    A little bit of advice for anyone thinking about trying this. If you want to make the hammering a ton easier, i'd suggest using something like a propane torch to heat up the quarter while you're hammering. This will make the hammering process much easier and will also prevent cracking in the metal and will remove all stresses in the metal if you let it air cool. Hope i made someones life easier. :)

    Cool video! Next time drill out a hole dead center in the quarter first, then get an 8-10" piece of 1/4" all-thread like used in construction or a really long bolt at Ace Hardware. Then put a nut on both sides of the quarter and tighten it up. You will be able to roll the quarter easily by rolling the bolt between ur thumb and finger and hammer away without ur fingers getting in the way. Should speed up the process. You could even heat the quarter intermittently to soften it up like a blacksmith does to work the metal more easily. Work smarter, not harder.

    If you’re planning on making these types of rings out of clad (Nickle/Copper) quarters, you should be aware of the health/lung hazards and take proper precautions to protect yourself.
    The fumes from annealing nickel are carcinogenic. I was making quarter rings and decided to stop after discovering this. After only a month or so of making quarter rings, I was seeing the signs of pneumonitis (inflammation of lung tissue) - yikes!
    Here is a good resource for most materials and the hazards the jeweler may expose themselves to while working with that metal: www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/metal_safety.htm

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  9 років тому +3

      coastalos That doesn't sound good. I guess I'll have to be careful if I make any more of these rings. I remember my sinuses were really congested after polishing it. I'm guessing that was probably from the nickel. I'll be sure to use a fan for good ventilation if I make these again. I guess it's not the best idea to wear these rings either because they talk about nickels being bad in that document.
      Thank you for letting me know.

    All quarters before 1964 were made of 90% silver, so pretty much sterling silver. If you plan to make a ring out of one you might as well try to find or buy one before 1964, as it will make it more valuable and pretty since silver is very shiny.

      For a forge style heater, you could do this www.rmcybernetics.com/shop/image/cache/data/induction-heater-coil-CT400-top-800x600.jpg
      they use pipe so it can be water cooled. But if you want to heat metal past curie point its really complicated! You need a 90 degree lead phase sensor that adjusts the phase as the induction changes as curie point is reached.
      google "how to heat past Curie point with induction" and you will see... Not going to happen with a ZVS
      But to boil a pot of water with a pancake, thats not a problem. You could try something like this with thick apliance lead Bifillar Pancake, How To Wind a coil for Simple Wireless Electricity Transfer.
      Although it might pay to go thicker. It also might pay to do a proper bifilar pancake. In my version, you get one wire on top, and one on bottom. 2 layers of coil total. a proper Tesla bifilar has one layer with two coils. Like this jnaudin.free.fr/gegene/images/Dscf5731.jpg If you try and do that with duel core it gets tangled fast. the outside wire is slightly longer in each turns. So if they are joined it wants to twist up.
      Here is a single filar induction stove coil. i00.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/805/732/107/107732805_319.jpg
      as you can see, its designed to handle a lot of current without getting hot enough to melt insulation.
      Tesla style bifilar could be hooked directly up to ZVS though.
      Would also be fantastic for wireless electricity experiments. Like a turbo charged SWES (Simple wireless electricity system)
      Which is what put ZVS on my to do list in the first place.

      Sledge hammer would deform it too fast. You have to work on flattening it out slowly or it will not turn out. And you could use a file but it would take a lot longer than the dremal tool. Thank you!

      I'm arriving late on this post, but hey it might help. You can heat the quarter up in a candle until its glowing and let it air cool which will soften it. Do this 3 times, then try whacking it. If you still dont make much progress, hit a tad harder ;)
      After the ring is made, heat it up and let it cool 3 times again, then heat it up and dunk it in water. That will make the ring hard and scratch resistant.

    • @PTMOFF
      @PTMOFF 8 років тому +1

      Little late on this, but air cooling cooling only normalizes steel. For quarters, as they are copper and nickel, and this goes for silver and gold as well, heating them up to a cherry red to orange and then dunking them in water anneals them, in turn making them harder. Quenching in water only hardens steel that have a significant amount of carbon in them, IE; 5160, 1095, etc...

Yes sometimes peoples hands do get dirty when you make things. They should take a look at car mechanics hands. DAMN! Their hands make yours look like techie hands. Buttered and smooth! :)

      Makerj101 It's not illegal to make and sell jerker made from money. It's illegal to modify or counterfeit legal tender with the intent to pass it off as tender of different (usually higher) value or commit other fraudulent acts. This includes practices such as bleaching bills and rrprinting them with higher values. What you are doing is fine and quite a few people make money making coin jewelry.

    • @makerj101

    • @coltoncostin3522
