Enid is awesome! Her nursery is stunning, I could live there lol. I very much wish I could order from her but I live in Vancouver, Canada. Some of the varieties she sells are so unique!
No you don't😎 today it was 92 and so humid you couldn't stay outside very long. May more like July. The month of many showers and I don't mean rain.lol This is Tennesse weather 🍉🍉🍉🍉time
@@willajohnson8577 I'm in the UK and today it's almost 100% humidity but it's only 50f. Good combination :) Not for mould in homes though.... Big problem over here
There are so many rare plants being constantly lost from purposely burning I virgin jungles and secondary jungles in Brazil and Kalimantan in Borneo, I wish more explorers would collect them and grow them to preserve plants that would be lost forever. Plants cannot run away from fires, unlike animals which can mostly escape. There are also selfish gardeners who prefer to keep rare plants to themselves and when rare plants die for whatever reason, no one else has them to continue their existence.
I've literally watched this same episode like 5 times over the past week. It's definitely my favorite. Her wonderful personality, infectious enthusiasm, and genuine love for her collection really comes through on the video. Thanks so much for posting!
I wish a little more time had been spent on the Spiritus Sancti - there are so very few of them in the world and it's such an amazing plant. What a beautiful collection!
Not anymore, they’re in tissue culture- so they’re now being mass produced by the thousands, if not millions now. The caveat that supply is being controlled to maintain high prices, a bit like how diamonds are not particularly rare, but their supply is controlled so demand exceeds the artificially restricted supply, so they can charge more for them
@@fabulously695 I did not know they were being tissue cultured now. Thanks for the knowledge! What you're saying about the pricing is so depressing, but here's hoping that in a few more years that might change too.
everytime there is a terrible storm or in this case hurricane i think of my favorite sellers. praying for enid, paradise found, ecua, and other sellers that have a near and dear place in my heart !!
☁️🌿 now I always try and have a second back-up houseplant.😊 I am having problems growing my cheese vine plants again, they do fine & then they just start shriveling back😭
Also, Summer, you are spoiling us. I started cheering when I saw the "part I" in the title, but then I saw you gave us an episode of almost 20 minutes. Christmas has come early. Thanks! Love you!
The Holy Grail of Plants. The Philodendron spiritus sancti. Wish that y’all would have talked more about this one. It’s such a gorgeous plant. Price tag: $1,450
*12:29** its probably to help bring in pollinators since its longer. Also it can possible spiral in the direction of the hemisphere [ex: southern hem. counterclockwise. northern hem. clockwise]*
By the way, I also found interesting the fact of growing this kind of plants within glass. Maybe you can explain more details about alternative growing methods and how to choose the best? Cheers!
what a small world - i am in the UK and i thought I recognised the name - it's because I supported them when a friend of mine shared the fundraiser for NSE after irma! SO glad to see it looking so lovely again.
. ah, you guys are so lucky in the US cos you can get all these plants from each other - in the uk we are stuck with such lame plants (and we can't 'legally' import plants from other countries :( - i'm so jealous ;)
I recently got a gorgeous Anthurium veitchii from NSE mailed to me recently! Really excited to buy from Enid again! :) Love that you got to tour her space and share with us too! Thank you both so much!
Thank you both, Summer and Enid! Fascinating tour. I have an impetus like Enid's, getting most excited by the strangeness of a plant. Marigolds and roses bring joy, but success with a weirdo is so deeply satisfying!
I wish I could get plants from Enid!! Wow, just WAOW, I just love watching these I learn something new and covet 20 new plants every time ;D thanks again!!! I also kind of love watching you two contemplate the meaning of life at 12:25 hahaha I feel like this is half of my existence, questioning our entire reality based on the physiology of plants and animals LOL someone send help
All these people growing tropical plants like this in a dark corner with almost no light wondering why they aren't producing new leaves. This is why! They need very bright indirect light for the most part. Thousands of Lux, not hundreds
I would love to see Enid's growing facilities but I live in Ca. so it is hard to go there. Thanks for taking us there and seeing her plants and facilities. She has stuff that makes me want to build a 2000 sq. ft. hot house.
Push the task of conservation fro.m botanical gardens to collectors? It's collectors in the West that push species to extension. Poor countries where these plants come from, do not have the laws to prosecute people who collect the snduggle them through customs. Shame on you!
It likely flowers in a coil to prevent other pollinators and things from getting inside. The ghost orchid is like this in a way. The ghost orchid has a very long flower so that only the one type of moth can pollinate it. These coils probably serve a similar purpose.
I think it's Xanthosoma atrovirens / Xanthosoma albomarginata. At first i thought it wasn't this, probably a Xanthosoma panduriforme or might also be a double-leaved Caladium varieties but on a second thought X.albomarginata does sometimes have this weird growth like folds on the leaves that create this multiple pockets look, either front / back
"this is spiritus-sancti . . . " delivered so blase', as if, "here's the rest room." That's the species that Philo lovers would die for! Usually goes for >$1000. :-O
OMG!!!! In this video you mentioned something that made me just sit up and fall out of my chair. You mentioned growth sugars and I have that on my piper plant and then you mentioned that you had a piper plant with the same thing. Mystery solved! Our water here is very hard water, and I mean extreme amounts of salts. So I transport water in a 35 gallon tank in my truck from down the street. I was worried that even though I was doing that, the salts were still collecting along the stems of the piper plant. I don't have to worry any longer. Wonderful videos! Keeping us educated.
This is great, I live in NYC / Brooklyn. The relative humidity in the winter goes down to 3 / 5%. I have collected Ficus species that start growing aerial roots during the humid summer months, but after October it gets dry as the desert. Many Aroids need humidity. The common Monstera deliciosa seems to do well no matter of what. But those variegated Anthuriums died. I grew some bird's nest Anthurium type from seeds I found but sold it as it grew too wide. That one did very well. For me plants and orchids from Mexico (even Yucatan) seem to do best. Plants from Ecuador etc are a lot harder as probably they require constant high humidity and cool nights, while the heat in my apartment in the winter can reach 85 / 90 F coupled with low humidity it is a no no. But I just swithced to LED grow light fixtures and seaweed extract and I noticed crazy root growth. But this is great. I love heat and humidity more than centralized heat and AC.
Hi I really enjoyed watching you on UA-cam. Quick question I have a peace lily actually 2 they're both in humidity rooms, they're both green and still growing but they quit flowering any suggestions for me? The one was flowering and it stopped and start dying back now it's okay. They both get a lot of indirect sunlight.
Those are mostly z11 and up to 13 Tropicals..I didn't spot one that could be grown outdoors in California for example. Not even mildest beach areas in southern cal.
I am busy buying my first house and I want to fill all my garden walls with vertical gardens with these tropical plants, but I live in the Netherlands and it can go below freezing in the winter. Anyone have tips to preserve them outdoor? Maybe certain species?
About 12:40, they ask why would there be a curling? One possible solution is that curl caught the eye of a collector and the mutation advantage is human preference.
Great collection! NSE tropicals nursery has always been an inspiration and looking forward to create a small space with these rare aroids. Veitchii and regale’s prices are skyrocketing in asia and its getting hard to get a hold of one.
She said people were asking if they could sleep in parts of the greenhouse. Okay I'm standing here at the door everybody get behind me and as you come in take a number. Paradise!
my heart skips a beat every time Colombia is mentioned on your episodes! thank you so much for the videos and the plant publicity Summer. really love and admire you and what you do !!
I just watched this video, and you didn’t put up the spelling of the first plant with pink leaves that doesn’t need a lot of water? Could you tell me what that is? Thanks
