Hells Angels were a WW2 US Army Air Corp fighter squadron. That was the origins of the MC club on the West Coast (California) of the hundreds coming out of the war, veterans with lots of cash in hand and reasonably priced Harley's and Indians and a lot of hell to work off.

In the late 60's at the Blue Law concert hall in South Torrance CA I went to a concert featuring the band Steppenwolf. The attendees were about 1/2 surfer-hippies and the rest were various Southern Cal biker clubs such as Helll's Angels, Mongols, etc. There was a giant punch bowl filled with some kind of fruity punch and it was heavily dosed with LSD. Mucho folks were dipping paper cups into the punch and guzzling the stuff. At one point a big, grizzly bear sized Hell's Angel was coming at me. I thought I was going to get a big-time gnarly beat down. However, instead the biker dude hugged me and said: "I love you man." And he danced off into the crowd hugging everyone in his path. There wasn't one fight the whole night that I was aware of. It was like a surfer-hippie and biker love-in with Born to be Wild the theme song.

Hunter Thompson created a style of writing that he named "Gonzo Journalism." The idea was that he would dive headfirst into an idea or subculture and fully experience everything it had to offer, and then his writing would reflect what it FELT like to have that EXPERIENCE firsthand, moreso than the alleged "objective truth" other writers were offering at the time. Other writers could give you a rundown of "this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened" but he wanted to change things to focus on the experience rather than simple observation. To make you understand what it felt like to really LIVE through it.

The Wally Cleaver gen who Fought in ww2 were not running grass from Mexico. From what I heard or read the ww2 vets were riding in packs to simulate when they were flying in formations, that is also why they love the Harley, that loud motor.

Joe needs to re-read HST's superb "Hells Angels" book. 1) The veterans attracted to Hells Angels were from WW2, NOT Vietnam. Vietnam was just heating up as he was reporting the book. 2) As far who became an Angel, he focused far more on their roots in a certain type of violent, insular Appalachian subculture, which he knew well from his Kentucky upbringing. He talks of feeling transported back to Appalachia while hanging around the Angels, from the way they carried themselves -- he described them has having rawboned bodies that always looked like they needed to be leaning against something -- to their brooding distrust of outsiders, clannishness and quick resort to violence. In one lengthy passage, he labels Angels as "Linkhorns" after the family of lowlife drifters chronicled in Nelson Algren's novel "A Walk on the Wild Side."

Demobilisation after a major war has always in the past caused a decade or two of criminal activity when a large number of men who know violence, PTSD and military structure are suddenly released to civilian population.
The mob-activity 100y ago was only partly because of prohibition. WW1 gave the mobsters work-experience.

@4:03 I’ve never heard that before. It’s got me thinking of all sorts of reasons kids turn out the way they do because of parents or lack there of. I had to make sure the house was cleaned daily and be the babysitter. I still remember being grounded to my room and even though no one was home, I would be scared to leave it just to get a drink of water. I had to ask permission to leave my yard and go talk to my friend in his yard across the street(“why can’t he just come over here?”). The first chance I got to leave that place I took it. At 15 I went to work at my aunts farm over the summer. I jumped at the chance! I worked my butt off and was even asked if I wanted to stay and go to school there. My aunt even spent the time finding a number to reach my dad and let me talk to him, it had been years and I was told I couldn’t see or talk to him or my family there until he paid child support(when I found out he was and had been I lost it!!, years later once I turned 18). She told my mom that she let me talk to him…for 15 minutes… and my mom lost it. I was not only not allowed to stay and go to school there, my step father showed up the next day… from Okla. to Wisc. He stayed a day and then we left. Up to that point, that summer was the happiest time of my life, definitely the happiest of my childhood. I finally got to see my dad at 17 and that became the happiest… I was 3-4 the last time I had seen him before then.

Few things I want to touch on here: 1) As someone else already pointed out, the Hells Angels were started by WWII vets, not Vietnam vets. 2) The Angels are an international organization with thousands of members involved in many different business ventures, both legal and illegal, as well dues to be paid. Of course there is going to have to be someone to handle the finances. The position is called treasurer. The notion that all bikers are low IQ criminals is a false stereotype. 3) A group of gorillas is called either a band or a troop. 4) The guest uses the term "silverback gorillas" as if it is a species of gorilla, but its actually a term used to refer to adult male gorillas, regardless of subspecies. 5) There wouldn't be a troop of multiple silverbacks. Gorilla troops consist of one adult male, several females and their offspring. Male gorillas are forced out of the troop by the silverback once they reach sexual maturity. 6) There are other animals that show their teeth as a sign of submission, such as chimpanzees and hyenas.

The Hunter S. Thompson book "Hell's Angels" is beyond adjectives for me. The man didn't just embed himself into their organization in the sixties, but became friend's with them. Hunter even got close to Sonny Barger, whose name become synonymous with the Hell's Angels. Hunter's relationship with the club (and Sonny) ended less than acrimoniously, which HsT describes in his novel. The Hell's Angels were not happy with the reporting he did, and there is an excellent interview by the CBC, with Hunter S. Thompson and Sonny Barger, on YT. If even curious about the writing of HsT I'd say "Hell's Angels" is a helluva way to start. Hunter S. Thompson literally changed my life, and some of his work in the monumental collection "The Proud Highway", convinced me to walk out of a job I was miserable in. Gonzo until the end, he was one of a kind.

When I was about 15, a group of them pulled up and took over the patio at the restaurant I was working at. Management told everyone to stay away except for the severs taking care of them. Instantly I zipped outside to see them and their vests. Sure enough there they were. I stared from the door in awe until I made contact with one and gave a thumbs up. Manager freaking out and he called me over to say hi. I talked to them all about bikes, tours they’ve done, just kept it light. Not one manager dared call me back into work until I was done talking. Lol. They were great guys.

I used to be around a ton of hells angels when I was young. My dad worked with a bunch of them. My dad told me they offered for him to join in but he didn't want to but still rode with the guys... I'm not sure what all was really happening, I was just little but he may have just told me he didn't want to join I'm not sure. They all worked for Hawker Pacific in California and rode when not working. My mom used to make them food all the time but she wouldn't talk to me about them and what I said is all my dad would tell me later in life

The Hells Angels MC is a corporate brand now, they are more likely to sue you than beat or kill you.
No kidding, their third highest form of income (after branded goods and licencing rights) is litigation for copyright infringement and libel.

He confronted that individual in a bbc interview because he didn't accept the answer of 'you never bought us a keg' to the question of 'why are you indulging these broadcasters with this?'
I don't think you have read the book. It didn't seem like he wanted to appear as patched........... or even an associate.
Not that he drew a hard line against them. Yes he lived with them. Hunter was far too strange to be a part of a group.
But this individual who did not speak for the hell's angels as that doesn't actually work like that, had an issue specifically with hunter for saying something as he was beating 'his' woman.
      That was his beef.
Maybe that and the lack of residuals sorry. Maybe that's actually the whole point and the analogy of the 'keg'.
But then maybe Sonny himself squashed it as he actuallt read the book and it would be like giving the cops, squares, hippies and the media all residiuals.... in a novel that is a journo's account told through narrative hyperbole.
      I recommend the book :)
