I NEVER REALIZED THERE WERE SO SO MANY OPERA LOVERS. IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY. AS IT HAPPENS, I AM SITTING IN A HOSPITAL ROOM BESIDE MY PARTNER,S BEDSIDE. WE HAVE BEEN TOGETHER together ALMOST 46 YEARS BEDSIDE to gather in capital letters WAITING FOR HIS DEMISE. I JUST KEEP LISTONING TO OPERA AND OVATURES, PLAYING A WAITING SANAREO. I ASK, IS THERE ANY RATIONALE TO THIS ?
Yes, a great performance of a great production of a great or even just a good opera can do that. I would recommend Werther, the Benoit Jacquot production in Paris in 2011, with Jonas Kaufmann singing Werther.
Thank you so much for sharing this film. I watched it long time ago together with my father DFD and rediscovered it now here! It is as Almaviva that I saw him most often on the opera stages of Berlin, Munich and Salzburg. So wonderful memories!
The performances given here by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey, Mirella Freni, and Maria Ewing are simply EXTRAORDINARY! They are each so animated, so completely at one with their roles while at the same time singing superlatively. But all the singing in this recording is of the highest calibre. Fischer-Dieskau and Prey were operatic giants!
Prey had such a voice. It never lost power regardless of how high or low in his range he was singing. It kept the strength and weight. I'd love to wake up with that voice.
Another thing, I just love the rivalry between Fischer-Dieskau and Prey, you hardly get to see them both on stage together. Two of Germany's greatest lyric baritones duke it out in the most fashionable way possible.
I note that some don’t like this! Are they serious? This is a truely great cast, singing this marvellous opera! It is a joy from beginning to end!! The word, “sluggish” is used! I am amazed! The singing is beyond good and it looks beautiful! The acting is great! It is a delight!!
The news of Freni's death brings me here tonight, a wonderful return to one of the first and most memorable operatic performances I have ever encountered.
I first saw this very version when I was 10 years old and absolutely fell in love with it. Now I'm more than twice as old, but still watch it almost every year❤️
This magnificent rendition is a cruel reminder of just what we lost with the untimely death of Ponnelle in 1988, at only fifty-six years of age. He was in the process of filming all his Mozart productions when he died, and though thankfully he left us films or videos of Mitridate, Idomeneo, Figaro, Cosi, Zauberflöte and Titus, he unfortunately had not yet filmed his definitive versions of Lucio Silla, Entführung and Don Giovanni. We must be grateful for what we do have from him, which includes Rigoletto, Manon, Falstaff, Madama Butterfly, the three big Rossini comedies, Tristan, Mathis der Maler and the three surviving Monteverdi operas. Stage productions that he was planning to film and which his death prevented were Otello, Flying Dutchman, Traviata, Carmen, Norma, Turandot, Tosca and the complete Ring. Alas, what might have been!
God! This rendition actually brings Beaumarchais' characters to life, as in a real three dimensional person. Thank you Karl Böhm for one of the greatest productions of all time!
Opera, Fitness are one in the same thing ! And thank you to Ponnelle, whose vision has remained, after all these years, fresh and new and relevant, more than many contemporary stagings of this opera.
Opera, Fitness are one in the same thing ! And thank you to Lorenzo DaPonte, who never gets enough credit for his work. A catholic priest with multiple mistresses amd four kids... how do you overlook a guy like that?! LOL Best production of this work here on YT imo.
This is a superb interpretation by Professor Karl Bohm. Very good orchestral sound and very skillful singing by the top level soloists. A real pleasure to listen to this beautiful performance.
KTK VAULT I'll take it a step further. The most unique female opera vocalist of the 20th century, who can you compare? See "Making of West Side Story" on YT, Kiri sings "There's a place for us" - which somehow did NOT make it to the record that was released from these sessions. Maestro Bernstein, no slouch he, heard Kiri's voice and "just had to" have her sing this tune. It gave me *goose bumps*. I don't think anyone was more perfect for Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Ditto here, Mozart would have LOVED you Kiri. And the fact you are a Pacific Islander would've tickled him pink (well there weren't too many Maori in Europe at the time lol).
Kiri y Mirella, preciosas!! Soberbia puesta en escena de J.P. Ponnelle en paz descanse. Todo el elenco excelente. Las mejores interpretaciones que he visto.
I am very much intoxicated with this performance. This is the best version that I have ever seen, which I would like to attribute to both Kiri Te Kanawa and the conductor Karl Boehm. Really excellent !!!!
I looked so long to find this Version.Thank you very much for this beautiful upload. I really enjoy this Opera.Specialy Mr Dieskau was one of the greatest Count de Almaviva. And of course Lady Te Kanawa too. Thanks once again from Germany
the best version out.Best for choice of artists, acting and production I recorded it in 1984 WHAT HAPPENED TO YHE ENGLISH SUB-TITLES? The twists and turns are hilarious if you understand the plot
John attree, I agree that the libretto is hilariously funny if you understand the text. I have known the opera since I was a kid because my parents used the opera for introducing us to the basic facts of sex. Certainly unconventional - but the plot of the opera is impossible to understand if one is unaware of what may happen between humans in a bed. Heck, the opera actually starts in a bed - although it is still under construction :) :) :) Lorenzo da Ponte was a wonderful librettist, and Mozart knew how to translate the humor as well as the serious aspects into one of he greatest musical works ever. I have English subs btw...
Madame: I loved your recording of the Strauss Four Last Songs... but I was unaware of this recording. Your "Contessa perdono" brings tears to my eyes... thank you.
I too, but there are quite a few. There's a playlist by user "Chaim Mendel" called "Opera with english subtitles" that leads to quite a few. Many of these rely on UA-cam's close-captioning, but others have them on the video itself.
José António I agree with the last part but you NEED to learn the words in the first place, hence 1 or 2 viewings with subtitles. And yes the lyrics are essential because of how he uses them.
@@vonditters856 Actually, if you have the time, just do a search for "Marriage of Figaro libretto, English" and read it like a book. It doesn't take much time. Then you'll know what's happening when you watch.
An interesting film. Subtitles or not, there's so much going on that I have to read a synopsis before the next scene. Mozart loved this kind of thing. And lets face it, Lorenzo DaPonte never gets the credit he deserved, for this and especially for Don Giovanni, which was likely the greatest opera ever, and assuredly #1 in classical italian opera. The turns of the phases in italian ("Sembra fatto inver per me") and the rhyming is exquisite. Mozart wanted the poetry to be subtle and unobtrusive, and DaPonte came through like a boss! Comparing this to DG, you can see how after this the Recetativo Secco was something wanted to marginalize, preferring DG's major use of Recetativo Stromentato.

Only Mozart could turn opera buffa
into opera Epic-Lyrical-Burlesque.
Very diffiicult compared. Here Mozart has been done a magnificent opera
Listening to the tempo of the overture, I think "how lucky Karl Böhm did not make this race out of this" :)

Is this the only comic for Mirella Freni? I love her in this role of Suzanna.
48:28 is this the only scene where the count is laughing?
