    What part of the country are you located in? You have gorgeous mature bucks. Also, how far was that tall brush you set up at from the scrape you pointed at? I’m sure you know this, but if not, those scrapes are used as urination points between bucks and does for the rut. Great video!

      Hey thanks for watching. They were about 40 yards or so within bow range but in a non hunting area. There be no way they be that relaxed in a normal hunting area in Nebraska. The nice thing is good photography is actually more challenging than bow hunting because of all the things you need and most importantly you need time.

    This was a pretty even handed comparison, which one exception -- which you clearly pointed out. There is a substantial difference in handling, ISO performance, and image stabilization, etc. when using the OM-1 Mkll vs the small, lower tier OM-5 -- especially when using a lens like the 150-600mm. As you correctly pointed out, each system has its advantages and disadvantages, and ultimately, it boils down to which system serves the photographer's needs best. I've gone the m4/3's route, because I love the portability of the system vs max image quality -- which is almost nil without pixel peeping. I have grand kids and I can stick a ridiculously lightweight, high optical quality lens on my OM-1 Mkll and get amazing candids and portraits -- there are just so many good, reasonable cost lens options between OM and Panasonic. My Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens is a great portrait lens, and weighs a mere 4 oz.. Anyway, thanks for the candid comparison.

    Thanks, I got a P950 as an addition to my FF for wildlife because of the distance. You cant always get close enough to get the subject in the frame. I find your setting helpful especially as I usually use M mode and moving to A mode works well for me. I cant the close up with my full frame but I can with the P950 as I said. The only drawback which you state is the shutter release is delayed and as you say it becomes a game of numbers. I was going m43 but I might not bother. I might even sell my ff......... Its a lazy mans way to shoot.

    Sigma dont realy care. Their main business is selling lenses. R&D money were blown away so no FF foveon sensor is insight. It might be that the quattro were last foveons ever made. Sigma officials keep repeating that Sigma ended partnership with the old foveon sensor manufacturer, and they are looking for the new one. Seems that no one can make their sensor for a competitive price . No wonder, all other sensor technologies and sensor manufacturers were crushed by sony. My best bet would be,-if we are lucky - Sigma will bring something out,- on a quattro basis.

    Canon Rumors suggests we'll be getting a R7 Mark 2 at the end of next year. Couple that with a Canon 100-500mm zoom and that should make another great light-weight combo, hopefully with much improved ergonomics over the current R7, giving you the FF reach of a 800mm lens.

    Thanks for doing this one! I do think that with some skill that a good bird photographer can minimize the differences between the systems. I never noticed a big difference in my photos with a change in sensor size. I started shooting birds with a Sony RX10 IV with a 1” sensor. Then I went to the venerable Panny G9 with the 100-400. Then to Canon R6 with the Sigma Contemporary 150-600 adapted. Then I got the RF 100-500 and the R7 and eventually an R5. then the OM-1 with the 100-400 and then the 300mm F4 with both TCs. I was looking for photos to print from the past few years the other day and I found that I couldn’t tell just by looking at them what system and lens I was using. The biggest improvement IMO came just from my skills getting better over time and many thousands of shots. I am happy with my current gear and while I still have a bit of GAS at times (mainly for the OM 150-400 Pro) I can see myself living with my current gear for quite a while.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE Місяць тому

      Yes, its hard right. Sometimes the difference can be larger but most the time the differences are pretty small an enough that it is doable and worth the small sacrifice being the lens is 1/2 the size or you get some added benefit from using m43 gear. Thanks again for watching.

  • @rreichar1
    @rreichar1 Місяць тому

    Nice video! I have thought about getting the OM 150-600 because I don’t want to tell my wife that I’m spending $7500 for the OM 150-400. I currently shoot with the OM-1 and the 300mm F4 with both TCs depending upon conditions. I also have the Panasonic 100-400 mk1 that I take for birding when I have to fly with my gear. It would be nice to have a longer zoom but I do worry that I might miss a bit of IQ with the zoom. I only shoot RAW these days because of the benefits of noise reduction software. I have gotten some very nice and useable bird pics at 25,600. I use a combination of Topaz Photo AI and DXO Photolab 8 with good results. I do love Canon jpegs though. I pre-ordered the RF 200-800 when it came out but eventually cancelled when I sold off my Canon gear. I did try the OM-1 mk2 but had a few minor AF issues that were really annoying so I returned it.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE Місяць тому

      Yea the 150-600 beats the 300mmf4 with the 2-tc in background blur. I been testing both but there are so many things the 150-600 does correctly that it really tightens the race between aps-c/full frame and the m43. The compression of 600mm really makes image look more full frame vs the other 300 and 400 lenss. It is noticeable. Stay tuned.

    Glad I watched this one. I've postponed my purchase of a g9ii for 6 months and gone for P1000 instead. The main reason was as you explained in the video 50x g9ii reviews in youtube by people who often have only borrowed the camera, not even bought and used it for 3 months expecting me to get exited about bells and whistles. I may well look to Z9 instead (not the z50ii). And yes arrogant is the word. I've seen that in other world beating companies who finally got the message and changed.

As a a bobbyist I was looking for M43 for wildlife That would cost me 3-4 times what I paid for mt P1000.,Quality is good enough. The problem with the camera industry is its always upselling which is fine if you are earning a living but for hobby photographer its a different game. I had a d7200 before and dont I regret selling that one.

It’s not rebranded, its innards are completely redesigned…half the elements have been replaced and upgraded, improved weather sealing, improved lens IS plus SYNC IS for OM cameras, new focusing motors, tighter and smoother zoom action…this isn’t your father’s Sigma Sport lens. Many poorly done reviews, but one of the proper ones is Thomas Eisl. Cheers 🍻

    I used to shoot the original Sigma Sport 150-600 on a D750. Now shoot the Oly 150-400TC on the OM1ii. No comparison in terms of sheer numbers of in-focus birds, and no need for a tripod any more, even at 74 with health issues I can hand-hold at 500mm (1000mm equiv 35mm fov) and always shoot at max aperture (4.5 to =800 and 5.6 beyond). For birds and macro the extra depth of focus is a great advantage. 50fps at 1/4000 sec (1/3200 sec if you want) and 90% plus in sharp focus. The adapted Sigma isn’t in the same league. Do I miss FF for low light - sometimes but DXO just overcomes the issue. 50% crop at 52,00 ISO didn’t get negative comments on a bird site but let’s face it, we always want more, especially a greater option to crop.

      In my opinion the Canon 100-500mm is one of the best zoom lenses ever made. Right now I'm shooting MFT but I'm hoping Canon will upgrade the R7 with a Mark 2 version and give me the same reach I have now with the 100-500mm which is only slightly larger than my current Lumix 100-400mm lens (200-800mm in 35mm terms). I have to admit, though, using MFT spoils you for wanting to travel light.

    the path from APSC to m43 to FF taught me that for wildlife, om1+300f4(+1.4x tc) is an amazing combo rich in features, settings, amazing portability, speed and amazing image sharpness. It also taught me that getting certain wide angle lenses, or fast aperture portrait lenses w m43 is pretty much an unsolvable problem. So m43 is the champion of reach and portability for wildlife with limited(compared to a high tier FF) budget. FF setups dominate other areas of photography, often at much lower prices , which tends to get overlooked. If one wants to cover more use-cases, the combine cost may be different than a cost of a purely wildlife oriented kit. eg by making a switch from om1+300f4 to d810+200-500 I saved up whole bunch of money, gained focal length flexibility, mostly preserved sharpness, got smoother background rendering and also gained a 36mpx 14bit 64-base-iso low-noise sensor that I can use to mount wide angles or portrait lenses onto, which will not cost anything like the famous 1.2 pro lenses by olympus for example, introducing further savings and image quality boost. Of course, I won't walk with it for 5 days straight on my shoulder. now that 1200mm sigma above - is not cheap, is not small/light/portable and is not quality like the 300f4 for example. People love to have a questionably resolving 1200mm long end at their disposal , but it's probably cuz their approach(literally) to wildlife is wrong. The 3000mm nikon camera will probably resolve more details at long distance, if that's all one cares about.

    You talked about balance but didn't mention weight. How do they compare in terms of heft? Also, when packing these combinations, I would imagine that the more compact size of the OM lens would widen your bag options. I'd like to see actual image results with camera corrections turned off. It seems like a lot of modern lenses produce excellent results until you view the unadulterated raw files without in-camera corrections turned on. At that point, distortion, chromatic aberrations and other optical flaws become apparent. While this may not seem like a big deal, I think it can compromise things in some situations.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE Місяць тому

      Ahh I kind of mentioned total weight but they are very very similar. They kind of balance different hope that make sense. I prefer the canon for hand holding unless in confined areas. Yea most lenses have some type of jpeg pipeline that will make them look better. Overall I do not think you will miss much going from one or the other if long reach is what you want.

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHEREI've got the Olympus M.Zuiko 100-400mm and the Canon EF400mm f/5.6 which I use on the EOS R with the Canon adapter. I have to say that Canon lens just seems incredibly heavy and unwieldy. To be fair though, all of these longer lenses tend to be somewhat inconvenient on long hikes and such. As both a landscape and wildlife photographer, I generally find myself making a compromise and deciding either shoot landscapes or wildlife but not both due to the gear requirements. On the plus side, the 40-150mm f/2.8 on the Olympus side gives me excellent results with both. I just have to be stealthy with wildlife.

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE The M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro is literally my all-time favourite lens. It is just so beautifully balanced, easily packable, sharp and versatile. It is ideal for portraits, but also a capable landscape and wildlife lens. It is sharp wide open at f/2.8. Also, what many people fail to recognize with these zooms is how good some of them are at pseudo-macro work. I've got loads of great insect images with this lens. Honestly, the design quality of this lens is what can really make the OM system shine. It combines light weight, compact dimensions, optical exactness, and versatility in one. It is why OM Systems needs to custom design their long zooms specifically for m43rds rather than rejig full-frame offerings from Sigma. I had really hoped for a similar design ethos in the 150-600.

    Total agree! Also LOVE my OLY. 40-150 (80-300mm) f2.8. If you want GREAT COLOUR overall, match a "Panasonic G9II with the 150-600" and you'll be very happy :) Includes pre-burst, multi detect animal AF modes, 8 stop in camera stabilization, and the bonus.... the smoothest 6K footage you've ever seen right out of the camera at 1200mm if you wish.

    I enjoyed this comparison. The Canon 200-800mm makes the "giant" OM 150-600mm look positively petite. The OM 100-400mm would seem to the obvious OM lens for this comparison since it is also a 35mm equivalent 200-800 and I'm wondering why you didn't choose that lens for your comparison. After 40+ years of full-frame shooting the need to shoot video and stills at the same time won me over (before you could do that with DSLR's). But, while I admire full-frame results, it's hard to go back after traveling so light.

      It's not just a 'rebadged Sigma'. It uses some different elements, has IPX1 weather sealing, and the Synch IS function has been added to the lens. The standard Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens offers 4 stops of IS, the OM 150-600mm offers up to 6 stops of Synch IS @600mm -- that is a substantial difference.

    Thanks for sharing these useful results. They show that smaller sensors work fine in many wildlife scenarios. With micro 4/3, I'm finding I need to use digital blurring in maybe 25% of my wildlife photos. The end result is a pleasant degree of separation, for my taste. It often won't match the popular total blur that full-frame produces, but personally, I like to know what is in the background.

    Stafford, thanks for doing this review and talking about the 2x digital converter featured in Olympus and Lumix cameras. I have the original G9 and have found this feature surprisingly useful with my 100-400 Lumix zoom if used with low ISO's and good lighting. Lumix has introduced hybrid zoom on their S9 cameras and I'm hoping this will make it to the G9 Mark 2 and perform something like iZoom did on my Leica V-Lux 4 (Leica's version of the FZ1000) which helped produced some remarkably clear images from that 2x converter paired with that camera's 25-400mm lens and one-inch sensor. I shot full-frame for most of my 40+-year newspaper career but have really come to appreciate the lighter weight of MFT, especially for long wildlife treks. I hope Lumix and OM Systems keep innovating with things, for instance, like digitally enhanced zooms. Perhaps they'll even give us filters to help provide those buttery-smooth backgrounds we still envy from full-frame gear. I hope you'll do more digital converter comparisons.

      Bruce thanks for watching. Yep the G92 i was shocked why they removed it if I am correct. I was like noo man that 2x converter is what seperates out it from every other cameras outside olympus. ahh well. Yep, almost want to make a video on the buttery smooth backdrops that can be done with computational photography. My iphone does it really well, Oly/Panny steal this tech. Fuji had a cool system years ago that would take 1 photo all the way zoomed in then take another photo that you want them merge them. It worked pretty well to get you a full frame look . Anyway, thanks again.
