I suppose, hypothetically, someone could rent an excavator for $500-600 a day, plus maybe $200-250 in fuel.
Compared to the hourly/daily cost of renting a 100+hp sports boat, plus the cost of marine diesel, this person might save somewhere in the range of $200-$500/day by renting an excavator instead of a power boat.
This is of course entirely hypothetical, and should not be attempted.

something folk may have missed with the rowing excavators? The single one was pulling the bucket through the water like it digs. The guys here are rowing sideways. Less surface area creating force. With the "Pull" method, you're literally using the properties of the bucket to move not the sides.
    Just an observation.

    G'day,
    Ahoy ..!
Ten years ago I was wearing a
Potato-grade Headcamera, while working to set up and operate a Firefighting Airbase, and while about to connect the Water Hose to an
Air-Tractor AT-802 which had landed and was about to be refilled with it's Engine idling....
However, when I saw a Patch of Skin torn off and dangling from the inner side of the Ventral-Fin on the bottom of the Right-hand Stabilisor ("Tailplane")...; I signalled the Pilot to shut his Engine down, which he did, then got out, and we conferred.
I admitted to being something of an accomplished Aeroplanologist, and pointed out that,
    1) a Stone had broken through a previous Patch over old Stone Damage, on the same location..., and 2) this probably happened as he last landed - and that if left like that then at Full Power the Propeller-Blast may well extend the torn Aluminium Skin, enabling the thus loose flapping Patch to interfere with - and quite possibly jamming..., the Gap between the Elevator & Stabilisor..., Rendering the Aeroplane uncontrollable in Pitch...., And 3) That I had some particularly strong Duct-Tape on hand, with which I was prepared to effect a
Servicable Field Repair...; to which proposal he agreed, after considerable searching conversation as to my previous doings with Hairygoplanes...(!).
At that point I stopped the Camera, performed the Repair, and videoed the result...
Before flying it, my work was examined by the pilot of a different AirTractor - who was a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, and after he'd viewed the
"Before" Video and having inspected the Repair, he actually
Passed the Aircraft as Fit to Fly..., Operationally, over the Fireground - until it could be properly repaired after the
Section-44 Statewide Bushfire Emergency was over.
Because the damage was done to a previous Skin- Repair, I wanted the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to be made aware of the
Recurring issue..., so I posted the Videos to my YT Channel, wrote a Letter with Diagrams and extensive explanations included, and
Snail-mailed the lot offto CASA...., suggesting that they look at the Videos in YT and figure out how to stop Air Tractors from trying to
    Stone their own
    Tailfeathers
    To death...,
    Whenever landing on
    Gravel Airstrips...(!).
By the time the NSW Volunteer Rural Fire Service tried to chastise me..., for posting "Unauthorised Fireground Footage onto Social Media..."(!) ; I was already in possession of CASA's Snailmailed
    "Thankyou !" letter....
So the RFS Media Unit was instructed to go away and practice trying to
    Piss up a
Rope which is tied to the
    Overhanging branch of any
    Convenient Tree...(!).
Two years later, I was notified of a Freedom Of Information Request to see my Submission having been made, to CASA ; so - apparently somebody somewhere (at the Air Tractor Factory in the USA, perhaps...?) took notice, possibly of my scathing criticism of the AT-802 Designer's decision to try to "hide" the retrofitted Triplane Tailfins (neccessary after extending the Nose when deleting the old heavy Radial Engines, and replacing them with lightweight Turboprop units...) under the Stabilisors - where they're sitting-Ducks for all the Rocks which are regularly thrown out by the Tyres - when landing on Gravel...
If you backtrack me to my
    "Personal Aeroplanology..."
    Playlist, therein lies a
Nest..., of Uploads covering the whole incident ,
    Beginning with,
"Firebird 251, AirTractor (VH-WTJ) Airframe Damage..."
    followed by
    "Tape-Repaired Firebomber..."
then there's a Video of it's first flight with the Repair - after which it flew Waterbombing Missions the rest of the day.
There are another 7 Videos posted consecutively, variously regarding aspects of the matter, at that time, all on the same Scroll ; as is my reaction to the subsequent,
    "F.O.I. Request..., Paranoia...; W.T.F...!?!?".
Two years after the whole event had occurred (!).
    So, there you go, and now you know that - as far as I'm aware ;
    My Duct-Tape Repair...
To a 3,000 Horsepower Waterbomber, lofting 3-Ton Hoppers of Water onto the Fireground, cruising at 180 Knots..., might perhaps possibly hold something of a Record for Airspeed and Engine-Power known to have been successfully
All held together by a homemade Duct-Tape Airframe-Repair
Effected by a self-taught Ultralight Propeller-carver..., and then duly signed-off on - by a qualified
L.A.M.E. to return to Operational Duties, during an Active
    Bushfire Emergency.
We only had 3 AirTractors..., and it was a Breakout Day...; so...
Perhaps, because my Duct-Tape kept all 3 Waterbombers Servicable..., all afternoon ; we lost no Houses that day.
    Nor any People...
    Which was quite the
    Optimal
    Outcome ; in my view.
And, then, the Raindance kicked in, and the second day's Firefighting was totally washed-out...; and had to be cancelled.
    True Story...(!).
With the Videos posted a full decade ago, plus coverage 8 years old of the subsequent
    FOI Paperwork from CASA...
    All to better
    Nail
    Down the
    Reality...;
    Of what did indeed occurr,
    In real life.
    Unscripted (!).
    Have a good one...
    Stay safe.
    ;-p
    Ciao !

Planes used to be built from wood and canvas (instead of steel and aluminium, oar thin plastic in case of these light planes) and flew just fine. So fixing one with duct tape doesn't sound impossible. As long as the force carrying frame is still fine.
Obviously the tape won't last, so it's not a permanent fix, but a one-way trip to escape from the middle of nowhere .... yeah, that can work.

The shit people can do in a digger is limitless. I'd wager every digger myth is totally plausible. You just need a lad with too much time in his hands and a few years working The machines.
