Does anyone keep coming back to this song after all these years? I can months and years without hearing it and then I’ll be making a coffee or whatever and it just pops in my head.
"Santianna", also known as "Santiana", "Santy Anna", "Santayana", "Santiano", "Santy Anno" and other variations, is a sea shanty relating to the Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Supposedly, the last whaler to return to New Bedford hauled in to this tune. - Wikipedia P.S. : French version of this song is "Santiano" by Hugh Aufrey. Norvegian version is "Santi Anna" Fair Winds and following Seas :)
It's: The Skipper (as in the helmsman) likes whiskey, the Maid likes rum, the Crow( the guy up top in the crows nest) likes both but we cant get none...Just saying....great shanty enjoy maties!
+theodosis kantas skipper just means Captain - who would often be at the helm, admittedly, but probably not the hemsman himself, they would just get one of the more experienced sailors to man the wheel.
I am not generally an anime fan either, but I think these are brilliant. Choosing familiar characters to illustrate life in the Age of Sail, the American Civil War, World War II and other great periods of history is a very clever idea and I think it makes it come to life for people who might otherwise not give a damn. His costume is always reasonably accurate and his depictions are realistic in the subject matter. It impresses the hell out of me.
Refrain of the french version (I guess it's the original shanty? Correct me, if I'm wrong!^^) Tiens bon la vague et tiens bon le vent, Hisse et ho, Santiano! Si Dieu veut toujours droit devant, Nous irons jusqu'à San Francisco.
I came back after years, I still love these, it's unique, well practiced, and as an adult I love the songs. If the Creator ever hates on their art don't, I feel this is a classic and fond memory. And truly the lines are clean, shading is good even if your pencils may not of been very good you had worked hard. I hope you are blessed.
Well done! Bravo! I used to sing this shanty to my children when they were babies, putting them to bed. I miss those times as much as this lost America! Thank you!
Indeed, this is a fine selection of images along with the best version of Santy Anno I have yet heard. Your artwork is brilliant - keep up the fantastic work. ^_^
Heard this for the first time tonight at Sea Shantie night at the Griswold Inn in Essex, CT. Fantastic tune. Our boys sing it with a might, "sail awaaaaaaaaaay!!!! Santiaaaanoooooo!!" Cheers!
If you listen to enough versions, "Santy Anna", "Stormalong," "General Taylor", "Cape Cod Girls", and "South Australia" all blend together! They are combined and recombined so much, that it becomes impossible (pointless) to distinguish! :) -- one big schmear :)

Nassau girls ain't got no comb is what I heard on first. Yaller= Yellow when I was young and in my prime Away santy ano I'd knock those Scouse girls two at a time Along the plains of Mexico As the beach boys would sing abt different girls in "I wish they all could be california girls" or the Beatles sing of different girls in "Back in the U.S.S.R" so this shanty also has the singer singing about different girls around the world. As I see it. Or rather, the beach boys and the beatles took it from them, whatever.
Listening to this on my boat anchored on the river weaver in the middle of a storm and just makes me wanna sail the coasts of Mexico and the Carribbean again, good times.
I’ve been listening to this on a sea shanties playlist and only now after listening to is for the past week do I finally look at the videos playing and I just see fucken naruto I mean I just can’t 😂
I just love this kind of jolly music, makes my jolly belly go jolly. Anonye who can tip me with music similar to this? I really need a playlist of music like this, then i can die in peace
I must admit, I wouldn't have thought of combining anime and sea chanteys, but I really like what you've done. I am a young guy that laments how my generation rarely appreciates such music, but you are doing a great job... Perhaps you have heard of Stan Rogers and his song "Barret's Privateers?" I bet you could have some fun with that one, though I won't try to tell you what to do with your art. Thanks again.

Yes. And it has to be this version with the fucking anime pictures it's just so good for some reason
@@ladderstothemoon7415 I think it captures the youthful tribulations of sailors
Same here! Once you hear it, you'll never forget it.
Feel that.... Yes, all these later. Here I am. Glad I'm not alone in this.

Like the same General Santa Anna from the Mexican-American war?
@@verybigAL437 Very likely, because this is a british song (I believe) no one would care about Santy anna's reputation to the Americans

That's the cool thing about folk songs- they change over time and across distance.

The group is called the Northwestern Musicians. Their album is titled Victory Sings at Sea. I hope this works for you.

Every few years I come back to listen to this song and watch this video. Nice to see you're still posting.
I love the music. Love the artwork. And love them together. These videos have seen me through hard times.
This is like listening to Chopin while watching Britney Spears
Was listening, looked up,
...and saw anime
This is why you look at the thumb before you click. I've watched most of these, but to be honest, I came for the music, the art is secondary...
I like Chopin's music, I like Britney Spears' looks.
LOL I think...
Me too
When I was sailing with Götheborg, we sang a cover of this when we arrived in Helsinki in front of a massive crowd. It was Epic!
