EASY to make any tapped triad happen!
Use these easy tricks and start shredding today:
Major: root note + M3 + m3
minor: root note + m3 + M3
diminished: root note +m3 +m3
And thats it! In this lesson, i'm going to show you all the basic interval shapes and how to link them up to create Major, minor, and diminished arpeggios, then take you through ALL the triads in G Major, and at the end, we will even get into understanding inversions and how to play around with them. Its everything you need to know for those classic EVH sounds!

What secrets of the stars do you want to learn next? Let me know in the comments below!
Thanks for watching!!! What other EVH secrets do you want to learn next?!
Ben Eller - how do you make harmonics scream?
Ben Eller How bout bending then tapping and pulling off on that bend like in the Panama solo?, John Mayer also uses that trick a lot too.
The solo to “Romeo Delight.”
Yes.
Hey Ben, How bout tapped harmonics patterns?
The fact that the world gave us uncle Ben for free is wild.
True dat.
@Frank Rottach if you hate Slavery, never vote Democrat. History is important.
uncle ben eller is an incredible teacher/ musician
Never cared for his rice dishes but his guitar lessons are second to none.
Lol Uncle Ben is the slightly hardass teacher that you think is trying to insult you at first but ends up being an absolutely amazing mentor and helping you unlock the secrets for yourself by pointing you in a direction that helps your progress grow. Thanks Ben. You are a huge reason for my guitar renaissance and certainly the main reason why I have made more progress on guitar in the last four months than I ever had in 10 years of wankery. Now I always have something to be thinking about, practicing, or trying to unlock on the guitar neck. You made a guitar neck a “big, friendly place“ for me Ben, something that I never felt like over an entire decade of playing guitar. Thank you for what you and channels like yours do for the love of this instrument
Happy to help, buddy!!!
I feel the same. I stopped having guitar lessons when I got into university and stopped practising. So I've been playing for 10 years, but I feel like I have the same knowledge and skills for 5 or 6. I don't have the money to get guitar lessons with the same teacher again, but I got the time and Uncle Ben is definitely helping me with my "guitar renaissance".
Did someone say triads
Music is Win it’s like when two notes that love each other invite a third party into the mix to shake things up.
Youre both here.... Awkward. Im waiting for the catch a cheater guy to kick my bathroom door in
@@BenEller lol
Very cool , 2 of my favorite channels in the comments
Holy macaroni this made me laugh. Thank you gentlemen.
fancy seeing you here
Uncle Ben just casually putting out breakthrough lessons for free like it's no big deal. Freaking awesome.
oh you just wait. I haven't unleashed any of my REAL artillery for free yet. Planning on making some lesson packages that are going to blow minds.
This is the best lesson for composing two hand tapping licks on the fly I've ever watched. Thank you.
Wynn Blevins thank you!!!

Haha awesome! Thanks Eddie!
Dude.... Really?! I gave up searching for tapping videos. Never could find a clear and simple lesson. I'm thrilled that I stumbled upon your video. FINALLY!! I can now visualize and clearly comprehend how to construct tapping patterns! You have won the Internet this week! Bravo my good man! Cheers!
THE BEST LESSON I've watched in a long time. Ben you ROCK
When my mom asked if I wanted to take tap lessons, I wish I didn't misunderstand and it was this kind and not the one that got me into fights at school 😔
Lmao , O hell thats great !
As long as ya WON those fights. You KNOW why they put those taps on the toes of the shoes, right? So ya could kick the bullies right in the 'prunes'! 😁
This was the best guitar lesson I ever had. Finding inversions by simple patterns. My mind is opened. Thank you!
I love the fact how you included the number sequence (4,8,15,16,23,42) from LOST in 00:36. My all-time favorite TV Show.
Lastly, great lesson and video, as always.
Ben Eller is brilliant both as a musician and a teacher. I was privileged to attend a class he taught in Raleigh along with Andy Wood. I wish that I had this teaching 50+ years ago when I took up guitar.
EVH was so innovative. He deserves all the accolades and credit he gets as one of the greatest guitarists ever. Was there anyone else doing triad chord tapping before VH? If so, they were very few and far between.
This simplifies things for when one is enjoying whiskey and feels the urge to rock out
Wow. This “penny dropping” lesson was a great big Xmas gift, wrapped, tied with a bow, and delivered on time. Best gift ever. Thank you!!!
Sixth Sanctum Media Thats great 👍 it doesn’t happen to all of us 😉
It's amazing how you always take ideas that seem so complicated, all of the sudden seem stupid simple. Thank you!
It’s all of a sudden. Stupid simple.
Most is simple , its the god damn speed of freaking light that he played that keeps it stupid complicated
I'm 61, started playing before my fingers were big enough. Actually started playing when I was 13. We just played whatever we had to because we were off the farm.
It's fun seeing how young popular guitar players do it. At this point in life it's just another thing you know how to do. Thanks for the tips..
Awesome visualization method to tap major/minor/diminished triads! Thanks Uncle Ben. You Rock!!!!
So glad to have you around Uncle Ben.You are THE best in my book!
Thanks Ben. Really appreciate you taking the time to do this. I leaned something. Which is always good. 👊😁
This is great! I've been playing triads all over, but not on the same string. This helps to visualize things in a new way, plus, I get to learn tapping. Sweet. Thx.
Appreciate this lesson Ben. It clears up a few things for those of us who have always played by ear & are lesson-less & never had music theory in a way that makes sense. All the best & stay well !!!
excellent lesson. Picked it up straightaway as you explained it in simple terms. Thank you very much indeed.
Brilliant, Absolutely love the Lesson, Keep Rockin Ben, Cheers
Holy hell brother. That was awesome. Making the difficult easy, not just seem easy, but with a little practice just plain easy. Thanks Ben!!!
Thanks for the video. You post really useful effective stuff without causing any information overload. Keep up the great work. 🤘
How Cool and Easy is This Lesson!!!! I am going to Learn this, Pronto! Thumbs Way Up Ben!
Thank You! Uncle Ben and Happy Holidays!
Pure gold, thanks for taking the time to explain it so clearly.
Hey Ben. Great lesson. Easy to visualize! Thank you so much for all your great lessons and hard work!
Best Training Video I've Seen. Thank You
amazing. You've blown my mind with this stuff. Its like finding gold that was right in front of you this whole time
I love your videos Ben. Thank you for helping us. I love you and your the Best!
Public schooled here. Trying to mathematically traverse the fret numbers still sucks.
You'll realise how ineffective that method is once you manage to break from it.
All I have done is self teach myself on alot of techniques with the watching of Uncle Ben's porn stash(Makes my wrist and forearm extremely strong) I know alot of people who are still in the prehistoric era of guitar playing because of trying to be more mathematical or more music theory when learning. I figured I would learn everything by eyes and ears, with as much repetition as possible, then I will learn the theory of it all. It just seems like the theory would be easier to learn that way, mabe I'm just different. I'm still not where I wanna be,not even close. But days go by,and I can tell I'm getting better, faster, and more precise in note/finger changes, and hand synchronization. And my friends notice it, they are like "What note are you playing?" I'm like "I have no freaking clue, I just hear a certain tone! G mabe,E. Lol"
Ya gotta use that 'new math'... 1 + 1 = 3.26934758 ➗ 🚲... 😁
Math is for losers. Just experiment with the guitar. Don't think about the numbers.
Thank you for verbally explaining to me how my brain made this work to begin with. I'm self taught/learning, and couldn't connect the dots any time before when I pieced together these scale structures.
This was an extremely helpful video Uncle Ben, thank you! I really appreciate the simple descriptions.
This is really good Ben, nice to see a well explained 'simple' lesson that I've already found useful. Thanks 👍🤘
You're such a good teacher. Excellent.
I just gotta say thank you for posting this vid. I watched a few days ago and this lesson really stuck with me over the past few days. I thinking about this when practicing guitar. Cheers man and keep doin what you do.
Excellent lesson.... theory explained concisely and simply! Perfect.
Excellent. So lucid and yet so comprehensive
Great lesson, I love it when things are simplified. Thanks
Thanks for showing an easier way to look at this arpeggio technique. This visualization will help to more easily learn the fretboard whether using 2-handed tapping or any other style.
What an awesome approach to this topic. Great job!
Amazing lesson, you just changed my life. Thank you!
You made this so much easier then how it was explained to me. !!
I mean I’ve been wanting to learn this for years. It you made this so easy. I got it within minutes. !!
Mahalo from Hawaii !!

Really nice visual trick a fantastic visual lesson easy to learn and practice
Absolutely slipping this into my practice routine and thanks for this
Holy guacamole dude, this is so awesomely simple. I love it. I always actually wondered how to construct tapping licks and had to sort of try and figure it out by ear but to see this laid out in a way s easy to understand is awesome!
That was an awesome lesson. Just would never have thought of exploring triads like that. So simple and good lord…so much more to learn than just tapping!
Thanks for all you do Ben. Bless
Great lesson Ben! You really explained it in a way that was very easy to understand!
Wow man! This is the first lesson of tapping that came through. Thank you dude!
Brilliantly done, Ben. Long live the music of EVH. Rock in peace.
This video is awesome thanks so much for your great teaching.

Very clear explanation and very useful trick... I'll start practicing it! Thank you so much for sharing it❤️😉❤️😉
Thanks Ben! Excellent Job! Great Tutorial!!!!
Very logical Ben. I can immediately use this.
Thanks much for simplifying and sharing.
Great teaching Ben. you explain this very well. Teaching is an art. Some have it some don't. You are very good. you make it look easy. Thanks
Total Dope way of music instruction, thank you BE!
The best lesson on tapping!! Simply awesome, fun and easy! Just awesome Master!
Great explanation simplified. Thank you
Thank you for this Ben. It was something I knew but hadn't really applied. I immediately looked the intro for "Hot For Teacher" and was able to figure out what chords he was using. Much easier than figuring out what notes he was using and then figuring out the chords.
Thank you ! I`ve been looking for you for years !!! Great lesson !
Exceptional instructing talent, Uncle Ben!!! 🙌
Well done, Ben! I like the way you presented this to a guitar player with very little music theory knowledge! Also like your dry sense of humor!!
good shit, I'm 65 these days and back in 69 there was not much going for tapping...appreciate your skill, thanks
This is a really good explanation. Great job.
This is what I was looking for, thanks. Very professional.
This is the best explanation of tapping I have ever seen!!!
What a great teacher! Love your vids!
Thanks for this video. All the Tri-ads you did, I have played/discovered at some point.
But this video puts them all in to perspective.
Nice one! ;)
Really well taught lesson. Thank you sir! Very easy to follow.
Buenísimo! al fin lo entendí! Gracias por compartir! SALUDOS desde Bilbao!
Thank you uncle Ben for this tutorial ! !
pls post more of this tapping lesson if you can.
This is such a good lesson and you make it fun and easy to follow.
This is a great lesson, thank you Uncle Ben
Thank you for demystifying the tapping thing. As no old-head, I didn't grow up with that stuff, but I'm often asked to play that technique. Now i can work on it from a sensible framework. Still learning after playing 50 years.
Another lightbulb moment. Thanks Uncle B
Wow so simple! Thanks again! I am always searching for notes (which isn't a bad thing). What a great shortcut. I added either half or whole step pull offs from the root for that nice melodic 7 chord vibe. I almost skipped over this lesson, glad I didn't!!!
Ben your a great teacher! Thanks for sharing your passion with us.
Stefan Bacha and thank you for watching!
You are an amazing teacher. Your analogies are spot on. Great stuff.
Magic revealed! Great subject! Thanks.
Well, color me stoked!! Easily understood breakdown of an often mysterious technique. Thanks! Can't wait to get sad playin' Dm. 😎
Awesome!!
Thanks for posting this
Brilliant lesson! Thanks
One of the best tricks I've heard in a long long time. Thanks Ben.
This has to be the best video I've ever seen on tapping. I understand it a lot more now.
Great video as always.
I’ve always viewed it as:
3 frets between root and major 3rd
2 frets between root and minor 3rd
Not a guitar player, but a fan of -VH- since 78. Your teaching style held my attention to the end. I even understood everything. More knowledge for me 💪😉. I'm definitely be coming back for more.
thanks for watching, man! Lots of other EVH content here on my channel.
I really enjoy your videos , Ben. I have been playing guitar since the beatles came out. I can play pretty good and can read the treble cleff. I am 69 years old. In all my years, I have never tapped or studies tapping. I think with your video help, I will be adding a new dimension to my guitar playing abiliites. You explain things in a way that starts to make sense to me. I am going to take notes of your videos make diagrams on the staff or tab and relly study what you are saying. Much aprreciation.
Content from Uncle Ben is like Christmas all year round! Keep up the lessons Uncle Benny \m/
