Economy Class VS First Class On The Nairobi SGR

- All aboard the Nairobi SGR on our way to VOI for another epic safari! This is our second time on the train and after travelling SGR first class last time, we wanted to compare the experience with the economy class.
Economy Class - 700ksh
The economy class configuration is 2-2 on one side and 3-3 the other side, all face to face with a small table in the middle. The seats are a bit small, not that comfortable and it can get a little warm inside the wagon due to the larger number of people but for the price and convenience, it is totally fine.
First Class - 2130ksh
In first class onboard the SGR, the configuration is very similar to a plane. Everyone faces the same direction with two recliner seats on each sides of the isle. First class also gives you access to the restaurant car which is a big plus in my book. The food is affordable and descent so grab a bite and enjoy the ride. Choo Choo!

I have done Nairobi - Mombasa and back on the Economy class. Apart from the smaller seats and having to face strangers, everything else is good.
If I'm not driving to Coast, then SGR it is.
Especially for the price, it's really good.

Just like you, I rode first class and economy class when I went to Mombasa in 2017 just to see the difference. First class is obviously more comfy but not worth triple the price for economy class.
I think the difference in experience is worth it for us since I like do to some work on the train.
Have used this 2nd class from Voi to Nairobi and it's something have never done again and sure will never do.
We truly didn't find it that bad. For sure first class is better but still...

We kenyans don't mind the economy, as long as you get to save around Ksh 2000. That can take you a whole month, an indeed life saver 😊

2 things I dislike about the sgr, there's no assistance for short people to put luggage overhead. I'm short and I usually have to step on the seat to put away my bags. The second thing is the chaos of boarding and disembarking, the lack of order is exhausting. Aside from that, first class is awesome, economy is bearable if you have no other option.

The old trains had nice 1st and 2nd class sleeper cabins with turndown service. They should convert the new trains to the same old classic cabins.
Actually the SGR does have cabins with bed but they don't use them.

Even economy class they get u what u order last time i ordered rice with beef i got it so food is same whether u sit economy or first class

I'm an introvert so having to sit in a cramped seat facing scowling strangers like those two ladies is something I'd readily pay triple to avoid.Also, in my student days, I experienced a nightmare toilet, from Lyon to Bordeaux (I'll spare you the details), I've pretty much learnt tricks to avoid using transport facilities.
I do understand your point and this is why I think the first class is worth the price.
I will never use the second class again. There is no space to even place my legs.
But its also 700ksh!

I went to Mombasa in economy once, never again. It was soo uncomfortable sorry, it wasn't even about the seat it was the chaos.

We are in Ethiopia right now!! We also did Sudan, Tanzania, South Africa, Mauritius and Cameroun. We are slowly traveling around.
Too slow in this day and age the journey should be no more than 1.5 hours after factoring in the distances from the CBD betweeen nai and msa terminuses.
Its another white elephant in my opinion, morroco have french bullet trains that are much faster ....
I took the bus last week betweeen Nai - Msa and the roads were as good as my memory serves and no need to pay for an uber from the terminus to cbd either way.
You are not wrong. For the year it was built, the technology is pretty old sadly...

It makes very little difference and not worth the price for 1st class, the only difficulty is if say 4 of you want to travel together the seating numbers are weird or don't follow a logical step, eg: a 4 seat with table is not 1,2,3,4 it's more like seats 1,2,6,7 and the fact I can't take my vape is infuriating, I can take it on a plane as hand luggage but not on a train, I did take it once but it cost me 1000ksh bribe

Sgr economy is the worst experience ever! Security treatment is rude and autocratic! Seats are uncomfortable! Night train is noisy! Poor customer service! Voice over announcements not legible.Dont use the economy if you can afford first class.Night travel no place to lean when sleeping.worst experience ever!you will get a stiff neck

Hey🫶🏻we couldn’t find first class tickets and your video has completely made us change our minds. Are the seats allocated or is it a first come first serve? Our tour guide mentioned we could end up standing the whole way.
