A little bit of advice for anyone thinking about trying this. If you want to make the hammering a ton easier, i'd suggest using something like a propane torch to heat up the quarter while you're hammering. This will make the hammering process much easier and will also prevent cracking in the metal and will remove all stresses in the metal if you let it air cool. Hope i made someones life easier. :)
Cool video! Next time drill out a hole dead center in the quarter first, then get an 8-10" piece of 1/4" all-thread like used in construction or a really long bolt at Ace Hardware. Then put a nut on both sides of the quarter and tighten it up. You will be able to roll the quarter easily by rolling the bolt between ur thumb and finger and hammer away without ur fingers getting in the way. Should speed up the process. You could even heat the quarter intermittently to soften it up like a blacksmith does to work the metal more easily. Work smarter, not harder.
After you drill the hole try putting it on a bolt and and tighten it down with a nut and then put it in a drill use a file and sand paper to make it smooth it will make it have a mirror finish if you go up to a nice fine sandpaper thats how I make my rings
If you’re planning on making these types of rings out of clad (Nickle/Copper) quarters, you should be aware of the health/lung hazards and take proper precautions to protect yourself. The fumes from annealing nickel are carcinogenic. I was making quarter rings and decided to stop after discovering this. After only a month or so of making quarter rings, I was seeing the signs of pneumonitis (inflammation of lung tissue) - yikes! Here is a good resource for most materials and the hazards the jeweler may expose themselves to while working with that metal: www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/metal_safety.htm
coastalos That doesn't sound good. I guess I'll have to be careful if I make any more of these rings. I remember my sinuses were really congested after polishing it. XD
why do you sound so young, but your hands look like they 40 years old? a ligit question, do you work alot? or is it a condition?
+David Telford Well I am pretty young. I was 18 when I made this video. I'm almost 20 now. LOL I've never had anyone date my hands! And yeah I do a lot with my hands. I've built a log cabin, enjoy gardening, and build all kinds of stuff in my work shop. I don't sit around... well I guess I am right now... LOL Thank you!
David Telford Dude your hands are fine. They don't look old or haggard. Idk why all of these moronic children seem to care of the condition of your mits are in a DIY video. Yes sometimes peoples hands do get dirty when you make things. They should take a look at car mechanics hands. DAMN! Their hands make yours look like techie hands. Buttered and smooth! :)
what if we dont have a dremel or what ever its called

+Itsyaboy Thebladesmith I'm 20 now. But I think I was 17 or 18 when I made this video.
+Makerj101 Its the enthusiasm that makes you sound young! :)

I'm too lazy to make that make me one. For $4 only
Is this illegal
People are saying this is illegal. It's not like a cop is gonna come to your door and arrest you for hammering a quarter. Oh my doorbell just rang be right back.
VideosByKelsi Hahaha yeah I know. It would be some what illegal if I was selling them as a business. But I don't see the harm in doing this. And I just heard my doorbell ring too! :P Hahaha
Makerj101 It's not illegal to make and sell jerker made from money. It's illegal to modify or counterfeit legal tender with the intent to pass it off as tender of different (usually higher) value or commit other fraudulent acts. This includes practices such as bleaching bills and rrprinting them with higher values. What you are doing is fine and quite a few people make money making coin jewelry.
TheWelderJDF I mean companies make money with those penny smashers. What about melting money down for scrap metal? Would that be illegal?
It's not illeagle. It's only illeagle if you make it into a higher value coin..thats know as fraud. Fencekid has a video explaining about that so if your still wonder go check out his videos.
cool
Garrett was Here
problem is, a gentle squeeze can deform the ring quite easily
