    I never thought that I'd say this, but it was funny to see a professional luthier (especially one of your caliber) suffer from the same "newbie anxiety" as I did when taking the lid off the box on your first cigar box guitar (CBG) build. I was literally laughing out loud when you were worrying about ruining the little label by cutting through it. I found myself saying, out loud, "Just cut the label, and glue the edges down if you need to." When you said, "Can you tell I've never done this before?" my wife, from across the room, said, "Yeah!"
    Not out to embarrass you, Mr Crowe - not in the least. It's just good to know that even a man who has built custom guitars that sell for large sums, has some of the finest quality hand tools available to him, and who literally teaches others how to build some of the finest musical instruments in the world can get nervous about damaging a $3 cigar box in the same way that I used to. I know that you were trying to take care not to damage it, but keep a bit of perspective. Those boxes are not antiques, they're not irreplaceable, they're not collectable, they're not even remotely rare - there are literally tens of thousands of them out there. If you mess up a label, who cares? Consider it character. It's supposed to look rustic and road worn.
    I'll not even presume to give you any advice at all, other than to say this: it's a cigar box guitar - don't overthink it. At the end of the day, it's just a stick in a box. Have fun.

      +Mark Lindsay Wouldnt a hair dryer make removing the whole label a lot easier, then at the end, sticking it back on?

    • @MarkLindsayCNC
      @MarkLindsayCNC 8 років тому +1

      Webgkil It might, but, strictly speaking, it's not really necessary. It's one of those "personal choice" things. If you'd like to keep the label intact, then your way would work. If it doesn't really matter to you, then just slice it like Mr. Crowe did. That's how I do it, anyway. A little bit of white glue will take care of any loose ends.
      I hope folks don't take my post the wrong way. My comment was totally "tongue-in-cheek." I was laughing about the irony. The block of wood Mr. Crowe picked up to help him remove the lid was probably more expensive than the box he was worried about damaging. That just struck me as funny. It was nice to see someone else all giddy about building a CBG, because I know that feeling very well.

    So great to watch a master at work. I build timber furniture and play the guitar. You have inspired me to after many years of procrastination to build a guitar. Thankyou. Love the Japanese saws.

    You know, as someone with little CBG building experience, I also have an Oliva box I'm currently using. I'm fretting the fret board now and all of the wood (except the box) is his "favorite" wood for building guitars: oak.

    I have been watching every video on building a CBG and your video is the most informative so far. I will be looking forward to these in a kit for sure. (but I'm still going to make a few for the grandbaby's as I'm their favorite Granny Kym)

    I love the way you just think lets build a guitar in an afternoon lol
    I own a Recording Studio in Cornwall and we often try to call in a few guys and make a record in half a day! I think what's the point of being the boss and having all the tools if you can't sometimes just say "I wonder if I can.."

    To cut the F holes, should have masked off the top with Blue/Green tape... Used a dremel with router base attachment and rotozip bit

      +Karlfalcon, I'm currently on my first build, an electric guitar. I was making a joke as I had no clue, prior to the video, what an 'F hole' is. I see now, despite what tool you choose to use, it is for sound.

    Any chance of an electric Ukulele???.......could help keep down wastage and fill an enormous gap in the market.

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars

      Kit or finished build? Either could be really interesting..

    • @stuartjpc
      @stuartjpc 8 років тому +1

      Either way would be good, The market for high end ukuleles is massive right now as it is with high end guitars. But nobody seems to be producing a top quality electric uke. They sound amazing and could make a nice new string to your bow (ahem)!
      When you consider the size of wood required there are lots of options without going overboard on price, I personally would need a complete due to my circumstances.
      It would also open up the chance to experiment with the sound. Right now all you can alter on a Ukulele is the body size and type/brand of string! or add a pickup I just think a solid body would be amazing!!
