- A thief stole my $ 6 000 bike (E-MTB) not even a minute before I got back to my bike. I had an AirTag hidden on my bike and when I directly opened the Find My app on my iPhone to see the AirTag and my bike was, I was still connected to it!
Will I be able to find my bike so I can recover it?

Great job of finding your e-bike back! I confronted the 2 masked thieves who were attempting to cut the d-lock, but they threatened me with a portable angle grinder and stole my key to the lock. I immediately called the police who asked if I wanted to make a statement (WTF?) and they would send police to take a statement maybe 1 hour later. This was on front of a busy supermarket, early evening, well lit, hundreds of witnesses, surveillance cameras on buildings and vehicles, few minutes away from multiple police stations nearby. 15 minutes after the theft, the airtag i placed under the seat was destroyed. (London, UK)

@@MK-Tech correct, never got the 2 day old £3000 e-bike back, which i used for work (food delivery). Police could't care less, didn't even send a copy of the statement (which i'd need for the insurance if i had one) eventhough they said they would send an email copy, didn't leave their name card or contact for me to ask for any followup. I was too distraught at the time to think clearly not only because of loosing something so expensive but also because the thiefs was willing to kill me with an angle grinder to steal my bike.
Glad that you got your bike back and the thief is in prison and kudos for your awesome detective work to locate your bike and document the whole process on youtube!
Your first mistake was placing the airtag in such an obvious place. You have to take the time make it part of the bike even if you have to dismantle the bike to do it. The battery lasts well over a year so you won’t have to replace it for a long while. And always hide two.

The problem with air tags is that the more they are obscured by plastic and particularly metal, their range is diminished.

Hello Mats, I retrieved my stolen bike also with an AirTag, in Belgium, 3 weeks after it was stolen!
I got notified at night it was 15 min from home. I went there at 4:00 AM, searched for it but could not spot it. Then I called the police and together we tried to pick his signal (I also had to demo the system with another AirTag on my keys because the police did not know about the device). 30 min later I finally spotted it 80 cm behind a house door. Then the police agreed to do a house search and found it immediately. It was a electric foldable bike from Decathlon (worth 800 EUR). Seems the guy bought it the day before. Investigation is ongoing. My secret: I had 2 AirTags on the bike. One the thief found and got rid of... the other one... he had no clue there was a second one :-)
Also probably the thief did not notice beeps from the second one since it was in the bike frame (but also much harder to pick his signal for me, only 1,5 m away). I was lucky it was parked right behind the door. And the thief probably did not have an iPhone either.
Now I'm putting 2 AirTags on all of my family bikes ;-)
Could maybe soundproof one and only have one in the frame
Definitely always hide two. They are only $29 and once the first one is found the thief will let their guard down and think the coast is clear.

There are some videos on UA-cam that detail how to modify the airtag so it doesn't make a sound. If it doesn't beep then the thief can't hear it. You can still locate the tag.
Glad you got your bike back. Can you not disable the bleeping sound on the air tag?.

FIRST thing you do if you want to use an Airtag as anti theft device is BREAK OUT THE SPEAKER...NO MORE BEEPING..even if the thief has iPhone he will be alerted that there is an Airtag ( as soon as he reaches the place marked "home" on his iPhone, NOT RIGHT AWAY!) around but cant play the sound to locate it.. by then at least you already know where you should start looking. Glad that you got your bike back
The new firmware update even allows a person who gets this notification to use precision locating to find an airtag now. So taking out the speaker won’t do much. Just know if your item gets stolen you have about 24 hours to track it down before it alerts the thief. Here in NYC that’s not a problem because you’ll get a new location every 5 minutes no matter the time.

Great work! I'm very glad you located and took bavk possession of your bike. My electric bike was stolen 3 weeks ago while I was inside the grocery store. The thief cut the chain with an angle grinder. But I tracked my bike using the hidden Samsung SmartTag Plus and 1 hour and 20 minutes later I found it in front of the community center at a park across town and I took back possession of my bike and rode it back home. I was wearing my body camera the entire time. I uploaded the video footage to one of my other UA-cam channels and designated them "unlisted" so I can pick and choose who I want to have access to the videos. It's a six-part series since that's how the body camera partitions the files. Please let me know if you want to watch it. I highly recommend the Samsung SmartTag over the Apple Airtags because they're nearly as accurate as real-time GPS and have assignable button functionality.
How is the law and regulation in Sweden about search warrants? I’m told here in Denmark, the police will refuse to search an apartment based on solely a GPS or bluetooth signal. Did the thief fold when he was confronted? Or how did you enter the apartment?
I’m actually very familiar with this kind of law. Any to get a search warrant in Sweden with the purpose of searching for item / items that can be seized (etc) the degree of suspicion is actually set very low. In Swedish the word that is used is “anledning att anta”. So a gps position is way more than you need.
I know that the law in our neighbour countries are usually similar so I actually have a very hard time to believe that it should not be enough. I believe what you heard is based on “someone that heard” and not from the danish law book.

where did you mount the airtag?
I keep one in my truck. My wife used it to help her friend and her friends phone alerted her to the AirTag. If there was at least a small delay in notification that you were being potentially tracked then it would give us the opportunity to find our items. I’ve had my expensive bikes stolen a few times so I know the horror you must have felt. I’m disappointed you didn’t get the thief but if I had to guess he probably thought someone stole it from him/her. A happy ending though. Thanks for sharing.

You can remove the speaker from the air tag. Remove the battery, then remove the white plastic cover. To will need a Stanley’s knife blade to pop the clips holding it in-place. The speaker is held in place with a magnetically.

I just installed AirTag to my expensive eBike for this very reason, tracking in the event of loss.
After playing around with the tag, I realized that you confirmed my theory that It's not always going to be a straight forward find.
In your case it was your great! detective work that also helped.
Would have been much easer to recover on a single story building.
In your case the snow actually helped by soiling the floors.
I was not aware that these tags let the thief know that they are being tracked.
In which case they can use their iPhone in order to play a beeping sound, thus helping then find the AirTag's location on your bike.
Now I've just learned how to remove the speaker from the AirTag on UA-cam (super easy), making it a bit harder to find the device within the bike.
If anything It buys you a little extra time, while the thief is trying to find the AirTag and dismantling the bike in order to get to it.
Disappointed that these tags do notify the bad guy that he's being tracked.
I guess Apple does not what people to use these tags for stalking or tracking people.

I'm now looking for ways to hide the AirTag in an area of the bike that would be extremely hard to access for a thief.
It's got to be an area were me can access the battery every year.

I just got my electric scooter back thanks to my AirTag! I tracked it to the thief's house and saw him taking it inside, the right moment at the right time. Called the police after an initial report that lead to nothing, but they did take action this time when I tell them as a witness I saw him, they questioned him and basically they could tell he had it, and retrieved my $800 scooter and took the guy in handcuffs.

Omg from being devastated that my bike was gone, till that excitement when I got a position next morning and realized that I actually, maybe, was going to find my bike again was stressful and exciting at the same time.
Great job BUT, I would never leave my bike alone even going into a restroom. I have taken my $1,000 bike into the restroom. And my bicycle is 30yrs old. I was on the boardwalk in the states in New Jersey, I lock it to the rail while having breakfast outside in full view. And guess what, teenager was scoping it, looking at the lock, then I said hello! He was thinking of taking my head light off.

1:28 can’t you just remove the speaker from the AirTag? Like open it up and then physically remove it. It’s annoying that it alerts you if you have an iPhone or the android app, it’ll tell you something’s been tracking you which is both good and bad because if you’re being tracked, that’s good to know but if you’re a thief, not as good for us but good for the thieves

Sorry, but I am also new to this technology and bought an airtag for the first time this week, so my question may seem a bit stupid. Suppose the thief has an iPhone, will the thief not receive a notification that an airtag is close by? Or does this only happen if you report the airtag with the product as lost? I hope for your response and it's great that you found the bike..

My thoughts exactly. Me personally, I’m not calling the police. I’m taking my bike back any way possible once I know where it is. And if it’s inside your apartment, I’ll calmly and patiently post up right outside your door until you come out with the bike, probably will even chat you up not letting you know I know. Then I’ll just snatch it from you and see what you wanna do next

I'm not sure if they updated the firmware or the Find My app as of 3/31/2022 but the Airtag immediately lets the nearest iPhone user know they are being tracked. I put a speakerless Airtag on my wife's bicycle as a theft deterrent but when she went out for a ride, she got 5 notifications in an hour. Kind of useless at this point.
It makes the whole thing less useful indeed, but they thief still will need to locate the AirTag to disable it. Without the speaker / magnet, this will be significantly more difficult / take more time.
AirTags were NEVER meant to prevent theft. They were meant to located lost items. So if you’re using them to help you in a theft situation, it’s a race against time before the their is notified. Even removing the speaker is pointless because the thief will still get a notification and the latest firmware update apple pushed out will allow that person to even use precision locating to find it. So it’s difficult on a bike unless you dismantle the bike and bury it inside the frame. That will only buy you some time. Something like a backpack, forget about it, you might have a few hours tops to find it or so long to that backpack. Now in a car, you’re golden because you can stash that tag so deep that even with precision locating it will be difficult if impossible to find.
