  • Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö has known Putin for a decade and often acts as a de facto interpreter, explaining the Russian president's thinking to Western allies - and vice versa. Niinistö is among a handful of world leaders who continue to contact the Russian president, trying to put a stop to the war. Christiane speaks with Niinistö in London to get a sense of Putin’s endgame.

There is no noise in Finland about raising preparedness. When the Commander of the Finnish Defense Forces, Timo Kivinen, had a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Mark A. Milley, the matter was reported by the US Army, not the Finnish Defense Forces. Tomas Ries, assistant professor at the Swedish National Defense College, says that Finland is well prepared and maintained its defense even after the Cold War. Therefore, Finland can increase its defense capabilities without attracting attention. Finland has the second largest ground forces in Europe after Turkey. And Finnish artillery, which is part of the Army, is by far the largest in Europe".

We Finns are not just awake. We are disappointed, because we had hoped Russia would be finally on it's way to becoming a better neighbor, and a better place even for it's own people - even if you can't erase all the old political culture in one go. But that is not all either. In our own culture there is almost nothing else so valuable, but the truth and being trustworthy. Putin may be ruthless, but he has no values to respect. To bully people of other nations like some brat of a school bully may cause fear in many countries now - but there is nothing to cause more determination and will to stand up for one's right to be free of such nuisances. It is useless to be scared, when he declares so evidently, with proof included, that he can and may do what ever he pleases to obtain his objectives - in that point of time, the moment to worry has already been passed. Now, we must take decision and act accordingly. Sure, we are angry because he insults us with threats after having long been without alliance. Putin has no say in that decision, it is the right of sovereign country to choose themselves. And that decision has to be made as coldly as he is being ruthless. No, we are not stupid, for we have had to face Soviet Union alone - and there are still people alive who remember that. Yes, many of us just wish Putin would just end up to some gulag given that he so misses the era of old Soviet Union - yet, one can't merely wish up o stars to solve a problem. It is loud and clear, that he is still a KGB man, still a Soviet man - perhaps not fully so in ideology - but as the old saying goes... Russian respects only strength... he is willing to do anything to get what ever he wants. And so must we be, willing to do what it needs to ensure what we want and need. Certainly that is dangerous. But once more, some people have figured it is time to prepare - our president was not lying either. Many, most of us do not wish to live in that world where one has to bow towards east while not mooning towards west. We remember. We do not intend to stand alone and we will demand our government to act for there is no longer any reason to trust that our country will remain safe. Not even if we did what he demands - because he implies our safety demands it, but he is not worthy of any trust. Besides, we prefer the west, even during the Soviet era - always have. Putin is just a man, a mere macho short of man who consistently polishes his own public image before his own people. Well that only implies there are bad truths he wishes to hide - which the world likely already know anyhow. So no, that is not how a true man behaves, a true man need not to consistently remind that he is a man and strong at that - a true man just is who he is and does what must be done, be it sensitive and caring or something more values and obligations oriented - but most certainly not only ruthless shit. And that can be done quietly without causing harm or hurt to anyone - as a respectable a man should behave. Putin has indeed lost his face and his reputation where it comes to us Finns - and so have those who support him. In general, true respect is something any of us deserve only if we are actually behaving accordingly aka not breaking laws, not telling lies, not threatening people, not having them killed, not stealing from others... we can go on and on. It is useless to rant more. He has done nothing to earn the respect he cries after with this ego-trip of an attack on Ukraine, never mind all the threats.

Finland is much like Greece - defending the Western civilization in the north, while Greece holds the Southern point. Finland is, actually, seriously armed to teeth. Finnish have still not forgotten the horrors of WW2 and 100 000 soldiers killed (a lot for a country of just few million at the time) while defending its independence. Let's take a look: Finland has the largest artillery in Europe (excluding Russia), one of the strongest air defenses in Europe, one of the largest armored forces in Europe with Leo 2´s plus tens of thousands of anti-tank missiles - Swedish-U.K. NLAW, the U.S. made TOW, Israeli made SPIKE-missile, and basic LAWs. 870 000 militarily trained personnel in reserve. 78% of Finland is covered in forests, and there are very few attacking routes to Finland. And the other Europeans ask are you afraid? No, why would I be.

In the 90s Finland bought hundreds of ex-east Germanys tanks, AFV:s, Artillery, vehicles, 300 000 assault rifles and other equipment and paid their scrap-value. In resent years finland has bought used Leopard 2:s from Germany and Netherlands, used MLRS:s from Netherlands. If there is equipment at bargain price, Finland is front of the que. Those days are now over, but when everyone is now purchasing new equipment, finns will be there in ten years when others are selling. :)

As a Finn i have a need to explain this more. We have very colourful language and it's hard to explain all metaphors, which we all Finns love to use. There are two metaphors which are direct warnings to Russia.
    1. When Sauli used that "two cups" metaphor, i believe that was a warning. We have also two cups, friendship and peace with Russia or allying or even joining nato. Russia needs to decide how far/long they act in Ukraine because our allying cup is getting fuller here day after day.
    2. "We surely are awake" metaphor. I believe this was a warning too. We know excatly when it's time to join nato. Again Russia needs to decide how much they want Ukraine, or pay the price here in north, when sweden and finland had enough of this and join nato. When our worry is not worry anymore this will surely happen.

Anyways, this mess is actually looming since the 18th century, where Ukraine has been taken over once by Russia.
This mess is even more looming since they were finally able to be independent again in 1991.
There was always political and military pressure and intrigues towards Ukraine since then.
Putin prepared the world for this very moment since decade by buying right wing friends all over the world to push his puppets into leaderships.
Unfortunately for him, the world is smarter than that, which is why Trump failed his mission to sabotage NATO, and other than the Brexit he could not push anyone else out of EU.
"actually have talked". All right wing parties have very good connections to Putin, but they obviously use them for their very own benefit rather than for their countries. They are now his support to weaken any counter measurements towards him.
And anyone else talked to him as well, else there would not be any economical relationships to enable such impactful sanctions, wouldn't it?
So how is someone supposed to influence someone's decisions, whose closest consultants need to be cautious, and who even pushes his very own folks aside?

Just to think about: after a country invade another country without provocation, kills thousands, displace million and destroy cities and infrastructure, will end up gaining territory rather than: paid for the damage (Impose Russia oil embargo to rebuild Ukraine and compensate all property destruction. They should concede part of his territory (Russia) to Ukraine as punishment for the pain and sufferings.

I can't help but think our civilization is doomed. To fix climate change, we need all the countries working together. But now we appear to be heading into another Cold War, if not Hot War, and hopefully not a Very Hot War (nuclear war). Cooperation to get CO2 emissions down will be impossible. Maybe we will avoid a full scale war, but weird weather will eventually bring massive crop failures. Considering how disruptive a relatively mild pandemic (COVID) was, a global famine does not bear thinking about.....

Nuclear holocaust or Climate holocaust. Pick one (or both). We won't be able to get rid of nuclear weapons as long as there's a warlord in charge of every nation: so we need one-world government. That might also allow us to solve the climate crisis too.

Trash, plastic, miscellaneous household garbage, old vehicles everywhere that smoke when they go down the street. That is literally billions and billions and billions of people Burning everything you can imagine. There is 0.0 way we are going to stop the carbon dioxide fueled global warming. On the good side, eventually there will be more electric cars, hopefully more renewable energy. Fusion reactors come online in 50 years hopefully... Then some of it can be scrubbed out of the atmosphere. Good news is, the earth is wobbly and another actual Ice Age is coming regardless. Could be a long long wait, however, and then the earth would be even worse off though.

I was born in 1949 and lived through the cold war from its start to its finish.
I remember how President Kennedy brought us through the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
When President Kennedy was murdered in Dallas there were some tensions with regard to whether the USSR was behind it.
Through it all I have never seen the situation with regard to nuclear war on such shakey ground. On the other side up until now it always seemed that we in the Free World were dealing with sane, rational human beings on the other side.
This time is different. It cannot be taken for granted that Putin is sane, or stable.
It is alarmingly clear that we all know that Putin has grievously overreacted.
Whether he is sane or to what degree that may be is honestly not my area of expertise. But as a rational person who has on occasion found myself in a tight spot one thing is palpably clear:
    PUTIN IS IN SERIOUS TROUBLE,
    AND OUT OF HIS DEPTH.
WE HAVE NEVER, IN MY ESTIMATION,
BEEN SO CLOSE TO A TERMINAL
    EVENT.
THIS IS A VERY NARROW PATH WE
ARE ON. BUT WE HAVE ONE THING
THAT WE ARE GRACED WITH BY GOD. THAT WE HAVE AN EXPERIENCED AND COMPETENT EXECUTIVE TEAM ON THE JOB AT THIS TIME.
AS OPPOSED TO THE INSANE CREW WE DISMISSED ON JANUARY 20TH LAST YEAR

In the USA, you have just one political party: the elite. They pretend to be a bit different, act a bit different on stage, and sometimes get in each other's way a bit. Then they leave office and swap it for a cushy office job in a company whom they helped further along during their time in office. It's been a long time since the USA had some competency.
Who they have in office does not matter when it is the other side pushing red buttons.
