One of my first singing lessons I was asked to sing Hallelujah. Half way through the song my teacher stopped me and asked me if I was actually reading or understanding the lyrics and she felt it was like hearing someone read from their grocery shopping list. Her analogy hit me right as I still think about it today when writing a song or learning to cover a song. Sure I may hit the right pitch but if there's no "Me" in the understanding of a heartfelt song, or a happy tune or a sad ballad then the audience just finds something else that's more interesting
You could be the first (and best) psycho therapist specialized in aiding vocalists who's voices been affected by traumatic experiences. Some sort of a specialized life coach for people like me with stage anxiety.
You have no idea how my life changed because of your effort put into these videos. You made singing a joy not only to practice but think about and analyze.
my voice is more on the husky side but just like you i've been kinda imitating the tone of the people around me. this helped me so much. i feel so much more connected to my body...like...everything that i wanted my voice to be...it feels like it is....thank you so much miz madeline you're so gifted amd skilled at what you do
Fascinating and very helpful. I've noticed I can sometimes get to a place where my singing is much more natural, much more me, and felt it was something to do with being fully in the music and not my head but wasn't sure how to help myself get there from where I usually am. The idea of a place where "nothing needs to happen" really resonates, and the concept of "embodiment" feels like the key. So I need to be fully in my body to be fully in the music. I love the "buffet" analogy too - I find myself putting in little riffs that become habits but actually often the song is more powerful without them. This video has explained why. So much food for thought. Can't wait to get the house to myself to try the exercises! Thank you for putting this out. xx
Before you asked "what note was that?" at 8:50, I already felt like Ab was the answer! Here's why: It reminded me of Geoff Castelluci's cover of Ain't No Sunshine, which I remember that he sings in Abm! BTW, my Exercise 1 note is the G an octave below the Ab mentioned in that question.
Thank you so much for contributing to my channel! I'm so glad to hear that these lessons are helping you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your vocal journey!
I'll have my first stage performance on 9th September. I hope I'll sing well and make you proud.I do not have a private coach and never went to any singing academy. I learned singing from watching vocal Coaches like you on UA-cam so I consider you my teacher. I'll always be grateful for being able to learn from you 🫂💜
Okay, what I want to know is how do I deal with the harshest critic, that is myself? Always finding fault no matter what others say, it really drags me down.
