- 1984 Ocean of Soul performed "Neck" for the first time on the field against Jackson State. The Ocean was the first band to play this song. It was first played against Southern University 3rd weekend of September 1984 in the stands and now has been played by more bands than you can count. Ocean History. Footage provided by Ronald B. They all in their late fifties now 😊 great show
Yes we are. I'll be 59 years old coming this October, to be exact...😏
Yes Sir....TxSU's staple song and entrance !!! I try to tell these young' uns .........DO WHAT MADE YOU GREAT !!! From a PVU alum 💜💛
I remember this TSU marching into Grambling stadium playing this song! They were very good and deep back then. All of the SWAC bands were better back then.
Still the best Neck I've ever heard.
School back then was a different type and more elevated pride and hype…. I wish it was still lit like this 🔥
I'm a SU Jag all day! Much respect to TxSU for doing it first and sounding great! SWAC Bands are the Best!
Human jukebox!
Let the record show!
Now its grown so much that ive heard quite a few pwi bands playing it. Damn damn damn
When TXsu had a huge band
God Bless you Terrance Cannon
GOD has certainly blessed us all. Ocean4Life
I like this tempo for "Neck"
Who knew... they were deep
Wow please keep this available
Went down a "Neck" rabbit hole and so glad it ended with this. The song sounds ageless and still so classic, in a funky kinda way.
Is there anything more beautiful than this?
This my first time hearing this . Instagram brought me here !
My favorite version
THIS WHERE NECK BECAME POPULAR
Yessszzz love it 🌊🌊🌊
That was cold
Ok That's where Miles got that entrance from.
Imitation is the best form of flattery
I was just about to say the same thing lol
More views on this video please
🗣️ MOTION, BRING BACK THIS MARCH! Seems like ever since Danielle became coach, the march has changed… and, it’s upsetting me and my homegirls 😩
Uhm…that’s not a fair statement if I’m being honest. The march has changed a lot over the years and it really has/had nothing to do with Dannie. :)
Best neck version! I like it slow. We make it very ghetto in Georgia 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hear there's some debate about whether Texas Southern or Norfolk State was the first HBCU band to cover this song. Can anyone enlighten us on the history of who performed it first? Thanks.
I'm glad you asked. The Ocean of Soul performed it first. We have another band that can corroborate it. Southern University Jukebox. In 1984 we played Southern during our 3rd game every year. It would have been September 15, 1984. We played it in the stands on them. You can ask them cause they definitely remember. Assistant Band Director, Prof. Sam Jackson wrote that song.
@@terrancecannon7048 Ok thanks. HBCU Gameday reposted an article on this a few days ago on Facebook and naturally it generated some comments. I read that NSU performed it first but that may not have been true. They only popularized it which that can be debatable. Thanks for sharing the insight. For me I first heard an HBCU play that song at the CIAA Tournament when it was here in Raleigh in the early 2000s. Only last year did I learn that it was an original Cameo song. Always thought that it was an original, unique HBCU favorite. Now I know a bit more. 1️⃣❤️ Bro!
@@ThinkWolfpack I've had to correct so many people and inform them that the HBCU Gameday article is incorrect. Probably the first time a MEAC school played it but was well after TSU played it(given the date indicated in the article). Also I was actually at the game when TSU first played it. I'm a PVAMU grad but have to give TSU their props.
So txsu did this entrance before miles did? Or did miles stole it? 😭
Yeah TSU did entrance first. One of the directors of Miles admitted that they got this from TSU.
@@hoops24bball ohhh ok. Wow lol
The Aristocrats of Bands at the real TSU has the best version of "Neck" ....IJS, this was cute...
Dang neck all the way back to 84? Stop playing.
