I have a great strategy for making much more effective IED protection for serving U.S. servicemen: Keep them at home. The truth is, there's no level of armor or armament that's going to protect a wheeled vehicle from an explosive boobytrap, and pretending that IEDs are an engineering problem instead of a political one is just another classic example of the obtuseness of policymakers, or at least the obtuseness of their PR. The truth is, no matter where you spend money trying to protect servicemen from harm, insurgents and terrorists are going to just look for the next weak link in your defensive posture. Instead, we should be building armed forces designed to protect our own territory, not occupy the territory of places we have no business trying to govern. This strategic stupidity is costing American taxpayers trillions of dollars, as mission creep driven by stupid policy decisions turns what was once a $14,000 utility vehicle (the original 1941 jeep, adjusted for inflation) into a $400,000 boondoggle.
My unit replaced all our Humvees with JLTVs. I drive them all the time and I can say they are very cool looking inside and outside and they are awesome but biggest problem I have with it is driving it. The steering wheel is very sticky and has like no power steering.

Buy yourself a cadillac. We have a complete wall in the plant covered with letters from soldiers and their families thanking the workers for getting their sons and daughters home safely. They have them. Or at least they used to. If you are talking about machines to set off buried mines and explosives. They don't use them very often it seems.
Just to clarify, was the $400k per JLTV the total lifetime cost of the vehicle per DOD procurement which includes all the maintenance and spare parts it will ever need, or the cost of each unit without spare parts and maintenance? MotorTrend reported earlier this year that the DOD does vehicle procurement that includes spare parts and maintenance for the lifetime of the vehicle and that is why the per unit cost seems high upon first glance. It would be equivalent to buying a new car, all the spare parts, tires, and oil changes you'll ever need in one transaction.
Yeah man, vehicles are going to get more expensive as technology advanced. The HMMWV will still be in service for a very long time, but they’re aging, and hardly work as it is now.
Each contract is different, but some do include a certain number of spare parts and any special tools to fix them along with specific training for mechanics to work on them.

All of those Turkish vehicles listed either came out a year after the South African inspired US MRAP program was in full production (Which means they just followed suit because the US started doing it) or the US already has something similar decades ago.
The JLTV's are awesome, I've seen one in person, and they are WAAAY better then the Humvee's they are replacing. The air suspension which can adjust your ride height was one of the cooler features.
If they could ever keep the damn things running. HMMWVs in the Motorpool are hardly working at all, and I'm very skeptical a JLTV will work better in the long run.

I was in Germany when 3rd Armored Division got the Humvee. It was too big for German forest roads and was as difficult to hide as an M113 (another proven workhorse that was turn in for a piece of 💩). Corporate reps swarmed our units during FTXs and afterwards in garrison asking for opinions and feedback. Aside from being able to carry more “beans-and-weenies” (slang at the time for commissary-bought snacks, which was frowned upon anyway), no one in my battalion had anything good to say about it. And rightfully so. Too big and too big of a profile, unnecessarily restricting roads and trails it could go, a maintenance nightmare because ONLY the HHC mechanics were authorized to fix ANYTHING on it, and a gas hog (thus requiring a larger log chain and more refueling stops). I’m glad to see it go, but I am worried that it is going to be replaced with a vehicle designed by Pentagon POGs rather than troops (think “The Bradley” as the best example of this). I also worry that the army is moving to a vehicle right for the war-we-just-fought rather than the wars in other terrain that we will fight next. Even at IOBC in 1979, we were still taught how to fight WW2 rather that low intensity conflicts.
2:10 An important thing to consider is that you could decrease survivability by adding armor, which makes the vehicle slower and less mobile. Hopefully, they’ve learned from the humvee and added cup holders.
I've been in the Army for ten years and had never seen or even heard of the JLTVs until one year ago when I returned from deployment and saw them everywhere on Fort Hood. It was crazy.

400k, like a house, for a troop transporter is a somewhat horrendous price. These vehicles should be considered special force/purpose vehicles more than anything. There is no way to use such a vehicles as a main troop transporter in a potential full scale war.
So you’re putting a price on human life? You don’t think the people on the front lines deserve adequate protection? It’s better than politicians lining their pockets.. plus it’s not supposed to completely replace, it only add to combat capabilities not limited to only SF.
@@bravolegacy8673 Well, sir, you formulated questions but these seem to be rhetoric so it seems to me as if you interprete some things into my comment that I didn't say nor meant. Believe me, I would love the idea that every military personel who is operating in the near east could drive in these vehicles. Because these are small scale military operations this is somewhat viable. I don't think, however, that it is viable to only concentrate on assymetric forms of warware because the main purpose is still to be able to defend your country in case of a full scale war. Imagine the USA would get into a war with some greater power, let god prevent this. Then you would have well less than 1% of your ground troops riding around in these vehicles because they have a cost of a freaking house. So if at all, it is not me putting a price on the lifes of people but the producers of these vehicles who think it is OK to demand 400k for a single vehicle. This is not the definition of an armys main vehicle and this is what it's about as far as I understood.
@@martinmartin6300 understandable, but remember it’s not meant to replace ,simply adds to combat capabilities. The national guard won’t need these if war reaches home because the Humvee is more than suitable for domestic operations. the $400k vehicles are made to deflect the blast of an explosive from below, so they have their role and probably won’t be used outside of that too often due to outside factors etc. if a greater enemy is able to inflict damage on our land then explosives will be coming from above, meaning you need quantity over quality and more focus on air and space superiority is my thought on the topic.

HUMVEEs have been one of the most successful programs in military history, much maligned for doing things they were never designed for, but tough and got a lot of troops back in one piece after being all shot up. We have a complete wall in the plant covered with letters from soldiers and their families thanking the workers for getting their sons and daughters home safely. The workers had their own sons and daughters over there in Iraq and Afghanistan so they were more than concerned about providing them the best built truck they could. Were they the perfect truck - of course not, but they were pretty damned good compared to anything else that was out there at the time.

Some of us are old enough to remember when the previous iconic workhorse, was replaced by the Hummer.
