Im kinda shy to talk to strangers, so i’d usually research the heck out of the plant and watch tonnes of youtube videos before going out to buy the plant 😅
I do the same but post seeing a plant I like 😅 when I see a plant I like I take a pic of it and the name if available then do lots of research on it before I buy it, or if I really really like it I just buy it bring it home then research it :) I know it's not ideal, but I admit I've done that too
I am so glad you brought out the reality of plants that MOST people do not realize: what you see in the stores was grown in optimum conditions that cannot be duplicated in most peoples homes. People take them home and think they have failed when the plant adjusts to their home conditions and doesn't look nearly as good anymore. ALL plants will look "rough" at some time in one's possession (usually their worst during winter) and we all need to stop thinking that we have failed. Patience is a part of plant ownership and they will adjust/come back for you during the growing seasons. Something you said, tho, made me want to laugh: you said ask the plant center people for help. Unfortunately, that doesn't work where I live: the employees they hire are clueless teens that know less than nothing. They are there to take your money or load things into your car and that's about it. Here, we plant people are on our own. Thank goodness for the internet, lol!
The people at my local plant store dont know much about the plants they sell and when they pretend they do, they often give the wrong information. It makes me really sad that they are only in it for profits/a paycheck and have no real passion for plants. I'd rather just got to Walmart or Lowes where the employees are just as uneducated but they don't bother you or give you the wrong information and the prices aren't inflated as much.
RDR yeah I live in the Midwest and there aren’t really any houseplant stores, you can occasionally get a snake plant here and there but it’s all just flowers and gardening stuff. People there don’t know anything about plants and they drown the plants and it’s horrible. There’s only big box stores like Lowe’s and Walmart where the selection is just as bad, a few succulents with no drainage hole. Yay Michigan😕
Your videos are absolutely amazing! I discovered you from watching the New Yorker video and I am so glad I did. My mother passed away a few weeks ago and I got two plants as a gift. I’ve never owned a plant (besides cacti that I managed to kill) before so I was really nervous to bring them into my apartment. I wanted nothing more than to take care of them in honor of my mother so of course I went to UA-cam and luckily found you and others that have been such a great help! Thanks so much for all of your hard work. I’m excited to be on this new journey! My mother at one point had a room full of plants in our den so I’d like to think she would be proud of me for taking interest in this. I also decided to bring her plants back with me so I can continue to take care of them.
I highly recommend a peace lily to any beginner. It thrives in waterlogged soil and lower light. Mine is probably 10 years old and has unbelievably lush and dark green foliage. And it tells you when it’s ready to have its roots flooded again by drooping it’s leaves.
Checking the roots... makes me think of kicking a car's tyres when shopping 🤣 wouldn't the shop get annoyed? What if the soil all falls out? Great advice but I'd be scared to try that
Thank you for the pep talk regarding the optimum nursery condition plant quality versus our in-home version once the plant is purchased. Especially with a Lipstick plant being the example, since it is one of mine that has given me that exact sort of frustrating, "what am I doing wrong?" moments!
I haven't watched this in a while, I didn't realize how blunt Summer can be. Yet it's good to be upfront on what can be expected on what the plant can become as it adjusts and grows.
Keep doing this videos I'm learning sooo much! And building my confidence with plants I started with cacti and now I stepping up with indoor plants!!! Thank u so much
Summer I love and need your videos! I too often am a plant killer, I don’t want to be but it happens. But you are helping me, so thanks. I’m making better choices of what to buy, and loosing less plants. I think my thumb is getting greener! :) seeing your home so full of plants inspires me.
As someone who just started getting into plants (who has been given multiple plants as gifts by well meaning friends and relatives, and is terrified of killing them) these videos are a life saver! You’re so thorough and good at explaining things, and make me feel so much more confident and excited to be a plant parent!
I learn more about plants on youtube, by watching your videos and some others. The plant shops offer general information, but don't go into depth like watching here. Whatever is on the tag, is what they'll tell you. You do us a great service, Summer! 👍😘 Thank you so much!
I use a slightly bigger cache pot and put leca beads at the bottom, within a few days the extra water evaporates and creates humidity for the plant while not damaging the roots at the base of the pot.
Summer I just want to thank you on behalf of everyone. These videos are incredibly well produced and very informative. We wish all the very best and always looking forward to a new upload.
My Wal-Mart has the bases that match terracotta pots, and they are plastic. Summer, have you ever considered opening your own plant shop/greenhouse? Kippee can be your assistant😊
There are free Light meter apps available on both iOS and Android. Everyone should download these first and measure the light in the spot where they want to keep a plant. Sometimes what we perceive as enough light isn't actually enough for the plant. This helped me tremendously when I first started collecting plants.
I usually keep my plants in a nursery pot and have that in a watertight cover pot but I add a saucer that's upside down between the nursery pot and the cover pot, this way the water drains away from the nursery pot and then as it evaporates it provides a bit of humidity
Absolutely LOVE your 101 series! After 10 years of being scared to own plants (had a devastating spider mite infestation) I've recently gotten back into the swing after being gifted a succulent. It's reignited my passion but I've hopelessly forgotten everything so its a slow process. Every question I had you answered in this video - as well as so many tips that I'd never think to ask. I am subscribed!
LOVE LOVE these series! I just started getting a few plants for the house, and watching these videos gives me the confident to care for my new plants. Thank you.
Ms. Summer, please do a video on efflorescence. Also, isnt it better to remove as much of the old media as possible and repotting into the same/same sized pot it came in? I've had a lot better growth that way than using the old media. Using the old media has a plethora of problems that can cause new people to become discouraged and think they can't keep plants. Media breaks down and can get moldy. The old media/new media causes uneven watering which can cause root loss and dehydration leading the inexperienced grower to water more frequently and thus killing their plant(s) by overwatering.
Thank you for sharing you tips on how to start being a plant parent. I am starting to adopt 4 plants tomorrow and hopefully I can keep them healthy and alive as long as possible.
Absolutely wonderful content! Newbie here, and just now realizing I may be overwatering my plant each session vs frequency of watering. Your videos are very educational and my plants appreciate it!
I love your onesie-pants (sorry, I have no idea what it's called in English :D). I glue thin cardboard to the bottoms of my basins/saucers to prevent the staining of wood. Learned this from my mom years ago and it works fine.
Most of my pants are in terracotta..I feel that they do best there for me..other planters are beautiful have great designs but for me it's more about my plants surviving! Plus terracotta gives it a rustic look that I love🤗 I once killed a Jade plant :/ potted it into a lovely jar but didnt have drainage and it drowned!! I managed to cut a good part and propagated it then once it grew roots I repotted it ..now I have a new Jade plant and learned my lesson..
Summer may I say, I enjoyed Queen energy and motivation.Yet the othe Tawaian quess I was'nt feeling him.He was a bit closed. We are all diff.yet.Queen's energy and enthusiasm hit the roof , which made me jump thur.and say yes. This is true Love 4 your gift from God.Wow.Just needed to share so you would be a little selective with your quess energy .Because people have masses of beautiful plants doesn't mk.mean there energy is there. You basicly had to pull his answer's out.Truely simply asking. It mks. A Big diff. Take care Summer also you are very Beautiful.😊
I work in a plant shop and yes, the most common question I get is "what can I buy for my bathroom that doesn't have any windows". Early on I'd suggest plantlights, but after a few years I gave up on that since virtually nobody wants to mount lights for their bathroom plant. Nowadays I point them towards the ZZ-plants and make sure they know that it won't survive long term but it'll die more slowly than most. Second most common question is "what do you have that's hardy?". When I was new to the trade I took that to mean what requires the least amount of care. That's not true however. Most peoplee drown their plants.
This video was so helpful and beautifully thought out. I appreciate your time and talents. You love plants and so do I. I want to buy more plants, but its true I don't trust myself with them....bad experience in the past. When I listen and learn from your vids, I actually feel empowered with hope again. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your love for plants. Keep sharing/caring.
Well...another wow video...👍😚. I am a plant lover. But when the pandemic start till now i become a small gardener and start to sell the plants🤗.its very small but its wonderful. This video give me information and perspektif even more...thank you...
I love and appreciate the focus points you cover. Such a helpful video. You've helped me personally so much. Keep it up the great work Summer. I'm totally buying your book.
Glad all of this is helpful. Makes the work I'm putting into this matter more! And don't forget your freebies if you pre-order the book: instagram.com/p/BxKUqs6lFYy/
I Love plants, the more I have them the more I am learning how to better care for them. I know you probably have addressed this, but what do you recommend to help with the insects in houseplants and the soil they live in? I have noticed some flying insects. Thanks so much in advance. You seem so knowledgeable about plants, seem to come natural to you. Love your videos!!!
This was sooo good, Summer!! I still need to work up the courage to actually pull plants out of the pots at the nursery before bringing them home. I especially needed to do this recently b/c the Peperomia Rosso I brought home had spider mites in the soil and I had no idea for like a week. It's since been quarantined in a Ziploc bag until I figure our how to get rid off them. 😳 Thanks so much for all the teachings!! 💚💚
Great video, always so informative! Also, check the plants for FUNGUS GNATS!! I brought a Monstera home from Ikea to my tiny flat, without realising that it was housing those annoying flies... I went travelling for two weeks and when I got back they had infested almost all of my other plants (50+). Two months later I'm almost rid of them, but I am seriously considering buying some nematodes.
Summer! Alert!! 16:52 - porous pots cause a lot of root issues. They create a shell of roots on the inside of the pot which then become very vulnerable to heat and drying out.
I've really learned a lot from your videos. I feel like I started off knowing nothing, but I've worked my way to having a number of plants for a year now, and when it works out I get more confident in getting more. I've got 20 orchids, which I started collecting years ago. And since that went well last year I decided to try out regular house plants. Which I was known for killing. I've started easy with a Mother-in-law's tongue, a Tillandsia and a Bromeliad. Two succulents. And two Calatheas. I thought I'm going to do research first on a plant care before buying it. I've got a humidifier for the Calatheas. This is so cool. Never thought I could make it a year without killing plants. 😄
Awwww this fiddle-leaf in the background 😍. I wanted one for so long, but I need some ferret-secure space for a big pot first. Like a plant stand, or else the fig will be dug up to the roots XD
It is amazing how you and others use the proper scientific name, all I know is the common names of plants. Planterina was suggested to me by UA-cam and then I came across your channel... and i am learning so much from both of you. If both of you collaborated on a video that would be amazing. Annaliese is commenting not Hyatt.
Thank you for making this series! It’s been really helpful as a newbie plant owner! Q. If we ordered a plant online because we couldn’t find a specific one locally, and it came with half of the soil fallen out, do we still wait to re-pot it? Q. How do you pull out the plants without spilling the soil everywhere (especially hoya/succulents). If it doesn’t come up in one solid mass does it mean we should just leave it be?
For some reason after eons of owning plants and being a pretty good green thumb I’ve JUST discovered African violets (like I knew they existed but never thought of owning them) and how much I LOVE them!! I got my first one a few weeks ago and I’m hooked! Lol......I own everything from monsteras to burro tails.
Really enjoying these back to basics videos. I didn’t know the tip about putting terra-cotta on wood and having your saucers glazed. I actually was wondering why my wood was getting rings on it. So thank you for that tip!
I am learning so many things. Thanks. I love all your videos. My friend is ordering me your book. I'm hoping to have several plants growing in my home..... with growing the word not about to die.
Video production is about all I have time for these days haha! Plus you can't really "see" what one is doing in a podcast. When you take sight away, you take away a whole sense.
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much for posting this. I wish I had a wonderful plant shop, such as this one featured here, in my area. All we have are big box store nurseries. I've learned so much from your videos and can't thank you enough for the lessons and education. Keep up the great work!
Summer Rayne Oakes just run-of-the-mill orange terra cotta in the typical shape. kicking myself for not stocking up on gray granite pots when my nursery had them in stock. the neutrals are more my style.
Loved the info. I do have a question for you. There is a peperonia and a hoya with round thick leaves that I can't by sight which is which. Can you show these two together and gives tips how they look different? Thank you.
I love your videos. I use to grow plants a lot as a kid and then I started killing them😞 with your videos my Monstera cutting is growing nicely and I use a few tools to help me as well😊
One point you that hasn't been discussed or mentioned by other plant "experts" Is how plants change once you have them for a while. They can get leggy, thin even if you prefer the bushy look.
I use miracle grow potting soil in the 40 pound bags and mix 2 bags of perilite with it, and i keep it in a 30 gallon trash can on my carport and i add osmocote to it,
Hi Summer! I'm enjoying this series, too! You give such wonderful information. I really like those dark terra cotta pots. I hope I can find some. Thank you for sharing!
I would love a video on the correct pronunciation of some latin names like for example Echeveria some pronounce it with the "ch" like in cat and some with a "ch" like in chair. Latin names always intrigued me :)
Why didn't you tell anything about the caladiums which was in frame most of the times? I really would like to know about caring conditions of that plant. Leaving that aside, as usual such quality contents you are offering us. Happy that i subscribed your channel ❤️
Sreejith Sreekumar agree, I keep seeing a lot this spring and they’re so beautiful but the fact that they die in the winter and you have to collect the tubers to replant them again in the spring kind of scares me
Im kinda shy to talk to strangers, so i’d usually research the heck out of the plant and watch tonnes of youtube videos before going out to buy the plant 😅
same, haha.
Me too generally but I’ve found plant shop people are usually super kind and helpful and never judgmental.
I do the opposite, i buy then google the shits out of it, even when i go to small plant shops where people are nice and helpful.
Same😅
I do the same but post seeing a plant I like 😅 when I see a plant I like I take a pic of it and the name if available then do lots of research on it before I buy it, or if I really really like it I just buy it bring it home then research it :) I know it's not ideal, but I admit I've done that too

It's happened to me too (when employees don't know about plants). So I think the more WE know going into shops, the better!
same here! People here don't know anything about plants in the plant shops or greenhouses.
agree. most people are really just reselling and don't really understand what they're selling.
Turn them onto the channel. :)
@@summerrayneoakes already on it! Haha
yes. here in Portugal is the same thing. so sad

I just found several Calathea musaicas labeled as a ZZ raven! The woman did not care even though it’s very different care. 😖

I just bought my first one - a Domino. 🤞 Wish me luck. 🙂
My heart jumped when you started to touch that succulent. The farina doesnt get replaced.
Checking the roots... makes me think of kicking a car's tyres when shopping 🤣 wouldn't the shop get annoyed? What if the soil all falls out? Great advice but I'd be scared to try that
I work in a plant shop and people who pull the pots off always make a big mess and leave plants all over the place.
I wondered about that when I saw it. I suspect most plant shops would not approve.
Thank you for the pep talk regarding the optimum nursery condition plant quality versus our in-home version once the plant is purchased. Especially with a Lipstick plant being the example, since it is one of mine that has given me that exact sort of frustrating, "what am I doing wrong?" moments!
glad the information is useful!
I haven't watched this in a while, I didn't realize how blunt Summer can be. Yet it's good to be upfront on what can be expected on what the plant can become as it adjusts and grows.
Love this series, Summer! It helps so much in giving a more wholesome, sustainable view on taking care of houseplants. Appreciate your work!
Thanks Aneesah for tuning in :)
These 'Back to Basics' videos are PERFECT! I nominate Summer as 'International Ambassador to the Plant-world'...seriously!
Succulents are so cute, my favorite plant and i started collecting them years ago
Keep doing this videos I'm learning sooo much! And building my confidence with plants I started with cacti and now I stepping up with indoor plants!!! Thank u so much
My greatest pleasure!
I love my plants. You love plants, its in your voice. Thanks for this.
I love how you just pulled the plants out of the pots, i think if i do that the sellers would tell me to stop it! hahah
What a rad human being you are. Your knowledge of plants and the people who parent them keeps drawing me back to your channel. I appreciate you.
Summer I love and need your videos! I too often am a plant killer, I don’t want to be but it happens. But you are helping me, so thanks. I’m making better choices of what to buy, and loosing less plants. I think my thumb is getting greener! :) seeing your home so full of plants inspires me.

"Succulentcy." What an amazing word. It's probably difficult to work into a conversation with anyone other than Ms. Oakes.
19:30 I've seen a lot of people not knowing you could do this, which to where I live is very common. So it's great that you mentioned it I think!
I learn more about plants on youtube, by watching your videos and some others. The plant shops offer general information, but don't go into depth like watching here. Whatever is on the tag, is what they'll tell you. You do us a great service, Summer! 👍😘 Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for being realistic! Yes plants do tend to change a bit once they are brought home.
Almost 100K subscribers! Let's all tell our friends about Summer Rayne, so she can get there! She deserves it!

Thanks for tuning in all the way from Argentina. You have a beautiful country. Would love to get back there sometime. :)
LOVE LOVE these series! I just started getting a few plants for the house, and watching these videos gives me the confident to care for my new plants. Thank you.
watching you, really help me in buying plant, thanks
You’re gonna hit 100k soon!! So well deserved. Loved this. Can already tell this will be the best houseplant 101 on UA-cam!
Thanks Pam. You're such a great supporter!
Thank you for the pointers on planters and what pots to use for different plants.
Ms. Summer, please do a video on efflorescence.

The store worker is really good! Wish I have someone like her around here.
I grow my tropicals outdoors since i live in a tropical climate. But indoors. I keep a mix of tropical and hardened temperate plant (Camelia japonica)
First few seconds of your video..i loved. It....
Straight to the point...
Thank you. This shop visit was full of useful information. Plant care broadly covered. Love the word cachepot.
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for tuning in!
Great video, very clear & thorough explanation, very useful for beginner like me. Thanks!

hard to see eggs of fungus gnats, but yes...

Most informative and engaging video about plants! Thank you for doing this.
I'm glad I can make time. Thanks for tuning in!
Summer Rayne Oakes , i like you’re back pack , what brand is it ? :)
I believe it just means the roots arent established
Omg I know that place! 🤗🤗 I try to go there whenever we visit our family
So great! Say hi to Katie next time you're there. :)
You need to do a podcast summer!
Video production is about all I have time for these days haha! Plus you can't really "see" what one is doing in a podcast. When you take sight away, you take away a whole sense.
Awesome tips Summer! Thanks again!
you're welcome. Thanks for tuning in.
What a fantastic video! Thank you so much for posting this. I wish I had a wonderful plant shop, such as this one featured here, in my area. All we have are big box store nurseries. I've learned so much from your videos and can't thank you enough for the lessons and education. Keep up the great work!
those clay pots 😩 i wish i had access to more non-traditional, modern clay planters like those beauts.
What do you usually have around where you live?
Summer Rayne Oakes just run-of-the-mill orange terra cotta in the typical shape. kicking myself for not stocking up on gray granite pots when my nursery had them in stock. the neutrals are more my style.
Christine Canfield - I was drooling over those grey terracotta pots 🤤
Do you live in the U.S. or mind shopping online? I can help you look :)
Loved the info. I do have a question for you. There is a peperonia and a hoya with round thick leaves that I can't by sight which is which. Can you show these two together and gives tips how they look different? Thank you.
I love your videos. I use to grow plants a lot as a kid and then I started killing them😞 with your videos my Monstera cutting is growing nicely and I use a few tools to help me as well😊
Oh btw, I love the painting you have hanging up on your wall, love the colors.
can you please show us you philodentrons would be soooooo cool
Love your VDO thank you so much ❤️
One point you that hasn't been discussed or mentioned by other plant "experts" Is how plants change once you have them for a while. They can get leggy, thin even if you prefer the bushy look.
I needed this 5 plants ago.. We lit now.. Thank you!!
Make a video on orchid
Thank-you so much for all the information. You're a great teacher. I have learned a lot from your videos.
I use miracle grow potting soil in the 40 pound bags and mix 2 bags of perilite with it, and i keep it in a 30 gallon trash can on my carport and i add osmocote to it,
Awesome and informative. I'm a newbie and your videos are very helpful. Keep it up!
Glad you find them useful.
Like your videos, dont know why I always fail to grow succulent
That’s a lovely cactus, in the beginning
Hi Summer! I'm enjoying this series, too! You give such wonderful information. I really like those dark terra cotta pots. I hope I can find some. Thank you for sharing!
I enjoy all of these plant videos....so much knowledge and I appreciate you ❤️🌱🌿🌵
You're Amazing 🌿...So0 much information.
Love your show !
Plant names are so hard to remember though !!
Sreejith Sreekumar agree, I keep seeing a lot this spring and they’re so beautiful but the fact that they die in the winter and you have to collect the tubers to replant them again in the spring kind of scares me
@@dbag96 i am from South side of India and it's humid and sunny here so no worries of temperature getting low
@@Felhasz007 so what you're saying is if my indoor temperature stays fairly warm they;ll stay alive indefinitely?
@@dbag96 not only warm but needs a fair amount of humidity
Thank you!! I have been wanting to go to the plant shop!
you should! Say hi to Katie!
Great content and you explained so well.
glad you're enjoying!
Good visit to the nursery
