I had the chance to own a Zeebo and there are two games in particular that really stuck with me and that I can't wait to see in the next part of the video. Zeebo F.C Super League: As much as it is a football game, it is a very fun game (especially for those who like Mario Strikers), the story mode is funny, the gameplay is really good and there was an excellent co-op, I remember of playing for several hours with my brother and it was really cool to be able to use the Zeeboids, an interesting fact is that this is one of the 3 Zeebo games that uses the console's achievement system and that keeps the progression with your Zeeboid (you could gain experience with your Zeeboid and use it in other games, unfortunately only 3 games on the console used this system ), I remember that I got to be among the top 50 in the online ranking of my region, I had an excellent good time with this game . A Game of Eggs/Um jogo de Ovos: It's a game based on the Mexican movie "A Movie of Eggs", as silly as it sounds it's actually a pretty good 2D platformer and even had a really fun cool multiplayer, I dreamed of seeing this game being re-released on WiiWare, it would have been perfect, but unfortunately it never happened. An honorable mention also goes to Zenonia, it's an excellent RPG and the Zeebo version was the only one that had a Portuguese translation, this game is (or was) available on the DSi Shop on the Nintendo DSi, eShop on the Nintendo 3DS and on the Playstation Store on the PSP, PSVita and PS3 too, I recommend giving it a go, it's a great game.
Just a small correction at 30:46, it is not that the PC has the full game (although it has). What the comment meant was that the RE4 PC version SOLD by Fullgames was cheaper. Fullgames was a monthly magazine in Brazil that always had a CD/DVD game with it, sold for like R$ 18,00 (something like US$ 4 or US$ 5). The magazine edition with Resident Evil was also released in 2009.

Brazilian here. Ridge Racer kills the Zeebo console, literally. The game leaks data into the emmc memory, until it fills it and corrupts the data, compromising even the Zeebo OS and the Brew OS behind it.
Like a really bad implementation of swap storage? Damn. I'm surprised they didn't just put a cap on that so it doesn't overwrite used memory. It would make the game crash yes, but at least it wouldn't brick the console.
So not only could it have an even CLOSE port of a 1993 arcade game that was getting a near flawless port in 1995, it also kills the system. GOOD. GREAT.
Wait, so even only playing it in very short sessions only would still eventually kill the Zeebo if I understand correctly? It's a cumulative thing and doesn't reset when you turn off and back on your Zeebo (or maybe completely unplug it)? If so, man that's freaking insaaaane! It litterally chips away at the consoles life in a sense for every second you spend on that game! Also, does the Zeebo have any "factory reset" feature accessible to the user? And if so, would that reset all that cumulated crap in the eMMC? (Assuming you'd do so before it bricks obviously. And yeah it'd come with it's own massive downsides doing so of course. Considering all your saves are gone and even your games you paid for and can't download anymore nowadays. [AFAIK anyway])
@stopskeletonsfromfighting I worked as an art director on one Zeebo game: Zeebo FC Super League, one of the last games developed before the console's well deserved demise. Please don't skip this one, looking forward to hear what you think of it!
@@SummonerArthur Zeebo games, as far as I know, were exclusively developed in the Zeebo Interactive Studio, where I worked as an art director. And afaik, there was no special hardware for development, but I might be misremembering. A Zeebo programmer would know more about it. If you're asking about software, also no. It was all developed from the ground up in Brew.
Oh man, that comment about fullgames, unlocked some core memories to me. here in brazil, back in the time, we had a magazine called "fullgames" that came with a CD with, not surprisingly, a fullgame, usually old and/or lesser kown games, but i bought the issue with RE4, and probrally have the CD/DVD laying around somewhere. That a bit of brazilian gaming history
Yeah, and at the time Zeebo released, Fullgames had one issue that came with the first PC port of RE4 (the buggy, Ubisoft one), that cost something like R$15,00 IIRC (around US$5,00 at the time, and US$3,00 now). So, basically, it was a much better deal to buy the magazine and get the game for PC than buy a Zeebo and get a bad port of RE4.
Acho que a fullgames quis deixar bem claro que era o jogo full pra não confundir com aquelas revistas de 2000 jogos em 1 que era um monte de jogo de MSDOS
Man, The Zeebo, at least we tried 🇧🇷🇧🇷. I'm glad you were able to get every single game because god knows how you would get the games now, straight up vaporware or close to it now. Thats a piece of Brazilian Gaming History right there. You would definitely get a couple of free beers from me if you ever visit Rio de Janeiro
Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi was gonna be on the Zeebo. If it can BARELY do a launch title PS1 game, IMAGINE the Zeebo trying to do the Dreamcast The Zeebo would've erupted into flames
He's such a great gaming UA-camr! Fun fact, he got his start on the channel as The Happy Video Game Nerd, a counter to all the AVGN content. The videos are from 15 years ago so they've certainly aged a bit, however that optimism, passion and effort has always been on full display. Dude is like the puppy of gaming UA-cam, people may try to replace him, but nobody meets the genuine energy he has.
30:50 - I know you were probably just shortening it for time and stuff, but I think this really struck a memory with me. For those who don't know, Fullgames used to be a Brazilian magazine that, as the name advertises, gave out full, legit PC games (I actually don't know if they were LEGIT legit, but I recall buying S.T.A.L.K.E.R from one of their issues, and it came without any problems). Possibly the only exposure that many Brazilians had to legit PC gaming.
They were legit, labelling them as a gift with the magazine made it so the company paid magazine taxes rather than game taxes, and used magazine distribution channels, so it was much cheaper to make, distribute and sell.
Audio quailty drops from 40:09 to 40:36. It drops again at 41:10 and is completely mute between 14:22. The audio quality remains reduced until roughly. 41:36. I guess the Zeebo was just too powerful for the copyright bots. This system was apparently going to get a port of Sonic Adventure. It was canceled unfortunately, so we never got to experience Big's fishing on the Zeebo, and we never got to hear the Zeebo open its heart. We also never got another version to make fun of and call the actual worse version since it would've topped the already terrible PC version of the Xbox version of the Gamecube version of Sonic Adventure (we fix it using mods).
At 5:00, most Brazilians actually call the game "soccer", because we're taught North-American English in our schools rather than British. So we also say "fries", "elevator" and "hood", instead of "chips", "lift" and "bonnet". EDIT: As an added note, we call "American football” the one with the 🏈
Is that really true? I always thought Brazilians had fights over US people calling it Football, I can't testify about the British because not all countries in Latin America are the same. É Futebol, eu não creio que vocês Brasileiros fala Inglês do US, mais eu soi um gringo... meu país fala Inglês no _inca-la-perra_ (UK).
@@fixedfunshow I can't speak for most of my compatriots, but me and my other English-speaking friends tend to call it football just because, well, your foot goes to the ball, so it makes more sense. And yeah, we're taught USA's English, but most end up not caring enough o learn it :/
@@fixedfunshow We really do learn US English. We called it Futebol (Football) on a daily basis, unless we are speaking (in English) with a foreigner, then we say Soccer. As for calling US people out... we just like to be pricks. We really don't care that much, but it's funny to see people think we care. We prolong being obnoxious as much as we can... for everything, really... but in all honesty, we don't care.

@@1stCallipostle They did a lot of stuff that's noteworthy if you go through their backlog. But they've also done their fair share of games that were just jobs and Shantae is basically the franchise that they're the most known for. To the point that people just consider them 'the Shantae company.'
I was 24 years old in 2009 when this thing came out in Mexico which is where I’ve lived all my life, I’ve been playing videogames since I can remember, and the first time I heard about the Zeebo was until Uncle Derek started talking about wanting to make a video about it. I cannot understate how much of a non-entity this console was over here. I don’t know a single person who knew this shit ever existed. We had a Saturday morning tv show about Nintendo that broadcasted on a national over-the-air network that lasted 5 years throughout the 90s. We had an official Nintendo magazine for Mexico that lasted 30 years. We had Nintendos at home (and Xbox and PlayStation). Zeebo was for no one. PS: amazing video as always, Derek and Co.!
Piracy was definitely a HUGE thing at the time, but we also were a decent market for regular full price games. On the cheap side, we had NES clones, PS1 clones, those 1000 games things, I even had one that used plastic discs with (I imagine) microscopic groves. I don't know for whom this was for.
Also unrelated, but as a long time fan, just wanna say I'm really proud at how far you've come content wise. Happy Gaming Nerd is fun and still you, but being the opposite of AVGN kinda pigeonholed you a bit, like it's only mentioned on UA-cam as part of the AVGN era. Compare that to now, you have a unique and clear identity, editing style, writing style, everything. There isn't another UA-camr that's gonna scratch the itch for Uncle Derrick ranting about games. Thank you for the 15 years of great videos!
Tip: "Rolimã" is pronounced similar to holy mann, it is the name of a "cart" made of wood using bearings as wheels, "rolimã" in Portuguese is one of the synonyms for "bearing". These wooden carts are like a skateboard that you sit on, but the front axle is only held by a frame in the middle, so you place your feet close to the ends of this front axle, and use it to control the direction, while the car runs downhill.
Finally, I've been waiting for this ever since this was teased in the original Zeebo retrospective. Keep up the great work Uncle Derrek! You guys deserve every amount of success that comes your way!
One, welcome back Derek and Grace. It's great to have you both back. Two, can you guys get an Oscar for the best Raycon ad ever made? So bold. So evocative. So brilliant. 😌👌
I was a developer at Tectoy Digital from mid-2008 until its end in 2011 and witnessed the whole Zeebo weirdness from inside, really strange (but cool) days. As bizarre as it may seem now, much of those decisions made sense at the time (even when things got really weird, what we'll hopefully see in part 2). Others, to this day, still make me wonder what they were thinking (and by "they" I mean mostly Qualcomm and whoever approved that Ridge Racer port). IIRC, from the point this video ends (late 2009) until the beginning of the end (late 2010) the quantity and quality of games increased significantly. So did the weirdness factor, as focus shifted from mostly sports / racing to educational games. There were some last-minute China-only educational games that I'm not sure they were even released (but that's some great material for the next video if they were).
30:48 it actually says "the PC version is cheaper in Fullgames" Fullgames was a magazine that "gave away" full PC games as a "gift". It was actually a way to tumble through the tax system and sell games paying magazine taxes. They were a mainstream trend in the early 2000s, after the demo-filled CD gifts in PC magazines of the late 90s. I remember there being at least 2 "full game magazines" at the time, Fullgames and Big Max. I still have my copy of Alone in the Dark 2 from Big Max hahaha

That Double Dragon exclusive boss really reminds me from Streets of Rage 4's Miss Y boss. The color palette and event main weapon being a sword in a beat em up game, so odd that they are too much alike
Thanks for the new episode! My day always gets brighter when I see a SSFF video light up on my subscription feed. Recently I had my own kinda SSFF experience when I got an Oculus Quest 2. One of the first things I wanted to do with it wasn't even to play VR-only games. It was to experience Final Fantasy 14 with VR. Which is an unofficial/unsupported fan mod. It was a bit of a challenge to get it working, but the payoff was worth it. Let me tell you; if you've been playing an MMO for this long, it's a whole new world when you experience it at ground level from character POV. Especially in 14 where there's some downright GORGEOUS locales. I just wish I didn't get motion sick after about 10-15 minutes of it. Regardless, when I got it working I thought to myself "Uncle Derek would be proud" :P
I remember back in the day the website for the Zeebo used to show upcoming games and Sonic Adventure was listed was one of the games. It made all the sense back then, Sega and Tectoy had been long time partners, but it never came to be.
@StopSkeletonsFromFighting , "Rolimã" is Portuguese for "Ball bearing". In that case, it means a traditional Brazilian Gravity Racer that has ball bearings instead of wheels
Its always a blast watching you go through all these weird games on punching weight, and this video was no exception, fantastic job. As someone who is passionate about game preservation, even for terrible games, the existence of this video is great, especially when videos like this lead to the discovery of hidden gems like Zeebo double dragon. You know how sometimes, when companies make game collections, they'll throw in a weird bonus game, like Kid Dracula in the Castlevania collection? Maybe if they ever make a Double Dragon collection, they'll include Zeebo Dragon as a bonus. Probably not, but I can dream
I NEED more Zeebocore music. I love how you guys manage to always make your videos really informative and interesting while also never dropping your signature lighthearted and optimistic vibes - it's something I think UA-cam (and the internet in general really) could always use more of. The thing that's so weird to me about the Zeebo is that I look at a lot of the games and think "idk, these don't look that bad?" and then you remind me that it was 2009-2010, not 1998

I'm brazilian and wanted to say about that "Extreme Roll Man" game... "Rolimã" is supposed to be that kart the character was ridding ... It was very common in the 80s and early 90s for a dad to actually build those simple "karts" with some tools and cheap plywood for their kids to go down a slope in the streets or in parks... it's not as common today but if you look for "carrinho de rolimã" on google you're gonna see there's still karts being made and sold
Love the video, great stuff as usual! The Zeebo's history and game library is so ridiculous, I love when you cover it! PS: I almost never comment on videos but I don't use Twitter or really any social media anymore so I just wanted to comment on here to say that I appreciate you and Grace and I'm always happy to see when you guys have a new video out! Keep on keeping on.
37:30 Rolimã is the brazilian name for soapbox car, but the car is a plank in 4 wheels. It was one of the most popular child's play back on Brazil, before the internet age and criminal rating increases took all of the kids off the streets in early 2010's
I still hold on to my fully localized Roller Coaster Tycoon copy from Fullgames. It was bonkers! I remember seeing Driver: Parallel Lines on it after a few years. Should have grabbed a copy.
Super informative on a very rare area of gaming history! Got quite a few solid laughs too 😂 Don't over-stress yourselves, but I'm loving the new SSFF content 💖
Uncle Derek, great video as always - just some more context on what brazilian kids were playing for their footb- - Soccer fix back in 2009: If you search for "Bomba Patch PS2", you will find a gallore of mods for what was the most famouos soccer game in Brazil, PES (Winning Eleven back in the day). These Bomba Patches (literally patch bomb) would update the last PS2 game to whatever year they were out, with custom player names, visuals and uniforms, so kids with only PS2 were actually always playing the latest stuff. These patches still exist to this day, so PS2' Winning Eleven Bomba Patch 2023 is a thing!
Namco securing the Zeebo market before Sega could even blink. Imagine if Daytona USA could compete against the sheer excitement of Ridge Racer on the Zeebo.
Just shut down the bar for the day and I get a new SSFF video?? Glad it was empty because I may have let loose a very enthusiastic, 'F**K YEAH!'. So glad you guys are OK and able to bless us with quality content.
Please look at the band belushi speed ball. They've released albums on n64, gba, and snes carts. All of which work in their respective consoles. While you couldn't build a whope episode of punching weight around them, it could make for an interesting inclusion in a grab bag episode

Also, does the Zeebo have any "factory reset" feature accessible to the user?
And if so, would that reset all that cumulated crap in the eMMC?

I worked as an art director on one Zeebo game: Zeebo FC Super League, one of the last games developed before the console's well deserved demise. Please don't skip this one, looking forward to hear what you think of it!
Do you mind if I ask you how were games made for it? Did such a thing as a zeebo development kit exists?

I love the reference to "Zeebo fatigue" is if it's a globally recognized disorder and not a problem that has only ever happened to Derek specifically
As a Brazilian I can confirm everyone here had Zeebo fatigue at some point
Saber does legit have a cool design.
And to think, no one outside of Brazil ever knew about her. Until now.
Thank you for your service, Uncle Derek.
Feels like someone on the dev team's OC waifu.
tbh not many in Brazil knew about her until now, too lol
Just a small minority of brazilians knew about her character! talk about a underrated character
She reminds me of Miss Y from SOR4 if she dressed like her brother. Unless Saber was the inspiration for her...
Or Mexico since it was there too
Man, The Zeebo, at least we tried 🇧🇷🇧🇷.
If it can BARELY do a launch title PS1 game, IMAGINE the Zeebo trying to do the Dreamcast
The Zeebo would've erupted into flames
"There is no music in Quake on the Zeebo."

The optimism of this guy on his videos is just fun to watch.
I can see the passion and effort he puts on his videos.
Why are you staring so hard at the man's passion for...ya weirdo🤷🏾♂️
He's such a great gaming UA-camr! Fun fact, he got his start on the channel as The Happy Video Game Nerd, a counter to all the AVGN content. The videos are from 15 years ago so they've certainly aged a bit, however that optimism, passion and effort has always been on full display. It’s a good contrast to how I learned of the zeebo.
I learned it from Yahtzee in his RE4 video where he called it a kitchen appliance.
Hopefully this will raise zeebo awareness and bring solace to those afflicted with it
30:50 - I know you were probably just shortening it for time and stuff, but I think this really struck a memory with me.

Same, thought it was just me
At 5:00, most Brazilians actually call the game "soccer", because we're taught North-American English in our schools rather than British.

It's funny you mentioned how Saber from Double Dragon Zeebo looks and animates like someone from Guilty Gear or BlazBlue, two fighting games developed by Arc System Works.
And today, who was the developer for both Double Dragon 4 and both River City Girls games (which have ties to Double Dragon among other Kunioverse games?) That's right. Arc System Works!
They're all connected!
ASW owns the Double Dragon and Kunio-kun IP since 2015. They also made the Master System port of DD way back in 1988
ASW published the River City Girls games.
It was WayFoward who developed them, and I find it weird that you forgot that tidbid.

They managed to run Pacmania with full-screen tearing. That's amazing Namco nice work 😶
Tip: "Rolimã" is pronounced similar to holy mann, it is the name of a "cart" made of wood using bearings as wheels, "rolimã" in Portuguese is one of the synonyms for "bearing". These wooden carts are like a skateboard that you sit on, but the front axle is only held by a frame in the middle, so you place your feet close to the ends of this front axle, and use it to control the direction, while the car runs downhill.

30:48 it actually says "the PC version is cheaper in Fullgames"
Fullgames was a magazine that "gave away" full PC games as a "gift".

Its always a blast watching you go through all these weird games on punching weight, and this video was no exception, fantastic job. As someone who is passionate about game preservation, even for terrible games, the existence of this video is great, especially when videos like this lead to the discovery of hidden gems like Zeebo double dragon. Maybe if they ever make a Double Dragon collection, they'll include Zeebo Dragon as a bonus. Probably not, but I can dream

The thing that's so weird to me about the Zeebo is that I look at a lot of the games and think "idk, these don't look that bad?" and then you remind me that it was 2009-2010, not 1998
Most releases in '98 were honestly still cleaner.

Loved this video!! I just saw an article today, talking about how a zeebo emulator is currently in development from the ground up! It'll be great for more and more fans to experience zeebo games.
Zenonia was a pretty good RPG, I have on my old 3DS.

Zenonia was designed for and released on Android first, then iOS, then the other formats.

Fun fact! FullGames was a magazine which you could get an original PC game on the cheap... And this is how I got into Assassin's Creed!
I still hold on to my fully localized Roller Coaster Tycoon copy from Fullgames. It was bonkers! I remember seeing Driver: Parallel Lines on it after a few years. Should have grabbed a copy.

Uncle Derek, great video as always - just some more context on what brazilian kids were playing for their footb- - Soccer fix back in 2009:
If you search for "Bomba Patch PS2", you will find a gallore of mods for what was the most famouos soccer game in Brazil, PES (Winning Eleven back in the day).
