"Neck" Comparison Study - HBCU Marching Bands
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- This is a study of the different styles and arrangements of Cameo's "Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck" featuring HBCU Marching Bands Alabama State University, Jackson State University, Norfolk State University, Bethune-Cookman University, Southern University, Florida A&M University, Texas Southern University, South Carolina State University
Bethune plays in a whole different key, and does it well. That's an automatic win to me😁🔥
I am a huge Alabama fan but no one does it like LSU's band. They slayyyyyyy "Neck"! ua-cam.com/video/mJFJHcH3dTQ/v-deo.html
@@uanonymous1090 they’re alright with neck
@@THEMIGHTYPANTHERS97 They dont do it like LSU and I am a Alabama fan. LSU's Trumpets and Tubas are more technically sound and precise. BCUs usually just blast their notes and are loud. There is a huge difference in the quality of sound between the two. Just because you are loud doesn't make you good. Bethune cant compare to LSU's band period!
the video doesn't do justice for Bethune... and trust me I LOVE my show bands.. but Bethune just does magic with Neck.. to hear them live, in-person... it's beyond words.
@@uanonymous1090 I know a few bands that play Neck better than LSU
The cymbals for Florida A&M were going ham
Bethune-Cookman Univ, best played.
FAMU, best hyped while playing.
JSU, best power.
WHOEVER that was at the end credits, BEST ALL AROUND!!!!!
Watching all of these bands play a high speed version of "Neck", makes me appreciate the super slow, almost "Chopped and Screwed" version of "Neck" that the Aristocrat of Bands ( Tennessee State ) play.
The best band in the land
I love how each school has added their own regional touches. It is a classic regardless of version, but I will always prefer the GoGo infused versions of the DMV.
Yeah especially the version Howard does since they’re from DC, the birthplace of Go-go.
FAMU won me over with that cymbal line! I wish I could have seen this when I was playing cymbals in high school!
famu represented properly as always.... but I love all my hbcu's different renditions & flavors.. peace & love yall.
-Norfolk State's version is the best ! The way they played it wanted you to get up & party & enjoy it with them...
Talking out the side of your neck, is a trademark for all HBCU bands. I marched at Livingstone College in the early 1990's and it's amazing how everyone comments on how these bigger bands can rock this song, but dont sleep on them smaller bands. They will wax you right off your own field. We were known as "The little band with the big band sound."
What does the song title mean anyway?
TNSTATE AOB has the most unique/incomparable/original "Neck" versions, idk how we missed the lineup!
ua-cam.com/video/hGdOSJ-7h_s/v-deo.html
Exactly. I prefer what TSU plays. Marched only 95 and 96 so but I am biased LOL
SCSU has the most original and by the far the best rendition of Neck... in my opinion!
SU and JSU are definitely known for blastin nearly all songs they play
SCSU got the cleanest bass line of this song hands down. But the best version of the song is the one being played while rolling the credits.... IJS
Agree completely and I'm an SU Jaguar Alum. When I listed to SC State (my home state btw), I was like, wow. But whoever's is doing it in the credits takes the cake.
Lol yo y'all both lying to yourselves. TSU(TENN ST.) Started this chant back in the 80's when cameos song talking out the side of ya neck first came out and has been a staple in EVERY HBCU band that is around now. Check it out for yourselves. Just type in Tenn St Neck and listen to the superiority of the sounds... If FAMU band members can give them they praise and props then everyone gotta follow suit. I'm a Tenn St fan for life...but the FAMU band is just better, but not when it comes to this song.
@@sxyalpha1906 It's from Drumline Live
As usual Texas Southern has tge best version but Overall they all have good pieces except the last band. NSU What da hell kind of train wreck was that I expect better. Remember more is not necessarily better! GQ chapter 🤟🏾
they were doing to much it takes from the original version
I'm in marching band and I love when we play this song! We all just start jamming out and dancing, it's just such a fun time!
+IIAmandaII i agree :)
same with one of my favorite we play
Whoever that is playing during the credits shoulda been in this video. 😂😂😂💯💯💯
That was "Drumline Live" in the credits. Not a college band.
Logan Hal Leonard used the audio from Drumline live
Jackson clearly sounds the best but didn't have the better arrangement! SCSU and BCU HAD THE BWST ARRANGEMENTS!
I normally do not have a comment on band videos, but I had to throw in my two cents. Tennessee State University's Aristocrat of Bands version is by far the most original arrangement of "Neck" and should have been on the list. I just heard the same sped-up version of a Cameo classic. Slow it down so we can hear you!!!! #BIGBLUERISING
TSU Aristocrat of Bands playing Neck - 2013 Gateway Classic
BCU Hands down
Were is UAPB now they clearly have the best neck point blank period
Correct!! UAPB lets go lions.....
Facts!
TSU's version is dope. but on this ASU, FAMU, BCU
I'm sorry ya'll but FAMU's Marching 100 in my opinion took it to a whole new level, when they started singing in harmony! ...and that funky bass line remix! Yes Suh!!!
Marching 100 ALL Day!
im sorry calvin, this guy letson puts lsu name in the hat and they're not involved in the comparison nor FSU im just agitating him because i don't like lsu, but them Southern University boyz tops the neck comparison playa !!
No sir! 100 all day everyday!!
iyounh954 all day without fail
BCU & FAMU in one division then u got JSU & SU in the other... but that's my opinion :-)
This was really good!!!! Lol 😂 the excerpt from the credits clearly was the best one!!! But for the sake of the film I’m gonna say I enjoyed SU and JSU then BCU🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 SU comes in sooo solid, JSU just a powerhouse, and BCU got sooo much class!!!
Who were those 3 kids in Southern's band that looked like they were in time out. lol.
Robert Thomas I
Robert Thomas they forgot they instruments in the band room b4 they got on the bus😂😂😂
😂😂💀
We are musically talented, instrumentally creative and have sound of no other. Thats why we are on top of the Marching Band World. There are no holes in our music and we play together. Our band does not try to blast you out of the stadium. We are consistent on the field, on the stage and in the class room!!! Take notes and when we are on the field during halftime thats class time for you. Bethune-Cookman Marching Wildcats!!!
Shout out to one of the greatest funk bands of all time, Cameo, for creating this legendary tune!
I played in TSU's Ocean of Soul in the 80's and will challenge anybody to find an early version of Neck than the halftime show TSU vs JSU 1984 when the song first came out. TSU is still playing the original version we played and has played it every year since. Count it 29 years and going. Also 1984 Ocean was the first to play Tribute to Bob Marley. Not bragging just the facts.
i march for the ocean now! can confirm we play neck the same way 👍🏾
Oh yes Big Brother T! We’ll challenge ANYBODY who’s says different. TXSU arranged and played Neck FIRST when Cameo first put it out in 1984. #Ocean🌊 #NeverDuplicated
SCSU, BCU & NSU, these 3 Meac bands have the best and most distinctive versions of NECK in my opinion.
Who's playing the credits ? Cause that's the best of all
Nene J Vlogs that's a jwpepper arrangement
That was "Drumline Live" in the credits. Not a college band.
Stra8 UP!!!!
when it comes down to arrangement, perfect ratio between balance, precision/accuracy, and power (from top to bottom..you have to have a solid tuba line) then I have to give it to BCU
Southern University got the best Neck Arrangement in the world
Southern Univeristy all day!!! Go Jags!!! #1 always
SU all day. Hands down. Even though famu has a very similar composition of the song. But the sheer size of famu gives them a powerful sound. But su is smaller and packs a bigger punch
Real talk while at Norfolk State, I thought we was the only ones that actually played it
Alabama A&M plays it the best period
Correct ✌ that Tuba breakdown is something !
how could you not have ga
ambling in this when neck is damn near the school song
Cookman hands down got this one on lock. That swing it way better. The tubas crank hard too. Got forget the band singing in 3 part harmony as well. Another level. Shout to all the HBCUs though.
Come On Now; We ALL Know Who Got The BEST Neck! SU Human Jukebox! But I Liked SCSU! They Murdered It! Love The Arrangements.
Neck will never get old. Coming from someone that was class of 2005 Camden Fairview High
SCSU Marching 101 on point as always!!! Kept it funky!!!
SCSU's Neck is the best so far!!! The chords and the tubas are AMAZING!!!!
They are all pretty good. To me the winner goes to BCU. The Tubas made the difference for sure.
JSU, SU, and ASU
I have heard this song probably 1000 times and no band plays like "The World Famed" Grambling State University Marching Band. As they say, "often imitated but never duplicated."
HAHA. Grambling ass boy .
SirGeekz Sorry sir but I did not attend Grambling State University.
grambling is the best fa sho
Gram has the best composition of Neck.
JSU rocked that thang out. I give it to BC for having a different version and it jammed
NSU all day long!!! Behold the GREEN and GOLD
JSU sounds the best, then maybe TxSu or SU!The band at the end turned it into a gospel praise song, lol.I thought them lil boys caught the ghost, lol!
Although I am a Marching 101 Alumni,From a musical professional's view point, I have to take my hat off to BCU. Although SU has the power behind theirs, BCU is just that balance between arrangement, power, and cleanliness. You may now bring on the negative comments.
Sorry nothing beats the original "Human Jukebox" Sssssss U
I refused to go there because the Sousas played WAY too many high notes 😭
@@reggieb5324 yeah them some lung burners 😂😂
#NoFilter I wonder if I’ll be eligible after I get out.. I mean I’m only 22 lol
@@reggieb5324 lol should be
I really really hate criticizing people's band videos, but dude, I'm reluctant to do so. With a Classic song like neck, as long as it's been around, You couldn't get better footage of these bands to do an unintentional bias comparison?. and i say, unintentional because I'd like to think you didn't choose these particular clips to make some bands stand out more than others.
I agree 100%. There is no way (hopefully) that these performances were anywhere near the level these college bands should be able to play. And many bands around the country far better with this song than any of these.
I like southern's and the one at the end
This a nice video.. I wish we had this arrangement out.. back in the early 90's..
Grambling's Neck sounds a bit better.
Never heard UAPB, but I love the way Tennessee State plays it. We play UAPB for homecoming this year so I'll have to check them out. All of the bands sound good though.
UAPB has a nice rendition of this as well, nice vid thumbs up
I played Tuba @ Morgan and I was not feeling Bethune but FAM was nuts with it the cymbal line SHEESH!!!
Jackson smashing this song!!!! the arrangement...so so, but delivery on 100
Like Bethune Cookman version the best
As most people here choose sides on whose band is better, I see this video as getting into the spirit of football. Being in the stands watching the game and listening to the band belt out their music. To hear NECK is to be at a game, love it!!!
I placed it in the credits, but if you didn't catch it the last arrangement of "Neck" is played by Drumline Live arranged by Raymond James Rolle II
A very nice post! I enjoyed that. I am a CSU alumna. I wonder what the Marauders do with this song?
Bama State...good tempo---would be flawless with SCSU's tuba part...parts have nice features...love the call and answer part with the trumpets...NICE!
I love Bethune Cookman
Who is playing during the credits?! That version of NECK is EVERYTHING!!!!
the boom edges out su in this video.
but I must admit uapb is the best I've ever heard play it.
Love the boom!
The Spartan Legion forever! Behold The Green and Gold! 🙌🏾
Texas Southern -Musical NECK luv it, nice go go minuscule vibe ♡
SCSU101 - Chant 1st, Flowing Funky & Nice Changes, Lush each section, Tubas Shine ♡
Alabama - Musical, Changes, Distinct 'Talking out side of ya neck', Drums&Tubas Shine ♡
FAMU 100 -Crisp on full sound, Tubas, Piccolos, Cymbals Shine, Total sound Funk N Swing ♡
Southern -Jumped right in lol, Loud, a bit incohesive N disjointed, distinct on 'Talking part' ♡
Bethune - Came in like a dj kept reverbing ♡ Def GO-GO Nice, Tubas N Drums, Issa VYBE ♡
Jackson -Loud, Screamers no control, drowning others out, a bit disjointed arrgmnt potential ♡
Norfolk -A bit fast, woosah, tried Go Go flow, should have slowed it, potential in arrangement ♡
But um ending credits.... That's it for that Go Go flow N Big band sound...
Love to all... HBCU.... BEBE Flautist age 7... Now 51 ♡
Keep playing N flowing in your Purpose ♡
When music hits you, you feel Noooooooo pain. 💋❤
Ending credits WHO IS THAT? ❤❤❤❤👐
Southern killed it!! #Swca
I liked South Carolina State.
That tuba Solo
My top picks:
1. BCU
2. FAMU
3. ASU
*NSU- "That's a no for me dawg" in my Randy Jackson voice.
SU all the way but the end credit song is from the drumline music pack for bands there version of Neck
I loved the version at the ending credits as well, and didn't see a response to the questions as to who it was. I looked closely at the credits again....its the audio of Drumline Live's version of Neck...
Behold The Green and Gold!!!! The Marching Spartan Legion version is the best!!!!!!!
It waS straight trash don’t nobody ever check got north folk 🤣
The best version by far is when the credits are rolling. That shit is rocking!
Southern University all day 💯😎
At 7:49 it's the face expression that gets me 😂😂😂
1.JSU
2.BCU
3.SU
4.TXSU
5.Famu
6.SCSU
7.NSU
8.ASU
JSU hands down!
This compilation is and will be incomplete until The World Famed (Grambling State University) is in it! #GSUBESTNECK
SU the best and for those who don't know the band at the end credits is from the video game BCFX
That's Grambling playin a different arrangement on the end credits. A UAPB version at that. Not Grambling's original version
gsu BTW that game is based on GRAMBLING and doug Williams gsu has over three neck arrangements
I went to Txsu, so of course I'm going to say our version is the best, but how u not gone post up UAPB version????
FAMU Southern BCU & JSU
I like Bethune and Famu versions best. The one during credits tops them all.
Good video...Why is GSU (Grambling State University) not in this?... I saw many other SWAC bands!
The best one I've hears was UAPB
texas southern has the original neck played in 1984
casey green, No way Green, Grambling is the original, Grambling World Famed Band was the first, it was the tube section that started it. As the tubes played Neck bass line other brass sections got in on the party. One weekend later World Famed played Neck over and over during the game against Texas Southern. Neck was nothing but drums and brass.
@@dawolf373 you know your history!
Da Wolf I’m a Texas Southern fan and even I know the World Famed Grambling are the originals
Boy yawl want to be above TSU so bad when it comes to this, damn at least give them that. TSU is the original band that started playing Neck! Show me a video of GSU playing neck in the 80’s untill than TSU is the original Neck slayers PERIOD
Southern University 💙
Of course the Human Jukebox plays Neck the best no comparison at! Southern U
Of course SU had that in the bag with their skilled arrangement and powerful sound.
It's between SCSU OR BCU
Bethune Cookman has the best version of neck no other HBCU band can compare to the marching wildcats
Andrew Crawford the band that was playing in the credits was a real band. it was a mass band that played a lot of the music in the BCFX: Douglas Williams edition video game
Central State Version is dope too!! The not featured, but they sounded great at the Chicago football classic last year!
My family went to south Carolina State And graduated from there. Come on man marching 101
Can we get an updated version? Like something from the 2000s?! Ijs
You should have had The Tennessee State University Aristocrat of Bands playing the Neck!
+agewise4ever The aristocrats play it best. I like how they don't speed the tempo up but keep it at the funk.
1. SU (best arrangement and sound)
2. JSU
3. Bethune (sounded great and the quint break was 🔥)
SU trumpets bomb asf....omfg way to go SU
Jackson State Hands DOWN.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tennessee State has the best Neck Arrangement
