Same but I am far from wealthy and I didn't have any issues spending my 12 year old daughters college fund, (I have time to replace it), lol! I have the 500mm f/4E VR FL and 200-400mm f/4G VRII lens along with 24-120 f/4S, and 70-200FL. I use the D6 mostly, but I just added a Z7 II and 24-120mm f/4S and I'm blown away by the $1200 5x zoom lens, it's as sharp as my 500FL, but a wide-to-tele zoom? Freaking nuts how improved the wider angle lenses are. I've had the amazing opportunity to also test a sample copy of the 600mm f/4 S 1.4x TC, and it's unbelievable. I have shot almost every Nikon and Canon modern day-20 years past, super=tele primes and zooms. I've shot the entire Nikon lineup as far as super-tele's are concerned. Before the new 600mmm f/4S, I'd rate the Nikon lenses from sharpest to least sharp, but all are crazy sharp so take with a pinch of salt. Number 1. Nikon 800mm f/5.6E VR FL ( A notch above the rest, for sure) Number 2. Nikon 600mm f/4 S (Video reviewed here, is now the sharpest lens, only second to the 800FL, "Baby Jesus!" It's a $12,500 lens so you should love it. The only reason I bought the 500mm was because the 400FL and 600FL are still big and heavy, regardless if they lost some weight and for me the 500FL is better optically, than the other two. I had the 800FL, but I only bought it for resale, I got it for $7,100 USD before the 800pf was announced and sold it for a profit. It was by a noticeable amount, the sharpest and best image quality I'd ever seen, by a fair bit. Compared to this newest 600mm f/4S VR 1.4x TC is phenomenal and thankfully if you prefer the 600mm f/4 over the rest, you now can enjoy world class leading sharpness. It's a tad sharper than the 500FL and nearly as sharp as the 800FL, so at least with Nikon you get what you're paying for, and I don't regret my two big lens purchases, never ever. I would but them buy them again!

It is just magical, and I'm talking in the wild, not at the local park. I think a lot of the fun is being able to track them and get the shot when they are flying through the air.

I am a bird photographer, and I wouldn't buy that lens "if I could afford it". On the other hand, I could buy a Nikon Z9 + a PF 800mm F6.3for several thousands $ less... And if Canon doesn't get off their ass and make something more intermediate between the RF 800mm F11 ($900) and the RF 800mm F5.6 ($16k) I might eventually go with the Nikon combo I mentioned.

I personally think that the photographers who shoot people etc are the weird ones. but that's just me. as if it's overpriced how much is the Sony and Canon's version cost new.
4:25 Surprised the Z9 doesn't have this feature. On the Canon R3, automatic adjustment for an aperture change when using manual exposure is under the Custom Functions (Orange) Group, 2nd tab, "Same expo. for new aperture" I use it with the Canon EF 200-400 f4 1.4x lens. It has a few options giving you control if it changes ISO and/or shutter speed.
Jared you should come down to Cape May one day during the Hawk migration. It's insanity with all the bird photographers. It's pretty entertaining to watch when they yell out what kind of bird is flying by and everyone points their cameras at it. However, I quickly discovered that they don't take too kindly to someone yelling "Pterodactyl!" but I still did it anyway.
@lansr I don't disagree. Love my D500 and paired with an older (and much cheaper used) F mount version, you would get great results. That said, this paired with a Z9 would be an even better combination, but at much greater expense. In general, you should probably purchase all this kind of gear used. They last forever, and you can save thousands. My comment was really a little more general. 600 F4 lenses for mirrorless from Canon and Sony are 13k without the built-in TC. There's not much difference.
@@thefourthquarter7429 yeah agreed. I paid 2199 for a 600mm vr Nikon lens. Paired with the d500 it is 900mm. Don’t know what else one needs. Done and done for 3k and the client can not at all tell the difference at 11x17 vs a z9 and a Hubble z lens with 20 more elements. Even if I had unlimited capital, I’d stay w d5 d4s and all my f mount lenses. Z lens no better than f in the real world with real, large prints on a table. I challenge anyone to show me the difference between the greatest spotted owl photo made with a d5 and 600mm f mount vs, z glass and mirrorless.
Looks great, have it on preorder with NPS, and I'm obsessed with birds. Proudly weird too. It's realxing, they are among the most challenging of subjects being small and flying around a lot, feather detail is cool and there are so many of them. My only questions: how is it vs. the 800 PF? I own it and love it, but would not really need it if this lens has the built in teleconverter; is it just as sharp as the 800 when using the TC? (Obviously it's a little heavier though). Hopefully image quality is the same. Thanks for the video.
I love this channel, it is a favorite from the first few shows. This review of an astonishing lens was depressing. Drive your butt down to Conowingo Dam and shoot some Eagles, or hang out with Zamani Feelings and do something interesting with it.
You're really becoming a pain in the butt with your constant Nikon AF bashing ! We all know Nikon is behind the other two big guys, no need to repeat time after time in the course of each and every single video... 😒 It doesn't bring any added value to your video, and makes watching you become boring
Jared the big question everyone wants to know is how much different is the performance with NikonsZ9 AF compared to the competitors. Why are you not showing a side by side comparison like you've done in the past? It would help quell all the noise where people feel that you're bashing Nikon over its AF. How about showing us what the difference is? You would have many more believers proof is in the pudding!!
Because I can't shoot two cameras at the same time in these real world situations I am shooting in. What I do do, is record the EVF, so you can see exactly what I see and then show you the results. I think the results of my final images prove everything that needs to be proven.
"Usually we're curling 70 lbs..." Yeah. A barbell. 😩. Anyway, I'm sure that's a great lens, and I expect Morten Hilmer and Steve Mattheis to order one and get great results with it.
Next version of Z7 would surely have 8K 30p in order to compete better with the R5. Fast scan rate would also be beneficial to enable 20fps+ ES. Not sure about the dual Type B card slots in a prosumer camera however.
Jared never been on a birder hotspot and seen all these bird photographers with their gear. He should go to Conowingo Dam now in the winter and he will see probably hundreds of people with really really expensive gear. It's just their hobby
Great review - good illustration of the maxim that if you have to ask what it costs, you probably can't afford it. Off topic perhaps but I was curious about the use of the word "Skittles" as it is a registered trademark but from what I read, and I am not in any way qualified to render a legal opinion, the use of this term would only be an infringement on the trademark if it were used to describe a candy.
Jared, as a proud weird bird photographer, I'd like to personally invite you to Montana and show you some birds, just as long as I bring along a copy of that 600 ;)
ND filters (like an ND1000 or a graduated ND) are actually very important to make long exposures during daytime. I think you are referring to UV filters.
Expensive primes almost always have objectively better optics than zoom lenses. Plus this is a 600mm f4 and 840mm f/5.6, over a stop faster than any modern superzoom lens.
Super longs lenses are not his bread and butter, he does use them but are not strictly nessary for what he shoots and his style if you watched his chanel long enough. He had them, but most of the time he doesn't use them a bunch. Unlike me as a birder which I live and breathe 1000mm and beyond.
I love my Nikon z9 No problem so far really really happy Hey young man Don’t say lie for you are fantastic subscribers because Nikon autofocus is much much better fantastic because I’m currently use this Nikon Z9 ❤️Sony a1 good ❤️Canon good ❤️Fortune film good It’s really depending Because people don’t know how to use this shit So anyway I’m so happy thank you for your video
Yeah, the problem with this lens is rather textile than anything! The price itself might look ok for this pile of premium glass but I just need new pants with deeper pockets 🤣🤣 Where to get ones?
And there it is... This guy STILL hating on Z9. The Z9 AF is better in certain situations then the A1 and the R3 and not as good in other situations. In reality, they are splitting hairs and there isn't anything I can't get that my friends get with their Sony or Canon and vise versa. But Jared just keep showing what shitty character he has and just keep putting out bad info on Nikon and the Z9 specifically. Z9 shooters don't have the issues he talks about. Maybe he should shoot it more and actually learn how to use a Z9
Bird Photographers are not weird. They are just simple guys with love for _Camouflage_ and hatred for weird hair guy relying on autofocus completely. And *Literally You won't understand the fun or mental freeing of going out into the wild.* Its better you stick to the games where action is predictable (constrained , may be !) and repetitive.
@Photo Bunny Exactly !! He is good concert and on stage photographer. and that's not enough to comment on every genre of photography. Also that comment on Bird Photographers is absolute trash.
I crack up when I see all these UA-cam photographers pushing the exact same details that a manufacturer wants at the exact same time when magically a 15k lens shows up at their doorsteps at the exact same time. Literally no one cares about the weight of this lens. The d model, vr model, ef model, z model… whatever. You aren’t handholding this so couldn’t care less about 1lb weight savings. If you want to make that remark then go out on a 30 mile hike In The Appalachians at 14 degrees F and then I’d put some stock in weight savings claims. I own the VR version and never once even thought about the weight. I’ll never convert to mirrorless because it offers me nothing. I was happy with the 11 AF points of the d2xs at the race track… never held me back. Kids these days all want the wsywig laziness and eye autofocus lions and tigers oh my.
Anyone that can afford (or not) this lens will most likely have atleast S30K invested in a kit, a Z9, a Gitzo GT5563GS legs ($1900) Wimberley Gimbal ($600) and the images won't be any better than the guy with $5K kit ! Just sayin
Canon bodies have had since the 1Dx days a feature where it maintains the exposure with changes to aperture. Super handy for a lot of things not least of which is using an extender or in my case wedding photography as I will hop around the aperture for DOF reasons. One second I'm shooting the bride wide open at f/1.2 and another I'm at f/5.6 getting 2 or 3 people in focus. Or if I swap lenses, like going from my 85mm f/1.2 to my 70-200mm f/2.8. I most likely still am shooting the same exposure for both but with different apertures. You can see how handy this is and Nikon should really do something similar.
The Nikon does what you are talking about which is correct exposer when one of any of the Exposer triangle changes. What Jared is suggesting no camera does which is when the TC is switched on the camera would pick that up from the TC. What you are talking about is when one of the dials is changed on the camera the camera reacts to keep exposure. I think because the TC that's built in is mechanical the camera has no way of knowing because the change in light is on the Light sensor in camera and not the dials
@@RayDeLuca So what you are talking about is not the same as what Canon has. Canon only deals with aperture. And I understand exactly what Jared is asking for. What Canon has will do the exact think Jared wants and do it better.
@@avinashrai11141 Shutter and Aperture Priority are relics of the past and only old school photogs use them because they are so used to using it. They serve no function today with auto ISO. But the Canon aperture exposure compensation feature maintains the current exposure when say you change the aperture or lens with another aperture. It doesn't rely on metering which is key, it is simply maintains the current exposure when you change the aperture. Which is exactly what Jared wants. So his exposure doesn't jump around in consistent lighting like he was explaning. Just instead of being connected to the flick of the switch, it is for any aperture you want. Which is more versatile especially if you change lenses, which is kinda why we buy interchangeable lens cameras in the first place..... Real pro's use manual most of the time, old school and new school. Next most useful is auto ISO, you select your ideal shutter speed and aperture you want and the camera automatically selects the lowest possible ISO to make the exposure. Shutter priority or Aperture Priority requires you to use a higher ISO than you need in order to have enough buffer for when the exposure changes because of the other two settings. Both those modes were made during the film era when ISO was fixed, they are just a carry over to digital. And also useless.
“For whatever reason a lot of people like to shoot birds”. Sorry Jared, that disappoints me a lot. When you don’t understand the reason’s why people like to shoot birds, would be similar to say “for whatever reason people like to shoot baseball or bowling games…

Can you program one of the four buttons to drop or raise the ISO when you flip the teleconverter?
Looks good for Sports and outdoors.
I'm a bird photographer. Definitely weird. Unfortunately not rich and weird, so this lens may as well not exist. I'll have to stick to my 200-500.
*Stares at powerball ticket wishing for a miracle*
It's not overpriced, worth it especially with built-in TC. Unfortunately, I can't afford it...yet. Used in a couple years, maybe 😀.
Dude. It ain’t the Hubble. It doesn’t need to be 15k. Grab yourself the f-mount version and a d500, then use the teleconverter as a coaster
I like birds. Bird pictures are priceless.
Good move Nikon, giving this lens to a Nikon hater. If Jared can't find anything to complain about, it must be awesome.
Auto Iso with control range will help you than lowering shutter speed .
Nikon have the best best lenses out there. By far at this point.
I just preordered it when it was announced. I plan to use it to shoot .... the moon :D
15K is not too expensive when compared to the Leica glass.
Great stuff, wish i could aford it.
did you go blurry 12:00
The Canon autofocus failed on a nearly static subject :O
Just got my copy of this lens & I love it, but it’s each to their own I guess!!… 💁
😂 it’s like you are having teeth pulled when you begrudgingly compliment Nikon.
Will stick to my 200-400mm f4 VR2 with teleconvetor on . Need a bit more room to zoom in and out of a subject
@@froknowsphoto I remember you had on tripods three different cameras to test tracking humans why is that not possible now?

Jared polin Can you give me that camera & lens ? ..😊
Good review but I was wondering if Olympus with their 150-400mm lens wasn't the first to produce a lens with a built-in teleconverter.
No, Canon EF 200-400 f4 was the first, then the Nikon AF-S 180-400 f4 TC few years later.
@@pahafx Thanks. Good to know.
"Usually we're curling 70 lbs..." Yeah. A barbell. 😩. Anyway, I'm sure that's a great lens, and I expect Morten Hilmer and Steve Mattheis to order one and get great results with it.

how do you get the metadata to show up in lightroom classic over the top left of the image like that?

Sigh. I'm a Doctor & Lawyer & Author. At that price, I'd rather add the Hassy 100MP and your book "FroKnows Shill". Lol
Jared never been on a birder hotspot and seen all these bird photographers with their gear. He should go to Conowingo Dam now in the winter and he will see probably hundreds of people with really really expensive gear. It's just their hobby
You forgot to blur out the LR settings while showing Skittles on the preset plug.
Jared extra salty today! 🤣
Great review - good illustration of the maxim that if you have to ask what it costs, you probably can't afford it.
Off topic perhaps but I was curious about the use of the word "Skittles" as it is a registered trademark but from what I read, and I am not in any way qualified to render a legal opinion, the use of this term would only be an infringement on the trademark if it were used to describe a candy.
shoot some bald eagles diving down and grabbing fish, then you'll see.
Jared, as a proud weird bird photographer, I'd like to personally invite you to Montana and show you some birds, just as long as I bring along a copy of that 600 ;)
Yeah, Jared Flexin

Why do you show the lens always with the hood?
who else wants to see a home video of Jared curling 70lbs dumbells on each arm?
"The lions and tigers and no bears"🤣
I still do not getting people who hate teleconverters but like nd filters on/in lens.
ND filters (like an ND1000 or a graduated ND) are actually very important to make long exposures during daytime. I think you are referring to UV filters.
As a nature photographer, and Sony user, I'd like to have a lens like that from Sony. But I think it's not in its plans 🤨
I wanna see it on a Z30...
And the question is, why Jared hate Nikon AF so much 🤔
Because it’s not as good as other AF systems
@@filgiupo4853 How Dare you! ..........:)
300mm 2.8 already, CanNikSon!! And Nikon can make it a 300 2.8 TC
why does he say photo like that
I don't need it, I have no use for it. But I want it.
Might be useful for taking shots at rocket launches, no?
Why would someone go for this instead of something like a 200-600 if the goal is to be able to hit multiple focal lengths?
because f4
Expensive primes almost always have objectively better optics than zoom lenses.
Plus this is a 600mm f4 and 840mm f/5.6, over a stop faster than any modern superzoom lens.
We want that shallow depth of field for subject separation :D
Because it is 1,3 stops faster at 600mm and a lot sharper than a 200-600.
I love how your “wind test” is basically just you spitting on the lens/camera.
😂😂😂😂😂
LoL nailed the rich bird photographers that haven't yet saturated the market with bird pictures
Super video.👍🏻
Do you think you'll have more time with the lens in the future? If so, what would you shoot?
Super longs lenses are not his bread and butter, he does use them but are not strictly nessary for what he shoots and his style if you watched his chanel long enough. He had them, but most of the time he doesn't use them a bunch. Unlike me as a birder which I live and breathe 1000mm and beyond.
Like sniffing and licking a lens isn't weird? You can send me your crappy Z9 so I have a backup for mine.
When you get to sixty or seventy, you'll get it
its a monster

Nikon should accept kidneys in payment for this lens. That way, people can crowdfund such a lens for another person, by donating a kidney. ;)
if i was a Sony, oh mean Nikon guy I would buy it for my surf photography, but I am a Canon guy.
Well, there people who think Baseball is Sports. So If I had the choice, I would choose the birds over Shooting a Boring "Sports"-Game. :D

I’ll take “weird”. 😂. Been called worse.😮
Is it better than Sony's $12k 600mm?
Yeah, the problem with this lens is rather textile than anything! The price itself might look ok for this pile of premium glass but I just need new pants with deeper pockets 🤣🤣 Where to get ones?
This is one of those if you can't afford it you're not even in the demographic for it lenses.
That's a bazooka not a lens
Come on Jared we all know you're sleeping with it.
You most definitely squat. I can tell... Get your b-roll guy to do semi-totals instead. Those buns are stealing the show from our 16 grand lens, here
And there it is...

Just sayin
Sounds like you’re in denial about your $5K setup?
Well that’s cheep right ? 😅
More expensiv then my car......
There’s a viewfinder indicator when TC is enabled so camera definitely knows
@@RayDeLuca So what you are talking about is not the same as what Canon has. Canon only deals with aperture. And I understand exactly what Jared is asking for. What Canon has will do the exact think Jared wants and do it better.
I cant understand why someone want that to happen in completely manual mode. For that you have Shutter and aperture priority.
