Fun fact: When my friend asked me if I know Jackie Chan, I actually said "no".
Because his Chinese name sounds nothing like his English name, and I didn't realize who my friend was referring to.

Hey! I gotta say, I really appreciate the work you put into these video essays. I especially enjoy this one, since Jackie is one of my childhood heroes. Were from very different backgrounds, but I was able to relate to and root for his underdog characters/fights. I'm a Haitian American and know a bit about being an underdog. The essay brought up amazing points and great memories for myself. Will look for one of his films to watch and look for to showing some to my daughter. He is a great man and I want to thank you very much for honoring him in this way. Much blessings and success to you my friend!

I used to not know Jackie Chan's Chinese name for a long time, mainly because his English name was just so well known around the world that no one really spoke his Chinese name unless you were in somewhere in China, even then if you asked someone in English they would most likely know.

TLDR: it's not worth the time or money needed to make up an award for stunt people.
My point is these awards are a means for the people hosting them to profit off of too. And no-names somersaulting guys will not pull in views. so there is no point in making one. Not to mention that the stunts getting obsolete with CGI. There's probably not even enough good stunts a year to make up a meaningful awards ceremony. Not only that, the cost of hiring reputable names in the stunt world is probably high, if you want to hire people like Jackie Chan or Tom Cruise to boost recognition of the awards.

The core element of Jet's fight scene is his large sets of fighting styles. There are interviews in China where martial artists who taught Jet Li how to fight certain martial art styles get amazed by how fast he learns them. He will do an insane stunt and look as astounded that he made it as the audience does. You know he's incredibly skilled, but he still barely scrapes by when it comes to his fights.
Another thing he will do is always start at the bottom. He'll have some kind of disadvantage to overcome. He'll be on the ground or fighting multiple guys.
He's always the underdog, even if he's so well trained and so skilled at fighting. It never feels like he's breezing through fights scenes. It feels like he's trying to just stay alive.

Another great video. Love Jackie Chan, especially all his earlier works with Sammo and Yuan. Really wish I can witness all three coming together again. I find it funny people try to dismiss him these days, when he has bought more joy and laugher to this world than he has pain and suffering.
Also great notice on the hair, I have seen his movies lots of times, but never once thought the hair makes a difference in the impact of the hits.
Also UA-cam fail, your channel didn't show up as having a new video.

I'm just a layperson, but you've made watching movies so much more enjoyable for me. I've gone back and watched so many movies to enjoy the new perspective. You've also introduced me to dozens of Chinese movies I would not have otherwise known about. I am constantly sharing your videos with my friends. Thank you so much!
P.S. I would absolutely love if you did a video essay on Tampopo.

Jackie Chan had a lifebar in his movies. It would say "Danger" and flash sometimes, but in the end, Jackie would give a thumbs up win pose.
Jackie had danger, burned into his lifebar. He gave years of his life, to sustain our own. Bless the universe, for granting him good health. I am very grateful he did not suffer a crippling injury, or lost his sight or mobility. I know, he must endure great pain, and I hope our love for him, somehow helps soothe that pain in his years. The world should never forget Jackie Chan. Ever. Thank you for this.

I feel like I have to say this may be one of your most underrated videos. While the discussion on how Jackie Chan sells a hit isn't new, the part about how a fight scene needs to be a vector for the story is critical. I feel like it's something that is so often missed these days when fight scenes are written by the B team or only occur in the script as [They Fight].

    Chen / Cheng " 成 " = Become
    Long / Lung " 龙 / 龍
    " = Dragon
From his parents perspective when naming the newborn, they want him "To Become Dragon" / 要成龍
    .
When he started his stuntman career, then got his face featured in the film, he "Is Becoming Dragon" / 在成龍
    .
To me, he "Has Already Become Dragon" / 已成龍
    .
To the world later, he "Definitely Becomes Dragon" / 确成龍
    .
His parents gave him a timeless name, and it fits him so well!
Edit: Arknights had a character name reference to him... named C'hen, race Lung... hmm... I wonder if that's intentional?

His parents didn’t give him that name. 成龙 is his stage name. His real name is 房仕龙。his father changed his family name to 陈, after moving to Taiwan then Hong Kong, Jackie was born in Hong Kong so he was named 陈港生. But he and his son both recognised their ancestral name 房。

Another amazing essay one anyone who write ANY TYPE of character in ANY MEDIA need to learn. No matter who you are writing, make them emote and vulnerable specially your protagonist, you know who many games, films, comics, animes and cartoons messed this up, it's really often and I think this is a helpful video to analyze what makes a hero still badass but vulnerable and more important RELATABLE, Jackie Chan is the ultimate likable hero in any film he is in just because of everything you expertly pointed out here.

Most of the points you made in this video have been done before by others (though you did a very good job of it, no slight intended), but I've never seen anyone else call out how integral his hair is in selling hits.
    Really, really good catch there!

That a fight needs to drive the story forward is actually a great lesson in general, not just for film-makers, but for writers as well. If a battle scene has no purpose, like driving the plot forward, showing an impact on the fighters or character growth, it's most likely unnecessary and not well written. Thank you for making me realize this through this wonderful video of yours :)

the way Jackie Chan sells getting hit with his whole body bending reminds me of hit stun and key frames in fighting games. Even if it's only brief, a split second, because the pose is so clear you really see the impact.
