I think there are enough photographers out there who value gear that offers professional standards without breaking their backs or bank accounts to make MFT a profitable format. MFT is never going to be "better" than full-frame anymore than a Mazda Miata is going to be better than a Corvette but, if you check, I think you'll find there are just as many or more Miata's racing on weekends than Corvette's and their drivers are probably have just as much fun. MFT is very underrated and well worth the consideration of wildlife photographers looking to do "serious" work.

Most people are happy with cellphone cameras. Those interested in photography / videography are a diminishing share and this makes returns on R&D more difficult. Olympus gave up, and their consumer business got picked up by a group that want to squeeze profits from the system. It’s unlikely that OM System will produce anything particularly ground-breaking that costs a lot in R&D terms.
(The OM-1 was an old Olympus creation, and shows their fixation on still photography.)

@@boggisthecat You may be right. If MFT has a future it is probably in the realm of light, mostly less expensive kit that is good enough for professionals to use. I used full-frame gear for most of my 40+ years as a newspaper photographer. A few years before retiring we were required to shoot videos as well as stills and rather than try to shoot videos on my cellphone, while trying to shoot stills with my Nikon D700, I eventually found the Leica V-Lux 114. It allowed me to shoot video and stills, even at the same time, on its one-inch sensor for daylight and general assignments. I could also bypass my laptop and ship images from the 114 (Leica's version of the Lumix FZ1000) directly to my cellphone and on to my paper and our website. Traveling light with a single camera that had a 25-800mm reach was amazing! The 114 convinced me to try the Lumix G9 and 100-400 (200-800mm in 35mm speak) and I haven't been disappointed. The reach of that lens and its sharpness are surprising. What sold me on the G9 was the same thing that sold me on the 114, traveling light with a quality and very versatile tool. No, the G9 is not a Nikon Z9 or a Sony A1 but I'm not a Mark Smith or Steve Perry and, by taking time to get to know my camera, I've been able to get sharp photos of diving terns come shooting out of the water with their catch and black skimmers skimming, two of my toughest subjects. I hope MFT will be around for many years by exploiting its unique niche of being light on a photographer's back and bank account while providing excellent value and features. Stafford's channel has shown that amazing work can be done with bridge cameras and other relatively modest equipment if as much time is spent improving the photographer as is generally spent chasing expensive gear.

I agree with what you write.
In my case, I went from 135 format film (low-end Canon EOS system) to the Olympus FourThirds system. Eventually I worked up to using the E-5 and 50-200 SWD for most of what I was shooting. A good lens is more important than the body, once you get used to the body. Micro FourThirds was a slower transition, and I only have the E-M1 (‘mark I’), 45 mm 1.8, and 12-40 (mark I) that is native to MFT. I have tried the 50-200 SWD (and teleconverters, which I picked up quite reasonably priced second-hand) on the E-M1, but it’s not as good handling as on the E-5.
I am considering either the OM-1 ‘mark I’ or mark II. The price difference is quite large now that the ‘mark I’ is reduced. The simplified AF system on the mark II is of most interest to me - much of the rest of the increased capabilities are for processes that I have never used, so would likely be of little use without some extensive retraining. Being able to reliably nail focus using longer lenses (the 50-200 SWD) without having to recompose would be very useful. I mostly shoot airsoft, which is quite difficult due to how it is played. Not quite as bad as shooting birds, but fairly close. The options for landscape shooting that these newer bodies offer is also appealing. If you carry the gear for a long time then you appreciate the weight differences.
Pricing is starting to look uncompetitive, though. The OM-1 bodies (new and old) are the same cost as a 135 format system, and you have less light-gathering potential. Lenses at the wide end are comparable, except you have a wider selection for some 135 systems. Long lenses are where MFT still has an edge, but the pricing on the 150-600 is out of step - hopefully not an indication of the future trend. Weight of each system in the later case is a wash, pretty much.
As to the general market trends for photography: IMO, they should be releasing something like the E-PL body with cheaper wide-angle lenses. People are used to fixed lenses from phone cameras now, so they would be more accepting of fixed-angle lenses with a small MFT setup. Film and instant-film cameras have made a comeback, so OM Systems ought to be looking at that space.

I bought an Olympus EM-5 in 2013, absolutely loved it, but when I came to upgrade 3 years ago, bought a Nikon Z5, these 'budget' FF cameras from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic were cheaper than Olympus EM-1 iii's and only 2 or 3 hundred dollars more than the latest EM-5's, and they're not much bigger physically.
I'm mainly a stills photographer, so image quality is the number one priority, so why would I, as an Olympus fanboy, let alone anyone else, consider putting up with slightly less low light and dynamic range performance, for not any significant, or no, financial gain.
Yes, there's the weight factor, with FF lenses being bigger and heavier, but I have 6 old 4 thirds lenses, that I adapt, which are relatively big compared to m4/3 lenses, so it hasn't been an issue for me.
This is what, I think, is going to kill m34, probably ASP-C as well, especially with phones getting better and better.

I'm an amateur bird and insect photographer and I can't see any scenario where I'd either want or need a 1200mm FF fov lens. I struggle with keeping my shutter speeds up (IS doesn't slow down my subjects) and ISO down. I love the 300 f/4 and and am fine with the 100-400, but I need more light, not more 'reach'. They could probably get more of my money with something close to a 350mm f/4 with a built in matched 1.4x TC non pro lens for somewhere near the price of this thing.

I was unhappy with Olympus 100-400mm, it was too slow. Owning the 150-400 is well beyond any pipe dream given the cost. Using the 300mm f4 being a prime, it is limited to zooming with your feet. The only hope for a zoom, long lens is the 150-600. But I wish it could have been a constant f4.

I like the example photography I've seen from this lens, very much. I like the lightness/compactness of Micro Four Thirds; and from what I can tell, the OM1 II is an excellent all-round pro camera (while acknowledging, as we must, that all good designs are a bundle of compromises & trade-offs). Logically, though, I can't say weight is an airtight argument for the 150-600 + OM-1 II _combination._ My other reservation is that OM Systems haven't yet demonstrated any ability to create a new pro body, going forward. And we can't know if a higher res m43 sensor will ever appear - nor what resolution will seem adequate to us in, say, 2030 or later. All I can say is: I'd love to own this camera and lens, and for the moment at least, would enjoy both the use of them, and their current image quality.

Even at 2kg, I reckon this lens will be extremely popular. Yes the Sigma design will annoy a lot of people with the price hike but you can't get this specs anywhere else. OM system has modified it and put Sync IS at 6ev for the long end, if that's true and 1200 at 6 EV, that's even better than the 150-400 pro because with the built in teleconverter, I don't think it will have 6 EV anymore. It has better weather sealing than the Sigma and it works with the two MC teleconverter, you are not getting these features with the Sigma lens alone and you can to 1200mm with m43 instead of a crop in 900mm with either APSC bodies or full frame. OM system knows it and that's why it charge us the premium

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  6 місяців тому +1

Exactly, yep you have to look at the specs and the true advantage of the sensor size and lens. Even thou it is not optimized it still has a reach advantage over most other lenses. The other lens that kind of compares is the canon 200-800 with an aps-c body.

The LiveND and LiveGND are not targeted at wildlife photographers. In their presentations yesterday they did make it clear they had very specific target markets - the outdoors photographer, making sense of their small cameras and lenses, image stabilisation and weather-sealing, which is smart. They included landscape and 'adventure' photographers in that. But let's face it, MFT sensors are not going to compete against Sony in live events or sport photography, or Fujifilm in the photojournalism or street photography sector of the market, etc. so there isn't much point them wasting time and energy wooing those markets until they can firmly reestablish themselves. The 150-600 is interesting for people who want the reach but don't mind the price and size. The OM1ii on the other hand is a massive disappointment, atleast for me. Sure, it built on some of the strengths of the OM1 but addressed none of the shortcomings. And most of these improvements are software. Considering that the hardware is pretty much exactly the same except for the larger buffer and possibly improved image stabilization, most of the upgrades can be brought to the OM1 with a firmware update. And it is now $200 more than the OM1, making it $500 more than the G9ii, which makes absolutely no sense.
I sincerely hope they're in it for the long run and not to just make a quick buck off existing users.

My guess is the OM1 ii will see a price reduction in a 6 to 12 months. Next christmas you should be able to buy it for the current om1 price. The older OM1 will see a price reduction as well kind of like the G9 vs the G9ii. The g9 is only $900 and is a great camera for the price. I am not sure how much the OM1 will come down in price. I think it be a nice if they sold if for like $1499.99 but we will see where their positions are. Right now I think they are really trying to make this company profitable so great deals are probably something we will not see outside what they offer in certain times of the year. Bear in mind, though it may be based on the same blueprint, it is not the same lens. Aside the obvious new mount to fit on MFT cameras and new circuitry to communicate in the same language as Olympus and OM System cameras, it will also have a new rear element to fit the MC-14 and MC-20 specifically and will be refined to produce a lwph consistent with MFT sensors (MFT lenses need to be much sharper than lenses for larger sensor areas to resolve the same information onto a smaller projection area). They have saved a cost by starting with a lens that already exists, but it is far from simply a rebadged lens.

Image stabilization is good enough for me, no complaints. It's heavy and long, but with a cheap Altura shoulder sling, I've carried my 6-pound kit all day without discomfort. I've also carried it on four-mile nature walks, where the kit does great on mid-macros, as well as bringing out bird details stunningly. With the 2x crop factor on the OM body, it actually may be too telephoto for some sports situations, but in nature, that reach will be handy. The whingers and whiners come out of the woodwork every time Olympus, now OMS, bring out a new product. Most of them have no intention of purchasing any of the products, but they can't help themselves, they have to whine on and on. The way they go on, you'd think OMS is threatening to send the boys round if they don't purchase the new product. It's too expensive for M43, it's too heavy for M43, it's not fast enough (most would not even notice the difference between f4 and f5.6, or f5.6 and f6.3), it's only a 20MP sensor, why hasn't it got a 25MP sensor - like they would be able to tell the difference in a blind test. As for the packaging, its all about recycling. Strangely, most people binned their lovely black Olympus packaging. Take a look at the second hand market and you will notice most products do not have their original packaging. And guess what, when you trade your old gear in, the retailer does not care if you have kept the packaging or not.

I was using Olympus cameras and lenses since the 1970s and of course also went into 43 and m43 (besides many other systems like Nikon, Leica, Canon,...)
After the debacle (I call it that way) with the EM1III (only rebranded EM1II) and the EM1X (far too large for m43) I finally left this system 3 years ago.
Meanwhile I am pretty much settled with Leica and some of the most wonderful M lenses I acquired over the years.
    BUT
I am missing Olympus (now OM System) as a second small and lightweight system and really think to move back in with their newly introduced OM-1 MarkII.
And guess what, I would probably buy this 150-600 in a heartbeat, because it is so much more affordable and available than their 150-400.
So yes from my side for that strategy of OM System 👍👍👍

Man oh man that price tag is a hard pill to swallow. It's an external zoom too, so it can't really be that well sealed. Weight-wise I think it's not surprising. I've learned a tiny bit more about optics recently, and my understanding is that when the focal length is significantly larger than the image projection circle (probably around 5x), the aperture (entrance pupil) is really just determined by the size of the front element, which will be the limiting factor for weight. So in that regard a 600/F6.3 zoom is going to be about the same size and weight regardless of FF or MFT.
Interestingly, Nikon's 180-600 is an internal zoom and a bit lighter, and about $1K cheaper? That's a bit crazy to me. Speaking of Nikon lens, that 600/F6.3 PF is only 1.4KG, and the 300/F4 PF is only 0.75KG. In comparison, then olympus 300/F4 is 1.2KG. I know that MFT pixel density is more demanding on the resolution of the lens, and that 600 PF is really expensive, but those weight savings, wow.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish we can get Nikon lens on MFT natively🤣 I have the luxury of not being invested into any systems yet and I can just wait and see. In the meantime, the P950 will keep me occupied for the spring migratory season at least.

I love the combo of EM-1II and Lumix 100-300 in my bike panier bag. Will never consider buying OM150-600 at this price point for this noisy sensor. To be honest this price is offensive. OM150-400 is something that I'd really love to use, but if the price was 4000 not 7000. Basically with every other company I can find something that can give me similar results in similar size at half price of OM expensive toys, which is not promising for OM.

I have 2 points. First, I don’t believe the Sigma is up to the sharpness I have come to love about Olympus (OM). If it is at least as sharp as the 100-400 then ok. Wait and see I guess. Second, many of M43 shoot the system because of the reduced equipment size and weight. Especially when it comes to lenses. If the 150-600 is just rebranded with some minor changes but basically the same BIG and HEAVY lens, what’s the point? I may as well switch to a 1.6 or FF sensor for less money. I will have to see some very exceptional reviews before I purchase the 150-600. I’ll stick to my 300/f4 pro with the 1.4 converter.

It's nice to read a comment with common sense... At 5100 dollars we have a 20 million pixels with a full frame lens for an overall weight of 2576 grams... For example at 4698 dollars we have a Canon R6 mark II + RF200-800 + Extender 1.4. Only 287 grams more and cheaper by 400 dollars...the om1 was developed by the former owners of Olympus JID bought Olympus but did not buy the name! Obviously they are just rebadging and changing 2 or 3 little things here and there we will see very quickly if they are really capable of innovating...JIP is an investment fund you just have to see what they have made during the purchase of VAIO from Sony in 2014 to have a very different opinion from that offered here...

Hello Stafford Fuhs ! a lot of people are saying it...personally I don't know and I don't hope so! Because Olympus has a very interesting history punctuated by numerous innovations and skills recognized worldwide! Among other things, an exceptional ability to stabilize their camera, optical quality and compactness and lightness with the 150-400 F4.5 TC 1.25 certainly at a very high price but meanwhile others are buying 500F4 or 600F4.. If OM System disappears, micro 4/3 may disappear! there will be more jobs lost... I cross my fingers that this brand accepts its destiny: to innovate, innovate and always innovate with the deepest respect for its consumers and therefore for the micro 4/3 market! Panasonic has just shown that you can put a 25 million sensor on micro 4/3! innovation is always possible! Each brand of device deserves to be defended; this competition is healthy for the market and for consumers! I stand with all my friends who are equipped with Olympus and who hope that OM System will continue by listening to its customers!@@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
