Travelling FIRST CLASS on Kenya's SGR | is it worth it?

- Travelling from Nairobi to our favourite coastal town of Watamu can be expensive when flights can set you back over $300 USD
Although flying from Nairobi to Malindi is much quicker we decided to try the cheaper alternative, and take the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) from Nairobi to Mombasa, then a 2.5 hour shuttle from Mombasa to Watamu.
This 6 hour journey passes through the stunning Tsavo National Park and the chance to see wild elephant is high!
But was it worth it?..
How to book SGR:
Tickets can be booked directly with metickets.krc.co.ke/ or with a Big Time Ultimate Transfers (+254 726 779471)
Train Times:
The express train from Nairobi to Mombasa departs every day at 15:00 & 22:00
The inter-county train from Nairobi to Mombasa departs every day at 08:00
Train ticket prices:
First class - 4,500 KES per person
Second class - 1,500 KES per person

As of yesterday what you experienced is now business class. They are bringing in real first class coaches with one seat per window with recliner seats, reading lights e.t.c in a few weeks time. The new coaches will be exactly what you would experience in a first class section in a plane. So I guess you will need to do part two of this first class video.
Interesting! We'll keep an eye out, and start saving up for the inevitable high prices 🙈
hehehe.... I love your jokes
That happening amid the ongoing chaos
Two weeks gone, any updates?
@@profAKILI....tumepanga na tumetenga my frienn😅😅..wewe ngoja tu..
I absolutely adore this little family. Always looking forward to More adventures with you guys. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You're so kind ❤️
Thank you for the support 🙏
Welcome to Kenya🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Asante 🙂 ❤️
Adam(Hulk) carrying all the luggage 🧳😅
That's my job 💪
Few years back the Al shabab terrorist real caused havoc in Kenya especially at the coastal area & Nairobi, that is the reason security is very tight at the station.
I actually think it's great that security is tight. Makes you feel much safer
I'm glad to watch your video, it's my first time
Welcome!
Am always here to enjoy these beautiful people's vlog so lovely and adorable. Am Kenyan In Texas. I will definately go for SGR and then instead of the shuttle, I will order my own uber.
Thank you for the support 🙏 ❤️
Coz I like you guys, I didn't skip the ads.
🥳 Legend
Very nice experience! 💚
Thanks. We enjoyed it 😀
Please always speak up no matter what. Coz your life is in the driver's hands
It's true 🙏
Yep, we speak up even in matatus with all the other passengers on board. Some drivers are pretty reckless.
Safer to fly especially the roads after the rains must be atrocious, and duelling work on the MSA - MLD highway means the journey isnt pleasant.
My dad always drove us during school holidays on NRB - MSA route and I ended up doing a few trips myself, it can be dangerous if you're lulled into speeding but if you stick to 80-100kph and set off 4AM it's a thoroughly challenging and rewarding drive
Yes agreed if going to Watamu I'd definitely fly in future, however going between Nairobi and Mombasa I think the train is a very good option.
Thank you for coming to my counrty love ya all
Thanks for having us 🙏
i am from kenya and i wanted to welcome you to our conutry where next family🤩😘😍🥰
Asante 🙂
Big up..nice video and amazing experience you had, next time when you get time you can also try Tanzania electricity Sgr train with 160 km/hr also the double deckers train from Germany and EMU train from South korea..you're welcome!!
Toka hapa kweraa kabisa 😂
We'd love to try them 🙂
We might just have to start a GoFundMe to pay for all that travel 😂
@@WhereNextFamily when you go there just tell me..I'll contribute (you and your family) go and return ticket in Business class for Sgr train..doesn't matter where you gonna go..(just for love and appreciation for what you're doing)
second class also gets tables, the seats face each other like in a restaurant
How is the comfort?
Could you explain more about how you got the shuttle? Was it booked ahead or there specific shuttles that would go to Diani for example?
We used a company for our shuttle. It was called Big Time ultimate transfers. I'm sure they do other destinations as well. You can also just arrive and find one of these guys with signs and they will put you in the right van
Tanzania's SRG fast train came into operation last week.. it's a little more luxurious than the one in Kenya.
Oh I see you're trying to stir the pot here in the comments 😂
You're about have the 254 army coming at you 😉
But in all seriousness I didn't know about the Tanzanian one. Will have to try when we next cross the border 🙏
please, relax and quietly return to your corner
But it covers a smaller distance though...
You're right, but there are better trains everywhere. 😂😂😂
You’re right but does it pass in the middle of your National Park
Perfect editing. You can opt for self drive taxi pay for a day or 2.
Thanks 😊
Self drive/rental is an option if you're only going for a couple of days. We go for longer periods of time and like to work while we travel as well.
The highway is also notorious for accidents 🙈
@@WhereNextFamily OK.
Thankyou
You’re welcome 😊
Do you know whether it's possible to book the shuttle from the Mombasa station to south coast in advance? Thanks.
There are lots of guys with signs outside the terminus when you arrive. I'm sure you could just approach one and get a ride. We prefer to book in advance though
You must always speak up your mind and let them know you're not comfortable with how the person is driving.
It's true. But nobody else seems to think his driving was a problem 😂
@@WhereNextFamily Don't wait for someone else to notice as you will have prevented an accident occurring in the first place. Speak up and Don't be afraid.
🎉
🙌
Adam - Check's too thorough I don't know what they're looking for...
Adam - My daughter will never ever take the shuttle because of the driving
??? 😀😀😀
😂 didn't say "too thorough" I said "very thorough" and that it was a good thing 😉
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🙏❤️
I’m actually from the same country as them btw I wanna meet you guys irl
Are you in Kenya?
SGR is cheaper compared to trains in UK
Oh that's for sure. Trains in the UK are a joke! SGR was great 👍
I hate that train ride and will never do it again.
Oh really? What did you hate about it? We thought it was pretty good
Maybe going slow? I hated it too. I thought it was like the Japan bullet train😂😂😂
😂 yeah I think maybe we went in with low expectations which is why we enjoyed it.
If we expected a bullet train we'd be very disappointed as well 😉
do you like our food
We love Kenyan Chakula ❤️
Very bad seats on those trains, and quite expensive compared to buses
Personally I disagree on the comfort side. I found it very comfortable, and lots of space to love around that you don't get on a bus.
It's also much much safer than taking the bus. I know the train is not within everyone's budget, so of course in that instance then the bus is the obvious choice, but personally I would pick the train over the bus 10 times out of 10
Someone has to solve the Great Chapati Mystery. How does that magnificent flat dough keep appearing on your plates?
Check the internet and it seems the threat of terrorism is rearing it's ugly head again in Africa so hence the security checks. Be safe Where Next Family.
😂 its a secret. Really our suitcases are just full of chapatis. We don't own anything else, just cameras and chapatis 😂
@@WhereNextFamily Mystery solved!
Tanzania's is much better and faster.
Maybe one day we will check it out
You wish
Great review Adam I would feel the same about the shuttle bus 🫣 so just to confirm you prebook SGR online before going to the ticket counter in the terminal? I reckon the SGR is good if you’re headed to Diani but Watamu it’s probably better just to fly 😅
Thank you 😊 yeah sometimes you get a responsible driver but unfortunately a lot of the time these guys are on the clock and they do this route so often that they go into autopilot.
Yes, you book your tickets online, then collect at the station on the day (give yourself an hour before your train).
Tickets sell out so I wouldn't advise trying to buy on the day.
@@WhereNextFamilygreat thanks dude 😊
