This is a video comparison of the stagg edb and the Palatino VE-500 bass, both arco and pizzicato. Hopefully this will help people wondering which one to buy. NOTE: I am not endorsed by either company, and this comparison is meant to be as unbiased as possible (for I still haven't decided which bass I'm keeping yet...). Both instruments are very close to stock, but used. (sorry for the audio getting quiet and loud in spots - I'm using the Zoom q3 with it's "auto" clipping setting)
Thank you so much for posting this! I've not looked much at the Stagg, but I appreciate someone skilled and knowledgeable playing the Palatino side-by-side with another EUB. At this point, I'm considering both the Palatino VE-550 and the NS Design NXT, and this helps me a lot!
Thank you very much for this excellent demo comparison. I'm an electric left handed bassist and have entertained taking up double bass for a long time (as many of us electric players do). Ultimately, I went with a converted Stagg based on your video, and couldn't be happier. For $450 shipped to my door converted lefty, tonally, I think it smokes some other EUBs costing 3x as much. There are a few mod demos out there to improve the instrument even further.
Great vid! Helping me make the decision to get a Palatino, since I'm after a good bow sound. Thanks!
Hi - great video, and it's good to see someone demonstrating an EUB who can actually play upright bass!
i like that the stagg's support bar is in a better place, and that pizz it sounds more like a double bass. But I still like the way the neck and fingerboard are on the palatino, and how it sounds bowed... though it weighs a too.
That was a really unbiased and straightforward comparison, thanks. I play acoustic guitar with an acoustic trio and am considering switching to EuB for the sound and look. I like the Palatino because it has a more conventional look but it appears the Stagg might be more newbie friendly. Any thoughts?
These vs videos seem to be some of your best videos.
People like them when they are trying to make up their minds...I've got another one planned, but there are a few videos I have to do first
We both gotta be making vids ike crazy. Ive already made over 150 in 150 days.
Cool early UA-cam vid, glad it’s still up. Info was great for my purpose. One note: neck is not plastic but “ebonized hardwood” which is wood stained really really darkly. A correction ought to be made. I will look into your work as it appeared you are still at it. Thanks for posting this.
Thank you, and thank you for the correction. I can't really edit that part of the video at this point, but hopefully people will see your comment. Most of my recent videos are centered around U-Bass/bass ukulele, and I hope there are things you can enjoy about those videos as well. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I just received my Stagg and it looks good. Sounds fine in piz without hooking up to an amp. I don't have a bow but will want to get one. I will post up a very detailed video of the stagg. So far it is a solid addition to my arsenal. I have a fretless bass guitar (ibanez Gary Willis sig) and three other basses. A 5string Schecter Stiletto, Ibanez 4 string and an Acoustic bass. All I need now is a six string and I will have all the basses I will ever need. Maybe a Warwick or Michael Tobias.
I ended up keeping the stagg for quite a while. My reason was that it felt more like my actual upright. I used it mostly for practice purposes, so the feel was most important.
@robbanzana the stagg is a good beginner friendly bass, it has good sustain and the support bar being in the right place makes it more accurate for if you get a fully acoustic upright. However, the string tension can be a bit tight (and hard to push down) depending on what strings you use. Be prepared to work on technique carefully as to not injure your hands/wrists.
thanx man ..was informative.i'm thinkin of getting a palatino!!
Hey im looking to buy one of these... this video really really helped me! My opinion is the Palatino sound, is much better... especially with bow. Is it not?...
Thank you again :)
awesome video sure helped me decide, quick question, what amp do you recommend and can you use a normal double bass bow on them
cool, I actually have some helicore hybrids. I'll try them out on the stagg and post another video...
The palatino sounds great with the bow and may have more visual than stagg . However the sound of stagg in pizzicatto is clearly more true to acoustic .
both of those sound slightly true...though it depends on how you're playing. With a bow, the palatino sounds fine, but pizzicato might take some tweaking indeed. The stagg puts out more "interference noice" through the headphone output more than anything else...try them both out if you can.
@jossgw not to my knowledge, though I've seen a used one on ebay with a bow.
Palatino advertises that their fingerboard is ebony, but the one I have did not have an ebony fingerboard. Mine was just stained to look like an ebony fingerboard. I don't know if mine had been replaced by someone before I got it (but I got mine "new" from a local music store).
@loon2u4fun I'd just say compare the tones and decide which one fits better with the group. They both have very distinct tones. The palatino was easier on the left hand ("fret" hand)...as far as string tension, but the stagg is easier to play with traditional upright technique.
...so now it's two years later - which one did you end up keeping and why? I bought the Palatino two days ago and am pretty happy with it, though it's my first foray into the world of EUB so my opinion doesn't count for much. haha.
Nice review. The Palatino sounds much better in my opinion, but if I get an EDB, it might be the Stagg. I'm a bass guitar player for over 40 years and just interested in an electric upright to mess with at home. To my ear, the Stagg sounds fuller, but the Palatino sounds cleaner. I did notice the Stagg vibrates on certain notes. This is the second video I heard that and at first I thought it might have been frequencies overdriving the recording equipment, but now I'm sure it's the bass itself. Again, great review!
For me, I liked the Stagg for the playing posture and feel of the instrument. Its main purpose for me was for having to be quiet but still wanting to practice and have it feel like my acoustic upright. As far as buzz, there are ways to raise the action, but some of the string buzz may be from the coating on the fingerboard and/or the amount of pressure required to hold the strings down. The Stagg has an awesome and full low frequency boost that made it more fun in gigging situations I would normally bring my electric bass to. The Palatino is better looking, but more awkward to play. I found that neither quite had a tone that came close to the acoustic upright, so eventually I sold both. But the Stagg fit my needs better. Thanks for watching!
The Stagg may have some sympathetic vibration going on...maybe muting the strings under the bridge might help this as well? I can't remember if the body itself vibrated that much or not...
@@stephencoxbass for my purposes I could live with the vibrations because I wouldn't be gigging with it and it's lightweight so if I wanted to take it somewhere, it looks like it would be a lot less awkward to travel with.
Thank you!
I guess it was more comfortable because of the support bars or was it the neck? The Palatino is pretty heavy... even though I've never held a real acoustic upright, I imagine that they're likely around the same weight?
@sstrunks8000 Yes, it is a 3/4
@duffmasterofpuppets on the palatino? no...its more related to how parallel it is with the surface of the instrument...upright basses have depth, and you lean against the edge where the back and the side meet...the support bar on the palatino is where the FRONT and the side meet...so it creates a weird posture problem that could lead to wrist issues.
bonjour, sorry it's in french... Merci pour ces infos, surtout la confirmation que l'on peut utiliser un archet sur ces instruments(info pas facile à obtenir)
the stagg has no plastic parts, it's all wood (different parts of wood glued together), covered with a pretty thick color and finish
Damn Stagg sounds so much better.
Sorry I'm extremely new to uprights. Would you call the palatino a 3/4 size?
Ah thanks for your reply Stephen. So 10 years on, do you still rate the Stagg EUB? It must still be the best value introduction to upright playing and widely available in the UK. Happy playing! 🎶
It was pretty good overall, but nothing I've found at lower price ranges can really compare to having a real double bass. The biggest issue with my stagg was pretty high string tension, so if I were to get one again, I would change the strings to a lighter gauge. I ended up selling both of these basses.
Wow
Yo tengo el mismo Palatino
solo que lo tengo con cuerdas de plástico para un sonido tropical
Tienes redes o algo para seguirte?
I don't know, now...I found these on ebay for about $400 at the time. If you look for awhile, you might find much better deals.
Nice! Does anyone know the length of the Palatino from headstock to the bottom of the body? I wanna see if it'll fit well in my car.
+/- 1.50 mtr
how the price of each Palatino & stagg?
The Stagg fingerboard is made of wood, but it is finished with a very thick coating -I think it is powder coated. This makes it look and feel like plastic, but structurally it is wood with a plastic finish.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
me neither live...but it would be useful for practicing my orchestral chops...
What's the left hand playability like on the Palatino? I have a Stagg and it's ridiculously HARD to play.
I was thinking it was due to string tension...maybe different gage strings would make the right hand playing easier? I believe the Palatino was slightly easier, but the position of the bar made it unusable as a practice tool for me.
Does the stagg have a magnetic pickup in it? Or rather, what kind of pickup does it have?
under the bridge transducer.
Very helpful review but can you switch the light on next time? Thanks 🤣🤣
Hi Paul, this review is over a decade old, and it was filmed with a Zoom recorder that was notoriously bad with lighting. The light was on, though I didn't have professional lighting. I'm glad the review was still helpful so many years later! Thanks for watching!
Thank you great tutorial...I've gone with the Stagg. Please can you tell me what the metal knob is on the back of the neck wher it joins the body , just below heel/neck position ??
It came with my bass but what's it for ? I'm feeling super dumb here please help.
I'm not quite sure of a metal knob there...there's a volume knob and a tone know...but I'm not familiar with another one. I wish you had a picture of it you could share...you can email me with a picture of it if you would like: stephencoxbass@gmail.com
@@stephencoxbass thanx I'll try get a pic to you. Ok just sent you an email..
@@gavinhobbs3831 Ok, cool. I replied, But I'm still not completely sure...maybe it's for a strap while playing or maybe it's for hanging the bass when storing it. Who knows...
Nice comparison
Thank you!
Trying to grab the palatino been doing a lot of research
@@jpilot07 The Palatino is cool if you can figure out a way to keep good posture while playing it.
@@stephencoxbass well I’m an electric player but this is my first upright just to get into it I didn’t wanna spend 3k on a eminence and I don’t play upright regularly lol
@@jpilot07 Those Eminence basses are super cool, but they are pretty pricey for sure!
Hi. there is several years since you made this video. :) what will you recommend now for a electric upright bass? :-)
I actually haven't played many others (if any) in this price range since then. The Stagg felt more like my acoustic upright, while the palatino required you to alter your technique more. So as a practice tool I would recommend the Stagg over the Palatino. Tone wise, however, it just depends on what you like.
@@stephencoxbass thank you for a fast and good answer. :-)
You're welcome!
I can't find the palatino anywhere. Also how much did pay for it since prices range quite wildly?
I believe this one was around $400 used, though this was over a decade ago.
a new one was $1,299.99 13 years ago
i bought the stagg this is my first upright is it necessary to have an upright bass "set up"?
yes indeed ! ...any instrument you use should be "set up"...for you...
better still, learn to set up your own axe ...save some $...
48,960 :)
Is it acceptable for an orchestra?
I would say no, the tone of either instrument would probably not blend correctly.
can you play slap bass on these? you know like rockabilly.
Yes you most certainly can.
What about the light????????????????
Which light?
piezo active pickup
I want an electric upright bass for my Folk Punk band.
Folk punk? That sounds awesome!
@@stephencoxbass I'm glad you approve! Bowing either one of these basses would sound great alongside the following instruments:
1. Concertina.
2. Tambourine.
3. Acoustic guitar.
4. Banjo.
Sounds fun!
@@stephencoxbass it certainly does!
Palatino has more authentic sound.
True, yet the Stagg feels more like an upright (as far as playing posture). I got it as mostly a practice tool, so the Stagg ended up fitting my needs better.
Plucking. 0:28 4:20
Thanks for adding the time stamps!
It's good that you describe the differences between instruments. However, as a true bass musician I suffer from lack of good tuning, and just this little 1000' of an inch feeling of beeing off tune, it's what you miss when you play music that makes it all come together, for your fellow musicians, and hopefully, your CLOUD!.
You're probably a good technician, and eager to learn, but you really have to listen by your ears, and listen and learn. Sorry, but you are not in tune. Apprecciate the efforts you might make, if you desire, and do good training, I think you have a great start!
ON THE OTHER HAND, YOU MIGHT BE NO.1 AND JOKING WITH ME!
you're an ass
very rude....
Put a sock on it
I know what you mean, but out of context it sounds like "put a sock in it!" haha! Even with muting the bridge, it wasn't the sound I was looking for.
