Love your style edd from your very first WD episode. Upload as much or as little as you like you owe us nothing and we are lucky to have you thanks again
I do really appreciate Edd's delving into the newer high-tech tools available today. He's never condescending and explains his reasoning very succinctly.
Thank you, that is really what is going on, trying out new tech and seeing what can be done differently, and how that turns out. Great fun playing with new workshop toys too…
Thanks for sharing your new toy Edd, and as always a job well done! Finding solutions and showing the process in detail is the kind of learning II hunger for.
We were and she couldn’t! In fact during a flood we had the Stuart Turner at full chat and an electric trolling motor and still only barely made it upstream (but it was very fast flowing) - should had added some dilithium crystals!
Hello Mr. Edd, I've been watching your TV shows and UA-cam videos for years. It's great to see your projects, Mr. Edd. Greetings from Salamanca, Chile 🇨🇱🏜️😊
Excellent work! That boat is a work of art. Been watching W D from the first again. You do nice work on whatever you put your hand to. A pleasure to watch.
The music for the intro had me checking the calendar, "Silent night" in September, christmas starts all too soon!! As for the sticking point, I love 3M VHB tape, haven't had it fail on anything I've used it on yet, though I've no laser cutter thingy so I have to make do with knives and scissors to trim it to fit things... :P
I was once told that boats that navigate salt as well as fresh water should have two waterlines, the bottom one for salt water and the upper one for freshwater. a salt water line would not be visible in freshwater so it would fail as the intended indicator for load distribution balance
Edd, honestly a decent sponsored video. Cutting with a craft knife all those detailed letters would have been a pain also likely take nearly as long without giving you some new skill. Honestly some brass screws would likely give it an even better look, might think about it just for security against the weather and the glue failing long term. It'd have been a bit of a job to get everything lined up with just screws, so even though it'd have been much quicker, you'll probably end up with a better product doing the tape then screws. Thanks for sharing, even if it was sponsored, cheers mate from cloudy Seattle!
Hello Seattle! Thank you, totally agree, the wood is 60 years old so screws could have been a little inconsistent. Also it’s always fun to try out new tech!
That's a neat idea. It beats cutting off tape by hand and risking scratching the material. Which I've done too often... Ps: you should get an external fumes extractor or a bigger diy hepa filter box (4-5 filters held in a box with tape and a fan atop) if you stand in the same area. Or you can use your toys to overengineer one for a cool video! Cutters and 3d printers often produce odourless particles that go through small cracks of the machine.
Instead of boat, glue, foam, glue, brass it would make most sense to do boat, glue, brass. Lovely machine; daft use. Boys and their toys! (And yes, I wish I had a Laser tool like this)
My brother sells fly tying materials and gets a booth at a massive fly fishing expo every year. The booth next to his has a machine like this, but slightly larger and the engrave trout, silhouettes of fly fisherman, etc. on everything from phone cases to wooden and composite fly boxes. They make a VERY healthy profit with their engraver/cutter!
I got some of that tape to fit a Mazda badge back on my car as it fell off when I washed it. I couldn't believe how hard, and messy it was to cut! When I got replacement letters for my Megane, they had backing foam adhesive already fitted, which made it so much easier to fit.
I do hope the double sided tape sticks well,if one of the letters drop off you won’t be able to pick it up, unless you are restoring a mini sub- but that’s for another episode!!!👍👍👍👍
I has this issue when I was cutting double sided tape but used a honey comb bed in the end as the tape is easier to remove and the laser cuts much cleaner.
Would be satisfying to see the laser etch into the wood on the boat itself, so the brass could be stuck flush. Brushing into things with the boat might pull those nice brass letters into the watery abyss. “Laser”
Didn't realize this was a sponsored ad for that laser system. I would have simply used brass screws to install them as that is what would have been used back in the day to attach brass to wood.
Absolutely, screws would have been fitting and at least as fiddly but then the video would have been much shorter, I wouldn’t have got to play with a new machine and Hafren would be full of even more holes!
So glad to have you and projects for our viewing pleasure - Keep em' coming. Question What could cause ineffective steering in the central + - 15 degrees of steering?
Galvo lasers are great but very limited in size, i built a large co2 laser on my channel... Better to have applied the tape to the brass before cutting with the water jet. It would do it no problem. 20/20 hindsight as ever 😊
It would also have made for a much shorter video! Very cool/hot that you’ve made your own co2 laser - at our local laser cutting place they have had fibre-optic lasers for their big machines which help with the speed and accuracy but they are industrial setups with industrial pricing! Now I’ve tried the F1 I’m very interested to play with their much bigger (and more powerful) P2 to see what I can do with that. What do you use your own laser for (or is it just because you can)?
We have a small part time business making acrylic signs etc. making the laser was a cool if long winded project. But at least I know how to fix it if it breaks 😊 I've been looking into building a metal cutting fibre laser
I know how you love the toys Edd ... but I'm wondering how long it all took to get each letter done with your laser verses putting the tape on and cutting away with an exacto knife??? The boat is looking great. I would have that over the Range Rover any day. Cheers for this upload.
At least it’s not a musical tune like on some washing machines these days. Actually, the beep was quite useful when it’s done and you’re the other side of the workshop procrastinating on something else!
Speaking as a grumpy Brit, I object to the use of the Merkinese word 'font'. 😁 In British English it's 'fount'. A font is something completely different...
I am a very naughty boy; clearly I’m not the fount of knowledge we were hoping for! Already been corrected that I meant typeface (as the font/fount pertains to variations of the typeface ie bold or italic etc). Very sloppy of me (it will almost certainly happen again)! Thanks for watching. Make English British again!!
Thanks for the video, always pleasure to watch. But I cannot help thinking on transom the text goes too close to the edge, the visual would have been better if it did not go quite that close.
Would have been a very short video but will have to try that (was worried the grit might get caught in the glue but won’t know until we’ve tried it). It was all about playing with a new toy really…
Yes, I think the clear would be the best for that (the black foam might too chewy and catch some of the grit). But it would have been a very short video!
Hey Edd, any reason why you didn't back the Brass plate with the Adhesive backing before cutting the letters? Apart from excellent video content obviously!
Fantastic Edd, my husband and I still watches your W D here in Italy and he decided to buy a young timer MB 300 TE 4 matic which he is not able to resolve it’s issue. His wish is to contact you 😊. Will his wish come true?😢
Thank you. Always need a show partner but more engineering on its way; next episode is powder coating and then probably John’s Ferrari but then almost certainly putting the refurbished Range Rover axles together (at last)!
Saphir is an interesting typeface design of Hermann Zapf's from 1953, but I rather wonder if it that was used widely in GB? I can imagine that most 1950's small boats here were likely adorned with "signwriters' serif" a sort of nondescript lettering done by those who did sign-writing which looked smart enough and generally OK. I think you will have the only craft ever to have Saphir on it!
Love your style edd from your very first WD episode. Upload as much or as little as you like you owe us nothing and we are lucky to have you thanks again
Thank you for the support, more good to come. Might even be reasonably regular for a while. Fingers crossed!
@@eddchina That would be excellent news!! We have missed you mate. Fingers crossed
Now THAT is very cool. First 3D printers, now home laser etching/engraving.
I do like a good toy!
Well it's about time.! You can't leave us so long without content Edd.! Please fella.! Give us more.!
More is on the way, powder coating the chassis is next up (in a fortnight)…
Just love the traditional craft skills!😄😄😄
Thank you! Cheers!
I do really appreciate Edd's delving into the newer high-tech tools available today. He's never condescending and explains his reasoning very succinctly.
Excellent use of high tech laser cutter on an old handcrafted wooden boat. I love seeing traditional crafts merged with the latest in tools.

The boat looks beautiful,Edd!
It really does, thank you.
Hafren is looking great!!
Thanks, better get cracking on the other boat now!!
@@eddchinaoh yes…
@@eddchina If you’re referring to the Range Rover boat then yes, get cracking!
Wow, that boat turned up really great!
It really did, a shame to see it go but it was a lovely thing to spruce up. Best get on with that modern boat next!
Hello Mr. Edd, I've been watching your TV shows and UA-cam videos for years. It's great to see your projects, Mr. Edd. Greetings from Salamanca, Chile 🇨🇱🏜️😊
Great to see you back!
Thank you. Should be another episode up in a fortnight
Hafren is looking quite beautiful! Those final bits will for sure net you a first place trophy next time!
Thank you. Would loved to have entered again but Hafren had to go to a new home unfortunately.
Keep it up, Edd
Good to see you again
Kudos to Hannah! Wonderful work.
It was a great job!

It’s seems to be great stuff, could have cut it on the brass with the water jet but really fun seeing what the F1 laser can do…
Good choice Edd, it looks great! Now I'm just waiting for my engraved rusty metal part from one of your previous builds.
Thanks, we do still have a lot of rusty parts! Maybe something for the shop?
An amazing piece of kit Edd , you wouldn't want to be dyslexic when sticking the letters on the boat though. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome machine , such wonderful skilled craftsmanship ....
It’s a very cool gizmo. Already used it for another job, might be good for gaskets too!
I was once told that boats that navigate salt as well as fresh water should have two waterlines, the bottom one for salt water and the upper one for freshwater. a salt water line would not be visible in freshwater so it would fail as the intended indicator for load distribution balance
Love that and it makes perfect sense!
Glad to see you uploading again!
Thank you, and thanks for watching, more on the way too; powder coating the chassis next…
I couldn't give a font! Great video, keep it up mate 👍
You couldn’t give a typeface, not font, (I have been told off a couple of times already)! Thanks for watching, more to come…
Hah touche! Off topic but ever thought of making a used oil burner/furnace in a log burner or similar. Cheers

Laser cutting vinyl based adhesives & plastics can produce gasses that will etch your optics.
That's a neat idea.

It is fun to play with this tech; who knows what else we’ll do with it…
I would absolutely love one of these for my keyboard hobby. Really neat!
Never mind, it’s $3800. 😮
Depends what you do with it but it could be a great side-hustle or for adding the final touch to something you make a lot of…

Hello Edd, great to hear your voice accompanying some loooong debug sessions 🙂

I do hope the double sided tape sticks well,if one of the letters drop off you won’t be able to pick it up, unless you are restoring a mini sub- but that’s for another episode!!!👍👍👍👍
This is a very expensive way to do this, but I think it is good to learn how to use the machine with precision if you already have it.
Thank you. Exactly the point, it’s really fun to experiment with new tech…

Thank you (nice crepuscular rays)!
Should of renamed it “china tea cup” 😁
Really should have done!
If only all sponsored pieces were so interesting and so well presented.
Just nail on those brass letters, Edd. Done in a jiffy! No need to leave it for another day.
Well done in doing the same letters at the same time
Would be satisfying to see the laser etch into the wood on the boat itself, so the brass could be stuck flush. Brushing into things with the boat might pull those nice brass letters into the watery abyss. “Laser”
I was always told brass doesn't weather too well so use plastic instead.
True but Hafren already has a lot of brass that needs attention (and it’s no longer my problem)!
Didn't realize this was a sponsored ad for that laser system. I would have simply used brass screws to install them as that is what would have been used back in the day to attach brass to wood.

I wonder if that tape would cut and peel better if you applied it to the back then popped it in the freezer for half an hour to cut?
