In this video I demo the Stagg EDB 3/4 Electric Upright Bass. I show and explain its features as well as play it through my live Hartke rig as well as run it through ProTools to show how the pickup sounds through a DAW.
BOTTOM LINE: For what this instrument costs you really can't go wrong. It is built like a tank and really excels when recorded into a DAW. I can't say that I have any letdowns to mention. Very well made electric upright bass.
I totally agree with you still in the year of 2022:) I think the length of the strings matter for upright sound; the sound of stagg edb is way closer to acoustic upright than more expensive shorter scale electric upright. Thanks!

I use one for jazz and soul, and I gotta admit it plays and sounds fine, there is no electric upright that can compare with a double bass on tone in my opinion, but these stagg upright basses are pretty damn good ( cost 1 10th of a double) and through a Markbass rig the overall sound is really good.
They are worth every penny ! .

Thanks for posting this demo. I purchased this EUB a month or so ago, and I've got no major complaints. I'm happy with the tone, portability, and playability of this instrument. I do agree that the fret position markers on my EUB were off-pitch as well. No biggie, I ended up covering them up with electrical tape and kept things moving. Besides, playing in tune on a fretless instrument should be done by ear and feel rather than by sight IMO. I really don't understand all this anti-EUB rhetoric from purist/traditionalist camp of bass playing. EUBs are just tools for making music. The Hammond B-3 didn't replace the pipe church in church music, yet its contribution to music is highly notable. Now let's all stop arguing plaids and stripes, and go practice...

I have a various assortment of 5 electric basses (Rickenbacker, Fenders, Ibanez), and really want to venture into something upright. It actually sounds like an acoustic. If I didn't see it and just heard it playing, I would think it was an acoustic. Very good sound quality. I have been wanting to get into upright and I wanted something to travel with and I came across this video and I think I know what I will be going with.

I played one of these at the weekend. Never played a DB before, though did used to play cello, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was easy enough to play straight from a fretted bass guitar and I got some lovely tones out of it. Only trouble is I SO want to get one now.
My wife bought me this bass 3 years ago and it's so cool. Thank you for sharing.

Nice review, I also have this bass but in an all black finish. As much as I would like a full body acoustic, you can't argue that it is perfect for those with little to no space in their room! Was not expecting you to break out into Primus! Nice wee bit of Southbound Pachyderm

Thanks, Jody. I haven't played a Stagg acoustic upright yet. The last double bass I owned down here in Florida started to have some major problems with the glue and wanting to separate. It was not a high dollar upright, but it wasn't cheap either - this is why I went the EUB route. I just can't afford to keep getting a traditional double bass repaired down here in the Florida humidity.

Hello Antonio, the EDB utilizes a piezo bridge pickup. I have NOT performed live with it, I purchased it mainly for studio work. I do plan to use it live shortly, but at this time I have no actual live experience to draw from other than what is shown in this video. I will say that I don't think you will have any issues in regards to feedback. Before I purchased the EDB I did extensive research and I don't remember hearing anyone mention feedback issues.

These are standard upright strings. You can find them on any string website - I use just strings dot com. They have a wide variety to choose from and get them to you really fast. I live in a very rural area so I need to use the internet to order my strings. If you have a better option locally then you should ask for strings for a 3/4 sized upright bass.
An electric upright can be really useful sometimes. Brazilian composer Zizao Machado uses it on his performance of the great tune called Apmaro (olha Maria) by Chico Buarque. I believe it is an electric upright, it has the clicking and punch of upright bass, but the sustain is pretty long and it sounds a little hit electronic too. I believe simple red used it in his recording of "if you don't know me by now"

Hey! Finally got my edb! I love it. Still have to get used to its sound. I have been playing and "So What" (with Miles and the guys in the original version as background) sounded just perfect!

Thanknyou Bryan for the hints as of how to adjust the bridge... I lowered it to the recommended high but it vibrates badly, so I adjusted the higjt again to the higher end and it improved...
Will keep on adjusting till I find the right sound...
Excellent. And you might need to also adjust your playing technique. You’ll know when it all falls together.
The dot inlays usually are set by the violin builder according to your preference. Because this depends on how you play the bass and your height. Imo they are only a rough indicator but that's because I always play by ear and distance between fingers. So once I have my reference the rest is distance between fingers on the neck.

Hi, my son just got one of these that was broken. The top where the strings go in was mostly gone. He's refurbished it, and it really looks nice. Good video. It's funny, I had never seen one of these.

Hello catboyzee. I'm glad you found value in this video. It took me awhile to finally decide to make it because so many people were slamming the Stagg EDB. But in the end I said it was too nice of a bass for people to not get the whole story. I will put together a little instructional video or two to get people who want to start playing upright bass a strong foundation. Thank again for your kind words!

Any 3/4 upright bass strings will do - these basses use standard 3/4 scale upright strings. I normally go to just strings dot com for all of my string needs. I trust them and they always get me what I need super fast.

Hi Brian, I really liked your video demonstration of the Stagg EDB. I've been playing it for about 7 months now, making the switch from electric lefty bass guitar (yep, I'm a lefty!) - but I play this righty (like a "normal person"). I would agree that this instrument is the closet thing you will get to sounding like an actual upright bass. I've had it going through a Galien Kruger combo and a TC Electronics stack. In both instances, the growl and short sustain of what would sound like an upright came through. The only thing that I really wish they would have focused on is making the endpin not vibrate so much. I can clearly hear it when I play (and definitely through the headphones), but those in the audience said they could not. I guess that's a good thing. :)
Hello Jazz_Cat - I have found that in certain positions it "vibrates" less than others. On mine I have to pull the end pin all the way out to the last groove and tighten the pin there. If I use one of the other grooves I will get much more vibration, which tells me the less of the end pin that remains inside of the EDB's cavity then the less amount of vibration will occur.
Brian Buckalew Thanks, Brian. Yeah, when the endpin is pulled all the way out it definitely vibrates less. Luckily, I'm tall enough that it's not such a big deal for me. But shorter folks might find it somewhat problematic. Hello Jazz_Cat. I am an amateur Bassist (Left handed also), and I have played a Left Handed Fender Jazz Bass for almost 40years. Can you tell me if the EDB can be adapted, and played left-handed? I am looking to add a fretless bass to my kit, and I am looking to go either with a fretless electric Bass, or an Electric upright (assuming I can play one.. I never have). The EDB is in the right price range for me, and Brian's demo gives the EDB the thumbs up on performance and price... Thanks for your help with this
Peter Fisher Hi Peter! I switched to playing the normal way once I switched to Upright Bass, so I haven't reversed the strings. That being said, I see no reason why it couldn't be done. I thought about doing it myself, but I wanted flexibility in my choices for an acoustic. And since finding a left-handed one can be difficult and expensive, I decided to play it non-lefty. For the Stagg EUB, you might have to sand down the nut but like I said above, it shouldn't prove impossible.

Certainly. I think it is a very well rounded EUB. It does have certain limitations, but you make mask or avoid these limitations with proper technique. I actually play some Primus and Iron Maiden in this video - so it just depends on your definition of decent.
Wow. It's amazing you can EVEN play progressive stuff on it. It even doesn't sound half bad either.

Brian Buckalew My point was that I couldn't imagine an instrument being fine for one genre but suck at progressive stuff. That really depends on how good of a player you are. But maybe this was me being a little annoying.

Hey Brian, nice review - nice playing. I've been playing this bass live for about five years now and find that it has served me rather well. I do get a low loud hum when plugged into certain circuits. This is the fault of faulty grounding of the electrical system of the place, not the bass itself. Intonation is just fine with mine as well as is with yours. I do have an issue with the rattly tailpiece set up. I did wrap the interior with felt to dampen that a tad. I am about to replace original strings with a synthetic gut-nylon type (Superior-Bassworks-DELUXE) set just to see if it will give me that rockabilly/bluegrass type sound - the pick up system on this allows such a conversion, which is an advantage that is not often mentioned.
I had to pull the tailpiece all the way to the last slot in order to eliminate the rattle/buzz. It just happens this brings it to well within my comfort zone.

...I also found that the removable side-arm for resting on the body, kept coming unscrewed and making a rattle. I fixed this by going to a hardware store and getting two rubber washers (25p each) for between the captive bolt on the side-arm and the EUB's body.
It does somewhat amaze and distress me that such a great instrument can have silly problems like this.
Re the fret dots, all OK for me, but obvious note; they mark the actual frets (3, 5 etc) not the space between.

Not yet, Yorg - but due to the ability of this EUB being able to be played WITH a bow was one of the main reasons that I was so interested in it.

There is a different type of slap on the double bass where you pull the string away from the body and have it slap against the fingerboard. Rockabilly music uses this technique solely for bass playing. Look up rockabilly slap bass to see an example of this. I have seen Stanley Clarke do a technique similar to slap and pop, but it is extremely difficult to do and only really sounds like a drum.
The short answer is yes. But you really don't go off of "fret" as you do positioning with an upright bass. That is what I was trying to say in the video. Thanks for watching, and great question!
Do you always need the battery or does it play without when you have it connected to an amp?
It is loud enough to be played acoustically for practicing, but not when in a live situation with other instruments - you will need a battery and an amp or PA for that purpose.

It surely wouldn't hurt, but the EDB does have a great tone going direct into an amp or audio interface.

Great review Brian. I just started learning bass on a little Ashbory extremely short scale fretless bass guitar. I am loving the bass, but find myself drawn to the full size basses now. its good to know what I can get for a low price.
I play a Fender Fretless. I have since 1971. I have 2 necks so one is always being resurfaced. One thing tha tREALLY Pssesss me off is I tried a Ymaha fretless and the markers were in the middle of the fret! Like how frets are marked on a regualr guitar! NOT "on" the fret like the fretless Fender. Talk about a pain in the bass! I also sing lead and am an engineer. So tell me, are the frets in the same place as the Fender? I don't use the markers either but THAT can really throw you off! Rock on

Nice review Brian. Would you say an Electric Upright Bass is any easier to learn on then a traditional beginner's acoustic base ?
Hello Craig - it all depends on what you are attempting to do with the upright bass. It would be hard for me to say it is better to start on a traditional acoustic upright bass, but I can see why it would make playing an electric upright easier. I think someone could learn on an electric upright and become just as good of an upright player when compared to someone who learned on a traditional upright. I think the key would be who is teaching the person - are they a good teacher. If so, I think you could learn on just about anything, lol.

haha, I have no affiliation with Stagg or their equipment. Maybe they should send me an endorsement check, though. Everything shown in this video was to dispute some very negative reviews that I read online prior to my purchase of this EUB. I recommend it because it works fine for me.

Of all the Upright bass I've researched and stagg and yamaha silent svb 200 are those that come closest to the sound of the double bass . The rest has sound fretless bass.
hey Brian, this sounds great...wonder if you've tried out the Stagg BC300 fretless?...I got one online, and it plays fine..heard the same thing (fret dot markings dont lineup) but mine seems pretty good (I adjusted the bridge slightly and again it seems fine to my ears)

Hello Tore, sorry, but I'm actually not qualified to comment on slapping and popping on an upright. I am a classical/jazz style upright musician and I can honestly say that I've never slapped or popped on an upright.

I have recently acquired this electric upright bass (sunburst finishing) and still have some trouble with buzzing on the G string (and only with it). People said that before start doing things on the bass, I should try to change the set. Do you know what is the brand of the strings that are shipped with this bass? And most of all, will using this or that famous brand have any difference on the sound at all, once it's not acoustic?

+Aluizio Cruz Happy Holidays to you as well! First off, the strings that come with this bass aren't very good. I would recommend you get a set of upright bass strings that fit your budget. I would hate to say, "use this brand" and then you get them and don't like them, so I would suggest you do some research first and see what other people are saying. This will undoubtedly fix your buzzing problem on your G string.

Hello stormbringer67. This EUB is a 3/4 size equivalent. As long as you purchase a 3/4 size upright, then you will have no issues.
This video just made my mind about which upright bass to purchases ($500 budget) I'm just wondering what were some of those odd riffs you were playing they sound really great!
Some are just random playing - a Blues riff, a couple Rock riffs, etc. I do throw in a couple of my favorite mess-around lines also: Southbound Pachyderm by Primus, How Many More Times by Led Zeppelin, and Wrathchild by Iron Maiden.

Hello JackofTradesMusic, I am 5'7" and I can't say if this bass will be playable at your height. What I would suggest is if available to go and try one out. You may need an endpin that is custom made for your height. Best of luck!

+john weiss Stagg Thanks. I think you are doing a great think by purchasing an upright for your grandson - I would have loved one as a present when I was a teenager! EDB-200 is BASSically the model number of the Stagg 3/4 (the 3/4 is actually the size of the bass as opposed to and actually model number). Upright basses come in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full size (4/4), but most average size adults choose the 3/4 as it fits the average body size the best. I hope that helps.

Bryan, would you know how to lower (just a few mm) the bridge. I have done ot with guitars but never on a bass. It is 1.5 instead of 1.3 to say ... would appreciate any comments. I do not want to screw up...
There are two metal dials on each post of the bridge. These are rotated clockwise or counter clockwise to raise and lower the bridge.

Hi Brian! Great video! I've been thinking about buying a Stagg EDB but have a question. I'm a singer/musician/writer and plays a lot of instruments - over 30 years. I've even recorded at SUN Studios in Memphis and in Nashville. Mainly I'm recording at my own studio.
