I saw Jimi for the firs time in 1968 at the Grande Ballroom. I was standing right at the stage. Jimi had 4 -100 watt Marshalls and a Strat and a wah wah with fuzz period!! Went on to see him 3 times after this. Good old 60's!!!

Hendrix was really the first true electric guitar player in that he didn't shy from any of the idiosyncratic and novel sounds you could achieve with the instrument. He embraced it all but most importantly mastered these new sounds in a way no one really had. I think that's a big reason he stood out and informed so many players after. Players were doing unique stuff for sure but he played effects and loud amps as instruments in themselves

Awesome video, and great to see everybody's setup. I've been doing wah-vibe-fuzz, as a tip from Nic at Sabbadius. The preamp in his vibe fixes any weird interaction between my wah and fuzz. But now I'm gonna try fuzz first.

had been listening to Hendrix as background music as a kid, but realized how great he was as an adult, he would still blow everyone away if he were alive today,
elevator music would be considered rock music if he had not come along, he probably knew he was the best guitar player in the world, but refused to admit it,
probably the reason he wanted to meet Clapton and Beck was because no one had heard of him and they were the top guitar players back then,
if anyone listens to his interviews and documentaries he burned himself out literally, what he did can be copied, but can't copy his mind, congratulations great analogy.

I'm for the first time in my life starting to play in a band and i'm putting my 'low' budget Fulltone Hendrix rig together. So fari i've got my vintage strat, a mk1 69, a Fulltone Clyde standard and a fender blues junior. Getting there, slowly but surely. Stil really want the univibe/octavia/silicon fuzz pedals, and a delay to finish it off. Grtz from 1 of the biggest JH fans out there!

  • @johnmartin5153

Try doing a set up just like jimi ( wah- fuzz face- octavia- vibe) and after the vibe put a EHX LPB-1 to drive it and add a little ( air) feeling It kinda gives the feel of a opened up high wattage amp. I do this on a Marshall dsl 20 on the clean channel. With this dual rectifier amp its hard to push it like jimi that’s why the lpb 1. If I’m in high gain band of Gypsies territory I sometimes will switch over to the gain channel set to a low crunch and that will take care of the univibe starting to sound swishy and crappy when there’s too much fuzz infront of it. Instead of switching the pedals around I always tried to replicate the air jimi was moving with those 100 watt heads. I think that is the true challenge we’re all facing with this.
Keep more vids like this coming!!!👍🏻

@@dreyn7780 so you somehow think you “need” jh branded or Dunlop branded gear to achieve Hendrix tones? What do you think he played in the 60’s before Dunlop existed? Yikes. You are severely misinformed, bub. Hendrix played Dallas Arbiter fuzz faces (silicon later) Vox wah’s, an Octavio style pedal, and a Univibe . So, again, Nik nails all of these things here, using real vintage gear and amazing playing. You commented on a year old post, attempting to discredit a dude who’s done a lot to educate and inform people about vintage gear and playing styles.Where is your “credible” video regarding Hendrix tone, or anything else other than video games? 🤦‍♂️

That was his setup. When he used an Octavia, it would come after the Fuzz Face.
I really think Roger Mayer was either putting buffers in some of the Wahs or Fuzzes, or he was changing the input impedance, as I’ve been told that can help with the Wah problem.

    • @RafaelRechia
      @RafaelRechia 4 роки тому +2

@@CorbCorbin Here my setup is: Guitar > Fuzz Face Nkt 275 > Fulltone Ultimate Octave > Colorsound 70's (Exactly the same Clyde McCoy's circuit) > Uni-vibe clone like Nik's signal chain. Looks like hes got the guitar cable round the back of the other pedals and into the wah first then fuzz then univibe. So he didn't have a load of loose cable hanging about. Makes the signal look backwards almost but I think its still wah fuzz then vibe how he always had it for example woodstock

One thing that inspires me is getting those effects and sounds from the albums that Jimi didn’t have the tech to recreate live yet.
I’m sure he’d have had an Echorec or Echoplex going into 71’, and then phasers and flange weren’t far behind. Also, live setups in general became better in the 70s, which was something Jimi was always having trouble with.
Gilmour had a very similar setup to Hendrix’s by 71’, a Bc109 Si Fuzz Face, and he had the Wah first as well, with a Univibe by 72’, and then an Echorec or two. The big difference was the amp, where Jimi was getting that cranked Marshall sound as a base, Gilmour used super clean high headroom Hiwatts.
      I either use a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe or Vox 186 Wah>BC109 Fuzz Face>Black Arts Toneworks Pharoah>Catalinbread DLS>Uni Vibe>Blackout Effectors Sibling Optical Phaser>Kilobyte Delay>Boss DD3
Another killer Fuzz Face is the Deep Trip BOG, which is a Silicon circuit, but the impedance is set to handle Wahs and it has Bass and Treble pots, as well as Bias control, which can get you closer to that Germanium tone or the highest gain Silicon. I’ve collected and went through numerous Uni Vibes and Fuzz Faces, and I always seem to go back to the BC109, because it cleans up so well. I like the Dirty Little Secret always on, because I can get a Marshall Crunch with just about any amp, which the Fuzz Face just loves.

Super cool man! If you are ever in the Houston area I’ll have to have you play my ‘68 maple cap Olympic White strat. It has had a complete refret in the 80s and lots of crowning and leveling over the years, but I used the same style small frets as what was originally on the guitar. I’m considering refretting with big frets...it certainly seems to make it easier. I feel like Hendrix may have struggled a bit with bending when he used the CBS era strats versus when he used the pre-CBS guitars...maybe that’s just me?
This has been super helpful for me with pedal order. I always ran my old Univibe, Crest Fuzz and Vox wah in the Hendrix order (and recently my Stu Castledine cheese wedge Octavia), but I was never satisfied with that sound. I have to remember that I play through my ‘65 Super Reverb and not a full Marshall stack on 11 (!) and I think your advice has really made quite a difference!

Excellent educational vid on Hendrix pedal tones. He is a great example of it's not just great guitar playing. But also knowing and understanding how those pedals come together to make that amazing tone. Those built in pre's and the non true bypass wah really helps or hinders the tone. Overall you have to mess with every part of the rig and experiment. Dial the amp tones. Perhaps turn up the treble to make up for the wah dulling of the chain. Your instrument cables also will effect your tone. And that is another way to tweak it. And the guitar volume is key for clean, dirty rhythm, and soaring lead. Thanks for these tips. And as always some amazing guitar playing! You really capture Hendrix's feel, style and vibe. 👍🏻

Fuzz is such a universe. The vintage style germanium transistors are still my favorite stuff. They do not make Germanium transistors anymore. A pair, hand picked for a Fuzz Face is 20 duckets these days and the stock is dwindling. Hendix actually preferred the silicon transistor variety. Likely because the germanium ones sputtered on a hot day but sounded golden on a cool day or the studio.

@@theriffwniksevigny5473 I grew up listening to Jimi on Vinyl. The one thing I learned was to never be predictable. BTW- your nailing the old tones pretty damn good. Great tone! - These days I have a HUGE pedal board. But still use a Dejavibe and a Silicon fuzz! I'm a reverbdelay junkie.

I was lucky enough last year to see the completed film of Jimi playing Royal Albert Hall in 1969.( I also went to gig!)
The numerous close ups are superb and reveal his technique like no other film. What struck me is that at the heart of Jimi’s sound was a beautiful Strat plugged into overdriven Marshall Amps. It’s that simple.
Also don’t forget his long powerful fingers that helped him wring every last drop out of each note.
The effects : the fuzz, and wah, added extra colour to the sound but I’m afraid towards the end of his life they started to take over.

Please send my apologies to Zapata. There was a Unique Vibe on Reverb last year that was just about to be boxed up and sent to him on tour. Guy selling it was local to me and I ended up getting it in a cash parking lot deal. Felt bad but happy to see he got one in the end!

You can get the jimmie sound at home ,, you need ten champ amps ,daisy chained together, cranked to ten, a good fuzz, a echo type effect for that leslie sound ,, maybe a phaser and a dallas range masterand a wah. A little reverb, that all that was available back in the day. Look to what Trower was using. He carried on with the Jimmie thing. The univibe is hard to come by, but other things will get you close.

Awesome vid and tones man. The only thing I'll say is that in my experience going the the route of using a 'fuzz friendly buffer' in your otherwise true bypass wah that is only on when the wah is engaged is more effective than putting the wah after... You can get some cool clean wah tones with the fuzz on and gtr vol rolled back by doing it your way but The full on fuzz with wah gets reall screechy and gross. If the wah is first with a buffer this works out much better. Keep the cool vids comin bro!

Preference. Its fun either way. Thanks for checking the video out and the feedback, i do appreciate it!

I agree with the "output buffer wah before fuzz" route but it's completely up to taste, different flavours, I also think Jimi was always experimenting so he probably went back and forth! You're so lucky to have such friends Nik! Thanks for the content man

Doing a little research Jimi used a lot of R Mayer modded fuzz that were housed in FF housings cause he had so many enclosures So there is some crazy stuff going on in those FFs towards the end My favorite lead tones are from his later stuff which might even be Muff fuzz w FF Good demo I think the vintage or authentic pedals get you closer definitely Maybe just me but most of the new stuff just doesn't do it for me Depends on the amps sometimes too
