Thanks for watching!! You guys rock!!
Great video! Quick pro tip, if you take the grill off and that cross member, its a lot easier and only takes an extra 5 minutes. It gives you so much more room for your hands. Same with anything on the back of the motor, take the wipers off and remove that entire cowl assembly, only takes 5 minutes and opens up so much room.
That's a great idea! Thanks for watching!
Love the ingenuity with relocating the airbag sensor bracket. Keep up the great work man.
I'm really happy with how that turned out. It looks OEM. They should have put it there in the first place! Thanks for watching.
Hi There Chrisfix, helpful video here, great job. One really important point regarding the SRS airbag trigger. That is attached to the frame rail of the car in that specific location for a very important reason. That is the crumple and shock zone for impact, which will deploy the airbags correctly when an appropriate impact necessitates their deployment. Moving it will absolutely jeopardize this functionality - resulting in a lack of deployment, as such you really need to amend your video to recognize this fact. You should not lead others into modifying their cars in a way that compromises anyone's safety. Kind regards.
Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!
I made it home with the battery light, busted out volt meter and found the alternator not charging, needed to leave to work and tapped the alternator lightly and it started charging. Has lasted 6 months. Great vid and info
Good tip on getting it going again! That works with starters too. Thanks for watching!
how did you do that.by putting tape
@@waawaa5316 sorry, I meant to put tapped. Fixed it in the comments. The alternator is magically still working
I'm putting my fourth alternator in my 2006 xB. I hit a deer at 154k miles and the right headlight is a big hole with a couple of aftermarket LED lights, one for low beam and one for brights (use six "fishey" 3 watt bulbs". I finally figured out that the alternator is seeing WAY TOO MUCH water and the bearings just can't take it. It's at 224k miles now and looks like I could avoid ever replacing the alternator again if I can protect it from water. I'm just going to use plastic sheets and zip cords to form a splashguard myself.
BTW, I had to lift the engine a bit to get the alternator out. At least now I have a nice shop and don't have to do it on my lawn. :)
I bought my 04 in 2016 and my alternator went out in 2019 2022 and 2024. I feel like something must be going on?
Love the Chris Fix reference 😂 between the two of you I think I could rebuild my whole xB
I hope so!! Thanks for watching!
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers Sorry for the late comment but just went on my first junkyard adventure and got a lot of xB goodies! Keep up the amazing content!
Replaced mine 2 years ago. Removed the front clip, PS headlight & jacked up the right side of the engine w/mount bolts loose. EZ-PZ. 1.5 hours.
Yeah, that's the correct way to do it, but I'm lazy and would rather scratch the hell out of my hands trying to stuff 15lbs of bologna into a 5lbs bag.
Funny bought my xb two weeks ago and drove it 24 hours straight from Kentucky to denver and once i started it again the belt was squealing so i took the belt off it needed to be replaced badly but i noticed the alternator was binding causing the belt to skip so that was the first job i had to do on my xb wasn't to bad the long bolt was nicer to me than yours was lol
Yeah, it's possible to remove that bolt, as I did, but it's a pain and reinstallation was a breeze with that air bag bracket relocated. Thanks for watching.
how in the world did you get that airbag sensor off?? I’ve had so much trouble using sockets and wrenches but have had no luck!!
It's not easy, but if I can do it, you can do it. Thanks for watching.
how is your DB Electrical alternator holding up? I am in the position of needing to replace mine now.
Just fine. The Big 3 helps a lot.
My '06 has 318990 miles. First alternator went in 2018 at 265K. It killed the original 12+ year old battery. Had just has my right shoulder rebuilt and in a bolster sling so I was down my primary arm and reaching across my bod to shift gears lol My poor little cube died on the highway w/o warning, on a Sunday, 95 miles from home. I had it hauled to the Olympia, WA, Toyota dealer (I don't recommend them) and opted for not going with the $400 alternator (plus installation) and went with the only other alternative they would consider which was $195 alternator and $200 for diagnostics and installation. For the record I hate car dealers and car dealerships! So this week the car flat out died w/o any prior warning, again. Drove home in the dark w/o headlights on. If I put on the lights the car died. The idiot lights on the dash were ablaze. Replaced the battery. That was good for 10 miles. Lights are back on. Next step, replace the alternator. I've got 2 good arms now but might need to find a second set of hands to help. Thanks for the vid.
Recap- we (3 sets of hands and a lot of cussing lol) did the alternator swap yesterday morning. Skinned knuckles all around but minimal bleeding. Take Air Mechs (below) tip and remove the grill and cross member. Terribly simple and indeed gave more room. I'd also suggest putting on the parking break, choking the rear tires and pull the right front tire for easier access to putting the belt back on. Also observe how the belt is "threaded" before removing it. You can't really take a pic w/your phone but try anyways. We didn't. I got online and could not come up w/a pulley/belt configuration that matched my little '06(?). WE got lucky and finally got it after... 45 minutes of trial and error. That danged air bag sensor bracket is definitely a bugger. We removed it and attempted to reinstall after the alternator was in and could only get one bolt on that sensor bracket. I can live w/that. We got the tension right/correct on the belt as now my little cube doesn't chirp and squeal when cold.
In some different vids by other dudes on this topic one guy loosened the motor mount and lifted the engine?!! That's not really necessary in my opinion. There is an AC hose quite fast in the way and we worked around it. On one dudes vid he talked belt flexion. This is the sideways twist/wiggle once installed which is a reflection of belt tightness and which reminds me of the "yaw" of pitch, roll and yaw of a planes flight path. Apparently there a tool to measure flexion that I was blissfully ignorant of and apparently isn't 100% necessary as we got it correct.
My buddy Sub-aroo Dan (he worked on my Sub when I had one) cautioned me to not surrender the core until you are sure you have the correct part. AND... don't do what I did and leave the new belt you paid for on the counter at NAPA. The old belt (almost 5 years old) went back on and I'll get a refund on the belt when I return the core for my deposit. It was in great shape and have good belt karma so far in life and haven't shed a belt on a rig in 30 years.
I'm def not impressed w/the alternator installed by the dealer 5 years ago. The little car sat out most of 2017 in the garage at home as I was on a detail to our Austin office and had a rental there, and 2020-2021, due to the pandemic and teleworking from home. I don;t think the alternator has 30K on it :(
AND... when we removed the old alternator we discovered the top bolt bracket inward to the engine was broken off at the housing for the alternator!!? One would assume the core is inspected prior to rebuilding and a visible crack would be seen and the part culled. Could the mechanic at Toyota have dropped the alternator and cracked it and it broke under tension.stress of operation? Gurr!
Sounds like my experience in 2019, I got 100 miles from where we were moving from and car quit, went to Walmart got new battery, made it another 45-55 miles, and down again she went, fortunately husband was behind me in the uhaul. Made it to next town and had it towed in, they said it'd be ready in the morning around 10, (motel right next to shop) it was 1:30 and $700 later we finally was back on road. Tough with 2 ferrets in cages! Now I'm having issues again, already did new battery last week, now I have to replace altenator again😢, then husband says he's not sure if it's even that ugh. Replaced belts a year ago. I thought first time it happened this time it was something to do with my clutch
@@rosannacrafton4670 So sorry to hear about your expensive break down. My little Black Cube is sill rollin', happily, at 323500. Everything is going well w/my little tin box, more or less... Recently had to replace all 4 coil wires($135 each) (no plug wires) then replace the plugs and valve cover gaskets (explained the oil leak?). I live in town these days and so no garage for my little commuter it lives on the street (curb). :( AND the transmission is starting to get way LOUD, again?! 5spd. Must be the way I drive it? Trying to get it overall to 344K. My mechanic said he'd get me to 400k lol At what cost??! lol So far a $2200 tranny replacement at 222000 was the extent of repair bills.
For reference my granny low 4 spd (love that tranny BW T-18) in the '89 F-150 4x4 has... 680K on the tranny and 270K on the clutch??!! I do not give up on a rig or engine!
@@kjmaurice8750 wow, little bit (my cracker box with the flap open, hehe) has around 231,000, she too has the clutch slipping occasionally. I'm going to see if I can have husband jump my car off to get enough spark to head the 37 miles to have my son change the altenator in the morning, if husband didn't have bad back I'd have him push me to pop it off, but being in a trailer park with extremely high speed bumps, not sure could get it going fast enough to pop off.
I’m in the +250k club for my xB, I had an original alternator but the problem that many seem to have... myself included is that the old belt stretches and gives you symptoms of a bad alternator. Great video BTW!
That's a good tip and it's possible that was part of my issue, but I was more than happy to replace it, especially after I put the work into removing it. Thanks for watching!
I had the same squealing issue and bought a new belt and did the extra bolt tightening trick. The squealing went away but I'm still getting intermittent battery light. So, I think it's probably both issues at the same time
What’s your take on having to change the water pump when installing a new alternator, I’ve heard that from other sources. it’s really needed? let me know.
The original oem alternator on my 2004 Scion just went bad at 300,300 miles. Not bad st all.
Meh, I mean, you can, but it's not necessary. I'm still on the OEM pump as far as I know. I think when I change out the coolant I'll change the water pump then.
Mine it still charge ?
But it started squealing but I been spraying lubricant to the bearings and pulley the squealing comes and goes.
A month later my old battery died
Yesterday it started crawling at times for a minute I got scared thinking it was the timing chain or lifters but removed the oil cap and there's no noise coming from inside the motor.
Then thought it was the water pump but I touched the alternator with a piece of metal and can feel the vibration of the alternator.
Can I please get your opinion
Should I go buy a new alternator or go get one from the junkyard?
Go with a new one.
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers thanks man.
This toaster been my extremely commuter car. I'm gonna take advantage of my labor/having room to work on it and replace everything brand new
Alternator, water pump and the thermostat
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers all this time it was the ac pulley.
So I'm gonna go to the junkyard.
Would I have to replace the whole ac or just the pulley?
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers
A new ac is expensive
So hopefully I find one at the junkyard if not worse case delete the ac like on the echo with a shorter belt less than $15
I replaced the alternator water pump and thermostat that were in good condition but now the toaster has new parts
Xb deserves it
More reliable now
My car doesn't turn over. No click, nothing. Just lights on the dashboard. Could it be the alternator?
Yep
Hey, I have a 05 Scion xB and it won’t start and every time I try to start it , it makes a click sound and my battery light also came up. Everything turns on except the car, any idea what it could be? I really need to fix it so I can get to work again.
OK Mr. Extreme Daily, hope U can take a little feedback. First it is a great video because its 20 times better than any video i have made. I liked how you used the simple voltmeter test, to prove the alternator isn't charging. BUT dont like when U relocate the SRS Airbag switch. They bolted it to a major frame piece. Youve bolted it to softer material. OK OK probably will work, but really you know the safety critics won't agree with relocating that. There was probly 20 engineers and 12 lab tests when they placed it. Now you're on soft metal, there is that little risk what if it don't work right. BUT THE REAL PROBLEM WITH your video? There is the little connector on the alternator, BELOW the power bolt. Look I'm just a driveway dude want to get this job done tired of being ripped off by both dealers and small shops alike, they are all criminals and i have the proof. So I want to just get this done on Saturday, AND you say "just fiddle with the small connector until it comes loose". WTF ???? FACT that GD connector is on there so hard, they might as well arc-welded it. You say "just fiddle with it". May i suggest hone your movie making skills to provide us with info we DO NEED. If I pull the alternator myself, I need to be as efficient as the guy at the Stealership, or it doesn't pencil out. When you say "just fiddle with it" you just cost me 90 minutes of my life. I am off to other videos to figure out what to do. ALSO i do NOT know what you are doing at junkyards digging for old pieces of splash guard. That just did not make a droplet of sense to me. But anyways, you at least got me started, did NOT get me finished, but thanks for trying.
I can tell you are new to the channel. This may have seemed like a "how to video", but it's more of a "what I'm working on in the garage this week" video. That's how the whole channel is set up. There are 100 videos on UA-cam on "how to change an alternator" I even reference Chris Fix's channel in the beginning of the video. If you want to see step-by-step how to do something, go watch his channel. Lots of people do. If you want to have fun watching someone who is NOT a mechanic work on his car and try to have a fun time doing it, watch my channel. As far as the airbag relocation goes, as I said in the video, I didn't plan on getting into an accident, so the relocation didn't matter. I no longer own the car, and I didn't crash it. Thanks for watching.
That bottom mounting belt was a bitch.
My wrench backed into that airbag bracket too. And vice versa for the two bracket bolts. They wedged the wrench into alt bolt.
I loosened the bracket, and was able to lean bracket forward a bit, to get the alt bolt out.
Love the bag sensor move. I should have done that.
Perhaps in the near future.
Not a fun project.
Yeah, it looks like it should easier than it is. Thanks for watching!

@@ExtremeDailyDrivers really not Tryon to be a ass, just between all the irrelevant information from the search, then having to watch 20 min of bs about everything other than the video description. Just tryin to get my ride off the side the road. Very very annoying
I hear ya. After you figure it out, make a video! That's what I do!
With the squealing issue, that’s due to the belt not being tight enough from what I’ve read on some forums. Theres a threaded hole that I believe is M10 which can accept a bolt to use as a prying surface vs accidentally breaking the VVTI solenoid. You basically pry against the bolt/alternator to tension the belt a little easier. Good to see you fixed it though! I had an alternator issue not too long ago myself, hence the info.
Yeah, mine would only squeak on initial startup if the AC was on. Once the car was warmed up, it never made a noise. Good tips, though!
Replaced my alternator and the light is still on what can be the problem? I have noticed that there are two types of amps for the scion xB 2005 (80, 90)and I got the 90 and placed it and the battery light hasn't changed. What can it be?
Did you test your alternator before you replaced it?
Did You go to a Harry’s U-Pull-it?? In NJ? We have Harry’s U-Pull-its in PA as well!
No, I'm in Florida, but from NJ. Thanks for watching.
Guys I installed a new oem belt and oem alternator 3 days ago. This morning it starts squealing crazy loud when it’s cold but then goes away. What could it be?
It's not tight enough. Thanks for watching.
What happens if it ends up not being the battery or altenator? Which will be my next thing to check? Husband thinks it may be a ECM?
Sounds like you need a good mechanic. That should be the next step. Good luck.
Yup!!...the dreaded alternator, excellent tutorial on replacing it...who knows maybe it's a loose belt.👍🏽🇺🇸🇯🇲🌴☀️🌴
It's possible, but I'm glad I replaced it. Alternators don't last forever!
No help... You didn't show any of the actual work loosening the bolts... ugh
You can't film it. There isn't any room for the camera. I do the best I can explaining it without having to pull the engine to film it for you. Thanks for watching.
He did show that the alternator can come out the top without thank god lol without having to remove the entire bumper and light assembly which I’ve seen other installation videos doing on UA-cam. I’m working on this now and stopped to check a video real quick before I went any further to make sure that I can pull the alternator out of the top because the other options are definitely not fun. Lol by looking at the alternator you can see the easy bolts to work on and he did highlight and show the one difficult bolt that can make doing this job a pain. I’m going to go ahead and pull off the airbag sensor bracket which should give me enough room so that the bolt isn’t such a pain in the ass. These Toyota alternators were the real deal! 160 thousand miles on my scion XB, four or five different high amperage drawing stereo, systems, and this stock alternator powered them all. Pretty impressive. Wasn’t even upset when I saw the battery light come on lol. 🔊🔊👍👍
I hear you on the cramped space! Engine work was a dream when cars were big and shoot was raging! Lol
If you haven't tried a GoPro, you might find that it helps get those right shots in some cases. After a bit of practice, you'll be able to decide when it can be useful. FYI

You know it!
Props to you giving ChrisFix a shoutout instead of putting on a front that you knew how to do everything right off the bat 👍🏼 i can appreciate that
Lol. There is NOTHING that I know how to do off the bat!! Trust me, you wouldn't believe the research that goes into these videos. I use every resource that I can find and Chris Fix is one of my go-tos. Thanks for watching!
Not a total surprise that the alternator checks good. First check is always the various grounds and how good they are....especially as the car ages. Next, for this topic....the Voltage regulator.....then the alternator, last. My 2005 xA has 292,000 miles on the original alternator....and I plugged-in the Autool 60 gauge on my dash, which tells me the real-time voltage of the alternator as the car runs...and also shows the reading a few seconds longer, when the car is turned off.... so in this way it shows the off-condition battery voltage. BTW..... 12.3 V is not a good charge on the battery.
Full charge is 12.65 -12.8V,
75% charge is about 12.4 - 12.5V
50% charge is about 12.2 -12.3V
25% charge is about 12.0 V...anything less is basically "Dead"
Not sure what the point of your comment is, but it was the alternator. Those BS tests at the auto parts store don't work. Thanks for watching.
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers ..I guess my point was to give added information. 12.3V is not a "Good" voltage as was stated...and having gauging to see the condition of a running car and a non running car, is a way ro assess where the problem is. Also....the Autool 60X gauge is a dash mounted gauge for about $30 that plugs into the car's OBD test plug....an easy and cheap way to get all this info....cheers. Might be useful to others here reading the comments.
@@TheWilferch I gotcha. Mostly everything I say is "wrong"😆. I always say, "Don't listen, just follow the pictures."
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers .... gotcha... 😊👍
Ditch that top alt bracket and get a heim joint off eBay to simplify belt tensioning. Also, try to stick with DENSO alternators for quality and durability. Or rebuild it yourself! Plenty of how-to videos on here
I considered the upgraded alt bracket, but ultimately decided it was unnecessary. When install correctly, you shouldn't have any issues with the stock piece. I haven't in almost 300k. As far as the alternator goes, yes Denso is the best, but also 3x more than I paid. Thanks for watching.
My alternator went out yesterday and after watching the video I feel a lot more confident that I can do this myself instead of spending more money getting someone else to.
If I can do it, you can do it.
My alternators when out when I first bought mine and replaced it on the side of the road with my dad that was fun
Oh God. That must have been a pain in the butt. Better you than me! Thanks for watching!
Great video I always use the oem belts , learn my lesson with the cheap belts.
Yeah, OEM or Gates are all I ever use. Thanks for watching.
Yes the squealing is from the belt not being tight enough. To take the long bolt out I had loosen the left side engine mount and jack the engine up a bit. Awesome vids love ‘Toaster Tuesday’s’! 👌🏼
I was able to get it out while prying the engine sightly with a pry bar. It will certainly be easier next time!
Extreme Daily Drivers yes actually only need about half inch to an inch of clearance. One thing I was hoping to see was a tip of using a bolt to use as leverage when tightening the alternator. It’s an extra whole on the alternator bracket. I had to do this whole procedure about a month ago. Broke the bolt that holds the alternator. Surprisingly easily replaced.
You didn’t really show how it was removed, but thanks for the other instructions
Chris Fix is a nice guy and good at his videos. But I prefer Scotty Kilmer for car repair advice. Scotty has fixed car for over 52 years and that is pure experience!!
I love them both. I tell people "I'm the Chris Fix of UA-cam!" Lol
Missed the amount of belt tension that needed to be set at as these belts can go to 90ft lbs and normal range is 45 to 60 ft lbs and the Toyota/Scion XB 1.5L spec is very hard to find!!!!!!
Good point! Thanks for watching!

Kinda risky to relocate an airbag sensor. It's located there so that a front end/ side impact and deploy the airbag.

Also, no fair, you completely missed the removal part. I’ve seen other videos where they remove a motor mount and lift the motor up (waaay more work) or removing the bumper. Seems like a lot of work if it fits from the top

Bottom bolt is the pain. Also the one you need to tighten when you use the pry bar against the alternator to tighten the belt to stop the squealing. Could never get it tightened until i got some nice thin gearwrench ratcheting wrenches. Still original alt, 2005
