You may hear a friendly piper, or a fiddler sounding merry, but most often times you're hearing centuries of anguish and unhappiness shadowed by a desolate and foggy ambiance. My ancestors were murdered for there pegan believes, forced to accept a foreign God, forced to forget their ancestors, the brave forced to fight , the weak forced to run or bow for hundreds of years until they drudged though famine, and constant neighboring assault, and forced servitude. All of these things led to the instability of the true Celt people, and are overlooked and underappreciated in our current world. This is a shame, and I hope someone looking for clarity stumbles apon these words. May you find solice in 🇮🇪

very well said, but the hell our ancestors have been through is also a source of great inspiration and energy. Hatred and anger over our fate is a powerful motivator! Whenever I feel bitter about events in my life, I remind myself of the undiluted misery our people have been through; we are made of iron, if we were not, we would not have survived the nightmare that is our history. The Irish now, and forever!
I have sung this song in folk clubs since 1967, still singing it at 74.
