Don't know why horror filmmakers miss on the opportunity to make uncanny characters like this, easily the scariest type of horror design in my opinion
Insidious 1 had some good uncanny valley effects. They reminded me of the music video to Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.
@@theaumes1337yeah they do kinda give Black Hole Son vibes. Another I might add is Megan
wheres the mandela catalogue movie WE NEED MORE UNCANNY DESIGNS IN HORROR FILMS 🗣🔥
Jordan Peele's Us did this, didn't it
@@theaumes1337The scene with the frozen family was the scariest part of the movie for me
The “person” looking at you from the door was the scariest thing in this video. Absolutely some anglerfish type monster trying to lure you in.
I'm like 90% sure it's just a girl with grey makeup but yeah that video triggers the hell out of my fight or flight reflex
Minute?
can i have a cigarette
For real the way it like barely blinked and the way it’s smile flashed just gave off the most “this is not human” feeling I’ve ever seen before. It felt like it was trying and failing to imitate a human.
@@StargazerSkyscraper Cultured.
Regarding the police sketches, the uncanny-ness is actually totally on purpose. They exaggerate certain features in order to have the skecth stick into peoples minds. The creepy sketch at 4:28 got recognized by a family member from her very distinct smile.
That's awesome. Thanks.
@@girlofthealpinesthat's literally what they said..

This face was added onto a roblox game , Nico’s Nextbots , inspired by Garry’s mod . The face was named Laurel.
They later removed the face days after because they discovered it was actually a police sketch of a dead , decomposing body , Jenny Gamez
…
I've heard someone say it's to avoid getting sued if it looks not identical to a random person
The police sketch at 4:28 where "they weren't even trying" actually directly led to the victim being identified. Her name was Jenny Gamez
Horror has never sent me into a panic before until I watched one uncanny valley video and I just couldn’t handle it. It triggers something in your brain that makes you think it *could* be real, whereas a lot of horror you’re like “scary but can’t be real”
it trigger fight or flight for me
Yep. I’m deathly terrified of it.
watching people's reactions on the uncanny valley help me understand more of the psychology on it. im interested in horror and such, so this was actually pretty informative. it's interesting to see what disturbs people.
They tried with Truth or Dare!
...they need to try harder
edit: I think I commented on the wrong comment, srry
Nothing disturbs me. I’m very dangerous
@@TonyChurch112 Please read this back to yourself a few times
@@reid3031I scared myself reading my own dangerous threat. Now what?
Bro the way you commented this is very uncanny.. Are you human?
When your brain doesn't know if something is an immediate threat, it defaults to "this could be dangerous." That feeling of possible danger mixed with nothing immediately threatening is where the "creep factor" comes from.
While Spencer's tiktoks didn't necessarily spook me, they made me 'just' uncomfortable enough that I would say it is A+ uncanny.
And that's the thing - uncanny isn't supposed to be fear or terror. Just enough to trigger the slightest bit of adrenaline
It's the kind of scary that doesn't hit you until you're thinking of getting that snack at 3am
oh it made me spike up alright, jesus christmas. i felt like i had to run every time
@@bernadetteobaglietto5923 gotta get that snack, man...

fuck man, i'm so hungry, but my house is full of T H E M E N .
He does a good job. Would be easy to make them all jumpscares or really gross faces, but he manages to scratch that horror itch while still being just a fun and entertaining reel/tiktok.
the scariest thing ive heard someone say about the uncanny valley was that, there had to be a reason why we developed this fear, and the idea is that there was something that looked human that wasnt human that we had to be afraid of, and the idea of that freaks me the fuck out (theory this could also be where the portrayal of skinwalkers and wendigos came from)
Or other species of humans, like homo erectus, neanderthals etc?
@ nah
@Yeah. Im pretty sure that's what it was.
@i feel like where that theory might fall flat is that i don’t feel unsettled at all looking at reconstructions of other human-ish species’ faces. idk about you, but they don’t creep me out at all.
@@shmorangeYea but its our stupid ooga booga monkey brain that was probably enemies with those guys
I don’t know why the guy smiling from the closet literally chilled me to my core.
Same that first image of the disembodied head staring down at you from the basement didn’t affect me but then it changed to that guy in the closet and I felt a chemical reaction in my body no thanks!
@@languid-4535 for real wtf why is it so disturbing?!
@@darksole5593 you think the fact that it’s a video helped? Like that shakiness the camera man has
@@languid-4535 maybe. It would give the contrast of that person being completely still.
Time stamp? It’s night and I dont wanna get too scared. Was it like the second clip? That was utterly disturbing and terrifying
The Abraham Lincoln animatronic looks like it’s doing those expressions people do on those NPC livestreams 💀
i've always liked the theory that the uncanny valley effect stems from the fact that homo sapiens wasn't always the only hominid that populated large parts of the earth. we lived alongside other creatures that were human-like, but not. quite. human. and some of those creatures were bigger than us and stronger than us and carnivores in a way were were not. and mistaking one for another could be the last thing you ever did.
Damn thats interesting!
I "love" (am terrified by) the idea that this sense of the uncanny evolved to protect us from things that can imitate humans very well.
Personally I prefer the theory that we evolved the Uncanny Valley response to protect us from Jimmy Carr
I feel like the face of a non human hominid isn’t going to matter when they tower over you and are very clearly actively aggressive
Not to mention that we most likely mated with other hominids to the point where they are human
In other words Neanderthals?
For me part of why it's so creepy is the unusual behaviour. Like people won't stare and smile at you for so long, I think even a normal/good looking person would seem creepy to you if they would do that. Reminds of a time I walked to my house which is on a little hill kinda and from the other direction walked a woman towards me. She stopped at some point with still a lot of distance to me and didn't move at all, my heart beat so fast when I walked past her, she just stood there and looked at the ground. It was already dark and I didn't see her face, my mother told me she sees her often and it's normal she does that but it creeped me so out.
i think these behaviors wouldn't be uncommon in people with autism probably
@@にちはHYPERSPACEI’m autistic and that’s not what I do I avoid eye contact for long periods of time not maintain it for longer
It is true. Try standing in front of your mirror, open your eyes really wide, and smile as wide as you possibly can. After a few seconds of just staring at your face, it will feel somewhat uncanny, and your brain will start to question if it's really your reflection. My theory is that the uneasy feeling still comes from evolution. You know that when some apes "smile" with all their teeth visible, it's not a smile? It's a threat, a warning or a challenge. The most primitive parts of our brains can still see really wide smiles to mean the same negative intent.
@@najpotenicewolf934 I actually had a dream one time where I was standing in front my bathroom mirror making funny faces. Then I widened my eyes, and smiled with my mouth open but without my teeth, and then I got creeped out and when I moved away, my reflection stayed in the same spot, still smiling.
That was honestly one of the creepiest dreams I’ve ever had
@@najpotenicewolf934 exactly i did that too
I had a dream last night that I was in this afterlife limbo place. It was kind of this eternal place where you don't age.
But there were these hunched over grey humanoids that would chase down people and tear them into pieces.
And for some reason, playing music or singing would make them stay away. So basically, you have to keep music or singing going without stopping if you want to remain in one piece.
well well well, all these years they made fun of me for playing Wonderwall yet here we are
This sounds like left for dead but if it was made by a different studio and was more horror
As my grandma would say, “what are you watching to have that.”
I had a dream that I went into a fish themed dungeon with my friends where I had to use elemental powers to solve fish themed puzzles.
I had one where giants would get you if you didn't make any noise. You had to be noisy so they wouldn't hurt you
What makes the uncanny valley scary is that, at some point in our evolution, we needed to be terrified of something that looked human but wasn’t.
ew 💀
Maybe other species of hominids? If other types of proto-humans were attacking our ancestors, it makes sense that our instincts would alert us now.
Not necessarily, maybe it's because we needed to be scared of people pretending to fit in when they had ulterior motives. Yes, I'm not fun at parties
Corpses. dead bodies. Aren't human.
@@eg-drawobviously they’re no longer human, but like you said dead, but unless they were just getting up like some kinda zombie or something, then I’m sure that’s not what our uncanny sense defense was made for
the only time i've felt scared over a person that didn't seem real was when i was walking in a park with two friends and this guy walks past that seemed so normal but me and one of them got such a bad feeling in our gut because he was too perfect looking, he even said hi and smiled. literally just a guy on the street nothing crazy
Maybe he was just a weird guy? Like if that makes sense, like someone will walk past you and you get a shiver down your spine and don’t know why then realize they weren’t a great person. Either way freaky
I know what you mean. Once I was walking my dog and saw a guy up ahead that had an unnatural smile and staring at me, my dog stopped. To be friendly I said hi as he was approaching but he didn't respond, I got a bad feeling then my dog FREAKED OUT barking at him. he crossed the street and promptly left the block. My dog refused to move and kept her eye on the corner.
My dog does not bark at people, never has and never since.
You people are all complete pricks. You see someone that is nothing but polite and friendly and appears happy, done nothing at all wrong to you, and still: "OMG sooo creeeepy! What a freak!"
Unless someone is doing something that is obviously threatening or menacing to you, you have no reason to sit there with your fucked up judgmental thoughts. Some people are just weird. And 'weird' doesn't have to mean 'threat'. It's just awkward. For all you know, the dude could be on the 'spectrum' or something else. There's plenty of people in this world that, despite being perfectly nice and never doing anything to harm anyone, still just give off a vibe or energy that makes others feel awkward or uncomfortable. And never do they EVER wind up doing anything wrong to anyone, so it's not like you're getting some "gut instinct" about that person.
I hate to use such a cringe and cliche term, but: "Do better". Seriously. You all cry about bullying and mistreatment of others. You all preach about tolerance and equality. So walk the walk. Don't just talk the talk.
Maybe it's your spiritual ability to recognise negative energy around someone idk if it has science behind it but many ancient cultures talk about it.
Yes there are things that pretend to be human... but you know something is off and they are not...
There are things on this earth that hide in the shadows...
And some that will walk right next to you just to see how close they can get before you realize they aren't human...
Just remember don't fear them... they feed off that...
Nah but the girl laughing sounded really convincing. If I heard that from another room I would think she was laughing normally.
The fact Kane made the oldest view SO ACCURATE to the (now closed) mall and those statues is actually crazy to me. What a series.
Kane pixels??
@@alexarias5717 yep yep yep. The one & only.
Jane/John Doe police renderings and sketches are MEANT to look extreme. The idea is that if they accentuate significant details found on the body, people will see the poster, think to themselves "Oh I knew a girl who had that trait" and maybe make a connection. The one at 4:29 is for Jenny Gamez, whose body was unfortunately found in a suitcase along with another. The artist specifically emphasized her dental features which helped her get identified quickly. If you're curious, I would definitely recommend looking for some pictures of her during her life.
Jump scare warning would have been nice in the beginning there, Greg 😅 Wasn't prepared for the creepy smiling faces and almost crapped a little
Same
Uncanny police sketches always get me. It’s not just the way they look but also knowing that they’re portraying people that have done heinous acts… some that may never be found. It’s so frightening
it's the Doe sketches that do it for me, most of them are dead victims of heinous crimes and then they're rendered as inhuman clay freaks and slapped on a missing poster
those sketches are based on what remains are left of the victim, if you can see the teeth all they had was a partial skull
To me that dog looks like instead of barking it just says "bark" in a deep voice.
I think I know what channel you waaatch....👀 does the dog also have black air force energy?
Oh god, don’t remind me of that naked man with a tiny dog head who’s on all fours!
As an artist I can pretty easily say that the cause for the things to look creepy is generally when it has a big smile but wide open eyes, because normally people when they smile close a little bit they're eyes, so when they let they're eyes wide open it seems fake, almost as if the person wasn't human.
Honestly, it's so weird watching your stuff and remembering that you've still got a relatively small community. Every time I tune in for your vids I wonder why you don't have more subs
Please do more uncanny valley videos! Uncanny valley is probably the one thing that scares and disturbs me the most in the horror genre. I feel like it doesn't get as much attention or recognition in horror media as opposed to like, gore and jumpscare-oriented content.
It's one of those things that gives you the same vibes as liminal spaces. It's normal, but completely abnormal. Not being able to pinpoint what exactly feels so wrong about the image. Super fascinating and creepy subject.
I think it gets lots of attention. Basically for the entirety of 2022 UA-cam horror was based on the uncanny valley presented in an analog format with a touch of gore. Take Mandela catalogue for example, I didn’t finish it because I got a little too spooked. It’s a little too focused on the analog part for me but it gets the job done. I do think that “newgen” horror is much too focused on character design instead of diving into a deeper plot, something that can scare you with just words. Now all I see is just scary humanoid monsters with smiles. I feel like after 2016-2017 (When killer clowns were all the rage) horror turned into something much more shallow and honestly I think I’ll have to cook something up myself because everything is so generic now.
Uncanny Valley is so interesting to me, wrote a whole essay about it in one of my classes. I love stuff like this!!
Is the paper available online?
@@futurecat unfortunately no haha, it wasn’t a university level paper just a final essay for my class :)
Idk why but Jim Carrey has always given me that uncanny valley feel. Like I love him and his movies but he sometimes just doesn’t look real…
Spencer's content definitely is a one and done kinda thing. It's REALLY tense the first time you watch it. You get creeped out, maybe even a nice lil jumpscare. But after that, the magic is done, going back and watching its like meh, I get it now. But I think that's what makes his content so good. Is that it puts you into that moment, even if just for a couple of seconds. You're hooked almost instantly. Being able to do that with only a few seconds is pretty impressive, and I don't think he gets enough credit.
5:45 the thing that makes it unique is that it sounds like a real laugh. when greg did it or when i tried it sounded really sarcastic or exaggarated.

That last TikTok series of videos are really quite genius for psychological horror. It’s weaponizing not just the uncanny valley but other oddities of human behavior-the vestiges of our more animal instincts which never seem to go away. Why do we have them, if not for recognizing something that might be a bit “off”? Most people have, at some point, regardless of age, stared at that dark corner and wondered if the form we see is caused by pareidolia or something else. Many people will hallucinate at least once in their lifetime, namely through sleep paralysis, but they may never know it. Sometimes our senses tell us that everything is fine but we feel creeped out for no apparent reason. What if there was a reason? These are the things that could really up the ante in horror movies-not overly terrifying but something is definitely “off.” Imagine you are watching what you think is a slice-of-life-type film but there are either single frames of something creepy or something just out of full view by the camera that is visible but so hard to see that you won’t notice it unless you stare at it.
I personally find those movies to be the best. Which is why The Strangers is my favorite horror flick. The killers would be around, sometimes motionless, in the background just observing and the characters obviously aren't aware of their presence so the audience most likely won't notice them either the first go around. Same goes for Haunting at Hill House and a bit of Hereditary.
This video reminded me of the Slaughter Valley videos by the channel Atomic Shrimp, they're creepy but also funny.
Fun fact we developed The Uncanny Valley to distinguish ourselves from other human species
Thats what I figured! Cool!
I think it was more so dead bodies. Like they are human but not alive and likely carried diseases. Or likely ill humans, they were dangerous but were human
That's not the reason why, just one of the theories!

Doubt but still scary
I think it's the human like features with the lifeless eyes that's what makes them creepy. It's like "you're here but soulless or not alive"
or the opposite too, this thing is alive but I can't understand it's body language or intentions.

the uncanny valley is the most interesting concept to me!!!! so glad you made this video, its weird how much it spooked me tbh
Lady on the plane looks like one of those cpr dummies.
1:43 bro was doing the sigma face 💀💀💀
Police sketches are like that on purpose, because people tend to remember certain features rather than the whole face so they exaggerate the memorable features
One trigger for the uncanny valley seems to be too much symmetry in the face. Asymmetry is actually more normal and beautiful to us.
I'm sorry but the girl laughing with no reaction on her face was talent
This video made me nostalgic for the early 2000s internet. Those of you old enough to have spent a lot of time in the online wild west before social media and centralization will probably know what I'm getting at. This kind of stuff was abundant if you knew where to look back then and it was so much more fascinating too.
Im glad greg decided to speak out about how uncanny his facial hair is.
There's this online analog horror series "Vita Carnis" and something called a mimic in that universe. That thing gave me the heaviest uncanny flight response I've ever had from a video.
YES! They're so intelligent yet don't react like humans or any animals do, they'll leer at you with no urgency or apology, no lack of confidence that you can't escape them, and even no glee in capturing their prey.
The video with the cellar steps was exactly what it it was like climbing them. Was always terrified a hand would come out and grab my ankle and pull me between the stairs. Tbh still get like that now and I'm 46😅

The fact that normal tik tok using people making scarier things than horror movie makers
4:28 the reason that looks so creepy is because that is actually a sketch of a dead body. from what i remember the police were looking for a woman who they belived to have died, so they drew how she would look, with slight decomposition. the reason for the smile is because the area around the mouth would have rotted away already.

I wish horror films used the uncanny valley effect more. The only movie i know that used it well is the grudge.
It's important to remember that you were looking at some victim recreations, those weren't all criminal sketches. The criminal sketches are deliberate because they don't want the wrong people witch hunted. The people who know the suspect, will know the sketch is about them.

I think the "Hidden Talent" for the Laughing Without Facial Expression is more on the fact that the Laugh sounded normal, like, someone was laughing with proper expression.

I thought Uncanny Valley was a cool video game about skin walkers or aliens that turned into uncanny valley people, following the protagonist around but just in the corner of your eyes, and he has to solve a mystery back in his home town about a friend that went missing and these follow him when he gets in to deep.
Like the town is constructed at face value but the longer you look the more you notice something is wrong.
But nvm I guess it’s just a way to describe that ‘off’ feeling you have towards people that look almost dream like.

The fact that The Giy talking about uncanny valley is trying to misdirect us from noticing his uncanny valley 😂
6:26 The Goat Has Emo Hair💀
The first time I heard “uncanny valley “ it was this character named Ena more weirdcore then uncanny valley to me. But, weird core does lean into that topic. It’s the of vibes glitchy and mysterious but, it looks like a simulation. Reminds me of the sims, or the Polar express.
I'm glad people are talking about The Oldest View. It's truly a masterpiece of horror, with a nice liminal aesthetic.
Wendigoon's stream with Kane Pixels is basically director's commentary (Wendigang channel).
This man is probably the best at explaining things 😂😂
The reason that the uncanny valley exists evolutionarily, is that in the past, something *hunted* us that looked almost just like us, so we learned to spot that “almost” and fear it. Which leaves: “What happened to it?” This fear of a dark place in a light room is a primal one. It has been programmed into us by nature, so something was once hiding in the dark, and has disappeared.
yup definitely not real anymore, all extinct, yes they must be.
....animals. Animals hid in the dark. These same animals that have evolved to be able to see in the dark. Sabretooth tigers, bobcats, mountain lions, bears, etc. THAT'S what we feared in the dark. We fear it because it doesn't look like us so our brains go "it must be a new animal I haven't seen before therefore i have no idea how it will act so it is automatically a threat". People are confusing the fear of the *unknown* . You can't accurately predict what something you have no knowledge of will do and THAT'S, what I'd argue, what sets off the fight or flight response. Some people get scared by godzilla films and dragons, you gonna argue those existed too? Or is it more reasonable to believe that something unknown causes an initial panic?
This guy on tik tok also lives in a perfect place tof making those scary vids so this helps allot as well i believe!
Did this uncanny feeling evolve to protect us from things that can imitate humans to hunt us? Like those mimics in the woods, for instance?
