Ooo I always wanted to try the 800mm, but never got the chance! - the 600mm is a very special lens and even though it's a prime and 600mm it's incredibly versatile for highly detailed shots, as well as far reaching views etc
I still own this beast of a lens and use it on my D5 and occasionally on my D850. I use it for birding after I stopped with sports photography (soccer), I don't think I'll sell this lens. Thank you for sharing this video.
No worries, glad your still enjoying your lens. Unfortunately, mine doe st get to see the light of day often due to switching over to the Leica M system. But it's a cracking lens !!
The lens made its money back over time with the images I sold shot from it - I later sold it for a fraction of what it cost me new (5k less) but it's gone to a good home
Just bought one of these in 2024. The planned obsolescence and creation of the Z platform have caused people like me to be able to get a 600 f4 G for a price that we would have never been able to dream of. The Z and the DSLRs take almost similar quality pics. People are paying too much for the Z and all the gadgets. Pro equipment is becoming affordable for amateurs as a result of the need for Nikon to keep pushing tech evolution.
This is very true... Since th Z system all the amazing F-mount lenses out there have plumited in price. Which is great for buyers, but awful for those wanting to sell.
I thought it was equally interesting that you used a D800 over a D3/D4. You must have gotten some questions about that, I'm sure. I don't know why anyone would criticize the lens. Most photographers would just assume that you would have one, given what you shoot. It's just logical!
It was a world full of 400mm lenses, and I had the biggest lol... I chose the D800 over the D4 at the time due to the higher megapixels, which clients and advertising loved, so I suck with it!
Don't be shy, it's fine haha. Now I use a lot of Leica gear I can appreciate the compactness of MFT and their lenses... The weight of this lens strapped to a D800 on a monopod, changing horses around... Wasn't a fun experience haha
Lovely lens. Are you doing the review on the 200 f/2?
Thanks for the comment, a review for the 200 f/2 is recorded. I've just got to edit it and then it'll be on the channel
Hi,great video, what is that thing on the front suncap?
HIm thanks for the comment it is actually a GOPro mount. I did a bit of filming my "day to Day" as a sports photographer back in the day with it
Nice review! I'd love to see some of the shots taken with this on the F5 - that sounds like an amazing combination.
Thanks for the comment, I was think of tanking that combo out in a dedicated video, so watch this space!!
i had this lens but sold in 2021. now i have the 800 5.6E FL. i love them both!

Hi , like to know what size UV filter can go over the front element please 🙏
There are no filter threads to put filters on the front unfortunately. But I believe the internal drop out filter is a 52mm
@@SebastianOakley thank you , great review for the lens . I have ordered one from Clifton camera now really excited to have it on d850
Hi, how does it perform with the D850??? (Shooting wildlife inflight) thank you, John
my favorite lens for tracks & fields
its an awesome lens, and when used for the right things it can really procude exceellent results!
Love the work you've produced with that wonderful lens.
Thank you, I really appreciate that, funnily enough we don't hear prais that often so thank you :)
only issue is, which can ruin the experience, and happened to mine is if you do not use it for a while, the autofocus can seize and stop working.
That is very true and is a really shame
Did you make your money back then?

Been shooting digital since 2005, and never had a client ask how many MP my camera wax@@SebastianOakley
as an MFT fan when I see this I feel like a little girl who's just seen a BBC for the first time 😢 and it has a hood on its hood 😮

Love that lens - Although I've gone Z i'm keeping the 600 f4 AFS ...🦘
It's an incredible lens, how do you find it with the Z adapter?
