I had a friend at school whose mom was exactly like this, no exageration. Not even allowed to have a single bite of cake at birthday parties. As a child he never really went against his mom's will and accepted all the restriction. Now he's in college with me and his diet consists exclusively in instant noodles, snickers bars and ben&jerry's.

@@emmib1388 yep. Any extreme is bad. I grew up on Little Debbie’s, peanut butter and jelly, Doritos and Kool-aid and when I got out on my own I couldn’t wait to eat healthier. Although it was hard to shake certain habits and my weight from eating so much crap. With our kids we’re like 2/3 crunchy 1/3 chill. It has been working well and our kids usually make sensible choices on their own, which was our goal. Basically we have occasional treats, especially for special occasions like holidays and birthdays, and just let them do what they want on those days. I think it’s healthy. They’re both strong and fit for their age and I can’t imagine doing it any differently.

@@emmib1388 I Googled where it started from, and a kinda passive-aggressive self proclaimed scrunchy mom weighed in on it! Here it is:
"From my research, the term “crunchy” supposedly comes from the fact that these women are called “granola,” (slang for “hippie”) and granola is crunchy. I know, it’s pretty deep. You may need a moment to fully process that one.
So if “crunchy” is a term used to describe a natural mama, what about the other end of the spectrum? No worries, I Googled that too. According to many references on the web, the opposite of a “crunchy mom” is a “silky mom.” Why silky? I don’t actually know, but I would imagine that whoever coined these terms figured that silky was the opposite of crunchy. Mind. Blown.
silky mom is a mom who gives birth in the sterile hospital environment, uses disposable diapers and may breastfeed but also bottle feeds and maybe formula feeds too. She buys baby food from the store, uses a stroller rather than a baby-wearing device, vaccinates her kiddos and banishes them to a crib where they may even be left to cry it out until they finally give up and fall asleep."
From a site called The House and Homestead. Idk of I can place links here.

I miss the "crunchy" moms of the 80s and 90s. You know, before "crunchy" became an online identity. It was just the way they lived, and if their kid was invited to a party they just let the kid have fun. My mom breastfed, cloth diapered, made food from scratch, gardened, etc. Not once did she pressure anyone else to do the same.

    • @ghillies4life

See, there's a difference between being homey and crunchy. I just got in from tending our beehive, with my carrot harvest in my basket, and I'm now breastfeeding my baby, then I need to start the dough for our homemade naan bread tonight and fold the cloth diapers. But I don't think that any of these things make me a better mom. They're just my preferences. And if my daughters get offered a twinkie, they eat them. Because that's okay! (Also, I am a huge believer in sleep training)

In the 80s and 90s, many people who would be called crunchy now did those things out of necessity. My mom also “breastfed, cloth diapered, made food from scratch, gardened, etc.” out of necessity. They had very little money when I was born and did what they could to survive.

Yeah, it’s easier to be super crunchy when they are babies and toddlers but once they begin socializing and going to parties it’s more difficult. It’s important for kids to learn to make their own decisions too. I would feed healthy food at home but let them choose what to eat when at parties and I never made them turn a goody bag down. 🤣 We we’re even vegan for part of my kid’s early childhoods but at parties I’d let them eat whatever. It’s important to understand why some people are crunchy.
The biggest concern most crunchy moms have is their family being exposed to unnecessary toxins that could potentially cause cancers.
The reason why people are trying a crunchy lifestyle is to not get sick. Yet this is entertainment for some people.
I hope y’all are watching this and learning. Maybe Google some of the ingredients and their side effects found in your own pantry.
A good introductory document to watch is Stink!
The documentary can be found on Netflix, UA-cam, maybe Prime.
If you’re into decluttering and you hit a wall. Maybe declutter some of the toxic cleaning supplies/ make up/ sunscreen.

This lifestyle is for the rich- believe me I have dived into the shallow end for 25 years. Im a moderate crunch. My kids lived healthy, but with social events- I was not like that. When people tried to be kind and provide alternatives we always accepted. Teaching gratitude and kindnessm is much more spiritually healthy than the alternative me only attitude.
If my kids were given toxic toys- I would find a way to weed them out later. One day, two days, does not kill kids. I would pull them without hurting them.

Whether or not I'll make them eat it instead of the birthday food depends on if the food really takes into account allergies, if there is the possibility of mixing it with one they are allergic (like having coconut sweets next to non coconut ones) and ultimately how much I can trust the parents of the other kid. I vividly remember a mother and toddler group party which involved a vegetarian mother of eleven children. They constantly had colds, viruses, infections, conjunctivitis, head lice, impetigo and ringworm. They were all very pale, undersized and grossly underweight.
At an end of term party we made sure to make plenty of vegetarian options for her three toddlers. Her three year old daughter disappeared from the room so there was a little frantic searching. I found her under the serving table, hidden by the tablecloth. She was eating the very last one of a whole plate of sandwiches. Tuna, ham, patè, chicken, roast beef... she had ignored the vegetarian platters completely.
The wee thing looked so utterly contented. The mother wanted to call an ambulance! My sister-in-law, a neurosurgeon, checked the wee lamb and told the mother that, at worst, she may have a slightly upset stomach. She did not.
After this, her husband put his foot down and started cooking for the children. He respected her choice for herself but was sick of her neglect. They divorced within a year and he was awarded full residential custody. Within five years she was married again with eight stepchildren and six of her own, including two sets of twins. The cycle of abuse continued.

As someone who had anxiety over purity of food (organic, local, could never touch plastic, etc) that got so bad I developed an eating disorder, this is. I was anorexic and kids raised like this are more likely to develop eating disorders. Explaining that certain foods are for special occasions is fine, but never teaching that kind of moderation can lead to binge eating disorder, bulimia, or anxiety induced anorexia/ortherexia.

    • @azulposeido
      @azulposeido 10 місяців тому +1

I thing the key here is the anxious personality. It seems that everyone that had a negative experience with crunchy parents had a bad experience because of their personalities: anxious, controlling, micromanaging…The issue was mainly the delivery. Instead of crunchy substitute a religión, political view or whatever because if your parent is narcissistic, anxious, defensive…it is all going to end bad.

As a child he never really went against his mom's will and accepted all the restriction. Now he's in college with me and his diet consists exclusively in instant noodles, snickers bars and ben&jerry's.
