This is a great wood project book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.
Thanks Luiz! I'm not sure of what you mean. If you're applying an oil finsh on a new piece any oil finish will work, I like Watco. If you are referring to polishing an existing finished piece, I like Howard's Feed N Wax
Thank you for restoring this mirror for my husband. It came out beautiful and we are thrilled that you could repair the damage. I enjoyed being able to watch everything you did to bring it back to life. Thank you again you are a true craftsman.
You're welcome! I enjoyed meeting you both. I wish I had a mirror like this!
One thing I have grown to like, is your 'diagnostics', such as the washer conundrum at the beginning of the video. It certainly distinguishes your videos from others.
Thanks!
Enjoy the smaller restoration projects as much as the larger ones. Your narration is SO helpful. Thank you, Mr. Johnson. ✨👏👍❤
You're welcome!
Well I've been refinishing furniture for a long long time and always thought my work was good and it was a piece left my shop looking alot better than when it came in but after watching your videos and studying them hard I realized my work could be a lot better and because of you it is I have taken my work to the next level I have learned to pay attention to detail the small stuff I don't release something any more untill it is at the next level and the best it can be so I thank you for making these videos and I also will try to teach Others to learn the craftsman ship to keep antiques around for years and years to come
Same for me. What an educator.
Thank you Ed! I value the positive comments from other restorers. This really makes me happy!
Thank you!
The morning after Thanksgiving. Coffee in hand, watching a Thomas Johnson video. Life is good.
That's great! Thanks!
I enjoy seeing sweet Ella as much as your beautiful restorations.
Thank you! That's nice
Thank you for spending so much time and effort to show how and why you do everything. It's unbelievable how much I've learned from you. Beautiful work as always!
Thank you! That's great
Thank you Thomas. Happy Holidays
Mr Johnson your a great craft man.
@@johnsonrestorationI enjoyed this. Just discovered you today. If you have any videos on resilvering antique mirrors that would be helpful too!
I have an antique children's chair damaged by a flood I'm trying to restore. Can't remove the spindles and the multi ply seat is bad. Similar layers to what you had here I think. The top and bottom seems to be ok but the next layers buckled or rippled...how do I fix the rippled issue please? I'm in Nova Scotia...too far to drive...
That's a very nice Ella on stand, too. Great work, as always, Tom!
Thanks!
Chatoyance, a great new word for me! Looked it up, of course. It means changeable reflected bands of light caused by alignment of the fibers in the object. Usually referring to gems such as tiger eye or star sapphire. Thanks Tom!
You're welcome! I love that word!
Thanks, I was going to look that up but I forgot.
My dad gave me a demilune table with some missing veneer and water marks that I would love to restore and your tutorial has been unbelievably helpful and inspiring! Thank you for talking us through the thought processes as you go along! You're a master craftsman and it's so soothing and relaxing to follow your work!
Thank you! Good luck with that table!
I love that Emma is such a helpful supervisor.
Ella too! 😁
Thanks! Her name is Ella, but she knows who has the treats!
Yes, I assume he meant Ella. The most common name if people don't know her name is "Bella"
@@johnsonrestoration I knew she was Ella, I don't know how I got it wrong. She is a sweetheart no matter what.
Seems like a lot more than 8 hours. Maybe it’s the decades of experience. As always excellent and inspiring work. The stain repair was amazing.
Thanks! It's tough to give an actual time when I'm doing a video, there's guesswork
It’s always a great morning when I get watch one of your wonderful videos. Thank you.
You're welcome!
This is one of the furniture restoration channels that the work is professional and expert. Others put it out there that they have as much to offer as this gentleman does. They do not. I appreciate the distinction. He can title his episodes as he wishes.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
You have a very helpful and faithful helper. Dogs are wonderful and so is Ella Bela.
The restoration work and explanations: a small marvel as always.
Thanks.
You're welcome! Yes, Ella's my girl!
Beautiful restoration of a lovely object for generations to come. I was so happy to see a nice long video from Tom. Thanks so much for bringing us along on this journey...
You're welcome!
Great to watch, great result.
Thanks! 👍
The new finish is glowing with satisfaction. "I was redone by Thomas Johnson!"
Thanks! That's great
Beautifully done! I think your dog was pretty impressed too!
Thanks! She's easy to impress if you treats on hand!
If you didn’t know, you would be hard pressed to find it, another beautiful restoration!
I always enjoy your four pawed assistant, she’s adorable, oh yes, and your nature shots too!
Thank you!
I think that cone and washer combination was deliberate. I've had a lot of experience with old mirrors that used a washer on each side. There are only two ways they can be adjusted: so tight that something will break if you try to tilt the mirror, and so loose that no matter where you tilt it, it will go back to it's natural repose position.
But with a cone on one side, you have a controlled friction clamp arrangement, and you can get the happy medium where you can adjust the mirror and it will hold its position.
Thanks! Interesting! Yes, I left it the way it was because it worked so well. It didn't occur to me that it could have been deliberate, although clearly it had always been that way
Appreciate your comment @lwilton . I have some old easel clocks and they all had only one washer on one side which made me think one got lost over the years. I was going to make one out of brass so I'm very glad for your comment as it sheds light on the style of the day regarding these swivel items. Some of these antiques really require detective work to figure out. 😁
I was thinking the exact same thing
Good throwback clip to you rinsing a large previous project outside the garage for the safety of your good doggo.
Thanks! Yes, I liked that
That is one of the best looking finishes I think you have done yet. It turned out absolutely beautiful.
Wow, thank you!
I was just thinking about you yesterday and here is a wonderful new post! There really is no one like you for caring for old furniture.
And that stand is gorgeous - I can't imagine it being more gorgeous even when it was first made! And of course if we're going to overuse a word, gorgeous is appropriate forcElla is too!
Thanks! That's OK, gorgeous works for me!
That is absolutely gorgeous. The insets and rosette really came out of the background dirt.
Thank you!
That mirror was a reflection of perfection.
I like that! Thanks!
You have the most inquisitive dog. He just stays by your side and makes sure you're doing everything right. lol
I love him !!
Thanks! (the secret: I have treats in my pocket!)
I can't top any of the comments here, beautiful work as usual ! Always a pleasure to watch your work, Tom. Happy holidays to you and your family ! Looking forward to more of your videos in the new year.
Thanks! And the same to you and yours!
What a wonderful way to start my day! A nice, long, enjoyable video from Tom Johnson. Thank you Tom!
You're so welcome!
This content is incredible. It mystifies and de-mystifies the restoration process all at once. An hour felt like a minute.
Thank you! That's great!
Another piece of history saved. Great job, Tom.
Thanks!
Beautiful Tom! You are a true artist!
Thank you!
Spectacular job! That is the finest restoration I have seen you do. You can’t improve on perfection Tom. Man, you are excellent.
Thank you very much!
I started my favorite hobby (woodworking) by working for a furniture restoration company. You are truly an inspiration to me. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge. I am grateful for men like you who show not only the skills of the trade but, more importantly it's worth. God bless you!
Wow, thank you!
I loved hearing the summary that it took about 8 hrs and you summarized and showed the tools gathered up. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Such a "small' object, such a huge job. Highest standards, as one would expect from The Master. Looks pretty good. Take care.
Thanks!
Fantastic work! Loved seeing all the detail you put into this project
Thank you!
My husband and I enjoy restoring furniture. Most we happen onto in the street side trash pickups. Amazing what others throw away. Some furniture becomes like you have spare parts and hardware. But every once in a while you find a diamond in the rough. I give away most of my finds. Your work is well beyond my level of restores. But you inspire me to take the next step toward perfection. Thank you sharing your talents.
You're welcome! I love saving things from going to the dump too!
I love that there's still a very small hint of the stain still on the mirror stand. It's part of its story, its history; so it should still have a small presence.
Have you started signing and dating the pieces you refinish? You're part of their history as well. Many pieces would end up in a scrap heap, if it weren't for your special talents, that bring them back to life. They deserve your mark, and those in the future deserve to know you saved them.
Thanks! Yes, I should attach a card to the bottom. I don't know why I haven't been doing that
Your care and attention to detail is amazing and it really shows up on the finished piece. The way you explain every step and tool or substance used and why it's used is very educational. I have a small table to refinish and watching your video's will help me greatly.
Thanks! Good luck with the table!
Another fantastic job Tom, it’s a really lovely mirror
Many thanks!
Gorgeous work! I was so hoping that you would put on your hat at the end and you did!
Thank you! 😊 That's great!
Your attention to detail on each piece is so much fun to watch and the results are so satisfying! It’s true artistry 😊
Thank you!
Brilliant job as always. Chapeau!
Yes! Thanks!
Once again - your work is so inspiring. Thank you 🙂
You are so welcome!
Another meticulously crafted piece. The removal of the unremovable stain is just one more example of whatever that combination of experience and patience you have is called. Thanks.
Your welcome!
I've had a few of these mirrors in my lifetime, one in my bedroom now with two small drawers. I had a lovely mahogany one I gave to my daughter and she PAINTED it white, now it's looks very Ikea ! She hates 'old stuff' and of course my house is full of it including myself of course ! Great job Tom xo
As long as she doesn't paint you... 😁
@@dlevi67 All cracked and faded as I am then maybe a good coat of paint might help ! hihihi
@@TheFiown Nah. Patina is beautiful, even on humans. 😁😉
Thanks Stephanie! I can't believe she painted it. She'll come around!
Stunning work, truly magnificent. You are so skilled and your experience shines through. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Amazing video as always. The quality of the work, the way the videos flow, the editing and the filming is informative and relaxing at the same time. You do the filming all by yourself while working on the pieces?
Thank you! I do all the video work, and I have an editor
Thomas' talent is a treasure.
Thank you!
I always smile at the number and variety of clamps you make use of. The right tool makes the job easier. 😊
Thank you for taking the time to explain the use of oxalic acid, particularly the disposal of it.
Thanks! It's nice to have a lot of clamps
Really nice work. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome!
Brawo Mistrzu Tomaszu!
Dziękuje za filmik.
Zdrowia życzę.
Dziękuję Ci! I same najlepsze życzenia dla Ciebie!
You did a great job mate 👍 👏
Thank you!
Always looks “pretty good”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks!
Brilliant work as always Tom, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble, hope you are all well there, cheers
You're so welcome! Same to you!
Que alegría don Thomas, poder ver sus videos llenos de maestría y perfección ,es siempre un placer 👏👏👏👏👏🥰🥰👍👍
¡Gracias! ¡Soy consciente de que!
Every one of your finished repairs or restorations is a testimony to your professionalism.
Thank you!
This mirror turned out absolutely stunning. Your videos are thorough, educative and a pleasure to watch!
Thank you so much!
I think 'Pro' in the video title is a bit superfluous. All your restorations are somewhat above mere pro.
I love it…so dainty. Museum quality restorations…so cool!😮😊❤
PRO is clickbait. His work and video quality are more than enough to draw views, so I don't understand the usage.
Edit: The ads are more frequent also, which explains it.
Great outcome. Very enjoyable to watch the transformation. Thanks.
I thought Tom was trying to distinguish his restoration from the dozens of "weekend project" restorations.
Not that there's anything wrong with weekend warrior projects; but this is definitely more special.
He's just saying he's in favor of it. Other people might be anti antique mirror restoration, and it's important to know.
I love Tom's voice and expertise. The videos are a tad long sometimes, but more often than not I watch the whole thing. "I'm Tom Johnson...from Gorham, Maine." Good stuff.
Thanks! They are long, but that's what people kept asking for!
You really brought the lovely warm colour back to this classic mirror. Once again, lovely job! ❤
You're so welcome!
The final result is amazing! As always...
Thank you!
I'm so sorry to hear that Ella has passed Tom. I liked her appearing on the videos. I will miss her as you and your family will, take care Tom.
Thank you
As a neophyte furniture maker I really appreciate your tricks of the trade, and restoration of such beautiful pieces..
Thank you!
That mirror looks beautiful with inlay really stands out! I think you did a more than adequate job of making that mark on the base disappear!! Thank you so much for sharing your process with us.
You're welcome! I really liked this mirror!
Ella is a joy to watch how can i help boss probably what’s going through her head.
No, it's "where are the treats!"
Beautifully and meticulously done! Fine old piece---with all due respect! I love old furniture---especially pieces with inlay, it adds such dignity and character!
Thank you! Yes, me too. Some are so intricate!
This restoration was one of my favorites. It had a little bit of everything. The end result was simply beautiful.
Thank you!
Good job Mr. Thomas. Every time that I see the completion of his work I get emotional and learn a lot.
Thanks! That's very nice
I appreciate the list of tools used at the end of the video. It lets me know what to ask Santa for. 😀
Oh yeah! I hope Santa's watching!
It gets the Ella Seal of Approval. That’s more than good enough for me.
Yes! Always
A mark with a transverse hard edge like that it really difficult to disguise Tom. I think you should take a lot of satisfaction from that one. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome! It was very unnoticeable
Wow , who'd have ever thought how well that would clean up and become such a nice piece of wood again - wow
Thanks! Always a surprise!
What a difference! The finished mirror is a beautiful antique that anyone would be proud to have on their dressing table, but it could so easily have been overlooked and perhaps even discarded before you worked your magic.
Thanks! Yes, so true! I love saving things from oblivion!
Beautiful job Mr. J!
Thank you!
I love your commitment to doing the job right and working through the “speed bumps” in the process. Just Beautiful ✨
Thanks!
It is great to watch the master at work! I am sure the customer will be totally impressed!
Thanks Bill! Yes, they loved it!
🙋♀️❤🌲🐾I have a hot cup of tea, and a warm couch throw! Instead of old Christmas movies, I watch Thomas Johnson! A classic if there ever was one! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! ☃️🍪🌲
Thank you! That's nice
Incredible! A very organized workshop! You must have some fun! Thanks for explaining why you do certain things and why use certain products! That is how the rest of us learn!
Thank you!
Yay! Will save this to watch with my afternoon Manhattan in hand! Thanks for posting.
Yes! I really like that! Enjoy!
I watch all your shows but on my ruko TV I can't get enough of how u restore pkz post more new shows and I love seeing all the animals and birds
Thanks! I'm posting a new one in a couple of days
Such an amazing result! You are the best. I think it’s so important to show all the stuff needed to do refinishing. A client asked me to paint an old oak sideboard … thought it would take 4 hours! Old wax, gunk and decades of dirt that 4 hours didn’t begin to touch. So, yeah good to know the reality of refinishing!
Thanks! Yes, we all have been through it! Way too optimistic!
Thomas,
Thanks again for a great video. All the best for the holidays and next year!
You're welcome! And all the best to you as well!
It's almost hard to believe that the "before" and "after" shots depict the same mirror. You brought out the natural beauty of the wood more than the original finisher did. . . not to mention your skill in getting rid of the abuse that the piece had taken over the years. One other note: I was stunned when you said you had spent about 8 hours on this job; I would've thought the number was a good bit higher.
Thanks! Well, it was a straight forward job - no problems
Another supreme job Thomas I have no words or adjetives to express my admiration
Thank you!
Another great masterclass, we also use the foam brushes, not just for painting, once done with the foam part , the plastic strip below the foam is great for applying glue, and once that is done with, the wood can be used for doweling or other uses, a very versatile tool, Cannot wait for the next project.
Thanks for the tip - my fingers thank you for the suggestion to use the brush plastic strip instead of them as glue spreaders!
Thanks! Wow - great ideas! I like using everything down to a nub!
Yes, great idea
Great work as always Tom. Only 8 hours too.
Thanks!
You my friend are a magician! I think some of those dowels in your shop are magic wands! That’s a beautiful piece. Thank you for sharing
You're welcome! That made me laugh!
Top result after pursuing the final goal. What a transformation this is and happy Thanksgiving !!! Love it !!
Thank you! You too!
What a transformation! Maybe we should nickname it The Lazarus Mirror! Lol! Beautiful work!
Great idea!! Thanks
sublime as always Mr Johnson as we say in the UK a national treasure
Thank you! That's nice
I love how the inlay really pops. Beautiful work.
Thank you!
You are an artist. I turned out so beautiful.
Thank you!
I'm glad to see that your daughter has completed your training . Now that you are a professional your new videos are going to be amazing. Can't wait 😉👍
That's great! Thanks
I’ve worked on a few of those sunburst inlays and found a few from the 1870’s-1930’s were a bit heavier of inlay and scalloped with raised edges. With the darkening of wear it gives them almost a greater depth than the 1/64 or so actual scallop worn into the center of the petal or ‘ray burst’. It’s impressive what they did in some of those pieces as if the craftsman planned for wear and fading to accent his original work…or maybe that’s just me? That repair was some next level stuff, Thomas! Very impressive! The dark stains are so challenging that most guys I know just turn them down if the customer doesn’t agree to outright plane work on the surface. Thanks for showing that patience trumps fast and easy! I’ve never asked another man what he charges for his work and won’t compromise this time but my shop would have billed that out at close to $2200.00 (using only tools, chemicals and finishes available when the item was built…which is our trademark service)
Thanks Theophilus! I have about 10 hours in the job, although it's difficult to say because I have to account for the making of the video. I chrge $105 prer hour. And yes, the sun burst seemed to be proud on purpose, which I had not seen before. I'm glad I left it that way! I really like the Waterlox Original, as they claim they're still making it the same since 1910. The original finish on this could have been nitro-cellulose lacquer, but how can you know?
The finish transformation is amazing, taking it from interesting to beautiful. And I think we can agree to let the "glue event" of late '22 slide - this time.
Thanks! Yes, but never to be mentioned!
What matters is that it's Ella-approved. Superb restoration, Thomas.
Yes! Thanks!
I love your work Mr Johnson… and I love Ella, I’m so sorry for your loss
Thank you. We will miss her!
