uh huh who underrated them? In 2005, Tim de Lisle of The Guardian argued that Roxy Music are the second most influential British band after the Beatles. He wrote, "Somehow, in a landscape dominated by Led Zeppelin at one end and the Osmonds at the other, they managed to reach the Top 10 with a heady mixture of futurism, retro rock'n'roll, camp, funny noises, silly outfits, art techniques, film references and oboe solos. And although their popularity has ebbed and flowed, their influence has been strikingly consistent."[5] In 2019, The Economist also described them as "the best British art-rock band since the Beatles", arguing that "among English rock acts of that time, their spirit of adventure and their impact" was "surpassed only" by David Bowie.[57] Bowie himself cited Roxy Music as one of his favourite British groups and in a 1975 television interview described Bryan Ferry as "spearheading some of the best music to come out of England."[58]
I agree. Roxys version is full bodied. Neil's version is awesome, and centers around 1 musician, Roxys involves multiple musicians, And no one is gonna argue that Bryans voice is a scoch smoother. So I say Roxy for the win
@@jessewoody5772 On alternate weeks Ferry's version is my favorite of the two, except when Young's is. When I compare two equally gifted musicians (Jimi and Stevie Ray, for example) I favor the original artist a bit. For how would the cover artist have a timeless composition to improve upon without that original masterpiece?
Just in case you haven't seen it, check out their concert footage from their performance in Lyon. The version of this song is just amazing, as is the entire concert.
I saw Roxy Music on the 1983 tour at the Baltimore Civic Center, with Modern English opening for them. I was not that interested in their earlier work, but when Avalon came out, I was hooked. That album is a masterpiece that still holds up after all these years. Brian Ferry and Roxy put on a great show that night, with imaginative lighting effects, and an amazingly trio of back up singers. Phil Manzanera and the other guitarist kill it on this song, but, sorry, neither can shred like Neil!
@@paulcropper4717 That would make a great Crazy Horse rocker. Dance Away could make an awesome slower Crazy Horse jam. Neil could probably turn More Than This into a beautiful acoustic ballad. Glad you like my idea.
I saw this show at the Universal Amphitheater it was my second Roxy Music show after the Manifesto Tour at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1979. I saw Bryan Ferry every time he came to Southern California culminating with the Roxy Music 50th Anniversary Tour at the Forum. Thank you Bryan for a lifetime of great music and memories. The 1988 Bete Noir Tour and the 2014 tour in Santa Barbara were incredible.
They should have closed with this number. Absolutely fantastic and a total effort by the band and singers. Perfection and it shows on their faces as they played.
One of Niel Youngs greatest songs. This performance is the best live cover of any song I have heard. The song fits Bryan voice amazingly well and the band and backing sings performed flawlessly. Love this track along with John Lennons Jealous Guy which is out of this world good.
First Roxy Music song I heard way back when I was 13-14. Couldn't get it out of my head. As much as I love Neil Young, there's just something about the instrumentation of this cover that pulls you in.
I was that same age. This song, the live EP and another live recording (King Biscuit Flour Hour?) turned me into an instant fan. I knew who they were but this made them a favorite band. Their breakup that year was devastating for me. I'm a big Neil fan but this song is owned by Roxy Music.
Saw them do this at Wembley in 82. Best concert ever. My mate went the next night and nearly 40 years later can still feel the pain I had that she was there and I wasn't!
I count myself as one of those young persons who is now a few years older, LOL! I remember a friend of mine playing this on his portable cassette player; “ghetto blaster”’ as they were called (probably can’t use that term anymore?) in the early eighties. It was the summer of 1983, a year after Avalon had been released and Roxy Music was all but done. Young people who lament contemporary music versus the music of the past (such as this) need not be disenchanted. Thanks to UA-cam, Sirius XM, iTunes, Spotify, etc., etc., there now exists a plethora of resources to both listen to, and watch, music performers from the past. In 1983 None of these mediums were even thought of. You had live albums to listen to, or you went to a concert to see your favourite artist live. Now you can listen to, or watch these stellar musical performances from yesteryear from a device held in the palm of your hand. So in that regard young music aficionados of the present are truly blessed.
Best recorded version of this song that I have seen. Great singing, fab sax from Andy, and Phil's guitar work was excellent. I wish I had seen them do this LIVE.....
This song used to play on the radio. When I was 16 I heard it in my $300 Chevy BelAir and it was one of the songs that inspired me to take up the drums. Never knew who the drummer was and I discovered another drumming idol in this time period. But I just cannot forget hearing this drum groove on the radio and wanting to play it as a teenager.
Saw this same tour when it came thru Chicago... Ferocious and beautiful... There is a 4 song live EP "The High Road" that is a must own. My copy destroyed many speakers way back when ...
I am more a Neil fan than a Roxy fan and I remember buying this EP back in the day, purely to hear this song. Still have it in the attic. This is the first time I have seen a video to go with the song. Excellent vibe.
OMG!!!!...Neil Hubbard looks so much like Neil Young in the same song from his Live Rust concert...one of my all time favourites.....as is Roxy Music Live in Frejus....amazing !!!!
I was there too and it was a fantastic memorable night in the open roman arena. King Crimson were playing support and all their fans tuned up too! it was a crush to get in so they just opened the gates to avoid disaster.
I know I know it's Neil Young's best song. Jeff Healy did it, and Brian Ferry beautiful interpretation with a great altsax.. But listen also to the original version by Neil Young! I love it all! I was in a hurricane on the S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam and I know the feeling!
Andy's perfect tenor tone and Phil's Strat tone ,o yeah and Bryan's tone. Saw them once, The High Road tour in Mesa,AZ 😮was an Amphitheater and fountains on both sides with coloured lights, looked and sounded Perfect😊
my absolute favorite version of this timeless classic, a regular on my playlist. I searched high and low to find the vinyl when it was released, and again digitally. The version that went on to the record is a better rendition..... just sayin......
Superb cover of a great song. Mind you, the whole Frejus concert is truly wonderful ... one of the first concerts I recorded on my first VHS back in the day ...
Roxy was always under rated. terrific live.

I wish I had a time machine to live that golden age again
Manazanara's 'Hurricane' guitar solo on The High Road album is one of the greatest things I have ever heard in my 60 years on this planet.
Very underated guitarist
Definitely not here. Neil Young blows him away!
Totally agree...watched this over and over spellbound
Yeah fabulous
Cop that Taylor Swift. Or Kanye whateverheis.
The only band to have captured the haunting beauty of Neil Young's original...equally good...in a different way.

Much better than young
I was there. King Crimson (the Fripp/Belew/Levin/Bruford line-up) opened. What a magical night!
My life would have been complete at that point.
The kids today have no idea… Roxy Music…. Changed my life, 60 yrs young and still listen often..

That "60 yrs young" is fantastic...like Roxy Music songs, of course.🥂🥂🥂
Bryan Ferry could take any song and make it his own. What a talent and the classiest looking dude ever. James Bond on the music world.
Best description of Brian Ferry....
Bryan Ferry could sing the phonebook and make it
sound great
Great comment
My feelings exactly.
My feelings exactly.
This is a Roxy Music song that Neil Young plays occasionally.
😆
Roxy Music covering Neil Young sounds like a terrible idea and yet it totally works. Fantastic version of a classic song.
Too bad we never got to hear Neil Young cover Roxy Music!

Incredible performance by the whole band .....there is no band out there today that Is as good ..... Viva Roxy
What a dreamy dreamy scene. Flowing skirts gorgeous men and music real music!
Tremendous version of Neil's classic, by Britain's best ever art rock band Phil manzanera is so under rated what a guitar player
Brilliant. Brian Ferry makes music an explosion of heart and mind.
What a drummer.........
Roxy Music changed my life too...Bryan Ferry is a sad, mad musical genious...❤
Brilliant....unreal...just brilliant
They should have closed with this number. Absolutely fantastic and a total effort by the band and singers. Perfection and it shows on their faces as they played.
Im a bit of a Neil Young purist but this is different and really good it shouldn't work but hell it really does.
yeah when I first heard it on the radio in 82 I said whose doing neil young better than neil?
That sax part is outstanding, Phil’s guitar too....

Andy Mackay. Great drummer.
