Big Or Small Hendrix Fuzz Face? [JHF1 & FFM3 - Effector Du Jour]

  • A Strat, a Marshall & two Fuzz Faces. Which one for you?
Welcome to the show and welcome to Effector Du Jour. Short videos, as to-the-point as That Pedal Show is ever likely to get.
Mick’s fave fuzz is the standard Dunlop JHF1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Distortion. It uses BC108 silicon transistors and cleans up just beautifully…
But there’s also the FFM3 Mini version that takes up waaaaay less pedalboard space AND can run off a 9V external supply. They're more or less the same price to buy. So what do we think?
    Enjoy!

For anyone that's not in love with the round shape, I have confirmed through some extensive dork-out sessions and internal inspection that the now discontinued Dunlop JHM1 and JHM5 have exactly the same circuit, just rehoused in the typical phase90 sized enclosure. Additionally, the MXR Classic 108 (M173) also has the same circuit, but with a switchable buffer. For anyone wanting this sound but in a mini rectangular enclosure, the MXR Classic 108 mini (M296), and the Dunlop Psychedelic and Shrine series (JHW1 and JHMS1) also use the same circuit. But beware, the mini versions use miniature surface mount resistors and capacitors and in my opinion, do NOT sound as open and organic as the larger versions that use full size resistors and capacitors. Please don't let this open a debate on the sonic quality of SM components versus full size because and as Mick mentioned, you could simply tweak the knobs slightly and get closer. All this said, unless you're one for nostalgia, there's really no reason to eat up 22 square inches of pedalboard space with a full size version when the smaller versions will get you there. Yes, you might give up a percent or two of sonic quality, but just remember, all of this obsessing we do goes right out the window once the bass player and drummer start in.

I agree with you! I would much rather have the smaller foot print these days than an original or a copy of the original. But I also don't mind going digital, except fuzz you can't replicate fuzz with anything digital.

That Shrine Series is excellent. Switchable buffer and switchable between germanium and silicon is the best of all worlds and I believe the most feature packed fuzz face.

I had the big classic 108 and replaced it with the big round jhf1 and I have to say I massively prefer the sound and lower noise of the big round thing. And it looks cool.

Your missing a big part of that big enclosure magic and sound by not going with full size enclosure. Those transistors really open up in that extra space and get some reverb going.

Mick, you asked feedback on the format in the VCQ. I’m a fan. It reminds me of a couple of short comparing videos you used to do with “vs” in the title (before YT started the shorts actually). I’ve watched all of those but who am I, I watch everything TPS. I must say that these video’s were sometimes on my path for a rewatch when I needed the information. So they are concise. It’s good that you don’t leave the judgement (end conclusion, final thoughts) entirely to the audience who is not in the room with you, but instead give us some thoughts as you do here briefly but clearly. If you like doing this format, great! Do what gives you energy and some revenue. We will follow.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  3 місяці тому +3

Thanks Tom. Ironically they may actually harm our revenue if the algorithm hates them. We'll see.
But we're totally over doing things for the algorithm - UA-cam doesn't pay much in any case, the majority of our revenue comes from our merch sales. That's what keeps the show afloat. I guess what we're after is just a way to attract more people to the fold and convince a few that staying for the long shows is where the value really is. Let's see! The danger is dumbing down to dumb questions. Hopefully we won't go there. Thanks for the feedback.

Great comparison Mick! There were times where I felt the two there sounded the same and 1 or 2 moments where I felt like the mini compressed more. I have had about 4 different FFM3s and they were all similar but a couple stood out as being special. I think its just a matter of finding the right one because so many component variables can make each identical pedal sound slightly different....and that right combination of different is magical.

Really enjoyed this format, not that I would want the long videos to go away but this is a nice change up. Speaking as an electrical engineer, every electrical component has a tolerance and because the fuzz face circuit is so simple the effect of this tolerances is magnified. Always try out a fuzz before you buy it. You could have 10 fuzzes with sequential serial numbers and they will all sound different because of slight variations in resistance capacitance and transistor gain.

Of course like most regular TPSers I prefer the long form format, tangents n’all. But totally get that these new shorts will help to get through the backlog of pedals.
I was very happy to see this comparison, as it’s been a question popping up for me. Seems like the mini pretty much held it’s own, which I like as I run a modest sized board and mini pedals help with the real estate 😊

  • @Asillyhobo

Love the new format. And if yall wanted to do a longer one, look into the MXR BC108 and Classic 108 fuzzes, and even deeper, the Dunlop JHW1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face. They all come with a buffer for playing with pedalboard placement before or after a wah, and the JHW1 if you can find it, comes with the option to switch between germanium and silicon transistors. All said, I love the mini series of Fuzz Faces, you can use the whole knob of volume or fuzz, so you can get all the normal sweet spots AND new ones!

I love my FFM3. When I first got it and experienced the variation available via the guitar's volume knob, I thought, 'Well, I don't actually need a lot of these other pedals - I'd be fine with just this.' I've still got all the other pedals because, well, they're still fun, but my first impression remains accurate; a good amp, a good guitar and one of these will take you a long way.

Years ago I purchased the Eric Johnson Fuzz Face, which is a very good one. A couple of years later I also got the small Hendrix Fuzz Face as well. They sound very similar! But the small one is much cheaper and much more pedalboard friendly. It has a 9V AC jack, LED and the cable jacks from right to left as all the other pedals out there. It cleans up very well by rolling back the volume on the guitar. So get the small Hendrix Fuzz Face. It's great!

Don‘t know if I‘m biased, because I owned one, but to me the FFM3 cleaned up just as nice but had a slightly more open (nicer) clean tone. Not only that, it had the more aggressive fuzz, when the volume is up.
I am still crying I sold the FFM3 - to be able to „upgrade to a „boutique“ Greuter Monlight. Very nice sound but nothing cleans up like the FFM3 (Si 108).

You guys must have read my mind. I'm thinking of getting one of these because I've been so impressed with Mick's tones from his large blue Hendrix Dunlop Fuzzface.
I have an MXR Classic 108 and while it's great for running a wah or Univibe in front due to the inbuilt buffer, my 108 does this nasty high pitched whine when cranked, buffer/no buffer, wah or vibe in front or nothing between the guitar and the MXR - crank that Fuzz and *wheeeeeeeeee*
I've tried batteries, super clean power supply, different guitars and leads/patch cables - nothing works.
So, need a new Classic Fuzz!!

He Mick! Awesome addition to the longer format stuff. Love the "newish" camera angles as well. Makes me feel involved and fits the format. Wouldnt wanna miss the longer videos for the world, but quite alot of questions can get answered like this pretty quickly. For example. How do 2 Pro Juniors sound in W/D?! Or should I get a Blackstar St James or a Marshall JTM Studio 20?! Jokes aside, I love it!

    Nice sounds!
I just wish you'd run the amp through that Fryette ka-thingy in the back there so you could push the amp harder, since that's what Jimi did onstage. The Fuzz sounds so much better when being fed to an already distorted Plexi 😄, and it cleans up better since you wouldn't have the fuzz control on "10" in such a situation.
    Happy new year!

Watch our longer fuzz videos. That happens. No Fryette!

I do prefer longer videos. But I do like the short videos that just compare a few pedals. More TPS is better. Keep it up.

Effector Du Jour. I want that on a t-shirt! It made me laugh so hard. C'est un immense plaisir de t'entendre jouer Mick Du Jour.

My guess would be the smaller bugger has slightly higher gain transistors (same type). Arguable about the LED. I have both as well and other than pot tolerance/taper slight variations it's all about the transistors. The lower gain the better in the JHF-1 I find. Tried 5 large ones before I picked one and after measuring that was the case.

Awesome and timely. Last month I bought a Sun Face and Beano Boost (Delay Lllama Xtreme; Cali76 Stacked; Timmy V3; Radial ABY; Custom '68 DRRI; definitely watching too much of this show) and have just put those two on my big board so I was wondering what I would pull out of the collection for the small board to get into somewhat of the same territory. This just convinced me to give the Hendrix mini a try just down the chain from an Arcane germanium treble booster, both of which have had little love since purchase. Feels like you turned me into my own Op Shop in 5 mins. Thanks again. Let me know if you want my bank passwords, we can just cut out the middle man.

This also helps me feel better about the mini blue FuzzFace I bought. And reminds me to pick up the strat.

I love it when you geek out on Fuzz-Faces, Mick. Do you notice a difference in feel/response with the vintage spec pickups? Sounds ace!

Yep, absolutely. And pot tapers, big time. Once the pickups start getting very powerful it all goes to pot, ahem.

Mini pedals are the way to go. It sounds ‘close enough’ and isn’t as heavy to carry around. 👍

Not sure if the small has trim pots inside, but once I adjusted the trim pots on the big one it became my absolute favorite, and I have (had) many of the so called best out there except the new faceless fuzz. Anyway, it’s a thing of beauty the big one…

I love this shorter firmat and a great demo! I'm confused by all thew Dunlop fuzz faces. I understand the germanium vs silicon, but there are so many models. : MXR 108 small and big, Hendrix signature normal size pedal, the real fuzzfaces small and big. Ofcourse there are always differences even within the same family, but which one to get?
