  • Beer & Hops -- Brewing the Best Beers
There is not better flavoring for beer than hops. Hops bring balance and strong aromas to beer and make them beautifully bitter, but how much do you know about the plants themselves? On this Episode of Beer By The Numbers we examine the great vine that makes beer better and last longer. Cheers Beer Nerds!

What's you favorite Hop or Hop flavor?

Fuggles for the flavor, and Cascades for the rich citrus syyle aroma.

This is a hard one, Cascade is an all time classic for me. Nelson Sauvin is a great one but, Eldorado is also one of my favourites!

Very informative! Crazy the amount of effort it takes to make a commercially marketable hop variety!

Started growing our own hops last year, we liked it so much that we're buying 8 new rhizomes to grow more hops!

This is a very thorough educational video about hops. Ive been growing Cascade & Fuggles hops for my days of brewing beer, which I dont any more, but I still grow the hops. And to add to this, I dont enjoy a hoppy beer, particularly the IPA beers, I know the Navies of Portugal & England did like them going to their colonies in 1600 & 1700, but Iam not on a HOT ship, Iam in my backyard enjoying a lager from Narragansett brewers. Thanks for posting.

Haha, I haven't given much thought as to where these old styles used to be enjoyed. Now you have me thinking again... Cheers!

England & Portugal with their colonies in India, the ships going their with supplies etc. needed to add hops (plenty of hops) so the long tumpulous ships journey and the hot climate going into India spoiled the regular beers.......add a lot of hops, and you have a good beer preservative. so INDIA PALE ALE is born. IPA

Thnx for this great video. I wish to read details of how to cultivate (do commercial large scale farming) hops. I mainly wish to know the ideal climatic conditions, soil and water requirements. Do you know of a reliable source / book / website for this? Thank you!

Different direction, but I wonder, what do most brewers do with those discarded Hop cones? Got to be some interesting possibilities for use?

A great idea. I know some compost but I've also seen like hop perfumes and colognes or other smelly things with hops added. But who knows if those are spent hops or not. I'll look into it :)
