Your title is very Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ! What's afoot ! I wish someone could do something about my right foot !! Ah old age comes so early ! I have a beautiful Louis XVI chest of drawers that has lost a foot at each move so now it's upside down in my 'to do ' pile ! One night in Paris I found the base of a piece of furniture that had two beautiful lions claw feet and despite having two Jack Russells in tow I managed to get it home, luckilly it was 1 am so the streets were empty ! I must look it out, it's way back in THAT pile ! The problems with having space is that you keep stuff . Lovely video again Tom xo

“So that’s how its done.” I say to myself. Over and over again. Year after year. I have inherited several very beautiful antiques owned by my great, great grandmother. When they are passed down to my descendants I want them to be perfect again. Time, moves, and my great grandmother’s potbellied pig have left me with some fun challenges. A Tom Johnson library is such a blessing. Superior knowledge flows from Maine to Utah and the rest of the world.

Tom deserves more thumbs up and subscribers. His videos show the younger generation how its done and done right! He is excellent at replying to his comments and is a very genuine person who obviously knows his business.
I live in Indiana and have thought for over a year now that I should send him one of the few things I have that were my dads, a wooden bowl he made in Boy Scouts. This year has been rough and it doesn't look better in the near future but once I get time and energy, I will be asking him for help. The round box is missing a piece and the lid and it has come unglued. I know what it looks like and can draw it for him. I look forward to seeing a video about it if Tom did one.
My dad was a photographer and when he got out of the Navy he had a business near Detroit. Dad took pictures that the Navy released to us when he died. I never knew my father as I was only 13 months old when he passed suddenly. I think if Tom did a video and fixed the box, I would use the only camera left from his studio, a Rollifex from Germany, to take a picture of the before and after.

Every time I watch one of your videos Tom, I always think of the poem "The touch of the master's hand". A joy to watch as always. I was just saying to the kids I don't know what I'll do when you retire and the uploads stop. I'll have to rewatch everything again. Ah, Ella. My heart still pangs when I see her. She seemed to be a bit younger in the clip with the bed. No grey snout on her there. They leave their pawprints forever on our hearts. Thank you so much Tom for another wonderful video with so much to learn from there.

Though I am primarily a new furniture designer and builder I pick up several points from your work on how to make mine last longer over the years.
This time I was impressed by your simple depth gauge of a nail and cork. I told my wife that I had to drink several bottles of wine to acquire the perfect cork and you were my inspiration. If she calls you, back me up! LOL

The chest of drawers from 1780, what amazes me beyond anything is that when you use your heat gun, you are softening glue that is over 240 years old, I think of the person who applied that glue all of those years ago and did they ever think that their piece of furniture was going to survive so long and then fall in to the hands of such a remarkable restorer? My upmost respect Tom x

This bed seems to be in the Empire style fashionable under Napoleon I after his companions in Egypt and Italy from 1803 to 1821. But this style also continued after his abdication. The legs of the bed are low and adorned with bronze, like the one you are repairing. This style or should I say these booms are the creation of the architects Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine. That said, this style remained popular until the beginning of the 20th century. You have done an excellent restoration and you are right to believe that this bed is rather "new". Congratulations on your work!

I recently had a project to repair the molding of a buffet for friends that was similar to the first one. My friends were pleased with what I did. I credit my success in a large part to paying attention to what you do. I still need to work on the toning part of the process though. Many thanks for creating these videos. Is a skosh the same thing that is referred to as a smidgeon in the Mid-Atlantic states or is a smidgeon the same thing that New Englanders refer to as a skosh? Or are they two different measurements? I am always amazed by your talent.
A skosh is preceisely 16/17ths of a smidgeon.
Jokes aside, 'skosh' is an interesting word, involving US troops stationed in Japan after WWII; it's more recent than one may think, only dating back to 1952. "Sukoshi" in Japanese means 'a little bit'.
And then there's a "touch or a tad". Of course, they are nearly the size of a "hair" and a bit more than a "cigarette paper"!

I have my grandparent's sleigh bed and I think I know how to fix the rails after watching your show. A proper bear claw wood rail set costs about $200 without molding. Maybe I can just buy the wood 6x 76, take the claws off the old rails, reinstall on the new wood, glue on molding, and stain the rails mahogany. I am a little concerned about the holes in the head and foot board being wallowed out due to age. I am thinking oak replacement rails as they are stronger. Thoughts?
Thanks! If those $200 rails work that's a good deal! making new rails is not easy but if you have some experience you can do it. You're plan would work. Getting those clips (bear claws?) positioned correctly can be a pain
60 rue Traversière in Paris still exists and it is now a 'Glue and Varnish' shop but I suppose that the wood working shop was at the back in a courtyard as was the custom. Number 58 has a little shop specialising in products and materials for people like you Tom ! You might want to go look if you go to Paris one day ! The shop opposite is an upholsterer.
