This is less about technical singing and more of a method to overcome mental limitations and emotional stunting from the fear of criticism and judgment. I hope a lot more people find this video and discover their voices over time.
I don't know why but I bursted out crying after singing along with you in my blanket. I think something inside my head unlocked, some mental blocker that I wasn't even aware of. I think this was the first time I've felt fully free singing, unafraid of being heard and judged. Thank you so much for sharing this idea with us. For formulating it so well, for taking it beyond a simple trick to muffle out your sound, but for also communicating it on an emotional and psychological level.
Same here. I literally have just busted out in release and crying. I had no idea how scared I am to be heard and Im normally sp loud. But this is clearly the mental block that has me forming bad habits. I want to be heard and I also my psychi must not want me to be heard because Im afraid. I had no idea thay evrty time I feel unheard that I actually stop singing poorly and stop with blocks on my false vocal fold being constricted and what seems like spme other constricted areas.
@@Catthepunk I thought for the longest time I'd never be able to sing, and actually sound ok. Too many people told me over the years-Icouldn't, I don't have the voice, etc.. This is INCREDIBLE! I’m moving out into an apartment for the first time and I really needed this! SOMETIMES YOU JUST WANT TO SING FOR YOURSELF, not for everyone around can hear you ❤️❤️❤️
yes 100%!! I feel you on this. I try to find time each week to just sing for me and living in NYC that can be... a little uncomfortable. this trick totally helped.
What a coincidence 😁 I just "sang" into my blanket yesterday. Although it was more screaming to let go of anger, tension and frustration. I also let music play and sang along sometimes into the blanket 😄👏🏼 Great!
I always say that a good teacher (in any field) is someone who can think FROM the mindset of the student. This sort of intuitive lead allows the student to be cultivated from within, rather simply directed from without. So, thank you always providing such a well rounded experience! I truly grow through your videos!
As a teacher I can say that I'm trying to do that but it is super hard. Because every student is so different, and as a student I often have a different goal from other students (I'm a foreign language teacher and my goal is actually to just learn about the language or how it works and functions versus being fluent in communication, I always put it into the secondary position in terms of goals) but it's very important to understand what students need and want and that actually allows me to kind of resonate with them in a way that can make them understand the material better
@@atriyakoller136 You're fine as long as you have some EMPATHY towards each human you teach / encounter. Wow this was incredible. Not only great for singing but there is deep therapeutic value in this exercise for those affected by trauma in their childhood.
Love this idea, wish I'd known this when I was an apartment-dweller! Two things I noticed when I tried it just now: I laughed myself silly at the thought of my husband walking in on me trying to smother myself, and when I attempted said pillow-singing the cats ran in to check on me with very concerned expressions and meows. 😂
This is exactly what my heart and soul needed 🖤 I feel like I've lost my voice ever since I moved into the college dorms, and then every year after living with roommates or in small apartment. Thank you so much for this! I'm excited to start truly singing again.
Thank you for this because I have pretty much said annoying the crap out of my neighbors is worth not losing my voice and how much progress I’ve made as a singer.
Oh my gosh… I needed this tip desperately. We live Downstairs. We sold our home in town and build a beautiful place downstairs to help our grandmother out. She lived to be 97. I could sing my heart out down there, because she really didn’t hear me much annnnd… she wasn’t a singer. Then, in the last year and a half… in-laws moved in upstairs. He is an incredible singer and piano player. So I stopped singing fully. Not ‘loud’ as you’d mentioned… but, I sand before in a way that was my true voice, fully supported and flexible. Well, when they moved in… I kid you not, it was like he was in the other room, listening and critiquing. So, I got quieter. I noticed flaws and mistakes. I didn’t ‘express’ properly and healthily. That holding back… hurt my voice. Soon, I was clearing my throat, and just getting worse. Now, with the information your video… I will be able to reach my natural, comfortable level of pressure and easy of just letting it out as pretty as it can be, without the fear of undo and imagined criticism. Thanks so much. I know this is a perfect example of what you were trying to help us with. So I hope my story will encourage you in knowing you’ve really made a difference in not only my singing, but in my daily life. Thank you so much. God bless🙂🙏🏼🙌🏾🎶
Yes, I would love more videos on this as well! You are so correct that the psychology of performing isn't talked about openly very often. The more we can have these conversations the more we can really help with the emotional and mental health challenges that come with being in this industry.
Super helpful tips! Tysm ❤ As a songwriter I am always needing to play around with my voice to figure out the melodies. I feel really self concious about anyone hearing me and it can really put a damper on the creative process.
I feel so mad, I really have never been alone my entire life and it sucks, thank you for helping me quite a bit more, I'm afraid of just everyone telling me to shut up
I’ve always had a fear of public speaking and a fear of being judged. As I get older it’s gotten worse. I can’t tell you how much I need this right now. Thank you for addressing this.❤
I swear you are reading my mind and creating videos for the exact things I am struggling with (in this case) or needing to work on (in past cases). From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU 🥰✨
I've always sang in the basement of my childhood home. The basement had great acoustics, and it was my safe place to do many other fun activities, play ping pong, roller skate, pool, dance, watch t.v. and sometimes just to have an extra quiet place to fall asleep. 😊
I learned how to sing quietly because of Morissette because she’s such a good speech level singer. It’s all about speech. Singing is just supported speaking.
This was the most helpful thing i’ve learned over anything! because im always that kind of person who hesitates for the exact same reasons you mentioned and never really thought about mentioning it to anyone cuz i thought it’s a me problem so cuz all of that i can only enjoy practicing when im home alone Thanks you sooo much for this💗💗💗
This video just changed my life ....wow thank you so much wow wow wow wow didn't realize I was walking into such honest introspection of myself and I couldn't be happier this moment came!!!! Omg thank you what!?!?! Ahhh I'm so grateful right now.
It's really about finding the space where you overcome fear of judgement/ an overly critical environment and ask yourself: am i expressing myself fully? 1. Do you hesitate or push more under pressure? Between those is freedom, freedom of expression 2. what do u need to feel safe? 3. Sing into a blanket and see what it feels like then ask: did I express myself fully? And try it out loud. This can help activate intuitive expression.
Thank you so much! It was so much easier to sing. Now I know that I could never sing to my fullest potential, even after so much practice, because of my fear of judgement. The cover trick helped a lot! :)
Your most recent videos about mindset for singers and inner self-talk have been incredibly helpful! The video about envisioning yourself using your voice in the highest level you wish, and then viscerally feeling those emotions that you will experience in that moment, was extremely powerful! It helped me past a mental block that I have had since I was young. Thank you, and keep it up!
The ‘belt box’ is good for this too, pillows are cheaper, freedom of expression can often be overblown, you articulated so well the balance I think of as no man’s land, the sensation of onset as well as freedom and flow is important, all need to be explored without inhibitions. Thank you 💫
Dang, was that you playing the piano? I knew you were pretty and so smart about singing and human voice anatomy. But, that is one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen.
I usually do my exercises into a pillow, or into my bare arm for even more deadening. Another tip, if you play guitar or piano: I have a linen mask from covid days. It has an adjustable strap for a tight fit. It also has a pocket for a filter, but instead I put a pair of socks in there. It mutes my full voice by probably 60%. So you can sing and play with no worries.
