David Gilmour has a real felling for the guitar. The head and the heart so often don't get along. That's not say either lacked the other, but one was in charge over the other. The marriage between the sun and moon.
This is what i think about all of these. One of Dark Side's biggest virtues is it's nuance, the complexity of the concept is one of the main reasons it's one of the greatest albums ever. All this does is reduce that nuance and dumb the whole thing down to capitalise on the lowest common denominator of people, taking advantage of all the people who are only just getting into it... that's so cynically ironic, it has to be on purpose.

You can't extrapolate that simple sentence to "this is what it would have sounded like if Roger was solo in 73". The guy who actually said said that was a different guy and he only said that in response to you and indeed he has a point. This song is evidence of what Roger sounds solo. It's not proof of anything but it is a sample. We can't say it would sound like this in 73 (definitely wouldn't, it's 40 years ago), but that was never the point. The point is it would sound worse. Also, people are allowed to use hyperboles like "Roger Waters is NOTHING solo", when clearly everyone knows he's one of the greatest. We are allowed to mock even the works of geniuses. Simultaneously demonstrating why the original version of Money and Leonard Cohen's vibe were so iconic by showing what it would have been like if they had both been done very badly. Genius!
I think you are all onto something here - this sounds...derivative (and overwrought). The original was exactly that - original. And evidently it depended on that exact mix of talent to pull it off. A lot of musicians have remarked that PF's music isn't all that technically complex, but that each and every stroke is precisely where it needs to be, perfectly composed and performed. I would have to agree. To my way of thinking, this is kind of like that awful remake of Casablanca a few years back. I mean, why would anyone even attempt such an undertaking?

Because of his huge, and therefore sick ego, Roger made a new version of DSOTM simply to tell us, "Hey guys, let me tell you again: Pink Floyd was just ME." To me, this just goes to show that...thank goodness David, Nick and Rick were there too! Greetings from Argentina.
As the musical extension of Roger's verbal belittling of his former bandmates' contribution to Dark Side of the Moon, I think this backfires spectacularly. Like a swan dive into an empty swimming pool.
Totally agree, not true and rather embarrassing, and as for this version, he just borrowed Tom Waits style and made it as about as interesting as watching paint dry.

The reason "Dark Side of the Moon" has been so successful is that it is perfect the way it is, a masterpiece in every respect. There is no way to improve on something that is perfect. This version is just that, another version, but definitely not better. I've listened to it once and that's it. I have listened to the original thousands of times and it still fascinates me.
If you dip into his "why did I do this" video he clearly states that it was never intented to improve on the original. Its all about using the themes of the original to update the message for the current era.
@@tonycook1624 Thanks for the tip and your comment. I don't want to argue and I will definitely check out his explanation. Part of the point I tried to make is that DSOTM is timeless and is as relevant today as it was back in 1973 owing to a large part to Roger Waters' visionary lyrics and musical experimentation, with the help of the other band members, of course.
He's about to turn 80 years old. He shits himself and wears diapers, but his grandchildren need more millions of dollars, for once he's no longer around. The Roger Waters estate and BMG music want every penny out of this mf they can get.
I'm a firm believer that Roger can do what he like with his music. That being said, this made me sleepy. I found it hard to get through. Maybe in the context of the whole album I'll feel differently.
I agree, I didn't even get past the first two bars. The music was sort of kind of cool for about ten seconds, but its very much 'whats the point of this'. He should have done the full version on the blues acoustic like he does in the documentary. Or maybe do it as a reggae or disco to step it up, but this was just kind of weird. It sounds like what somebody who can't sing but just got garageband would put together. But I agree, he can do what he wants, but its certainly obvious why the FIRST version became a hit, and this just sounds like a creepy guy behind a curtain in a horror movie is whispering to you.
I have a feeling this whole project is going to be garbage, based on what he did to Money. He wrote the lyrics, so he can whatever he wants to it, but this just comes off pretentious AF, as Roger has a tendency to come off. I'm a Gilmour guy, but I typically love Waters' solo work. This, I do not like, at all.
We are all fooling ourselves if we think this re-imagined classic album will be great. I appreciate his vision and experimental nature for this project but all in all the song drags and he sounds like a has been crooner.
@@joshhubble4573 Do you think he wrote the lyrics and Gilmour wrote the music? He wrote the whole damn song, 7/8 riff and all. If Roger comes off pretentious, you come off full of shit.
IMO after Dark Side of the Moon Roger's bitterness slowly started to take over Pink Floyd. This just revisits Dark Side with the bitterness fully developed.
DSOTM is an eternal classic - one of the greatest albums of all time. This adds nothing to it's legacy. I'm not really sure what the point of it is. Don't get me wrong, I love Roger and have been a fan for 50 years, but some things should be just left to bask in it's original brilliance.
Much prefer a reimagining of DSOTM like this, than yet another cynical recycling repackaging remastering of the original where people spend the next few years debating whether they can hear any difference.
@user-js9xm7oc9n what a strange thing to say. The originals legacy is untouched. This is just... more music. Plus it's good. It's not lazy or unimaginative. If you prefer the original, understood, fine, but slap in the face? Calm down.
If you watch the documentary of DSOTM Roger envisioned this song in a bluesy way. He even plays the start and it sounds similar to this. Dave was the one that put the edge on it and turned it into an all time rock hit. Roger was a great songwriter and did some great stuff, but David, Nick and Ricks fingerprints are all over their gret songs.
This is completely correct, but Roger seems to think that because he wrote most of hte songs he was the sole reason PInk Floyd were great. A real shame he couldn't understand their greatness was all of them combined.
That's like saying the orchestra brought Mozart's songs to life. Of course band members add instruments to songs. And Pink Floyd was great so they added great stuff. Yes, Roger is not a lead guitarist or a piano player. Strange that no one seems to try to take credit away from David Bowie for having great musicians on his songs and he only credited himself 100% on his songs. No credit for anyone else. Why are people like you always such an annoying pain in the ass?
Well this says a lot about why Floyd was able to move on without Roger. I'll take the post-Waters albums over this car wreck any day. But, you know, I like actual music with my music.
He clearly wants people to grasp the heavy and dark themes of the lyrics that were obscured by the clouds (vocals & jams). This is exactly like a audio book where you need to actually listen to the words to get it, and that's the best part about it. He makes sure there is never a moment where you are distracted by instruments and miss the lyrics. There was maybe a single 5 second span in the album where he couldnt really remove that part without changing the song too much, but the rest is focused on enunciating the lyrics clearly and loudly. I think he thought that this would get people to hear the words without taking psychedelics, but really most of the people who take the time to pay full attention would have done so on the original without drugs too.
Roger Waters is seriously mentally ill. He doesn't understand that Pink Floyd is a music band. His lyrics testify to a severe personality disorder. His narcissism was a torment for the band. He should better write books about his sick mental state and stop abusing good music with his slogans.
I don't really know if I agree or disagree with you. I am just a young man and I haven't seen much in my life, but I learn from Roger's music. I know that many teenage people don't even try to understand it, but there are also many old people who make laugh on me when I proudly say that I am a fan of Roger Waters. But I know what is right and what is wrong. And I listen to this I'm trying to learn from this kind of music. I think that's the most important thing

You have to know when to leave the scene. Not to spoil the excellence and cl;asic that has been achieved. The bland roger waters does things strenuously, attentive, unfulfilled in that not all eyes were on him. Weak grandfather. It is, paradoxically, only money that he is after. It's weak as fuck.

I saw the wall 3 times and us and them once and they were excellent. I went to see this is not a drill and was very disappointed, especially with the new version of comfortably numb. I’ll definitely pass on this DSOTM tour. The old man has lost it
@lananiella he peaked there because he hasn't had any creativity in the last 30 years so he just kept reliving and remimaging the old days. I will admit that stadium tour was great but all he did was take what they did with floyd and update it
I absolutely adore Pink Floyd, and have seen Roger live on multiple occasions. This just ain't it chief. Unimaginative, dreary, unnecessary, narcassistic are the words that come to mind here.
I have given it a chance - to me, the message was well received in the original recording whilst becoming a monster rock anthem that makes you play guitar, keys, bass and drums. I will always respect Roger for he is a force of nature when it comes to ideas and words, but musically TO ME this version falls very short. The words I get it big time - it’s the world we live in.

Yep, Waters little rewrites seem to be more about him declaring he's responsible for everything Floyd but Time opens with a blatant rip off of the end of Syds Bike using Syds "scribbly black" line in it and the sax plus female singer additions were suggestions Syd made which Waters declared were reasons to remove Syd with Roger calling such suggestions "crazy" making him a pretty shady guy at times.
As a music critic said in the mid-1980's "His voice is so burned out after years of screaming that you can almost smell the ashes".

Ha. Imagine Roger himself thinking this is great
You summarized the entire 2010s and current 2020s: everything's on the nose, no nuance.

@@NowhereMan7 I mean, you *just* heard what Money would have sounded like if Waters was the sole creative force
@@NowhereMan7 he didn't say that. That interpretation is not intelligent. He's rather saying that an older, "wiser" Roger Waters came up with something that falls very short of what the band came up with. He obviously wouldn't come up with this version in version in 1973 but clearly there's something missing in him alone.
@@renato360a You'd hope that is what he means but there are so many comments on here suggesting that this is what the original Money would have sounded like if it werent for the others. @@NowhereMan7 I'm a mathematician, so the word "proof" has a strong and precise meaning to me. However, outside of technical discussion, I wouldn't hold people accountable for playing loose with words. Proof, evidence, indication.. I think the first guy's message was pretty clear. @hernanbusso1609 honestly I think its way more about how the vocals are delivered. the original is so casual yet sarcastic in its delivery, this version just sounds like it's trying way too hard

The Roger Waters estate and BMG music want every penny out of this mf they can get.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

DSOTM is an eternal classic - one of the greatest albums of all time. This adds nothing to it's legacy. I'm not really sure what the point of it is.
Don't get me wrong, I love Roger and have been a fan for 50 years, but some things should be just left to bask in it's original brilliance.
The original album is still there, you can listen to it all you want
Wish You Were Here is an even better album. Just don't go there Roger!
Much prefer a reimagining of DSOTM like this, than yet another cynical recycling repackaging remastering of the original where people spend the next few years debating whether they can hear any difference.
I disagree. I think it actually adds a huge slap in the face to the album's legacy.
Yeah I think that is why there is a slower time signature at the beginning
That's because they were a band
This is completely correct, but Roger seems to think that because he wrote most of hte songs he was the sole reason PInk Floyd were great. A real shame he couldn't understand their greatness was all of them combined.
@@neilemms5831 Ian Anderson seems to have a similar blind spot when it comes to Jethro Tull.
That's like saying the orchestra brought Mozart's songs to life. Of course band members add instruments to songs. And Pink Floyd was great so they added great stuff. Roger now makes audio books?

To understand THIS, one must be not just a music lover, but a wise gray-haired old man.

It just proves creativity has a shelf life. Macca, jagger, page n plant all living off past classics.... This is why.

This sounds like Leonard Cohen plays Pink Floyd. Cool version!
Tom Waits could have made this work.
@@EsteemedRepresentative Yeah I was reminded of Tom Waits too. Didn't think of Leonard Cohen but I hear it now.
Agree with the comparison but I don’t care for it. It only highlights the narcissistic nature of Roger.

Well to be fair he can't sing, he has no choice.
This is what happens when you rest on your laurels, and when your ego convinces you that the world is entitled to the smell of your farts.
you just don't understand it. But that's ok.

@roger waters : Roger, my grandfather was a big pink floyd fan, I'm sure he would really enjoy this new concept. I follow in my grandfather's footsteps, long live pink floyd, long live roger waters
✌️✌️✌️❤️❤️❤️👌👌👌💥💥💥
Actually I like this as a variation on the original, I think the new lyrics are an advance proving he is a great lyricist, he seems to be tending more and more to spoken word poetry but it also shows he wasn't Pink Floyd who was music too
Why is everything I've grown up loving being destroyed . 😭
This version is so much better than the original..said no one ever
I am convinced that Satan plays this song in the elevators of hell.
