Santianna", also known as "Santiana", "Santy Anna", "Santayana", "Santiano", "Santy Anno" and other variations, is a sea shanty referring to the Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
This shanty from the 1850s was likely inspired by contemporary events related to conflicts between the armies of Mexico, commanded by Antonio López de Santa Anna, and the U.S., commanded by Zachary Taylor, in the Mexican-American War.
The lyrics though catchy are not true to reality as the Mexican army lost the battle of Molino del Ray, among others. The story goes that the lyrics were inspired by British sailors that defected to join Santa Anna's forces.
The common French rendition, known as Santiano, was first recorded in 1961 by Hugues Aufray. A mixed English and French rendition was also recorded by The Longest Johns.
Lyrics (As per The Longest Johns cover):
Oh Santiana gained the day
Away Santianna
Now pull the yan up the west they say
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
She's a fast clipper ship and a bully good crew
Away Santiana
And an old salty Yank for a captain too
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
Santiana fought for gold
Away Santiana
Around Cape Horn through the ice and snow
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
'Twas on the field of Molly-Del-Rey
Away Santiana
Well both his legs got blown away
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
It was a fierce and bitter strife
Away Santiana
The general Taylor took his life
Along the plains of Mexico
Well heave her up and away we'll go
Away Santiana
Heave her up and away we'll go
Along the plains of Mexico
Santiana now we mourn
Away Santiana
We left him buried off Cape Horn
Along the plains of Mexico
Santiana is one of those songs that just has a sort of elegance to it.
The song makes me feel like Santiana was a pirate but he wasnt. Head canons huh?
In every sense of the word, visual, audial, sensorial, emotional… this is simply beautiful. Beyond words beautiful, like you. You and your music have such a special place in my heart💚💚💚 Thank you for posting so much and for this. Every piece you construct is a treasure… a treasure I am glad to have found. It’s a gift to be on this journey with you💚💚💚 you are a delight and a saving grace. I need you to come gig in Michigan!
I'd love to hear a cover with a different ending. A happy ending. No blown off limbs or suicide.
Your clones are very impressive. You must be very proud.
Your voice creates instruments where there are none, and conjurs whole environments. It's a silly comparison, but I'm reminded of Tolkien- how Dwarf music almost magically moves Bilbo.
Great song, along with General Taylor
I've heard a lot of covers of this song, but yours feels the most raw and heartfelt! I really enjoy listening to all of your songs, thank you for sharing.
You've got to Collab with The Longest John's or Corb Lund.
A bit of a pet peeve of mine, but isn’t the second half of the first verse supposed to be “Napoleon of the West, they say”? Seems to make the most sense to me that way.
Excellent cover. The harmonies are wonderful.
Not a cover I was expecting but a cover I very much appreciate! Absolutely beautiful. I can only imagine the justice you and your voice would do to "Sniper's Promise".
That's it, I'm listening to this version from now on.. you win!
Playback speed 1.25 👌Awesome cover Mr. Watkins
This song is about General Santa Anna and a fictional victory in Monterey or ‘Molly’ del Ray…
I can listen to this on repeat.
This is the first and my most favorite sea shanty ever. Your cover of it is awesome.
"on the plains of Mexico" ... my brain has a different version of this line... on the plains of Ghana... idk why. but this one rhymes properly... and has been I my head the first time I heard the song.
Seth's covers are my favorite versions of every song he covers. He just can't be beat!
Ah, nothing like a good sea shanty! Once again, bravo!
