"Some guys they just give up living and start dying little by little piece by piece" wow what a devastating line but the alternative is the thrill of an engine and feeling alive for those brief moments. Springsteen can paint a picture like few others. The highway is a supreme metaphor
The last 5 minutes of the song (5:00 - 9:41) is perhaps the greatest music I've ever heard. It's comforting to know that whenever I struggle in life, I can go back to this song and find courage again.
Here I sit drowning in the fear of the Covid 19 pandemic. Outside and on my TV screen images of protest, of violence, of peace, of hope, of a brave new generation play over and over. I lost my 33 year old son, David Silver, in 2007 and have been raising his then 3 year old orphan son ever since. I am 71 now and David's son, Aaron is almost 16. It's been years since I allowed myself to listen to these heart-wrenching songs Bruce tore from his soul. I am old enough now to actually KNOW I am mortal and my time will be coming. As much as I long to see David on the other side, I long even more to have every single second I may be granted by God to love and comfort my son's son, Aaron. Even though it is not in my power to decide when I will have to go, I can't keep the tears from filling my eyes whenever I look at Aaron, knowing I can't be here for him forever like he thinks I will be. There is only one Bruce and the emotion I know he tears from the depths of my soul actually scares me. That is why I stopped listening to these incomparable pieces of musical genius several years ago. I can't believe some of the comments on this thread are from a mere week ago. We all will pass on, like poor George Floyd, but even when Bruce's time comes, NOBODY and NOTHING will ever erase the sweet power of his genius.
Ronald you have done a great thing with your life. David would be so proud of everything you have done. The true definition of a man is how you raise a son and you have raised two. Gods speed x
Well done and well said, I don't think the world will realise the genius Bruce is until he is gone. I have always said he is a modern day Shakespeare, his lyrics are awesome.
I’m out here in my garage working on my 57 Chevy pick up. 454 with an MB 35 five speed This song gives me inspiration Going for the gasser look. my 22-year-old daughter was murdered 11 years ago. I wish she was here to help me.
1973 This song takes me back to a Saturday night in a small town in the Midwest. My hometown. Hot and humid, after dark on the north side of town between the railroad tracks and the cemetery a mile north of town. John Haley with his 302 69 Camaro and Ronald Bakko and his 66 Chevelle SS396. They raced several times, the sound of those 2 cars in the distance... I listen to Bruce do this song and I'm right there again. Even met "the girl" that evening, Roxanne with her beautiful long red hair. True to the song, I drove that girl away. I was 17 then, 63 now, life has been good, Bruce's music just gets better with age!
And these too…such brilliant songs and performances. Bruce is just amazing! ua-cam.com/video/r1twvwbB_cU/v-deo.htmlsi=zeSdUJKuA0mhNUeV ua-cam.com/video/r8qpTL1wxGQ/v-deo.htmlsi=DNy-KiRhPrM9Vf3i
From freehold to asbury to seaside we grew up racing in the streets. It was the 70’s in Jersey. Now almost 70 we’re still racing in the streets, on i-4 and 75 in Florida. What a life!!!
Im from S Jersey, but had friends from Freehold who went to Montclair State who told some stories of those races.. Yep, 70 and still jamming with ESt / Bruce, only in Boulder now . Amazing song .
the instrumental part of this version has been playing in my head for the last week. i hope it stays and becomes the soundtrack for what remains of my life. it's beyond good.
Stands with "Thunder Road" and "Darkness On the Edge of Town" as Springsteen's best songs. As beloved as he is Bruce will always have detractors because he has never shied away from writing about despair in a society that tends to deny it.
Never owned a 69 chevy, nor a camaro, but this is still the best song by Springsteen. The cars are kind of metaphors that help me connect to other things that are important to me. To me it tells "you will die one day, so do your best to live every day in your life"
So well said. To many years ago but. But this song at 18-19 was a pledge to one another it's not us. You know great families they have but never deny we are not that guy we thought we had to be.
I can't help but feel grateful for the timeless masterpiece that is Bruce Springsteen's "Racing in the Streets." This song, with its haunting melody and poignant lyrics, has touched the hearts of generations of music lovers. The way Springsteen captures the longing for a life beyond the mundane, the desire for escape and the hope for something better is truly remarkable. His ability to weave together themes of love, loss, and the human spirit is a testament to his artistic brilliance. I am grateful for the countless hours of joy that "Racing in the Streets" has brought me and for the way it has touched the lives of so many. This Thanksgiving, Thank you, Bruce Springsteen and his enduring legacy of music that continues to inspire and uplift us all. The jamming part with piano and rock music is awesome. However I must admit one more Bruce’s masterpiece’The River’ which always drive me in perusing my life.
This performance simply blows my mind. The song is obviously legendary and one of the most powerful of Springsteen gems. The performance is so intense, it bends gravity. The band starts off cool - almost restrained - and then, the pressure builds up towards the end like a boiler on the brink of explosion. Springsteens voice is gritty like a bag of rusty nails. Your eardrums are scratched and your heart pierced. The band roars underneath the surface like a wild animal dying to be let loose. One of my all time favourite performances.
I am a 63yo female who grew up with Bruce. This song tears at me. I'm at a crossroad in my life and trying to find reasons to keep on keeping on. I feel lost and broken inside. The part where he speaks of some guys just give up living, and die a little by little, or something like that, it's not verbatim but tell me what does it mean at our age to keep racing in the streets? I'm looking for answers because I need a reason.

This was my late wife's favorite song. It was always are go to. Seen it done live a numerous times but this one brings tears to my eyes. May all that have gone before us rest in peace. Thank you Bruce for the wonderful memories

She was exceptional. Bruce has a way of bringing people together. That is why my best friend of 40 years is still in my life. And yes I also believe she will be waiting for me with arms wide open when it's my time.

I’m gonna go a little bit out on a limb here(or maybe not at all), and say without doubt... “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” is the greatest album ever made!!!!! Especially, if you work for a living, it still reigns true 40 years later!! Amazing!!!
It's an amazing album...I've just listened to it again from start to finish. Amazing album. Dunno about the best album ever but it's definitely my favourite Springsteen album. It's real, it's gritty and it's unbelievably brilliant musically!
Yeah and the dirt track sub-culture is still out there too, although I don't know if it's still going up in Jersey, but it sure as hell is in the South. Guys who pour all their extra money into a car and race it
He must be so proud, surely, not ‘ only ‘ to written and sung one of very best songs ever taped or performed, but, to be graced with such a blast furnace of a band,..overflowing with a jaw dropping ability to construct more intensity than you shall EVER hear elsewhere.
Having seen this man and his band so many times, this version of Racing In the Street is spectacular. Bruce is the voice of a generation. I’m so grateful that he is the lyricist for my lifetime.
Starting at five minutes you see what I believe to be a deep appreciation for the talent of this band in his eyes. No lyrics, just everyone playing their part! He mouths something at 6 minutes, I like to think that he says, what a band!
A Springsteen song is like watching a movie. I would have loved to write and direct this one. I see a young Matt Damon and Ben affleck in this one. Love it.
If he does tour , just the boys. Leave Nils home too. A stripped down band, lean and mean like in 1975. I love Nils , but when Steve and Bruce trade notes back and fourth, thats E Street magic.
Such a beautiful song. How can I thank you for giving me songs to grow up and old to? I have ALS and I just sit and listen to these every night and remember better days, like when I first heard this. Thank you
How amazingly he writes our lives down in poetic Justice. He is undoubtedly one of the supreme songwriters of our time and I hope he continues to write for the people.
I think it's his best song. I've decided. It's so unbelievably soul crushing and uplifting simultaneously. I don't really cry as a rule but this just breaks through all my last facades :)
383sle Although not as good lyrically You're Missing off the Rising is a very emotional song too. It's the poetry of this song that makes the emotional music carry such power.
Yep. Absolutely agree, Sam. The album version, which starts so simply but just keeps building complexity, still makes me appreciate being human. The song is so fucking sad but I can't help but feeling lifted up when I hear it.
I agree. Except... the problem I have is I feel exactly the same way - that I've just heard his greatest song, and the greatest at least since the invention of amplification - after about 20 of Bruce's. Incident on 57th Street, For You (Hammersmith Odeon), Backstreets (1977-78 with the Sad Eyes, Drive All Night, You Lied interlude), The Price You Pay, Wreck on the Highway, Jungleland, She's the One (with the 1978 Buddy Holly, Not Fade Away intro), Girls in their Summer Clothes, American Skin (41 shots), Land of Hope & Dreams - throw a dart. Speaking of throwing a dart, the mystery to me is how someone ends up Bruce Springsteen, and everyone else? Not.
I fell the same way about LYNYRD Skynyrd , but I can't pick just 1 out. But this is a great song and version of it is I don't but this is the 1 I listen to.
oh that's already 9 years ago? Time's running so fast, such a beautiful beautiful version of this great song. The Outro is probably the most beautiful thing this world has ever seen.
The outro makes me tear up. I want this version played at my funeral. The closing song of my exodus. They can all sit and listen to perfection and I will look down smiling. And probably crying.
still cant believe i heard this version live 5.7.2016 in milano and it wasnt even my favourite springsteen concert... this piano solo is the best thing ever!
"For all the shut down strangers and hot rod angels Rumbling through this promised land Tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the sea And wash these sins off our hands" Just love these lines :-)
Ron - I am so sorry for your loss. Life goes on and “life on life’s terms” as it goes. You are stepping up to the biggest challenge of your life….and you are meeting the challenge. I have tremendous respect for you. I too take a lot from Bruce words and I wish you the best.
Grazie Grazie Grazie
We have be blessed with so many classics from Bruce it could actually dilute his genius! However such is the brilliance of the man, his abity of storytelling filled with lyrical diamonds nobody can or should underestimate his legacy. This man's music along with the fantastic E Strret Band has accompanied me through some of life's highs and lows. A perfect friend for the journey through life. Racing in the Street reminds me of endless summer nights as a teenager. One of the classics. It is a sad but certain fact of life that we all pass on and I will miss and mourn Bruce like a family member should that sad day come before my time! Thank you Bruce, thank you for being there and guiding us through our personal journeys in this life. ❤
Fantastic musicians all of them. Drummer, Pianist, Saxophone and Guitarists. Led by the totally brilliant Bruce Springsteen. Top man. Seriously brilliant.
Listened to it since I'm 13. Lying in bed, not wanting to hear my parents arguing. Didn t unterstand the words, but I found comfort. 35 years later, still gives me chills, tears and hope. what a masterpiece
This song reminds me of my own racing in the streets before they put roundabout everywhere..a shoutout to Bundaberg old days of dragging up the main street.. like 40 year ago
If there is anything better than this , Please let me know . Bruce goes from talking about automobiles to the wreckage of a relationship . The E Street Band go along for the ride .
Epic in its significance and scale. The last of the lengthy, soulful early Bruce songs and the soon-to-be slick, more commercial material. I love the way "Mighty" Max Weinberg builds this to a fever pitch.
For anyone who isn't a Springsteen fan I would encourage to listen again...any parent taking their kid to a concert thank you for keeping great music alive god bless
There are many great versions of this incredible song. IMO, of those I've heard, live, and on boots, this is my favorite. Roy's brilliant piano is present, but it doesn't dominate the rest of the band. We can hear every instrument, but especially Bruce's gorgeous playing. Racing in the Street is a classic example of the Whole being more - much, much, more - than the Sum of the parts. The song is so stunningly beautiful I can't help but feel lucky to be alive in a world that contains such magnificent art - and thankful that, for whatever unknown reason, to be able to appreciate the genius of Bruce Springsteen.
Bruce, this song means so much to me. It gave me energy to continue high school until graduation, it gave me peace in my mind, it gave me relaxed moments to cry in my bed, moments of reflection, moments of joy and happiness. Thank you, thank you for all your music and a huge congratulations on this album turning 40 years. Keep racing in the street!
All the heartache that went into Darkness on the Edge or Town produced probably the best stand alone album of the 70’s and the 80’s. Factory live in BIrmingham 1982 was a high point. Clarence and Max were awesome.
"I blew that Camaro of my back and I drove that little girl away...." One of the finest images in rock history! And Joey is right... the outro of this song was always the strongest part!
This Song is like a medicine for me. It gives me the strength for keepin' on every single day... when life is getting darker, this Song is the torchlight on my way out. Thank you Bruce!
If Bruce and the band walked on stage, played this for 3.5 hours and walked off I wouldn't complain.
She stares off alone into the night
With the eyes of one who hates for just being born
these lyrics leave me speechless
Possibly the greatest lyrics ever written…..like so many others by the poet of a generation…
You have good taste
Wow what a line
that is what you call a fucking spiritual moment in time
Max is a machine
"She sits on the porch of her daddy's house and all her pretty dreams are torn. She stares off alone into the night with the eyes of one who hates for just being born.".......Gets me every time.
Only the greatest songwriter of all time can come up with those words!
I just wish this song would never end.

Wow. Thank you. My first Springsteen Album `Darkness' this remains ny favourite song 50 years later.
A stunning song that has lost none of its majesty over the years, instead it has grown in its power.
agree
Absolutely, this version has more depth than any other, fantastic.
More poignant now that the Boss is no longer young himself.
Agreed. Nuff said.
Pure.poetry . Passion on the edge of Town.
The best of Bruce I took this song every day of my life it made a man of me
He must be so proud, surely, not ‘ only ‘ to written and sung one of very best songs ever taped or performed, but, to be graced with such a blast furnace of a band,..overflowing with a jaw dropping ability to construct more intensity than you shall EVER hear elsewhere.
Fantastic post Matthew.
Blast Furnace indeed. Little Stevie Van Zant, Max Weinberg.
Anyone after 50+ yrs loving this guy?
Me 😍 even though i‘m 30+ yrs
Almost all of us
60...yes❤
64 and he takes me back decades. A genius for our time.
58... Since I was 22
Having seen this man and his band so many times, this version of Racing In the Street is spectacular. Bruce is the voice of a generation. I’m so grateful that he is the lyricist for my lifetime.
Exactly. This is my truth.
Could he be any more amazing? You hear the emotion in his voice. True genius. No one can compare.
Love it.
The bass, the drums, the piano, the guitar , the sax and the Boss, that’s all folks, nothing else matter🎸🎸
The last three minutes of this might be the best three minutes in the history of music
matthew rubock probably the best comment on UA-cam that mate 👍
Touches the Soul.
I think the world needs to be blessed with another E Street Band tour?
Shelly TV Clarence 💜
If he does tour , just the boys. Leave Nils home too. A stripped down band, lean and mean like in 1975. I love Nils , but when Steve and Bruce trade notes back and fourth, thats E Street magic.
Agreed 100%
U GOT THAT RIGHT, SHELLY !!!
Yessssssssss!
That jam out never gonna end - glorious!
My thoughts EXACTLY !
Such a beautiful song. How can I thank you for giving me songs to grow up and old to? I have ALS and I just sit and listen to these every night and remember better days, like when I first heard this. Thank you
One of the greatest songs ever written!
Bruce's mystery ride on the rollercoaster of life, love, and loss. I still get chills ! RIP # 🎷 Clarence
@@brianwade1819 I agree
As I am reading Bruce's amazing book, the chills do not stop. What a treasure this man is for all of us. There will never be another Bruce.
Never. Ever
There's everyone then there's the Boss!!!!
And he always has been a treasure.
Sadly, you're probably right. It'll be a hundred years, if ever.
God speaks through Bruce. Bruce is enough of a good man to listen, and write it using his God given talent.
" one who hates for just being born" My God, that describes deep depression and grief better than anything I've ever heard.
How amazingly he writes our lives down in poetic Justice. He is undoubtedly one of the supreme songwriters of our time and I hope he continues to write for the people.
The boss because he put together the best band in the world
I think it's his best song. I've decided. It's so unbelievably soul crushing and uplifting simultaneously. I don't really cry as a rule but this just breaks through all my last facades :)
Samuel Evans
I would have to say I'm with on this.
Such a moving piece of music
383sle Although not as good lyrically You're Missing off the Rising is a very emotional song too. It's the poetry of this song that makes the emotional music carry such power.
Very true.
The extended version of this song is so much more powerful and moving than the original.
I can't stop listening to it.
Not.
Bruce has a big catalogue and this is #1 for me. So much love for the music and lyrics. Complete theatre.
That's an opera and a mass, sunday church service combined in one holy piece of music. Only The Boss can do it that way. (from Germany)
God bless you Bruce! You and the E Street Band... Great like no one else!!!
I watch this every few days. An absolutely amazing performance!
I fell the same way about LYNYRD Skynyrd , but I can't pick just 1 out.
But this is a great song and version of it is I don't but this is the 1 I listen to.
@@robertgodby4925 il finale è un capolavoro! 🥰😍😘💘💕
it doesn't matter where o when Bruce plays, he's an absolutely genius. One of the best, if not the best, single songwritter of our time.
AGREE
Il finale inesorabile....💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
This piece has such a strong, strong sense of place and time. Bruce Springsteen and his band are incomparable.
oh that's already 9 years ago? Time's running so fast, such a beautiful beautiful version of this great song. The Outro is probably the most beautiful thing this world has ever seen.
Severin Gomboc Guitar I agree just love the outro
my favourite Outro of any song I think. 2nd is "On every Street" by Dire Straits I think.
The outro makes me tear up. I want this version played at my funeral. The closing song of my exodus.
They can all sit and listen to perfection and I will look down smiling. And probably crying.
absolutely. I thought about my funeral too. This song or 'Going Home' from Mark Knopfler. But Racing in the streets is such a beauty.
still cant believe i heard this version live 5.7.2016 in milano and it wasnt even my favourite springsteen concert... this piano solo is the best thing ever!
"For all the shut down strangers and hot rod angels
Rumbling through this promised land
Tonight my baby and me we're gonna ride to the sea
And wash these sins off our hands"
Just love these lines :-)
Ron - I am so sorry for your loss. Life goes on and “life on life’s terms” as it goes. You are stepping up to the biggest challenge of your life….and you are meeting the challenge. I have tremendous respect for you. I too take a lot from Bruce words and I wish you the best.
Grazie Grazie Grazie
Concordo in pieno, Carla..
It was his best song . What beautiful tribute to an amazing man. Long live Clarence!
The greatest Song for all time...thank you BOSS..
Fantastic musicians all of them. Drummer, Pianist, Saxophone and Guitarists. Led by the totally brilliant Bruce Springsteen. Top man. Seriously brilliant.
I love it when a song transcends music and takes on it's own life and yours and mine and rolls on and on....
one of the greatest song i'v heard. This version is simply amazing. the notes from his telecaster are lethal. all musicians are at their best
Incident on 57th Street, live in Barcelona
Jungleland 1975 Hammersmith Odeon .
Drive All Night

The "Professor" shows his mastery 🎹
by far the absolute best song ever written and performed by real musicians
Agreed
Absolute masterpiece
True word's right there
Fucking great bunch of musicians.
Joey Colombi- me too man, going through a tough time in my life right now but the last 5 mins of this song gives me courage- God bless
9:41 - pure goose bumps. Best version of his greatest song ever.
When it's time to assemble the time capsule showing the best of humankind and send it to outer space, this video has to be part of the package.
More than 10 years old, and we are still coming here to watch this video...
Just discovered this song, so glad I did, it’s only taken me 68 years 😢
This song is unbelievable
I wish the Big Man Clarence Clemens was still with us.
John Bowerman I miss The Big Man too
DON'T WE ALL, BUT JAKE, HIS NEPHEW IS DOIN' A GREAT JOB FILLIN' IN FER UNC !!!
Every time the camera shot comes to the Big Man, I get tears in my eyes.... even tho' Jake is doing such a great job too!
His is John !
@@johnnyraiderallison906 It's his nephew ? I stand happily corrected Johnny !
One of the best codas in music, following one of the best stories in music. This is the Boss, and the band, at their greatest.
Keep racing in the street!
you get me!!!! i feel exactly the way you do, this man has saved me so many times!
Santosh Kuppens A treasure trove of the best music and lyrics... bless you Bruce
All the heartache that went into Darkness on the Edge or Town produced probably the best stand alone album of the 70’s and the 80’s. Factory live in BIrmingham 1982 was a high point. Clarence and Max were awesome.
Amen, brother !
Good luck men, I know this...
Out of this world. Legendary and just mindblowing...this song and the way it is performed goes into eternity.
"I blew that Camaro of my back and I drove that little girl away...." One of the finest images in rock history! And Joey is right... the outro of this song was always the strongest part!
Racing in the street, thunder road, darkness on the edge of town, the river..... genius you are Bruce
Bruce, no one else can do this as good as you... love it !!!!!
a work of art
This Song is like a medicine for me. It gives me the strength for keepin' on every single day... when life is getting darker, this Song is the torchlight on my way out. Thank you Bruce!
Only BRUCE 'THE BOSS' SPRINGSTEEN can make a song sound this good
This is one of many songs, of this man's, which I can't leave until the last note is played...
